Dear Toy Polloi, I was a star wars FANATIC, and until your channel I didn't even know this one existed!!! I fantasized about this, and cloud city in kenner form...
Standing Ovation. THIS toy right here is my holy grail. And to get 1 built, you are spot on. You almost have to sell your first born for that Laser gun attachment arm.
This was one of the few playsets I wasn't that interested in as a child. It never seemed like a Star Destroyer to me, but as an adult I can appreciate the design choices made.
Same here. As a kid, I was like, "How is that a Star Destroyer?! To be honest, I'm still a bit unimpressed by it! The meditation chamber is alright though, I suppose.
I think what this set needs is your Kenner Death Star treatment. The outside of the base could use some graphics to give it a more Star Destroyer exterior look. I also think those two openings in the blue back panel need something to fill them in.
Still need this one for my collection I hope to track it down one day . This was a great video and I know the 2 pieces that are frequently missing to look out for . Glad to see this in your collection .
Nice work! I wish I had known you needed some photos and measurements. Mine is pretty much apart in the box and I could have given you the specs you needed. I have to say that this was one of my least favorite playsets. I bought it using birthday money and was really looking for a snowspeeder, but Sears was out of them and they had this in stock. Darth Vader's chamber never moved up and down smoothly, the secret door would continuously pop open, and the gun would always fall off when you would try to use it.
In addition to filing the plastic clip holding it together, you can also put some wax on them for lubrication to reduce friction that may cause the brittle plastic to break. I use a little chapstick lip balm on the plastic parts that rub against each other, and that helps a lot!
That’s great, I got one in a haul from a while ago but it’s missing the hologram and the gun clip. But it’s still great for display. Thanks for the tips!
Wow! 😲 can you imagine if they done extra parts for this, like a shuttle bay, Vader’s chambers, Emperor ‘s throne room 🤔 with 3D printers now I’m surprised nobody has done it by now
I have added a PDF of the sticker sheet to toypolloi.com Download them here: www.toypolloi.com/index.php/shop/star-wars/product/132-vintage-star-wars-star-destroyer-decals-pdf-free
Great video Pollol just got one of these. My problem was with the back blue panel but I'll try the filing technique and get back to you🙋🏻♂️😀👍 MtfbwU Always
Who does your intro videos? They're always brilliant and 100% faithful to what they're emulating. I've never seen the Sapphire and Steel intro look so clean!
It was always strange how the laser cannon was molded around the Falcon's quad lasers. It's nice to see some appreciation for this set, as it often gets some flak. I mean, it was solid plastic set, no cardboard pieces that kids would destroy in week. And Kenner at least tried to make the environment where Vader spends so much time in ESB.
Thanks Dave, great restoration, I picked one up cheap about 2 years ago. Missing the battery cap, hologram and clip though. Makes a good display piece though. Cheers Ant 👍😊
Hi Dave, great video! I am just about to complete mine... the only thing I'm missing is that white clip where the front landing strut is supposed to slide in (at 22'00" in this video)... the hunt is on!
My brother and I both had one of these, and both of them are still up the loft with all the pieces...but this is the first time I've heard anything about a clip to hold the hologram. Mind you, i only found out last year that it was supposed to be a hologram! Spent 30 years not knowing what the hell it was.
I've too much TMNT playsets in my mind, because seeing those doors makes me wonder if there's some way to connect this set to the Death Star one for some-mega playset. But I doubt it. I remember someone on eBay a few years back made a custom Star Destroyer Bridge playset. I so regret not picking one of those up. I doubt Hasbro will ever make one.
I recently worked on restoring one of these.I was able to make the white section inside of the chamber with a pvc fitting.I also managed to make the red chamber screen and the larger hologram piece out of red acrylic.Still trying to fix the torch part.I refuse to pay $75 dollars on ebay for a bulb holder.
Does anyone know the Canadian equivalent of the ema plastic weld? I have been using gorilla glue and it just does not hold. I cannot find anything here that does the job like he is showing in this video.
I never really 'got' this set. I did find one, years ago, at a car boot sale, and I intended to use it to recreate the 'Bounty Hunter' scene, but it's not big enough. It sat in a box for ages, and eventually, I used the top piece to make a model spacecraft with. The rest? I have a nasty suspicion that it was the recycling bin.
I was wondering. Can I use white spirit to wash plastic models? Or is lighter fluid better, or is there something else I can use when warm water not is enough to take the more harder spots off.
When making clips and things with right angles out of styrene, have you ever tried cutting a V grove, heating the styrene and bending the piece instead of cutting the pieces and then gluing them back together?
Is it easy to get the set apart once put together? Mine is complete but want to dismantle and put back in the box but seems really difficult and dont want to break anything. Cheers
It's not the easiest. That's why I made some changes to mine so it would come apart easier. Just got very slow with it and you 'should' be fine. I hope.
In Germany we know the Bulbs under the name "P13.5s", they can be bought everywhere cheaply, 3Volts is the usual voltage. I can't believe, that they are difficult to find in GB with onlineshopping. They only cost 2-3€.
I restored mine last april, I ended up having to design 3d printable replacements of the hologram clip and the white bulb holder (both up on thingiverse) as there was no way I was paying £40+ for the hologram clip and as for the white bulb bit, I never managed to find one of them in the wild at all. For the bulb I found the easiest option was to get the same one as the AT-AT as it has the skirt on it (£3.45 on eBay search atat bulb)
Those bulbs are Mazda miniature bulbs No. PR6... I found a set on ebay in the vintage flashlight search. Let me know if you'd like them. I'll get them and send them to you.
I agree it would be fun. But I like to keep my videos so 99% of people feel they can have a go. 3D printers are still out of a lot of people's budget. Although saying that, there are a couple of 3d print parts in future videos.
@@toypolloi That’s great, I think similar to what Mighty Jabbas doing where he 3d prints figures could help make customs like a 3d printed and customized Kenner style Mandalorian figure or rocket firing Boba Fett, and replacement weapons
If you are looking for a replacement light bulb, you can also use the same light bulbs which are used in the vintage at at. These lightbulbs are sold on eBay when you search for :"at at replacement light bulb" what I did, was looking at the picture of the bulbs there, and write down the serial number shown on the bulbs, turns out, that you can still by the same old lamps, in sets of ten, at your local electronical store
I know they tried but this really is a bad playset....looks nothing like a star destroyer. I guess they did what they could but when did they hang characters from the ceiling at all in starwars? Wampa cave?
@@thebaker525 I've never seen the thing up close and in person, but none of the photos I've ever seen of it show anything like that; it was just a day-glo plastic strip. I think perhaps they didn't know what the Emperor was going to look like when they were in the process of making the toy. If I'm wrong, though, I'd love it if someone could point us to some good reference material!
Love the new Sapphire & Steel style intro

I had this as a lad! Sure brings back some memories!!
Just found this video. THE INRO IS INCREDIBLE! I love it.
Thanks 👍
It’s definitely not very screen accurate, but I always thought this was a cool playset/vehicle. Great restoration, Dave! Cheers!
I'm going to be making that clip!
One of the holy grails of my childhood. Always circled it in the Argos catalogue for Christmas.

Fantastic video. Glass fibre contact cleaner?! Never heard of it.
I remember the bulb had a metal lip going round it so it sat in place. the button to switch it on was always really stiff.

Great fabricated part. Does anyone know if Tamiyas extra thin cement is as strong as the plastic weld used here?
Did you get the lightbulb feature working? Or did I miss seeing you show it light up Vader inside the chamber?
Looks like he couldn’t find the right replacement bulb in time for the video. Maybe in a follow up video.
Is it a restoration, or is it a repair?
Either way, it's another fantastic job by Dave for Toy Polloi!
It's a restopairation 😅

White spirit will damage the plastic. Cheers
Honest question! Does hot soapy water makes a more significant difference than cold water? BTW love your videos, greetings from Nicaragua, mate!
Soap works best in hot water. It dissolves grease and dirt. Just like if you wash your hands, that should always be with hot water.
When making clips and things with right angles out of styrene, have you ever tried cutting a V grove, heating the styrene and bending the piece instead of cutting the pieces and then gluing them back together?

The same as without the light on. The light barely lights up Darth Vader’s chamber.
@@toypolloi so the light doesn’t make the hologram work? Such a strange toy, Darth Vader just looking at a strip of translucent orange plastic!
