The occurrences of anachronistic numbering in Clone Wars era droids (using number designation that seem decades before they canonically should exist) is not necessarily a continuity error. Using the Letter-Number pattern (the D2 in R2 D2) would only allow numbering of up to 260 units . For general sale, it is not such a big deal having a number of droids with the same name; during the Clone Wars, this would prove to be a huge problem for a military the size of the Galactic Republic. Using a yet (well into the future) undersigned model number would allow for more variety in droid names.
The R4 would be my top choice, especially given that my pickup could use some repairs and body work, and all I'd need is an oil bath machine and a recharge station as "payment" for the little guy! 😁👍

I love the design of the R5 series. I’d probably customize it to function at a similar quality to the R2 or R4 series. I’d give it blue and black trimming. Its name would be Shelby. Like the Shelby Cobra car.
Regarding the droids with R7 and R8 designations in the clone wars, I always thought that they named that way because the Republic had more R2 units than the naming system allowed for. With naming system being the droid model followed by two numbers or letters means there can only be about 1300 unique names for any given model. My guess is that the Republic just gave a lot of droids a different designation not used by an existing model. For example R7-A7 could still be an R2 and a droid like RG-G1could just be an R4 with a different name.
According to a Lucasfilm exec (I think it was Leland Chee, but don't quote me on that) the R2s, 3s, and 4s with R(higher number) designations got those numbers from their full serial number, as one might be R2-A7-P3 and it would be shortened to R7-P3 or something.
Im thinking before model release names may have been some of the earlier modified R series units. It was modified, therefore not a true R2 or R3 model. So they gave them different names. Continuity error fixed. 😊
I would go for an R6. She would have a mix of colors, including evergreen, sand blue, medium azure, and magenta. Evergreen would be the base of the torso and legs. The torso/leg accents would be the sand blue. The head base is medium azure, with magenta would be the head accents. Her head would still be that of your average R6, but it would have an antenna attachment and a dish attachment. I would modify her to be able to hold 46 different hyperspace coords. She would also have a plasma torch arm, a buzzsaw arm, a scomp link (cuz every astromech needs one), and a grapling hook. The eye on her head would be modified to be hexagonal in shape. She would come equipped with those rocket boosters some astromechs have. She would have a tazer arm. She would be one of the less common female droids (don't know why they're so rare but they are). And her name would be R6-CD78.
I like that R7 unit with the triangular eye it would look good in a white color with teal and purple accents similar to a jazz style solo cup that were commonly seen in the 90s and early 2000s
From when I was a kid I liked R5-D4. Possibly I felt sorry for him, blowing a motivator and being left behind. I like the head design too. Now I find out that his series were cheaped out on. Poor little fellas.
He actually blew his motivator on purpose in the old canon, not sure what Disney decided on for him. In the old canon, R2-D2 had informed him of the importance of him leaving to save the galaxy from the Empire and because of how passionate the droid was R5-D4 chose to blow his own motivator out to force Luke to buy R2-D2. He really took one for the team, and without him the Empire never could have been defeated. Also like that other guy said, the Mandalorian gave him a great expansion on his story
This is a fun video! Thanks! What is the source for this info, specifically the R-Series chart? Is it a visual dictionary? I understand you gleaned info from many sources but any info you have would help! Thanks!
It has always bothered me that the R8 series didn't have some type of "eye" sensor. It makes it seem to be basically, a "blind" droid, that would have to remain mostly stationary. That would limit a lot of the functionality that astromech droids are well known for.
@@zufalllxnah, some R2 units got R(higher number) names based on their full serial number. I forget which Lucasfilm exec said that, but I think it was Leland Chee, back in like 2010 or so. Since you had droids named R6, R9, etc. during the clone wars, despite that none of those existed until the New Republic or even the Galactic Alliance era.
I built an R-Series droid at Galaxy's Edge a few weeks ago. I used the black and silver R2 dome, white body and legs, and a black third wheel. I swapped out the panels for the metallic teal panels. I named it R2-M0, or Aretoo-Amnought.

I've ALWAYS wondered WHY every astromech was referred to as "R2 units", especially since they were preceded by a R1 series - now I know!! COMMERCIAL POPUALRITY!!
The Star Wars Droidworks game had a droid naned RD-RR, and you could ask it to tell you jokes (rather lame ones, I seem to recall). I don't remember what family that droid actually looked like, though.
Your thumbnail calls the red one an R5 unit. I know this was retroactive continuity, but Luke even called that red on another R2 unit.. "Uncule Owen... this R2 unit has a bad motivator, look!" That was another R2 unit, just of a different chassis. :P at least originally.
...Something like I've written on my fanfiction; outter shell, internal frame and tools/accessories of an R2, the advanced sensors, memory banks and "brain" of an R3, and the hardware and software parts of a 3PO protocol droid necessary to enable multilingual capabilities...
Cool Easter egg. The Droid in the E-Wing socket in Asohka has a head that was designed after the terribly inaccurate original Kenner R2-D2 action figure. So that head is now canon! Also, you need to add the R0 head from the sequels.
Funny how the R series kinda resembles Star Wars as a whole. Star Wars as a whole. The P2 was like script for the original films, pioneering. Before A New Hope there was a not as sucessful film, symbolong the R1. after this everything banged like the original series. The R3 was not as successful due to a lot of extra features, which weren't going to make necessarily more successful, like the prequels that were still successful, but had some features like jar jar binks. after this the R4 had some increased durability, though weren't as successful without the R2 head, just like Clone Wars on it's own due to the messed up chonology, although it had increased lenght, however in combination with the prequels you could put it into context and it was destined to skyrocket. But then came the R5, a "A meter-tall stack of the worst business decisions you could possibly want, just like the sequels...
That R1 that almost ended up in Luke hands, I wonder what amazing stories and adventures that Droid have been on since he's like many decades older than RT D2 ? It could have been on a massive high Republic battleship which Jedi did the Droid encounter? How many times was he almost blown to a million pieces !
R4 , would name it Groszek and the modification would be uploading data that would allow it to fix cars 😏 Business so good it would pay for its own maintainance 😂 coloured in neon yellow/orange and white for safety😇 And yes, I say it as in a timeline where the technology reached Earth somehow 😅
I THINK THAT I WOULD WANT 2 OWN RD-D2 OR A CUSTOM BULIT R2 UNIT RD D3 IN SXY GREEN & ORANGE LIKE THE MYSTERY MACHINE FROM SCOOBY DOO OR PAINTED SXY ORANGE & PURPLE OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT BUT W/ THE SXY FEDEAR Q2B SIRENS ETC PLUS THE SXY ROTO RAY SIRENS 8X/8 TIMES
If I could only have one astromech (R-5 is an easy NO); I would go with a R-6. White body and head with red stripes. Default styled head. Jet thrusters modded onto the legs. Would be named Sureshot.
I can't pick my fave. R2 is classic, iconic, and no one can beat that. That said, an R4 for Space Redneckery or an R8 for Space Trucking would be pretty nice.
Does it bother anyone else that with the serial number for each droid in the series only being 2 characters (1 letter, 1 number) - there can only be 26x10 (260) droids of each class?? Only 2600 R class in total!
I like to think that Industrial Automaton had a deal with the Jedi Order that outfitted jedi with highly experimental prototype astromechs including very late series versions as seen with Mace Windu. These versions would later be redesigned to fit the needs they now service. I feel like business dealings like this would have been minor sources of mistrust with the general public that would begin to see the Jedi not as a religious organization but as a business making profits amidst a galactic war. It's also possible that Industrial Automaton simply saw the Jedi as the perfect group for testing their products considering their tendency to traverse the galaxy and travel to planets that have wildly varying conditions.
As much as I love r2 bb8 and the bb series completely stole the adorable sassy hilarious and brave little toaster robot side kick role for me! Doesn’t mean I’m hating on r2 though he’s the king of the droids always

The R4 would be my top choice, especially given that my pickup could use some repairs and body work, and all I'd need is an oil bath machine and a recharge station as "payment" for the little guy! 😁👍
I think a cool video idea would be where you describe every single droid/astromech in all of starwars
I went to Disney, and I built my own Astro Mac
Thats super cool I want to do it now
It was fun. I made an R4 Unit
I didn't know Apple existed in the Star Wars universe
I know what you mean but I couldn't pass up the opportunity
I think its funny there are so many R4 droids replaced with R2 heads. I can only image star wars characters everywhere collectively hated the cone heads so much
Watching these small drones attacking starfighters, and wondering why the Jedi are letting them destroy their droid companions, rather than force-pushing them off? I've seen them do tougher things with little issue, not sure why they didn't do this more often.
Maybe the buzz droids were sterilized. I heard that Jedi can’t use the force on things that aren’t living or covered in living things.
@@Cretaceous158 Possibly, but I don't know. It would definitely explain some situations, but I feel like even sterilized medical equipment can be, and possibly has been thrown before. But again, that would definitely make some interesting sense!
0:28 Ok so what's the name of the black and purple R2 Astromech droid 28 seconds in? That's my pick right there!
RU mace win-2
Those R1s sure do look more than a little Dalek-y.
Dalek: EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!
I love R2, but T3 will always be my fave astromech droid
Make a R t10 to Rt34. The T stands for tank equipment concussion misseles, laser cannon. Plasma spraying cannons, plastic trapping net guns for police, and animal control use.
Might I suggest an explanation of the C series astromechs?
What if industrial automation gave the Jedi order high council access to some of their late series prototypes for beta testing field data 🤔
So then did R2 receive regular updates? I'm thinking of the time I think it was Luke who said "thats alright, I'll hold onto the controls for now".
R5 series will always be my favorite R series astromech :)
I like that R7 unit with the triangular eye it would look good in a white color with teal and purple accents similar to a jazz style solo cup that were commonly seen in the 90s and early 2000s
Just how much more memory did the R3 need when the R2 could hold the entire plans of a space station?
From when I was a kid I liked R5-D4. Possibly I felt sorry for him, blowing a motivator and being left behind. I like the head design too.
Now I find out that his series were cheaped out on. Poor little fellas.
R5 got treated better in the Mandalorian. He ended up serving in the rebellion
I would love to have an r2 or r7 series. With my luck it would have the t800s personality matrix.
I love Astro mech droids
I’m just glad R5 finally got hit due.
I hate the way automaton was pronounced. Which was probably intentional so that people like me would comment on it.
This is a fun video! Thanks! What is the source for this info, specifically the R-Series chart? Is it a visual dictionary? I understand you gleaned info from many sources but any info you have would help! Thanks!
The P-2 and R-1 are a ridiculous size. It would be severely limited in what it can do and where it can go.
I believe the R5 was the only "Force" sensitive droid.
It has always bothered me that the R8 series didn't have some type of "eye" sensor.
It makes it seem to be basically, a "blind" droid, that would have to remain mostly stationary.
That would limit a lot of the functionality that astromech droids are well known for.
R4 with a dome head. Perfect for highway travel and better than google maps.
I'd have a classic R2 unit, named R3-G1, aka "Reggie"
Then you'd have an R3
Clever 😊
I am a solid R-5 fan, and have had a soft spot for the little guys since A New Hope.
R10 d3 I think it would have allot of cross between r2 and r9 units and looks allot like the r2's
What about the r0 astromech droid?
FEED THE SNAIL
I know he ain't an R series, I dunno if he's even an atromech but T3-M4 is no2 next to R2 and R4
It wouldn't be Star Wars without Dave Filoni induced continuity issues.
Facts 😂
They still have to canonize the rest of them.
Not all of them
I don't know if we should be taking opinions on morality from Chopper.
R2d2 was the true hero of StarWars
Your voice sounds AI dude. there's like a subtle drunk sound effect at the end of your voice.
But didn't have Obi-Wan during the Clone wars R4 which looked basically the sayas R2?
What about the T- series which included T3 from KotOR?
I've never heard anyone call a tissue a Kleenex before...
R2-D2 IS THE KING OF THE R-SERIES ASTROMECHS! He's a little ass-kicker! 😅😅😅😅😅😅😂😂😂
can you make a video on bb 8's lineup of astromechs
it just seems to be version 1 that is bb8 and i tried searching for bb lineup or history of bb and none exists
Never have I heard anyone call a tissue a Kleenex
aw-TOM-uh-tahn
Cool video!
Leave a like on this comment if you want your own astromech droid
I do
I do!!
I wish I could like this 100 times over
I really want to go to Disneyland Star Wars experience just to get an R2 Astromech Droid
@kianCampbell-wf8bb
I have one
Your thumbnail calls the red one an R5 unit. I know this was retroactive continuity, but Luke even called that red on another R2 unit..
"Uncule Owen... this R2 unit has a bad motivator, look!"
That was another R2 unit, just of a different chassis. :P at least originally.
Is this based on Canon only, or is this also include Droids from the EU? Isn't a T3 considered an Astromech Droid? How about a HK series?
Suggestion:every Rebel and separatist cruisers type and variants
...Something like I've written on my fanfiction; outter shell, internal frame and tools/accessories of an R2, the advanced sensors, memory banks and "brain" of an R3, and the hardware and software parts of a 3PO protocol droid necessary to enable multilingual capabilities...

If any of you know what’s happens to this poor droid in the clone wars… I’m so sorry. This droid met a BRUTAL end.
"The P2 series was the first droid build and marketed as an astromech"
T7 series: "What are we, chopped liver?"
Warthunder spam ends at 4:40. Put this garbage at the end of the videos please
Let me guess you play world of tanks
@@Beef-man nah I get the vibes that he's a 60 year old dude who's nevers heard of RUclips sponsorships before
As much as I love r2 bb8 and the bb series completely stole the adorable sassy hilarious and brave little toaster robot side kick role for me!
Doesn’t mean I’m hating on r2 though he’s the king of the droids always
The last “s” in “chassis” is silent.
What if the r series was all the Jedi that passed before reaching master
T3-M4 is the only droid for me!
Meh. I like to think Fisto had a prototype R6, explaining why he has an R6 earlier than they were supposed to exist.
Are there any SW series with old and new republic?
I would love to have an R6 personally but I would be fine with an R5 and just upgrade him/her when ever I had time to turn them into a semi R6.
If you count from A1 to Z9, you only get 260 droids before you run out of names. How many R2 units were made?
If I had to pick one, it would have to be the R2 series. The design is iconic and influence on the Star Wars series is massive. You can't help but to think of R2-D2 if you know about the series.
