When I was writing Star Wars fan fiction, I gave my protagonist an R5 which he kind of bonded with as they had both felt that the world looked down upon. The smuggler actually spent enough money to purchase a couple of R2s on his R5, often adapting parts originally intended for R2s. About the only issue the droid still had was its personality matrix, it was sharp tongued sarcastic and had figured out how to swear in droidspeak.

Interesting to note that T3-M4 was capable of calculating hyperspace coordinates thousands of years earlier. Though that may not have been standard for T3 units. It was custom built and likely saw many modifications over the years as it served with Revan.
Have no use for one honestly. Maybe it could help me fix my bicycle I guess. But then recharging it would cost me a fortune, if it was even possible with today's tech.

It would be interesting to see a video on competitors, or other models/series astromechs. There's the Q-series, C-series and BB-series. I don't know if anyone else produced astromech or navigation droids, but I'd guess so, considering it's a big galaxy.
Im not going to lie, i love the R-5! Where the R-2 takes decades without its memory being wiped to get personality quirks the R-5 gets them almost right off the showroom floor. As a table top gamer and a hobby writer, that is solid gold to me!
I have to go with the R2 as my all time favorite, you know why. I'll always have a soft spot for the P2 model, I had one as an NPC in my WEG D6 Star Wars campaign.
Also got the R0, whilst not actually a whole astromech it was a replacement part for all the droids that got their heads blasted in the back of x-wings, etc. They needed a cheap replacement to get the droids up and running.
I don't know where you're pulling the replacement thing from. As far as I know there's no source in canon or even EU media that makes that statement. The only RO droids we see are in the Force Awakens and related material and no explanation for their existence is given.
Thank you for your honesty, I too thought the R-8 was the best, but the R-9 I would put at the bottom because of its mistrust of its owners, followed by the rest in order.
Droids have always been my favorite part of Star Wars. Although the CIS made some really cool battle droids, I'd love to see more videos about droids originally introduced during the OT :)
regardless of Design advantages, R2-d2 is definitely one of the most usefull and intelligent astromechs there ever was. not saying that just cause he is main character status... he is a genuine experienced war vet.
7:49 I think it would have been nice cause then you don't need to get google translate, deepl translate, a protocol droid or pencil and paper in order to understand what they are saying
There's one thing I found funny since I watched EPISODE IV, that was my "beginning" with Star Wars, and it's the thing with the R5! The only malfunctioning R5 ever seen in the movies or one of the series was R5-D4, and he blew himself up for the sake of R2-D2! We have seen R5s on big capital ships, plugged into starfighters, in the Senate, the Jedi-Temple, with civilians... ever noticed that one blew up? Surely, R5-D4 wasn't in good shape in THE MANDALORIAN, but that happens with any kind of technology without maintenance. I believe that this is one of the things that never really come to light in live action, like, for example, the information that the E-5 Blaster heats up after some time of use which makes this weapon uncomfortable for the most organics to use after a while.
I’m a little confused on what R4-P17, Chopper, and R6 are then if they aren’t corresponding with the numbers and letters in there name. Are they a separate brand altogether?
My personal favorite of course is the reliable R2 model. You can't beat their dedication to their owners, and the unique (and unmentioned in this video) ability to expand their personality subroutines to become true individuals. The R8 series was superb, certainly, but they were too clinical.
In a book-trillogy about Correllia, that set 18ABY, there was an hevily modificated astromech, who was able to speak. I haven't the number in mind and am not even sure, if he was from the R-Series, but there where a couple of strange stuff in this trillogy...
The R7 never made sense to me. Guess they don't have reverse compatibility? OK, new fighter, needs more and more specific abilities, I can buy that, but if it's only going to work in that one craft, why not just build it into it? Much simpler approach, and it worked for the delta 7s. It can come out to accompany the pilot, but that's not what its for. It could basically do the same via comms. Why not build one with the new specs that could in a pinch serve aboard a "lesser" craft if need be? I might also be biased against the e wing, sorry, it's just ugly in the bad way. The k wing is ugly in the good way lol. Now if someone would just make a kit dammit.
my guess, or at least why I'd opt for a removable doid over the Aethersprite half-droid approach, would be security. Your droid can go into the briefing room, physically jack into a terminal, and download the jump coordinates, then physically take them to your ship. No transmission at any point. Now, *any* astromech can do that of course, for the same reason IRL fighters still use freaking tape drives in some cases. But that ability is nothing to scoff at, so it might be something a manufacturer would opt for a specialized droid for. My assumption as to why it couldn't attach to other starfighters? llimited socket-space. if the E-wing required some unusual connectors or extra cryptographic hardware, that might get in the way. Buuuuut I'd agree that making it at least basically backwards compatible wouldn't be a bad idea even if it increased cost. a Droid's gonna be cheaper than the fighter it's stuffed in regardless.
Was hoping this video would go more specifics about each droid like the tools and processing power, but instead you just read the stuff straight from wikipedia...
I’m confused. I thought that the R6 was introduced after Ep. 6 5:40. Why then Ahsoka used in the Clone Wars a R7 Droid: R7-A7? And you also show pictures of Ahsoka as R7 in the video 6:34. Or why Looks Obi WANs Droid R4-P17 nothing like a R4 Astromech?
The R5's disadvantages reminds me of how fossil fuels are admittedly more expensive in hindsight compared to eco-friendly substitutes. Cheap at first, but eventual repair work and maybe even taxes make it unwieldy and untrusted, with the competition being expensive at first, but need less maintenance and risk in return. 7:37: Also, darn, and to heck with the talk of heresy!
@@maxxor-overworldhero6730 Simply put, alternative fuel doesn’t work nearly as well as fossil fuel right now. And no one is willing to put up with the shortcomings and inconvenience considering the pollution problems haven’t been fixed. You can either let the fossil fuel power plants do the polluting or you can do it with your car. Somehow these people feel better about themselves when they cannot see the polluting they’re doing. When you use alternate transportation or an electric car you’re just fooling yourself and placing the pollution as far from your sight as possible but it’s still there. Classic case of out of sight, out of mind. How did we go from talking about Star Wars to somebody’s immature and unrealistic solution to the global energy crisis anyway? Weren’t we all talking about Astromech droids before that other person decided to ruin the conversation with their politics?
What about the T-7 series? They were astromech, as well. They existed in Old Republic times, just like the P1. And they were far more efficient (and compact).
Solid rundown. I think you were a bit harsh on the R4, though. For all that it was a stripped down R2, what was left was polished and refined, and its price was still cheaper than the R5. For a small business or hobbyist mechanic the R4 was a quality product. The designers paid attention to what the customers needed and wanted, and the R4 delivered. But if I had to pick a favorite, I have to pick the R2. I'm not fond of the flowerpots and the R8's camera is just weird. That leaves the 2, 3, and 7. There's no contest.
I have a soft spot for T3-M4 from 'Knights of the Old Republic'. I have thought it would be a neat idea if a family had a T-Series and kept moding it till no-one remembers what it started out as.
I'm not so sure that's canon anymore. I believe in the disney ANH Novelization, it's R2-D2 who talks to R5-D4 and pleads with him. R5 has like a gut feeling that he was also apart of the rebellion, like the word was just familiar even though he had a memory wipe, and he fakes a malfunction to get R2 sold. Before that though, the original ANH novelization stated that R2-D2 sabotage R5 in order to escape. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the former is the current canon explanation.
@@corellioncrusaderproductio4679 I never heard of either of those versions but sounds like something R2 would do. But what I said could also be an alternative Universe Story. Star Wars had planty of them even before Disney with Infinities and The Force Unleashed.
R2 units always stand out for their usefulness. Weren't they also popular for their ease of modification? I actually built an R6 at Galaxy's Edge a few years ago. I went with red and paid extra to get a kit to replace his regular panels with orange ones to match the droid I imagined for a bounty hunter character I dreamed up in elementary school.

Excellent video i didn't even know that there where so many types of R units thank you for the information and for expanding the Star Wars universe unlike the videos other people make where they make the same video over and over and you end up learning nothing
My favorite are the T3 series there quite resourceful thank you for the video 10/10.
It would be interesting to see a video on competitors, or other models/series astromechs. There's the Q-series, C-series and BB-series. I don't know if anyone else produced astromech or navigation droids, but I'd guess so, considering it's a big galaxy.
i would have a r9 or a r3 or a r8 doid because the look amazing
I’m guessing a lot of this isn’t canon anymore? Because Kit Fisto had an R6 and Ahsoka had an R7
I like the R4 units. I always said if I was in the Star Wars galaxy, I would have an R4 rolling around my area of residence.
It makes me wonder if IA would ever make an R-10.

"What is your trust setting TARS?"
"Lower than yours apparently"
@@amstrad00 I got it from the guys who made them.
Great video, I hope to see one about the protocol droids next. They are some of my favorites out of the lot
R2s and R3s definitely are the coolest ones!
R4 deserves more love.
I do love r4 series droid
Which R4, the basic or the P variant?
I always like the R4 design because it looks like a cone
7:49 I think it would have been nice cause then you don't need to get google translate, deepl translate, a protocol droid or pencil and paper in order to understand what they are saying
And good luck getting them to write with those claws
I would take the R2, R4, R6, R8, and R9 models. Also, I would combine the best qualities of the R2 with the R9.
Hello there fellow engineer. May The Force be with you. Your droids are on the way, enjoy.
The best was probably the r9, at least once it was modified to never withhold information from its owner.
Narrator: "the clear-domed R3"
Image: **R3-S6, which doesn't have the clear dome typical of R3 units**
Me: **confused laughing**
1:40 OI! That's MY DESIGN! :D
Was hoping this video would go more specifics about each droid like the tools and processing power, but instead you just read the stuff straight from wikipedia...
I wonder how the old Republic's T-Series droids stacked up to the R series droids
I would have to say my favourite R-series astromech is the R2, but I do like the appearance of the R5.
They need to canonize the rest of them!
I know canonically the R2 is top unt R8 and R9 but I will be forever partial to the R4 for it's cool shape
EPIIs
R4-G9 is my favourit. how does he fit into your scheme?
I’m biased but that honor belongs to the R2 series.
Quick question, do you know what is used to fuel EV charging stations?
@@maxxor-overworldhero6730 Fossil fuels
@@historicflame972 Bingo.
@@maxxor-overworldhero6730
Simply put, alternative fuel doesn’t work nearly as well as fossil fuel right now.
@@leroyjenkins4811 Beats me.
Luke‘s R5 from a New Hope was Force Sensitive and self-sacrificed itself to help R2 come together with Luke.
Not canon
@@TheRebelTitan55 I know. That’s not the point. It’s a fun little story. Doesn’t need to be Canon to be fun and interesting.
T7-series astromech droid
R2 units always stand out for their usefulness. Weren't they also popular for their ease of modification?
I actually built an R6 at Galaxy's Edge a few years ago. I went with red and paid extra to get a kit to replace his regular panels with orange ones to match the droid I imagined for a bounty hunter character I dreamed up in elementary school.
I had an R5 unit in Star Wars Galaxies. I miss my little buddy. And my Y-Wing. And my homestead on Tatooine. And my Phase 2 clone armour...
Uh, you forgot the Q7, Q9, S19, and Blastomech.
Either way, do you guys think The Lego Group will ever bite the bullet and reintroduce that old geometric cone piece from themes like Aquanauts and use it for R4-Series Astromech Droid Minifigs?
there were probably 10s of thousands of R2-D2's (and all the others) made, they were just a mass produced consumer product, but people act like theres only one of each
Different mechs for different major systems on a large ships- shields, weapons, wifi router, etc.
I remember all of these from The Essential Guide to Droids.
On design, imo the R5 gets my vote
Oops someone didn’t get the memo for the R4 in Obi-wan’s fighter.
