    You should open up a spring loaded umbrella. They have an exceptionally beefy spring but small diameter. Oh and I wanna make a jolt brass nuckle (foam tip)

    Captain Xavier A couple tips that might be worth sharing... You are surely aware of both, but maybe they'll help someone else reading this.
    First tip: a quick brush-up with coarse sandpaper of any smooth foam will always make a glue bond stronger. The smooth side of the grey floor mats in this video (and most sheets of craft foam) are good examples of the type I mean. A quick rub with 60- or 80-grit on each surface to be glued will provide lots of nooks and crannies for the glue to bind in- just remember to brush the dust off before using the glue!
    Second tip: After applying glue to both surfaces, let it sit for a brief time before pressing them together; this also improves the bond. How long you need to wait depends on your glue... Rubber cement is usually in the 3-5 minute range, while super glue is more like 30 seconds. I wouldn't recommend using super glue on the open-cell foam of a pool noodle, though... It's likely to be a VERY brittle bond.
    Random semi-related tip: if you ever need super glue to set and harden faster, sprinkle it with a dusting of baking soda around all the exposed glue... I have no idea *why* it works, but it does. Thanks to ex-Mythbuster Adam Savage for teaching me that one, lol.

    Thoughts on how to better seal the inside wall of the noodle to maybe get better performance out of these?

    The side of the foam with the texture on definitely will need sanding, as contact cement can struggle to adhere to is since it is heat sealed. If you sand away the texture the surface of the foam becomes porous again and will allow the glue to adhere much better as it then has a better surface to grab onto. It may work for a while if you don't remove the texture, but I wouldn't be surprised if the side attached to the pool noodle get's torn loose or blasted off by a Titan at some point

  • @kittenclaws5775
    @kittenclaws5775 6 лет назад

    I make LARP weapons and I'd like to offer a couple of ideas!
    For the end of the pool noodle you're putting contact cement on, you can cover it with aluminium foil before hand (As smoothly and flat as possible, no crinkles on top) and take a hot iron to it. It'll melt the foam a bit and close off some of the cells and give you a better gluing surface!
    If you glue your foam mats smooth to smooth and then use your belt sander on the rough side, contact cement will hold better - though not by much so this might be a pass just because it's not nearly as helpful as heat-sealing the pool noodle.
    For the fins, I'd suggest taking a soldering iron and heat cutting a narrow channel to glue your fins into - that will also work better with contact cement, but honestly both weldwood and hot melt are fine. To keep a consistent angle of attack on your fins, use a triangle of paper or some other paper guide rule. I've done that to make foam-based throwies for LARP.
    I doubt it'll be a problem for your pressures, but if anyone finds they're popping the heads off their missiles, cut two foam disks, just like in the video, but smaller and to fit inside the space in the pool noodle and glue them into place, just under the two circles as done in the video - basically creating a stem to your dart head, as it were.

  • @darklordofsword

    Contact cement is the bomb. Dap weldwood is fine, but if you can find it, Barge Cement is apparently more flexible, so it might help some stuff last longer. Pain it the rear to get hold of it though.

    In school we made model rocket from scratch rapping paper around a dowel to make the rocket body and we made the nose cone on a lathe from wood including the fins I did the same with the fins I put them on at a slight angle mine flew pretty straight others not so well because of the crudeness of manufacturing and I knew it was going to need a slight spin because of the Diy body and the nose cone made on a well worn lathe!

    Good idea, but would you consider designing a 2 part 3d printed template for the fins so that people could cut their own out of foam sheet, in case they dont have access to the finned foam footballs?
    Failing that, would you be willing to put out a high res picture with some kind of measurements or a ruler next to it or something so that people could design their own?

    • @CaptainXavier
      @CaptainXavier  6 лет назад +3
