    This is a fun project that involves quite a few great techniques for working with PVC that can be of use in making many other PVC creations. The end result to this project is kid friendly and should last for many years.
    The piston created in this project is a particularly useful design for many other projects. It's air tight in 2" PVC pipe and requires no special tools or modifications of off the shelve parts. It's pretty rare to see a design that works so well with so little customization.
    Parts:
    16" x 2" PVC Pipe
    12" x 3/4" PVC Pipe
    24" x 1 1/4" PVC Pipe
    2" x 1 1/4" PVC Pipe
    2" Coupling
    2" x 3/4" Reducer
    2" Threaded Female Adapter
    2" x 1 1/2" Threaded Reducer
    1 1/4" End Cap (x2)
    1 1/4" Coupling
    1 5/8" x 2" O Ring
    1" L Bracket
    Self Tapping Screws
    Cooking Oil
    Foam Pool Noodles (Brands with the narrowest core will fly furthest)
    Craft Foam Sheets
    Sand Paper
    Hot Glue
    PVC Primer & Cement

    I recommend planning this project in advance to be sure you can get all the supplies. We had trouble finding some of the pieces. You can't just pick up everything at Lowes or Home Depot, at least not in my neck of the woods. We had to go to a plumbing supply store. 2" O rings were VERY difficult to find. Also, our pool noodle inside hole dimension was too small. We are still trouble shooting to make everything work.

    You should have modified sprinkler valve to block/release the air pressure created by the piston. The valve should be opened once the piston is fully inserted. This allows more pressure to build up so the rocket will launch once maximum pressure is reached. Rather than the rocket being propelled before the piston is full inserted.

Also, if you wrap a Nerf bullet tightly in duct tape so that it fits snugly into the barrel, it is another great lobbing projectile.

    This is a really great gun, but I found a few issues...
    At the hardware stores, some of those adapters are really hard to find, so you may need to be prepared to compromise by using multiple pieces of modifying other pieces to make them fit. Also, I used foam pipe insulator because I couldn't find any pool noodles this time of year and hot glue melted it, so try Gorilla Glue instead. Other than that, which is mostly just the hardware stores' faults, it is a great rocket launcher! Go NightHawkInLight!

    You probably don't want to lubricate with cooking oil -- it'll rot. Use something like silicone grease or Teflon lubricant -- something that won't eat whatever the o-ring is made of.
    Also, I would still glue the barrel on the end even if it's a good friction fit, just to make sure that it's 100% air tight.

    • @Nighthawkinlight
      @Nighthawkinlight  10 лет назад

      I wanted to use cooking oil because it's a kids toy so best to keep the synthetic lubricants that can be toxic or provoke allergies out of the mix. One of the reasons I didn't glue the barrel on is because I'm considering other uses for the body of the launcher that would exchange the barrel for different attachments. Those are good suggestions otherwise.

  • @killerzeba
    @killerzeba 10 лет назад +1

    Hey Nighthawk, love your channel! Question though, comparing this build to your hairspray PVC Rocket Launcher build, which gains the most altitude? I know the hairspray rocket has a bit more mass, but does the fueled launch compensate with a higher launch? I'm trying to decide which to start gathering supplies for. Thanks bud!

    • @Nighthawkinlight
      @Nighthawkinlight  10 лет назад +1

      The hairspray rocket launches higher, but you could get nearly as high with this if you used really tight fitting rockets. This also can fire more rockets way faster. The hairspray launcher takes about 20 seconds between shots to air out the chamber. It would also hurt a lot more to get hit by so I wouldn't recommend launching it at people.

    now make a spud gun rocket launcher from it. Shouldn't be too dangerous because there's nothing obstructing the barrel (i.e. no potato stuck inside) and the rocket is only slid onto the barrel and not stuck/jammed

    • @Nighthawkinlight
      @Nighthawkinlight  10 лет назад +3

      It wouldn't be dangerous at all, except for the flying potato aspect. A little longer barrel would likely fire them pretty hard and fast.

    • @CookingWithCows
      @CookingWithCows 10 лет назад +4

      NightHawkInLight haha no I don't mean with flying potatoes, I mean your foam rocket launcher, just propelled by some kind of aerosol/gas explosion like in a spud gun instead of the manual pressure with the plunger. You can probably still use your plunger as an alternative method, but you can modify yours to add a way to introduce fuel and some electric ignition system without inhibiting the function of the plunger. Maybe let the wires/tubes go through the plunger even.
      The gas goes through a tube into a valve (from a bicycle tyre or something) and the wire from the electric ignition makes a spark that hits this valve and makes the air/gas mix ignite

    • @mikeprimus97
      @mikeprimus97 10 лет назад +1

      ***** I don't know, I kinda like the idea of a flying potato/nerf rocket. And while you could do that, there is the chance of the flames setting the nerf rocket on fire, which is somewhat unlikely. But if it did you could have a flaming nerf rocket flying around, which sounds awesome, but a large fire does not.

    Any tips for finding the o-ring? Haven't been able to find one nearly that big at the local places. Any ideas for an alternate if I can't find one?

      You should be able to find one online if you look up the dimensions provided in the video description, or their metric equivalent.

      NightHawkInLight Found that by searching for o-ring 326 you results for this size. Seems they may be available at some auto parts stores.
