It Died on the Table! Restoring a GE Model TH-20 Drill

I got this drill from the barn sale tool box haul a few weeks ago. GE called it a "Portable Power Tool" because it was made to have interchangeable tool heads like a sander/polisher or even a sabre saw but for the most part, it's a 1/4" chuck electric drill. Mystery Ratchet Cleanup - Who Made This?
I don’t understand Scottish
Ugh
I wanna see this stuff over a new pair of handles
Gotta admit, I was surprised the power drill still works.
Yes. It didn't sound all that healthy but it probably just needs to be cleaned and greased up.
En usa la gente compite x tener las mejores tools y marcas pero no la usan puro egoo y vanidad
No estoy de acuerdo. Dono herramientas a muchas personas aquí que las usan.
It definitely should not be that tight. I'm not sure if that name plate still isn't seated all the way, or the inside and spacer needs to be clean out a little better with a dremel or the like? The anvil should very easily turn by hand. A little less grease may also help, you just need a light coating. Use a magnet to remove the cover plate if you do revisit the build. I think you used it as is, you'd more than likely find yourself tightening and loosening with every arc of the ratchet till the end of time lol. Good for hourly pay but thats about it. Nice choice with the brass hammer though, its never good to strike two hardened steel ones together as they might shatter🤕 Super cool old ratchet to bring back to life!
Thanks for the info! I actually used it for a bit a few days ago and it loosened up well. It's still a bit tighter than average but I can at least turn it with my fingers now. That being said, I think you're right and that ring might still need to be pushed a bit further in.
@@floridarusticrepairsRight on man! Let us know how that turns out👍
@@cblack1863 It's fine now. I gave it a few minutes use and it loosened up. now you can easily spin it with your fingers.
That Craftsman tool box was an amazing haul!
Thanks! Yes, I got some real value in that one.
Trade it in
Yes, but that would have made a boring video. :)
Nice job on the rebuild! I like your brass hammer! Thanks for the video
Thanks! Yes, that brass mallet is very cool! I kept it from one of my tool box hauls.
What’s the date code on that ratchet?
Other than the Snap ON SL-710 can't find any other text on it so my guess would be late 1960's. From what I just saw in a photo on line some of these have text written on the cover plate but mine is blank so your guess is as good as mine.
On my 710 I inherited from my father it’s a letter between the on and the off marking! Thanks for responding.
@@TWOTONEFARM Thanks. Weird. This one had nothing there either.
You should never hit 2 hammers together, as they are both hardened steel ... pieces of steel can & will break & shoot out at you & will cause serious harm.... I know, I did that as a young carpenter & had to go to the hospital to get steel fragments removed from my arm❗
Interesting. Thanks for the heads up on that! I don't think I hit them all that hard but it's a good thing to keep in mind for sure. Maybe I should have had some wood in between them?
The force he used in this video isn't an issue.
@@shannonelliott6116 I wouldn't have thought so either. Thanks.
How to assemble and hang a ceiling fan would be a better title.
Valid point but I think the fact that I wire it for a plug would throw people off if I weren't specific about that.
Maybe, but most of the time was assembling a ceiling fan. Should not have spent so much time on the build and gone straight to your topic.
One new tool back in action now.
Thanks! I have to admit, it has a very high quality feel to it now.
What's great is you can still get the rebuild kits. I bought rebuild kits many years ago for two Craftsman 1/2 ratchets from the 70s. It's getting harder to find those same kits today.
Yes! It's unfortunate how people want a fortune for a Craftsman rebuild kit now. I've got a 3/8th drive that's down but it's not worth it to rebuild.
Speaking of bringing classic tools back to life, how is your Porter-Cable 146B circular saw doing?
Funny you say that!. Now that I'm setting up the workshop I'll be putting some of these tools on display. I unwrapped the porter Cable yesterday and was going to use it but I instead used the heavy 1950's Milwaukee.
@@floridarusticrepairs My 146A* has had regular duty this summer on some wood siding projects around the neighbourhood and never missed a beat. I have several other 146As taking the summer off. 😁
Come out great..... I have a Craftsman real old quarter inch set... I think it was one of the first sets made, I'm not really sure. The ratchet needs to be rebuilt.
There's something fascinating about old ratchets. The older the more interesting. Hopefully you'll be able to find a rebuild kit but if not, I've had luck just taking them apart and cleaning them. Unless it's truly broken inside you can usually get them working again.
WAO ! not cheap 😮 I better start playing the mega MILLION ! 😊😮
Yes, it took me several years of saving to be able to afford it.
1:48 sorry for your loss looked like a great cat
lol! I had to look to see what you meant. Hilarious.
Great to see - totally different to the UK but a lot of good lessons from your build. Would love to see more about it - health to enjoy it
Thanks and a big "Hello" from the colonies. I'll upload some video of the inside work soon.
@@floridarusticrepairs Looking forward to it!
Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
I’m sorry this project took so long for you. I acted as my own GC and my metal building with concrete was done in under 2 months. The permitting was easily the most annoying part but thankfully I had great crews that did the installs.
That's great! My building supplier would not even begin their six week lead time countdown until a week after the concrete was in.
Nice score on the tools you bought. I have a 1/2” electric drill looks very similar to yours. Mine is a Skill brand it’s very powerful. Mine will break fingers if you’re not careful. I always use the loop handle that came with it, so I always use it both hands on while operating.
Thanks! Yes, good advice! Especially when using a hole saw or something like that, these drills can fracture your wrist easily. I don't recall if I found that handle in the box or not but I do have a spare.
sorry you dealt with such delays and a contractor who was not truthful, your building looks great inside and out
Thank you! It was worth it in the long run.
I CAD drafted house plans as a business each sheet of the drawing takes two to three days for up to 2200 sqft changes take take an equal amount of time as the set of plans but it looks great communicates is job one for a great project. Looking forward to some great videos.
Thanks! It's funny that you mention communication. After the third time I was told that it would be six more weeks by the contractor I told him that he is very weak at managing expectations. Had he simply said that it'll take 5 months I would have been fine with it. With every delay I only discovered things were stalled after I called for a status having not heard anything for a while.
Always include liquidated damages in the contract. Every day past schedule is $100-$200 penalty.
Good point! I tried for a clause with monetization but the best they'd give me was a timeline which they failed miserably with. It's on me if I want to pursue it further but I think I won't bother.
Great tip to use a less aggressive drill to screw the bolts in.
Thanks! My friend Tyron does this sort of thing for a living but he admitted that was a better option.
I was using the same screws and drillbit to retrofit a post anchor. I was having the same issue with these screws breaking! Good to see I wasn’t doing something wrong.
Thanks for the info! I was thinking we were screwing it up as well. :)
I’m replacing this same power cord for a friend but felt I should update it with a grounded cord since the mixer is all metal. This mixer would not be sold today without that ground. Trouble is, now the mixer trips a GFCI outlet so this may not be an option.
Thanks! That's interesting info. I often debate whether I should be adding a grounded cord when I do these sort of restorations but I think these mixers have a relatively isolated body so risk of shock is low. I wonder if by adding the ground you're sending a bit of leakage into the GFI?
I’m sure you got plenty of videos lined up but a cool video if it’s interesting would be a tour of your collection of tool boxes/collection of tools? Awesome video as usual been fan for a while
Thanks! I will be doing a shop tour once I get everything set up and sorted out. When I got all of the toolboxes in one room even I was surprised by how many there were. :) Time to get some of them donated out.
Put some graphite greases on the slides
Thanks! I'll give it a shot.
One of the few times you hear somebody tell you about almost losing their s*** and probably had somebody tell them down someday you'll laugh about this. Now you're actually laughing about it. Good to see you didn't completely lose it. Thanks for laying it all out, in details, prices and time. Everybody has things they wish they'd done different but I think you nailed it and definitely won't regret anything you did. Thanks again
Thanks! Even before I started the process with this builder I had prepared myself for some difficulties and delays. I got more than I had imagined but by keeping the end goal in sight I was able to keep "mostly" calm in dealing with everyone.
Great information! And a cool 😺
Thanks! Mugsy is always around when I'm working on things outside.
I had a totally different experience. I used Eagle, and although my unit is half this size. I did my own permits ground work and concrete using tails, 3800.Building was 6900, no insulation or panel all in just under 11k and put in ground exactly 9 weeks from order.
Thanks for the info. That's interesting. Even at it's best I can't see that happening with mine. Maybe if I had the permits before I signed the contract (3 weeks saved) and had the concrete lined up before the contract with the builder (4 weeks saved) it may have been possible. My town made it difficult for me to permit this myself and after my first failed attempt coordinating that with a builder I handed it off.
This is very interesting. I'm thinking of putting a similar (smaller) structure on my property. Nice to know what to expect.
As long as you estimate a lot of extra time you'll keep your stress level down.
I’m directly across the state from you.. I started using these dunks 6-8mo ago, they definitely work. I’m on 2 half wooded acres as well. I started with buckets around my house, now I’ve got them all over. I drilled little holes on the top to ziptie plastic fencing over the top of the buckets to keep animals out. Works great! I too get nailed when I go on walks in the neighborhood, but much better at my house now.
Thanks for the info! I like that ziptie idea. I may have to steal it. :)
Very helpful, thank you! Finished building looks great
Thanks! I went a little crazy with the paneling inside, but it was worth it.
I think it looks great 2👍👍up Have a Jesus filled day everyone Greg in Michigan
Thanks!
Nice to hear from you brother 👍
Thanks!
The foam was probably still out gassing when the initial painting was done. I'm a retired industrial coatings contractor.
Thanks for the info! That makes a lot of sense. It was summer in Florida and very humid so maybe it took longer to fully set.
Thank you for your upload.
Glad you found it helpful! I just had the exact window go on my 2004 Avalanche. Same process but cleaner video because I wasn't in a rush. :)
Thanks for doing the video. I am actually in the beginning process of a 24x40 building. I am using it for a garage to work on cars so I will not be going with paneling, lol. My big cost is going to be the leveling the land, it is on a hill, and concrete pad. The only good thing for me is that I don't have a tight deadline. Your building looks really nice!!
Thanks! i was fortunate to have my lot already level. Concrete has gotten very expensive over the last ten years.
Looks great i have one about that size came with my house . mine is wooden abd 2 floors i am in the updating of it right now prices are crazy for remodeling it lol
Thanks! I had looked into building a wood structure but it would have cost me about 25% more and I was already stretched. Having a second floor would be great.
My building will be $270,000
Wow! Much bigger than mine, I'm sure. 😀
You needed a work shop. I know it was costly but how much you paid for storage over the years.
Thanks! yes, I'm grateful to have it. Changed the water pump in my truck last night in well lit air conditioned comfort.
I was wondering where you were putting all those tools and boxes! Now I know. There they are!
There's a lot of them! My main box which I've had for 40 years is still in my garage. Soon to be coming over.
I built a metal building. For a warehouse behind my store. And a lot of what you’re saying was true.i had more problems with zoning than anything. Had to have a buffer zone between my building and the homes. All that had to be approved. And then landscaping. Mine was about 3 times your size. No AC but did insulation. It took me about 6 months. Start to finish. Yes got to be patient. Thanks for sharing your experience. 💯👊👍
Thanks for the info! Fortunately, I had zoning cleared up by the time I got to contract. Did you go with closed cell foam insulation? I'm curious as to your opinions on that.
@@floridarusticrepairs I had a roof top vent to allow heat to rise and go out. The insulation was kinda old school. Had insulation towards the metal. And heavy plastic on inside. Worked well. For my warehouse. Spray insulation was not offered. I do like the way yours was done.
@@terryeustice5399 The extra window I wanted was actually so I could put a solar fan up there to vent. it didn't work out but the foam really does an excellent job.
WHAT THE!?!?!?! No more taking stuff apart in the gazebo? DUDEZILLA!!!!!!!
lol! Maybe sometimes when the weather is nice. :)
Nice building, is the cost of the building include the assembly on site? Thanks for sharing your info
The cost of assembly is included. The only thing I caught when quoting builders is that some would say that you needed to provide a crane on site. Anytime i argued that point they immediately backed off and included it. Since my building height is only 15' at peak, a crane wasn't necessary anyway which makes me wonder why they tried to add that cost.
Great building but you have to have the supervisors, I know you will figure it out. Building process, sucks. Period. The end result is very nice. You and the supervisors will enjoy it.
It's funny, I was changing the water pump in my truck last night and when I went outside there were three sitting there waiting for me to come out. If I leave the garage door open they'll venture in but as of now they're wary of it.
@@floridarusticrepairs you will work out. They improvise, adapt and overcome.
Thanks for the video and the honesty!
Thanks for the reply. I hope you found it useful info.
