Boba Fett is unique in the Kenner line in that I don't think that most paint wear detracts from his appeal. Most Boba's figures have distressed paint, which goes well with his on-screen look. That being said, excellent work making him look come fresh off the assembly line again.
Nice video! I didn't expect a Star Wars painting repair video, so this was a nice surprise! And now, some artistic backseat driving: To get a better match for Boba's green armor, try mixing some brown with your green to get more of a khaki or woodland green, Dave. It will darken the green, and the yellow in the brown will get you to where you want to go. A little brown added to the green will go a long way, and you might need to add a bit of yellow also. Green + brown + yellow will give you a closer forest green color that you're after. Just mix some of each of the paints a little bit at a time to get the right kind of mix formula.
Pro Tip: To mix khaki, olive, earthy, army shades of green, leave the green paint out entirely and start by gradually mixing just the black straight into the yellow. Try it sometime, it sounds like witchcraft but it honestly works. 👍
Very happy to see you back in full Star Wars mode. Great video, as ever. Hope everything went well for you over the last month. Glad to see you back and in full form.
Vallejo is my go to paint. Love the colors and handling, and plus I like that I can take drops from the bottle in stead of having to dip my brush in a jar.
Those Humbrol Paints are great! I buy them whenever I can for my main wargaming painting miniatures. You got the Vallejo and they have a massive range. Model colour and Game colour are both ranges within it. I highly recommend them.
I ordered a beat figure from ebay! I was going to give this a try . A couple of days later a near perfect boba fett popped up. It was cheap due his left hand being cut across the fingers! I little boil and pop and I have a great boba fett
Great job Dave. Looks great. Have you thought about making the “Mythasaur” skull decal like you did with the Imperial logo on the AT AT drivers for his shoulder?
I seen a guy on RUclips that made an aluminum foil lined box. That had UV led strips inside it. He would use that for an artificial sun. Now the box had a lid with more aluminum foil. So when he put his items in he could close the box up. You might try that as an alternative to having to leave things outside
This is something me and a friend have tried, it tends to colour the plastic slightly differently to natural sunlight, it's a little too intense i think.
This isn't a critique- this is more curiosity- but... when painting a figure- would having the paint mixed on the same color paper as the figure bring a more accurate color?
I have some questions. A lot of figures I buy that have Mandalorian armor usually have very poor point jobs on their visors. I've tried painting them a little bit but I usually screw it up by getting a little bit on the helmet just outside the visor and it comes out uneven. A. how would I be able to remove that paint without removing the original paint the figure came in, and B. how do I help steady my hand? I'm very shaky. Keep up the good work!
Hi there! Love your channel! So glad I got into vintage collecting at the point, where people like you share so much knoledge! Thank you! I come from a miniature painting hobby, I use acrylic modelling paints all the time, but they are 100% matt. In your opinion will mixing clear coat right into the paint mix do the job instead of adding the clear coat ontop?
@@toypolloi I think I forgot to write the point of my comment :))) I mean I thought what if I add the clear coat in the mix to get this somewhat gloss effect on the finished figure. As far as I understood, you have tried mixing glossy and matt paint together, so I wonder if mixing just some glossy acrylic varnish in matt paint will do the job of getting partly glossy overall look
Another great video! I know this is a 'moral' issue. Do I keep my vintage figures as it is or do I try and repaint or repair them. I only have one Boba Fett not in the perfect condition and my plan is to get some more and perhaps repaint one of them.
Do you know if that clear coat stuff would work with the early reaction figures? They don't really have that shine the old figures have and I'd love to give them that vintage look.
I was doing some touch-ups last night! I'm too impatient. I always do them at night - which is the wrong light, and I use gloss when I should use matt.
Gotta wonder how many Anthropomorphic Pimple you created this video. Don't you know Benzoyl Peroxide is a very powerful magic spell the gives Pimples life. 😆 Yes I am a Dave The Barbarian fan and that is hilarious to me. You know you should make a Dave for your MoTU collection out of the parts that can't make a good figure of the main cast and give it new life, would love to see that as a video series. But just a suggestion again my friend. Cheers
Where can I get that paint ? Hobby lobby ? Amazon ?thanks . Got some beat up vintage Star Wars I would like to bring back to the glory days . Would testors work ? Acrylic ?
Hi. Great vid. I’ve got an odd question- I’d like to strip my Boba Fett figure down to just the base grey. What would be the best technique for this? Thanks.
since 1980 i must have owned about 50 boba fetts all together, i have never seen 2 with the exact same paint color. its always a slightly different shade of green. makes me think they used what ever paint they happened to have on hand at the time.
Toy Polloi What were the original Humbrol numbers that were unavailable that you replaced with the Vallejo paints? I'm going to put in an order for Humbrol paints through the mail so I have a proper set for restorations and customizations. I have a Death Star to staff, so I've gotten some rough Imperial Commanders, Death Squad Commanders, and droids to customize into some of the extras seen in the film. Thanks.
There are charts on line that convert between paint types. Use one of those to go from the Vallejo paint numbers I mention in the video back to Humbrol as I don't have a record of what I was hoping to buy. Cheers
@@toypolloi Thanks, I was trying to use some conversion charts, but different ones don't seem to agree with each other, and the Humbrol numbers I'm coming up with are not currently in stock. I'll keep trying since I don't have any Mr Fetts at the moment to touch up, but I'd like to do some screen accurate customs to his appearance in ESB and ROTJ.
That was the problem I had. I couldn't get the humbrols I needed. Looks like they are not restocking many suppliers at the moment. The Vallejo ones seem just as good.
What is your opinion on doing a touch up painting on a vintage B-Wing pilot? I manage to pick him up for ~ 6/7 USD at a local good will store. I he quite beaten in the paint work and has lots of scuff marks in the paint, and have some paint loss. I think there is a ceatain charm to it, but on the other side, I want a pristine and good looking figure. Bought him this sunday, thus 2 different comments. =)
That's true. Just wanted to hear someone's opinions =) Maybe some people thinks is a sin "destroying" this kind of figure. But as you say, its mine, and mine decision. I was just fiching for some opionions, since I'm a little ambivalent regarding this issue. Thanks.
@@toypolloi Thank you for your reply. I realized that one product is called Mecha, therefore I guess it's for vehicles and robots. I'm sorry for my bad question, I was just irritated why there were two products. If one was more fit than the other etc.
Dave, I'd like to know what kind of top coat you use. I've used a spray on finish and it kind of rubberized, or made my figures very sticky. It was then harder to clean off and start all over again. Thank you!
It was interesting Steve Sansweet had written an article on the three rocket firing Boba Fett's and how to know if someone was selling a true real deal. He said if someone was selling one on eBay 9 times out of 10 it is not one of the originals. As he had one and the other two he knew of were not going to be leaving the owners anytime soon. That being said the first 10,000 figures mailed for those little children back in 1978-9 the ominous Boba Fett mailer one they actually had a spring within the backpack and they could be unmodified so that the rocket could fire out although if you took it apart in the wrong way you destroyed an action figure. But he had the process as to making yours a rocket firing figure. I guess the one trying it would be the guilty party if that said rocket shot into someones mouth and killed them. Kenner was not going to be responsible. They covered the back plastic part of the backpack with a light plastic sheen if your's doesn't have that groove where the pin would go up and down over that part of the pack then maybe it is after the 10,000 or so or not one of the mail order ones.
I have. But most people don't have one, so I want to show what you can do with just basic tools and skills. No point showing something 99% of people can't do. I want the 99% to feel like they can have a go. Cheers

I can imagine Dan at Toy Galaxy screaming at the screen "No they're perfect as they are". 😁
With his hammy over-acting.
Oh boy, Dan Larson must have watched this in absolute terror! 🤣 I know, he loves his Boba's as he finds them.
Lovely restoration! He looks lovely!

When you say its not perfect, but lm happy with that. That means its perfect to me! Great video Dave👍☯️👍
Looks great Dave. Very nicely done. I quite like the olive tint to the chest armour. Always thought the standard green was a bit much.
Thanks. It does look quite nice with this green. It's grown on me.
You have balls of amalgamated steel, my friend. I wear damned white cotton gloves when I handle my Fetts ... in the dark 😄

Your video's have changed my way of toy collecting. Hope you can do every Star Wars figure & veichle on here.
Thanks. I'm slowly working my way through them all 😃
this figure along with R2D2 (Scope) and the Emperor have always been overlooking my keyboards over the years.
Always appreciate when you share what you know Dave.
You're making me want to finish the back of my movie accurate BF that I customized. I ran out of steam and left the back original.
Vallejo is my go to paint. Love the colors and handling, and plus I like that I can take drops from the bottle in stead of having to dip my brush in a jar.
They are certainly easier to get out of the pots. I am never sure I have mixed them enough though just by shaking the bottle.
Those Humbrol Paints are great! I buy them whenever I can for my main wargaming painting miniatures. You got the Vallejo and they have a massive range. Model colour and Game colour are both ranges within it. I highly recommend them.

That gloss really makes it.
Thanks Dave.Nice job. I've been waiting for this one.
Hitting the ground running with the videos this year. Good to see you back.
Nice video as always. I would like to see you modify one fig into a rocket fiering one. =)
Fantastic job! Thanks for the great tutorial
Excellent work, always a fan of the restorations!
Great job Dave. Looks great. Have you thought about making the “Mythasaur” skull decal like you did with the Imperial logo on the AT AT drivers for his shoulder?
I've made a set of stickers for the 12 inch version that you can get from toypolloi.com Certainly would be easy to shrink it down for this.
I much much prefer the green you ended up with.

Should paint one like his cartoon premiere
That's what I wanna do if I find another 12' doll from 78
Tom Griffiths
I painted one as the comic book version , for a friend.
It’s now in his collection on display.

Beautiful job as always
Angelus makes a wide variety of colors and also a duller that will reduce the luster on glossy paints if you can get your hands on it
Dave,
The Force is strong with this one!😁
Great job Dave.
Excellent video
nice paint job
Mixing yellow and black will give you an olive green
Wow looks great
This isn't a critique- this is more curiosity- but... when painting a figure- would having the paint mixed on the same color paper as the figure bring a more accurate color?
Should make no difference as I use the brush next to the paint to see how close the match is.
Great fix, Dave! Ya know, with a little bit more paint, he could be a lot more screen-accurate - way better than what Kenner originally did. :)
This is the way
Most excellent!
I have some questions. A lot of figures I buy that have Mandalorian armor usually have very poor point jobs on their visors. You can remove non factory paint with break fluid. I have shown this often. For painting rest your hand on something to steady it. Cheers
Looks great!

Worth a go. The top coat is meant as a protective layer on top of the paint, as well as giving the desired finish.
Looks amazing.
Great job!
So cool! Can you list where you bought the paints and what colors they are?
Thanks. I list all the numbers I use in the video. Get them online (ebay) or at local model shops. Cheers
I restored a good chunk of my collection in the same way. I prefer Testors acrylic model paint though.
NICE
I just got a Boba too.Right on time.Mine doesn't have not even a teardrop of green n e where.

I've not tried. You could do some tests.
You should thin your paints, goes on so much smoother and cleaner and looks better dried
Great job. Have you ever seen one of the shooting rocket ones irl?
Would you consider making some custom insignia decals for Boba Fett, similar as you did for the Luke Skywalker X-Wing Pilot helmet?
I have then for the 12 inch version. Check out my videos on that. Cheers
@@toypolloi That's where I got the idea. ;)
Just can just print those out smaller and they should work. But they would be so small that it may not be possible to cut them out and apply them.

Think the makers of The Mandalorian may have swiped this idea lately...😅
you could of used a uv nail dryer for the benzol peroxide
Would you recommend de yellowing in peroxide for Bobba Fett? Then painting if needed.

I think he came with all sorts of colours of blaster.
Are these paints any different to the good quality Winsor and Newton oil paints that I use for my general art painting?
Art paints are definitely different. They don't stick to plastic at all well when I've tried.
