It's funny to hear americans talk about "compact pick-up trucks" like the Ranger, which are just called "pick-up" here in France and are the biggest individual cars we can buy ^^
Exactly, Ranger is a regular pick for us in South Africa. First time I saw a "American truck" I was wondering where on earth are they gonna park that thing!.
The mid size is a massive Ute over here in nz. Compare the ranger to my 93 courier compact. The size difference is nuts. Then there’s the full size. Called a yank tank.
I call double cab long beds locomotives cus they're fucking enormous and unless im.remodeling a yard or hauling a 5th wheel, my 01 forester could hold as much with the seats folded
Only in the US you'll hear someone say "I live in the city and it's hard to find a parking spot. Let's buy a 5 METER LONG (199.7 in) TRUCK". You lot should visit Athens, my car is 4 meters long (~ 157.5 in) and there are still many places where it's impossible to find a parking spot.
I own a Ford F-250 super çrew with a wench on the front, I actually need it for work or I would have a 150 crew cab as I do haul a boat and tote stuff in the back all the time, but need room for my family as I can't ride in most cars do to a back injury. Anyway, that thing is huge! If I park it the way I'm supposed to, it takes up 1 and a half parking places front to back. Finding parking for it is especially hard. I was at a Drs appointment the other day and they had really small spots, so I had to jump the curb and then back up to get it straightened out in the space. The person parked next to me, I didn't know they were still in their car when I started parking, not that it would have stopped me from doing what I had to, freaked out when they seen this giant diesel 4x4 extended cab truck with 36" tires and a tube steal brush guard with a giant wench hanging off the front, come up and jump over the curb right next to them. Their eyes where wide open as was their mouth and after I was done, they moved their car to a spot a few spaces down lololol. Sometimes they're fun that way lol.
Wish it would have been offered in North America. Sadly, the housing crash of 08 killed that. Now eventually killed the entire Holden company as well :( So sad. I've loved them since I seen the little slipper looking truck when I first went to Australia in 2001.
So it's interesting, I recently-ish (last year) bought my first truck a 2010 f-150. Originally I wanted something more in the midsize category because a full size seemed like more truck than I really needed. But what I found when I started looking was mid size trucks are just as expensive if not more so than their full size counterparts, got the same crappy gas mileage (at least for the years I was looking at), could haul way less, and were really hard to find with the features I wanted (ability to seat 4 with some level of comfort and at least a 6 foot bed. Which ended up with me getting happily won over to the dark side.
I've never owned a truck, but I've sure driven a lot of them for work, and borrowed a lot of them from friends, when I needed them. I'm glad someone is buying them.
@@Joe_Dirt82 *_it seems they are making a come back, but nowdays they are crazy lifted with monstertruck tired and bright neons all over it with Mexico representing stickers LOL_*
He left out that the chicken tax encouraged the loss of the mini-pickup for a very long time. Also maybe because of CAFE standards, trucks have become what were once the oversized and expensive caddies, Lincolns and Ford LTD's with huge engines prior to the early 1980's. Not that work trucks don't exist or that not currently counted in cafe standards now.
Not to mention midsizes have existed for over two decades, more or less starting with the Ford Sport Trac and Colorado in 2001, when the Tacoma was still considered more of a compact. I'm still annoyed they never mention my fav the Sport Trac... Not here or the vid they did on Explorers...
I used to think my truck would be categorized as a pavement princess… after seeing the average statistics, Mine is basically an off-road heavy haul machine. Once a year??? Is that real?
@Donut Media - one thing you left out of the compact truck conversation was fuel economy. An extended cab Ranger with the V6 only managed 1MPG better than a crew-cab, 6ft box F150 with the largest 5.4L V8. Thus, it was a terrible value proposition.
Nolan you got one detail wrong my guy. The Dakota was really the first introduction in the mid size segment. Taco's of the time were still compact trucks at that point, then grew into a mid size across the generations. They certainly popularized it, but were not the first entry.
The 90s Dakotas were great, although that convertible one they offered in the late 80s (or was it early 90s) was sweet. Personally, I want to see Chevy/GM revive the Syclone and Typhoon as compact sports trucks and cuvs
The Dakota (first year 87) was out for more than a handful of years before the Tacoma name surfaced (first year 95). Toyota trucks were still just called "pickup" at that point.
We have always had an old 1983 ford f250 XLT diesel we have always loved it. Bought it for about 500 bucks pretty rusty needed a new clutch and air conditioning we got all fixed bought it a new dash board and we used it to haul out old tree branches, but we mainly used it to haul out jet ski to the lake but since we have gotten rid of the jet ski it just been collecting dust in our shop
Nissan Frontiers with a manual transmission averaged less than 9 hours on the sales lot from 2004 through 2020 when they stopped offering the stick. That BLOWS the shit out of the Hyundai.
As someone that owns and drives a Tacoma regularly and hauls stuff everyday, there are FAR too many people that own trucks. What's worse is most of those people have no idea how to drive a truck.
Lets be fair. Most people cant drive in general. My 19 year old Tacoma just got totaled by a stupid youngster running a red light in a mustang. I loved that truck
Donut Media, Thank you for putting out this video, and especially using that Strategic Vision survey which I too often quote. I also am very happy to see truly small trucks make a return. So, I am one of those Honda Ridgeline owners that "Real Truck" owners surveyed by Strategic Vision love to hate on, first of a 2017 and as of October a new 2021. Heck, my dad, a lifetime Chevy 1/2 Ton driver, initially gave me heat on the 2017. These days, dad sings a different tune. Sure, he still buys 1/2 tons, including a new 2021 Silverado RST Z71 crew cab in August. What has changed is that since 2017 he has seen that much of what he does with his truck, mine kept up with. Park them side by side, they have the same ground clearance (well almost, 7.7" for the Honda, 8.01" for the Silverado). Look up their stock approach/breakover/departure angles, they are almost identical (actually mine are better as his breakover is ruined by the 4" tube running boards he added and I put larger tires on mine so in reality I have the same 8" ground clearance, too). Payload, same story for how his is equipped we are functionally identical at 1500lbs. He has the crew cab 5.5' box, I have a box that is only 2" shorter than his. Now, the 2 items everyone discounts the Ridgeline for are off-roading and towing, which SV's survey shows most truck owners never or rarely do. To be fair, yes the Honda is not an off-road machine or the best capacity tower. Even then, as pointed out above for ground clearance and the angles, my dad's Z71 only has one feature that makes it more off-road ready than the Honda, being 4x4 with rear locker, not AWD. Yet, my dad doesn't go off-road (other than some rough gravel with little mud puddles my Honda handles just fine, as does my mom's Outback), he has the 4x4 for the Wisconsin winters, in which the AWD actually performs better since it is always active and can be used on dry pavement. As for the towing, he does not own a single trailer that I cannot also pull. Let's break down our combined largest towing items: 16' enclosed utility trailer for a Mahindra Max25 tractor, GVWR 4400lbs (dad's); 23' Lund boat with 200hp outboard, GVWR 4300lbs (dad's); 17' Coleman Lantern LT 17b camper, GVWR 3800lbs (mine), 18' Aluma trailer (mine) with 1 Honda Pioneer 1000 (mine) and 1 Polaris RZR 570 (dad's), about 4400lbs. So, again, between the 2 of us we have no trailers that the Honda cannot tow (also, I can load his RZR 570 into the bed of the Honda with ease). When either of us wants to do serious off-roading, we use those 2 UTVs mentioned above, and we usually use my Honda to get them to the trails. Why, because my MPG towing the two UTVs is still the same as his when towing nothing, and mine rides better and is more maneuverable for parking at the trail head by virtue of being shorter. Another interesting thing: My insurance costs significantly less than his annually (both of us have perfect driving history, great credit, and the only insurance claims we have ever submitted were for deer accidents or hail storms). My dad once asked me what I would do if I ever needed to pull a trailer over 5000lbs. I told him that I would either borrow his Chevy, or (more likely) rent a half ton for a day. He asked why, and I pointed out that I could rent a half ton for 2 straight days for what I save in insurance annually vs his Chevy, and for a 5 if I combined annual gas and insurance savings. So why pay more every year on an off chance I "might" ever need more capability when I could pocket that money and simply rent or borrow a larger truck if the occasion ever presents itself? This same applies to the new Maverick and the Santa Cruz, and I hope both of them sell like hotcakes, further validating the unibody light truck market, and maybe getting people to buy sensibly. Heck, I would love for Dodge to make a new Durango-based Rampage truck, and for Subaru to revive the BRAT and Baja to really light this market up. Also, that "But what if you need more capability someday" argument is such BS. Why? That same argument could be turned around on every truck owner. So, your crew cab seats 5, but what if you have a 4th kid? Just in case, you better get a 3 row SUV/CUV or a minivan. Oh, you got a crew cab with a 5.5' bed, what if you ever need an 8' bed, better buy a Crew Cab Long Box Super Duty. What if you need more ground clearance some day for a 1-time off-road trip? Better pass on that RST Z71 and get a Trail Boss or Raptor or Tremor. Your F150 tows 12k lbs, but if you ever need 13k? Better get a 3/4 ton Super Duty. If my needs ever permanently change, I will buy the appropriate vehicle then, until then I have a vehicle that meets my current needs and I can easily temporarily access more capability if temporarily needed. Don't buy on the what-ifs especially if they are really unlikely, find what you need (or want) and buy that, then leave the rest of us who did the same for ourselves alone!
Very well said! Bought a 2011 Ridge with 115K miles on it in 2015. Sold it to my boss at the 247K mark, it's still on the road. Pulled a 5,500 pound 21' bowrider boat and trailer a couple of times a week, zero problems. The in-bed trunk is a gem, as is the composite bed. 4WD got me up mountain roads in snow that full-size trucks couldn't navigate. Ever drove around a stuck Ram 4WD in a ditch, backed up, and pulled him out. Yes, he was VERY embarrassed that a Ridge pulled him out. Bought a 2018 GMC Canyon Denali new, towed that same boat. It could easily tow it, and handled deep snow like a champ. Folks discount mid-sizes without ever giving them a chance. Did the Ridgeline have an independent suspension? Yes, as did the baddest offroad truck in history, the Lamborghini LM002!
Seeing the numbers on truck use just is amazing. I'm always saying that not many people need as big of a vehicle as they have. And the statistics prove the point, buying a truck but not using it to haul/tow/etc. And even SUVs, I would hear so many people at the dealership I worked at say they are expecting or have one child so the sedan wouldn't work but that's exactly why the sedan was created! For small families! And yet so many people rush to SUVs and trucks, honestly I believe at least 85% of American vehicle owners could downgrade to a smaller vehicle with no problem. But hey it's your money, don't let my moaning get in the way

Nolan, what about the Honda Ridgeline? Both in 2006 and 2017, it was first in the unibody city "truck" segment. Chevy Avalanche and Ford Explorer SportTrac were both body on frame.
You forgot to mention the Nissan Frontier in the mid-size and the Nissan Titan in the full-size classes. The Nissan was the first actual Japanese full-size truck. Before you start to argue the Toyota T100/Tundra wasn't classified as full-size until current generation.
It’s funny to me that everyone is so worried about what another person does with THEIR money and choices lol. I own a 2016 Sierra Denali, never once towed and maybe hauled a full bed of stuff once or twice in a few years. I just like the comfortability, space, power and knowing that I have it whenever I do need it. People get so worked up. Not everyone wants their truck all beat up and muddy. Mines a garage queen.
I feel you man. I love my truck too. These guys just don't get it. Having a truck just to have a truck is great. Also trucks tend to have bigger and more powerful engines than their car counterparts anyway.
@@GSC-Operator-chan my point exactly. In case the need for a bed ever comes, I have it and another thing, they hold their value if taken care of so why buy a car that depreciates so bad just driving off the lot.
same here. i just bought a new 4x2 DMax so you know it's gonna be a pavement princess with some occasional dirtroads and flash floods. and with the roads condition here and the way i drive, i dont think sedans and SUVs could handle it long-term lol.
I agree more people have 1500’s today than 10/15 years ago and are not used like trucks today like they were then, but full size SUVs have a 20k or more price tag today also thus raising their popularity. IMO
I love the sponsorships bc they're so clever! But honestly who else was half expecting James to come up and tell Jerry about the existence of headphones then turn to the camera and say "this video isn't sponsored, we just thought you all needed to know that"
I think the recent demand for compact trucks is more due to price. Compact trucks now are pretty much the same in size and capability as full size trucks from back in the day, while being a 1/2 the price of a modern fill size pickup lol
The F150 is America's #1 sold truck for one reason: their contracts with the General Services Administration. $8.6 Billion with a B this year alone. It's the pickup of the US Government. And they have *_absurd_* numbers of them in the fleet. From Army bases to the Social Security administration, if you go to sign out a pickup, you're probably getting an F150.
I get what you're saying but that's not how the gsa works. Ford Chevy and Dodge are all allowed to bid and when I put in a request for any size of vehicle I get the one which cost the least and meets requirements like everything else the government does.
It’s funny how you talk about the Ranger coming back in 2018. In Australia it never left. You should check out Australia’s Ute (pickup) market. It’s flooded with the Hilux, Ranger and Triton 🤙
Classic Toyota pickup/hilux is the best truck ever made because it's small, reliable and does everything most weekend warriors require. If you need anything bigger than a Tacoma size, then you really should be making money with your truck, other old diesel owners will know the strife of maintenance cost on large vehicles. What we need are the manufacturers to go back to small trucks and bring out some small electric go pickem up trucks, not super large tanks, even if electric - cyber truck.
The reason a lot if people go full size is because they're cheaper than mid size. I bought a used Rsm 1500, and Tacoma's from the same generation with higher mileage were selling for 60% more at the time. Mid size trucks are really expensive.
I find it hilarious how the bed of most crew cab trucks appear to hold less than the bed of a compact of yesteryear. I've had to haul stuff for my dad in my Ram with a 6' 3" bed because the bed of his crew cab Silverado was a little too short. The truck really has become the family station wagon for a lot of people. And unlike most truck owners mine tows 1-2 times a week because I spend more time in my bass boat than I do my truck. I really do think the compact trucklets that have come back on the market are the perfect option for most truck owners and way more affordable too. Even midsize trucks have gotten out of hand on price if you add any options. Good thing I have a utilitarian mindset and am happy with the Tradesman trim level on my Ram. I does have the HEMI, carpet, cloth seats, and power windows, locks, and mirrors and that's all I wanted. I do think anyone who buys more than they can afford just because they HAVE to have all the bells and whistles and leather are idiots. If you can afford it then more power to you.
As someone who has been wanting the Australian ute market to finally hit North America, I'm happy about Hyundai success recently. And the mid-sized truck category was started by the Dodge Dakota...and not the Toy.

Also he said it had double mufflers added back to back on each exhaust to make it super quiet
I honestly believe trucks are going through their *supertruck* phase just like how cars went to supercars then hypercars....everybody prepare yourselves for hypertrucks!
A supertruck is from the supertruck programme for there super size A fast truck is a muscle truck The Prime example of a production pick up truck that is a supertruck is the international cxt

My parents and grandparents(RIP) helped me buy a 2010 ford ranger 4x4 brand new with 36km on it. I now have over 230,000 Km and I can say a Pick Up Truck is the best vehicle you can have. I've helped dozens and dozens of people move, never had to worry about "How am I going to get this home", I've gone wheeling many of times and helped recover other vehicles and been stuck in rivers and high centered and still running perfect. As someone that has owned a few trucks and used and abused a few of the old compacts, I’ve found that the new 3/4, 1 ton, and the Ford 1 1/2 ton trucks are more of a status symbol. Go down to the local lakes and RV parks where these trucks have a tendency to live and the parks are full of $50,000 fifth wheels and $60,000+ trucks pulling them. All I need is an old 3/4 4x4 gasser to get the 3 cords of wood I need to the wood furnace and the two or three times I haul cows to town. But I barely managed to afford a 1996 2wd Ranger for my hauling duties because even the old gassers are outrageously priced. Wish an automaker would make an old school 3/4 and 1 ton for people who actually NEED a truck and it be between the 25k-30k mark. No auto locks, manual windows, rubber floors, and a bench seat. Everything you need and nothing you don’t.
Having owned the SVT Lightning, currently owning 2 V8 trucks and having driven the SRT10 Ram, 2nd gen Raptor, and TRX, I understand completely. There's nothing better than pulling up to a light, opening the exhaust cutout, and unleashing hell. I can take my truck deep into my back acreage without a thought and do some mudding. I can outrun some sports cars. I can even create a very expensive burnout (cries in K02).
She's a hoot to drive. We were going to buy a blue one, but the dealership wanted too much of a markup, so my wife got a Laramie instead and maxed it out for comfort. Its like a budget Maybach inside. I kept the other truck and now we have two! :P
Hell, the modern midsize looks bigger or the same than trucks from the early 2000s and below. I see 2001 f150s or older Silverados that look as big as my Tacoma.
Dope vid but You failed to mention the safety of big ol trucks.. Walked away with a sore elbow from the airbag deploying while holding the wheel. I've been in a Tahoe or Silverado ever since.
I live in a farming community. Both my parents have HD diesel trucks, my grandpa has 2 dualy diesel trucks and the diesel Colorado (which is a great truck!) and I have an old 1500. Great video, in 1934 Ford Australia (Ford's Australian branch) produced an Australian Coupe ute (i.e. Pickup Truck), making it officially the first modern ute ever made. This was the result of a 1932 letter from the unnamed wife of a farmer in Australia from Geelong asking for "A vehicle to go to church in on a Sunday and which can carry our pigs to market on Mondays".
What about the Nissan frontier Pro 4X that has been competing in the mid size pick up for years. This truck has had a great share of the market since 2005.
I mean they're quite different cuz trophy Trucks resemble pickups while a super truck is a modified pickup, and trophy trucks kinda have similar suspension system (ifs and axle on the rear) but a trophy truck is just a wide offroad truck with a massive engine and super long travel suspension with a pickup body slapped on top. Also super trucks are less powerful compared to prerunners but they're close to them
I live in Montana and a truck is a necessity and it's versatile like my tundra crewmax I use it to haul tow put a topper on it to camp in and the winters and offroad adventures 4x4 is a must.
12:48 It might be a little unfair to say its the worlds most powerful pickup truck, considering that there's been a lot of 1000+hp pickups over the years. Also considering the cost to purchase a mammoth, I'm fairly confident we could build a much faster truck for a lot less money. (Mind you, it most definitely wouldn't be as fancy)
It's the worlds most powerful "production-ish" truck on the market today. Sure you can custom build trucks to make any power you want but thats not the point.

The clown core performance shout out in this video may be a deep cut for the general audience.
Just to add, I think we may need bass boats with wheels now that I think of it.

Hell, the modern midsize looks bigger or the same than trucks from the early 2000s and below. I see 2001 f150s or older Silverados that look as big as my Tacoma.
Dope vid but You failed to mention the safety of big ol trucks.. I hydroplaned across 6 lanes of traffic in my new 2010 Silverado 1500 at about 40mph, jumped the curb, went through a midsized tree and then a wall right behind that.
Every family in my extended family owns at least 1 truck and 2/3 of them are diesel’s. But they all get used on a regular basis as trucks
"Just because we Americans love trucks, does that mean we really need them?" _Calafornia noises intensify._
Beat me to it, and set it more eloquently than I would have.
I need my truck for landscaping but if I where to leave that line of work and get a desk job I’d probably still drive a truck. Probably an even bigger one. I’m a Floridian.
"California noises"...
I've lived here all my life, and the first sound that popped into my head was the garbled gurgling of a million angry turkeys.
...I have a 12 valve, which I bought to deliver pizza, and now live in. I can't think of a more Cali thing than that. X3
That's not how you spell California, but the same applies in Texas the majority of these People don't even need or use the full functions of a truck and use it as a Status symbol look at me deal .
@@Gcanno I think the higher trims are for status sometimes but some people just like pickups. Some buy them because their families always had them.
"YuH NeVeR KnOWW WHhen YoUu'Ll NeEedd a TrUuUucckK!" - every pavement-pounding trophy truck owner ever.
Because it's always cool to be "that guy" when your friends need to move furniture... Not
Yeah .. and ..
@@doug350zTT the point is that most people don't need them. If you don't need one, then why? When did a pick-up truck become a status symbol?
@@yeanah2571 because I carried a condom all through high school and was still a Virgin till jr of college .. I don’t have to use my bed every day or tow every day to feel elite enough to own a pickup .. but carrying my bike and my Home Depot runs make it worth while
@@yeanah2571 any home owner or parent can find use for a truck .. truck is an open bed SUV
I feel like the “shake it like a guitar with a pick stuck inside of it” joke was severely overlooked
The best part of an amazing song 0:55
Great video, in 1934 Ford Australia (Ford's Australian branch) produced an Australian Coupe ute (i.e. Pickup Truck), making it officially the first modern ute ever made. This was the result of a 1932 letter from the unnamed wife of a farmer in Australia from Geelong asking for "A vehicle to go to church in on a Sunday and which can carry our pigs to market on Mondays".
I love Nolan even more after that ClownCore reference.
Tears of Nolan
Jeremiah wearing an Fi t shirt was so wholesome to me for some reason. Also a snowmobiles need to chill episode of the D list would be great.
What about the Nissan frontier Pro 4X that has been competing in the mid size pick up for years. This truck has had a great share of the market since 2005.
🤫 we want to keep them cheap
Super trucks: "I'm taking the pickup idea to the extreme"
Trophy Trucks: "hold my beer"
But aren't super trucks just street legal trophy trucks? Aside from Prerunners ofc
I had no idea the Santa Cruz was actually selling well. That’s dope
Right? Kinda makes me feel good lol. Maybe we’ll start having those performance Utes like down under
It's a car not a truck
12:48 It might be a little unfair to say its the worlds most powerful pickup truck, considering that there's been a lot of 1000+hp pickups over the years. Also considering the cost to purchase a mammoth, I'm fairly confident we could build a much faster truck for a lot less money. (Mind you, it most definitely wouldn't be as fancy)
It's the worlds most powerful "production-ish" truck on the market today. Sure you can custom build trucks to make any power you want but thats not the point.
Technically for the US market the Subaru baja was the first compact/city truck
hahaha what... There was compact trucks before 2003....
What about the Subaru Brat. That was around long before the Baja
Are we gonna forget about the Brat?
What about a Ford Ranchero, Chevy El Camino and a Subaru Brat? Those came years before the Baja.
@@Joetwebb The Baja and Brat are cars.. Not trucks..
in Australia Ute's are sacrilegious especially because almost everyone either works in the mines or a tradie and its amazing, we even get big wagon 4x4's like landcruisers and cop them into dual cabs at this point
nollie it takes huge balls to tell north america that don’t really need pickups (and suvs tbh) thanks my guy
Dude got me with keep shaking it like a guitar with a pick stuck in it I'm dead 😂
The current body style Colorado has been out since 2014 thus beating the ranger
06:57 : what da rims doin?
The ranger never disappeared it has been one of the top sellers in Australia for ages
I have a '93 GMC Sierra K1500, it's my first car and my daily, but I also bought it as a farm vehicle since I'm a farmer and I needed a tough and reliable truck to get things done, I find it sad that a lot of people who buy trucks now do it for the clout and not work or off roading
6:57 Most types of trucks I'm fine with. The only one I'm not is some compact ones. The cab to bed length ratio ( long cab, short box) is off putting to me
that’s the same issue I have with a lot of the trucks out today. they just look weird. how are you gonna have a crew cab truck with a 6’ bed? shit just looks weird.
@@8.21productions9 I own a crew cab with a 6’ bed. It looks alright to me, but I’ll probably go for a single or extended cab for my next truck, just don’t need the extra space of a crew.
The 5 ft bed on a 4 door taco looks even stubbier
For all these "studies" that are always conducted, I have never been asked and I don't know anyone that has. At my work 90% of the people own trucks and everyone has something in the bed at least every week.
I was hoping the sponsor would be Omaze with a chance to win that Mammoth 1000. 🥺
Great video. The 16mins felt like 2. Thanks Nolan.
Up in Humboldt County we had a lot of Grow Dozers, usually a massively lifted Tundra or Rams, driven by dudes with flat brim hats and board shorts.
