How to Grow a Pineapple Indoors

This video shows you how to grow a new pineapple by using a fresh pineapple crown. Here are the steps: (supplies needed listed at bottom)
    Step One: Prepare the Crown
-Buy a fresh healthy pineapple (preferably organic).
-Cut the crown off and remove any remaining pineapple flesh.
-Strip off some of the lower leaves, exposing up to about an inch of the base of the crown.
-After trimming and stripping, let the crown dry out for about 4 days before going to the next step. (you want to be sure that any remaining bits of pineapple flesh have dried & died..don't worry if a few leaves start to brown)
    Step Two: Root the Crown
-Place the crown in a clear glass of water and change out the water every few days.
(I use water that has drained from my other plants since it's fertilized. I don't change it, I just top it off as it evaporates)
-Place in a sunny spot & wait until roots appear, allow them to grow to at least an inch or more.
    Step Three: Plants the Crown
-Cover the drainage hole of terra cotta pot with the pottery shard.
    -Add a layer fine gravel.
-Add soil mix (2 parts potting soil, 1 part Peat Moss, 1 part Perlite)
-Dig a shallow hole the size of your pineapple crown.
-Place crown in hole and cover with soil mix.
Optional: top with a layer of Top Soil.
    Step Four: Moisture Tray
-Fill plastic drain tray halfway with fine gravel.
-Water pineapple until water level just passes the rocks. I only use distilled water (it's okay to have the very bottom of the pot slightly submerged)
-This step is important as most people don't live in the tropics & will need the added humidity a moisture tray provides. It's the only way your plant will survive in the full sun indoors. It also helps to mist the plant a few times a week (I mist everyday).
Replant once a year and wait patiently, in a couple of years you should have a small sized pineapple fruit on top of your plant.
    Supplies needed:
-8 inch or bigger porous clay pot with drain hole.
-clay shard (I use a piece from an old clay pot I smashed with a hammer)
-Potting Soil, Peat Moss & Perlite (Top Soil is optional)
    -Fine gravel
    -Plastic drain tray

I love how you did it step by step unlike so many people online. And the best part was that yiu dated the rooting process. I just barely started this but my leave tips immediately started turning g brown! I moved it away from the window after a day or two. Should it be by the window?

I planted two pinapple tops two years ago and they grew to be enormous! Didn't get a pineapple but they were ended up being a really big beautiful plant. Given another four to six months it might have given me a pinapple but they just got to big and I wanted to use the space for other plants. So out they went. My sis cried lol.

Of course I've listed every step already, it's all right there for you. What isn't shown in the video (but is listed in the description above), is that I dried the pineapple top for 5 days before I put in water. You have to let the flesh around the crown's base die so you can remove it before placing in water. A few leaves will brown during the drying, but once you plant it, it'll thrive. Good luck.

I've started a few pineapple from the tops, & one even put out a side shoot, & the side shoot is doing better than the tops, & I think it will have a better pineapple when it dose fruit out, but I'm not sure. I'm now playing around with starting them from seed, it's been a lot of fun, it took 1 month for the seeds to start to root out using the glass jar (with drops of water in it & a lid on it) method, so far over 1/2 have sprouted, & now are in the dirt, their still real small but doing well.

I suspect you find it difficult to understand a lot of things. Clay pot shards are useful in keeping soil in, while allowing excess water to drain from the holes in the bottom of the pot. If you have a pot with NO holes (not recommended) it's very important to fill the bottom of the pot with small rocks, perhaps a couple inches deep (more, if a large pot) so that the soil at the bottom doesn't become saturated and cause root rot.

    • @sharoncourt75
      @sharoncourt75 4 года назад

the main plant only grow 1, in ideal sunny conditions it takes 18 months from adult plant to harvest, if less sun or cold region it may take longer; onve the fruit is removed tge main plant will start to die and the babys grown around her will do the same thing all over again, for this they should be move to other pots or you will have a huge plant lol.

All of that is not necessary you took something it's really simple to do and turned it into something very complicated all you got to do is stick it in the dirt just cut the top off you don't have to root it just put it in the dirt that's it it'll grow beautiful plant. Produce beautiful fruit all that other Mickey Mouse business is not necessary at all

You don't need to root a pineapple to grow one. You don't have to clean the leaves from the bottom to expose the "root". I cut the top off with about a half inch of fruit top attached and stick it into miracle grow soil and off they go. I now have 9 pineapples. I started with one.
