Actually we here in India (Hindus), in some part of the country keep a non-dehusked, normal coconut on a small pot filled with water(which is frequently changed) in front of the god place. We pray in font of it. Sometime it germinates and after a couple of months it grows into 2-3 feet plant on the water pot. It probably signifies prosperity. Later it is planted in kitchen garden in our back yard or at some apt place. We at my home never really had a such an event. I always wished I had one such growth at my place. So today when I saw you do the video it reminds me of myself when I had also tried like you to have it assisted germination. But it never worked. But for now with your inputs I am going to try your ways. Thanks a lot!

I agree with JonaVicis! I know I started a navel orange tree over 10 years ago and used a soil mix with more sand in the mix and my tree has been doing good all these years! Years before this I just grew it in potting mix and after awhile the leaves would turn brown and drop off due to too much moisture. The roots need to breath! :-)

I have one sprouted coconut out of three using this process... :) I had left the coconuts soaking for 6 days accidentally, but it worked out just the same, and then 2 days after placing them in the ziplock one of the coconut seeds sprouted... now I will place it in the sun and let nature take its course. I used to live in the Virgin Islands and would go to a remote beach that had a coconut orchard (it was dark back in there and along a natural mountain rain run off) to collect small coconut trees after they'd sprouted. I never tried to grow from a coconut myself, but now that I'm back in the states, I plan to try it your way! Thanks for sharing!

My coconut has sprouted it's fist root. I'm really excited, however I used a slightly different method. I soaked it for 3 days like you did, and put it in a bag for a few weeks, but then I decided to plant it strait in the soil to see what would happen. As of today (1st of September) my coconut has pushed a root through one of the 'eyes'. I hope this helps.

if you want a curvy tree like in the tropics you can also place the dots down in the water when you plant it, then the seedling curves, making it grow that way! =)

Good video. I tried the bag method, and all I got was a decayed nut. Planting outside in a plastic pot with dark potting soil in the summer had better results. No prior soaking either, and this time it sprouted. I think the heat helps. I don't think this would have worked inside at room temperature. Pretty neat though. Who knew this was even possible?

I live in Brazil and coconut palms grow here in sandy soil mainly, but you find them also on other soil, most of the time its kind of a poor and soft soil. guees they don't get much niutrients out of the soil here having big leaves for lots of photosynthesis. The many strong roots they develop all around the base of the stem are mor likely for good fixation as they are exposed to strong winds especialy at the beaches. good luck on you palm! plant it at the sunniest spot you have. cheers mate

Its like magic! I have other palm seeds sprouting now and its so exciting when they do, well done. You can wrap the coconut in spagnum moss that you wet then squeese dry till just damp, placed in the bag around the cocnut this will keep the roots warm and moist as they appear which is what the old (rotting husk) husk would do. You could also use coconut fibre (LOL) bought from the garden shop. Your way is excelent, though. Unhusked coconuts are huge and difficut to handle, they take much longer to sprout too. I reckon sandy soil is best at least that's what they like in the "wild" growing in almost pure beach sand as they do. I wonder myself if this is why the seed is so big so the seedling has plenty of food in that poor sand. Maybe when the roots reach right down bellow the beach there is proper earth who knows? Hope you can find a nice warm enough micro climate to plant it. If its too cold and it doesn't make it don't worry try a few Nikau palm seeds. New Zealands Nikau palms are spectacular and can take slightly cooler weather. I can't grow them its too hot and humid here ):

I've tried your method, as you told with the 3 dots facing up in the plastic bag. Now the coconut has a white thing coming up out of one of the dot, it seems to work well. I had never success before with a coconut.
I don't know if you remember me, but my coconut finally sprouted haha, I even forgot about it until you commented on a video and it reminded me of it. But it only has a little numb coming out of it. I just replaced the water and am letting it sit in a windowsill.

I tried this in Pennsylvania after seeing the vid, I was going to throw it out cuz I thought it didn't work after keeping it in the bag several months at 90 degrees, well I completely FORGOT and checked the seed yesterday and a YEAR and a HALF LATER it's sprouted!!! Pretty well along too, potted it up today and I hope it makes it! So....moral is don't give up unless the seeds totally rotted out. Because you might get a palm :D
I found coconuts at Coco beach after the hurricane and I want to ship them back home to TX and hope for the best. The guy I met in Florida told me I can put the Huskies coconut in amy soil as long as I plant in in football style

I wonder if sand with a layer of compost on top would work. Do coconuts sprout when they fall off the tree or do they only sprout when they fall into water and wash up on a shore of some type whether it's the ocean or a freshwater lake?

Coconuts temperatures limitation are that they cannot survive with soil temps below 60f or 15.5c for very long or they get root rot. They prefer at least 21c. Surprising that there is only 1 single old coconut tree growing in Newport beach, ca. There is also a few in the Kermadec islands of New Zealand, but its to cool in winter to reproduce.

I haven't tried this before with a palm, but I read somewhere that if you soak or wash seeds in water with a little bit of hydrogen peroxide that they will not get moldy, and that works, and when a bonsai of a friend of mine got moldy I recommended to wash it in a little hydrogen peroxide diluted in water and that worked, got rid of all the mold. So I would try that to keep your bag clean.

I have left the coconut submerged in water for three days, I'll wait one more day to put it in the ziploc bag. Does is matter if the water of the bucket turns brownish? It doesn't smell bad but I'm worried. I live in Mexico, the weather in my hometown is very dry and hot
If I had a larger tropical freshwater tank I wonder if I could actually germinate the coconuts with the fish and plants and invertebrates still in there. How has that worked out for you by the way? Do you think the aerated water makes a difference?

I remember once seeing on telly discovery I think how a coconut gets transplanted by river travel in the tropics and a lot of the tropical lands are beach sand :) or so it looks to me I've never been away from home. Hope to see more videos and updates when you got time :D

Brilliant idea. Thank you. I have one in the plastic bag already. About 10 years ago I was lucky enough to find the coconut sprouted (it was orange sprout) in the storage bin. The plant has been in a pot indoors since then, but the leaves haven't separated yet. I get about 3 leaves per year...very slow growth, but the dried leaves are good for my orchids.

My last attempt also, going to sink it in soil this time and bought one with husk on it; thinking the soil will keep the mold off it, going to use a heating pad too under the bucket to kick start the humidity and heat required, as I live in Oregon and it’s New Years; Happy 2020, fellow friends of those with leaves ♥️
Oh by the way the mold helps the coconut grow more prosperously when its fully grown. So it really good that it has mold, cause when its fully grown it will bare even more fruit

You should try to go to an asian market. The bigger ones usually have coconuts with lots of water for snacking. A lot of them even include the husk in order to try to preserve the water inside.

Hello from UK, this worked for me, mine took a month to germinate, great video =)

I got my coconut off the beach soaked it and put it a sealed bag similar to what you done and it sprouted 😊

I have left the coconut submerged in water for three days, I'll wait one more day to put it in the ziploc bag. Does is matter if the water of the bucket turns brownish? It doesn't smell bad but I'm worried. I live in Mexico, the weather in my hometown is very dry and hot
If I had a larger tropical freshwater tank I wonder if I could actually germinate the coconuts with the fish and plants and invertebrates still in there. How has that worked out for you by the way? Do you think the aerated water makes a difference?

Hey great video I aways wanted to try and grow one I live in Kentucky so it's nice to see tropical plants gonna try it today I know I have seen soil at lowes called cactus palm and citrus soil I know that will work win a well draining pot not good to let anything set in wet soil but to water once a week plant the coconut about half way out of the soil like it would haven fallen off a tree s

I remember once seeing on telly discovery I think how a coconut gets transplanted by river travel in the tropics and a lot of the tropical lands are beach sand :) or so it looks to me I've never been away from home. Hope to see more videos and updates when you got time :D

Got to try this one, THANK YOU. Its going to be a cat-n-mouse to find a coconut, its hard to buy a full coconut with water inside here in the US, usually coconuts available here are processed and packaged in plastics already :-(

you can try to look up on the internet in wich soil the most coconut tree grow in i'm sure you will find alot about soil based on coconut tree's

Brilliant idea. Thank you. I have one in the plastic bag already. About 10 years ago I was lucky enough to find the coconut sprouted (it was orange sprout) in the storage bin. The plant has been in a pot indoors since then, but the leaves haven't separated yet. I get about 3 leaves per year...very slow growth, but the dried leaves are good for my orchids.
cool. I wish we could grow these tropical fruits. I guess atleast having cherries and grapes and apples are something though

Oh please I love coconuts they are the real medicine to the body, yo grow your own tree is amazing. What I fond disgusting is when people rather buy stiff that's only 40% natural
A 40% stiff can be alarming.
i tried this. after 10 days mine was covered in mold. i am going to try again.
My last attempt also, going to sink it in soil this time and bought one with husk on it; thinking the soil will keep the mold off it, going to use a heating pad too under the bucket to kick start the humidity and heat required, as I live in Oregon and it’s New Years; Happy 2020, fellow friends of those with leaves ♥️

Oh by the way the mold helps the coconut grow more prosperously when its fully grown. So it really good that it has mold, cause when its fully grown it will bare even more fruit
The coconut you bought was probably irradiated. Get a young coconut (white coconut z) if you can. The brown ones are typically so old they are garbage

You should try to go to an asian market. The bigger ones usually have coconuts with lots of water for snacking. A lot of them even include the husk in order to try to preserve the water inside.
