@@cenciende9401 In the USA, we have laws governing price gouging or when a seller takes advantage of a situation to raise prices beyond what is considered fair and reasonable. It is encouraged that, in certain situations, like excessively high dealer markups, that you report that dealer to the local state's Consumer Protection Agency. Here in my state, the Attorney General's Office investigates these reports. You can also report price gouging to the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) Bureau of Consumer Protection, although they are Federal so not really tasked with issues a state can handle.
@Matthew Bauer the thing is the car dealerships in various states have successfully lobbied against their business being applicable to anti-price gouging laws. States also refuse to go after dealerships because of the state taxes they get from car sales. So the higher the car's price, the higher the sales tax. You can complain to your local state about a store selling the $0.99 cans of Arizona iced tea for $5 and it would count as price gouging, but you can't do that with dealerships.

I LOVE this colab, my two favorite car youtubers! Idea for this game though (which I love). Price of right rules are BS. I would suggest calculating the difference from the actual value as a "total dollar amount off" score.
Dealers are getting away with this because people flush with cash seem to think it's a badge of honor to buy something thousands over MSRP. Careless spending has become the new way to flaunt wealth.
It's always been the case. But usually they just buy inherently more expensive vehicles to show the excessive unnecessary spending.. not wilfully get scammed and then brag about it, as they do now. In short yeah, you're right.

But given that it really is a serious topic. Keeping the focus on it, by not using a gameshow format in the first place, would imo be more effective. Thinking about things, perhaps this should have been done in a two part format. One part as it was done here, with the game show. Then another focused on the events in the real world. Delivered with the snark common to Donut videos. Maybe there is a disconnect here worthy of note though: These are car people talking about cars. Our dealership refuses to price gouge, even though almost everyone else around us is. A lot of the issue here is other dealers are having issues getting vehicles, so they mark their current ones up to keep their profits close to the same.

Mazda dealerships are the only ones not marking up in my area, don’t know if that means they’re hurting for sales, just moving a lot of inventory while also gaining goodwill or if corporate is keeping them in check.
I work for Mazda, it's mostly just the culture within the dealership networks that encourage taking care of the customer from day one. We are one of the smallest manufacturers in the world and cannot afford to swindle the Goodwill of the customer base we've taken decades to cultivate, to make some quick bucks now. We are struggling to sell cars because we are struggling to even get any from overseas. Even then we will not take advantage of the people buying cars now!
I am a Mazda sales representative and we do not believe that is a good business practice for earning your business in the long run. People get all upset at the dealers for charging these prices but you 100% have to be angry at the people buying them as well. If people weren’t willing to pay for them they wouldn’t sell them. This has always been the case. Supply and demand leads the way. People go nuts on exclusivity and are happy to pay for it. Also I feel really sorry for these people paying these inflated prices because they are going to be stuck with the payment on a vehicle worth a fraction of what they paid when this bubble pops.
No point getting angry at stupid. If someone is dumb enough to pay 3X sticker price for an exponentially depreciating asset, then I say let them burn their money. Who we all should be mad at is the FED, for printing trillions of dollars we didn't need and causing inflation to rise to the levels not seen since the 70's and 80's.

It's the same on the bottom end with labor too. Consumers blindly pay the least amount of money for products even if it means buying from companies who exploit their workers to no end, and some even try to justify not tipping service industry workers when they aren't willing to support ethical businesses that paid fair wages, when their consumers choices drove ethics out of any businesses. This is what happens when people want to take advantage of capitalism for their own gains but want none of the responsibilities on either side. The people that need these cars the most are the ones that need to commute to their exploitative workplaces, while the wealthier work from home folks are comfortably paying the inflated prices for a toy.

It's nice to see car manufacturers cracking down on price gouging at dealerships. Unfortunately, it only affects the new inventory and not the used inventory. Dealerships are marking up used cars just as bad if not worse.
All i've heard for the last 2 years is "Dealerships cant get cars" "The lots are empty". But never once did I see an "Empty" dealeship. They have been and continue to be packed with PLENTY of cars.
True, in my country there was so much demand that they had to use a port in the south to unload cars since the normally used were collapased, the shortage is fake news
Since when? Dealerships have always been a shady business. The more wealthy the dealership is, the more they screw over their customers. Look at Audi dealerships. Charging $200 just for a diagnosis of a problem.
I agree with you. It’s shameless, bold-faced greed. And the dealerships act as if they’re ENTITLED to that kind of money for the cars. When I point out that my older cars have better materials and design and gas-mileage, they have no response. So, a worse car with a higher sticker-price…this is opposite of value when I get more and pay less than what it’s worth. Conclusion: I’m holding on to my cars, treating them as my last cars for this lifetime, and investing the money in myself through vacations and with dinners and in stocks of company that return more dollars to me for the ones I send them. In other words, I won’t reward a slithering, slimy, greedy person. They’ll have to wait for a fool to do this. And , news flash: the reason the prices are so high is that are enough fools who will pay that price.
It's a very emotional issue. Dealership greed is subjective. What is anything really worth? As much as someone is willing to pay for it. When the supply curve meets the demand curve - THAT'S the price. It sucks but if nitwits are willing to pay for it the dealership has no incentive to lower price

It isnt the "good fight" its supply and demand, why not demand the manufactures just make more cars to level out supply? If you want dealers to sell at no markup when there is no inventory, youll have the same situation you have with PS5's and Graphics cards. Scalpers/Investors buying all the cars then reselling them at insane prices themselves. It sucks but this is what happens when you shut down the economy and production for a year.

Well, car manufacturer always jacking up the price regardless on what condition we have right now. More premium brand will be another tax included and you wont get premium cars unless you are either very rich or having successful career to buying it.

@@nickpurdy69 Personally I think that kind of stuff is better when it is more focused on the topic, regardless if it is delivered in a funny or serious manner.
*Why* dealerships are doing what they are doing, or at least why they think they are doing it, is certainly worthy of exploration.
The Price Is Right works as a game show as well as it does, because it is everyday people rather than people who have (at least somewhat) detailed knowledge about what they are bidding on. But at the same time, I can see why someone could argue that this makes it even better here.
Regardless, on the objective side of things, calling out the dealerships until they stop doing this BS is what is really important. One way or another.

I live near Bloomington IL where Rivians are made. It use to be a different plant and they changed the road name to rivian motorway and everything. Plenty of regular people over here have the R1T. My neighbor is the guy over the only certified auto body shop allowed to work on them too so good luck to anybody who lives in Nebraska and hits a deer or something.
I think that’s why they are keeping things local, because the resources for the things are local as well
Best episode yet, these two collabing is hilarious. I hope this is done again.
I Love that you guys continue to cover this serious issue we as car buyers are facing. Thanks for fighting the good fight and please continue to cover this topic until the market changes.
Worst part about the maverick is people get them with the intent to sell them 10k above msrp while people who have had them ordered for over a year and plan on actually keeping them haven’t heard a thing on their orders.
Seems like a stupid plan to earn only $10,000 if you're lucky, before the government taxes you on sales tax. Not worthwhile.
this collab makes me so happy
I love this collab. I would really like to see more of these two working channels working together.
I friggin' love these price guess games with James and Jeremiah!
Saw this collaboration coming a mile away. The Throttle House guys have been in California too much lately not to do it. This channel, Throttle House, and Hoonigan are the car guy trifecta.
BTW, Pumphrey, it’s pronounced, “AND I’m James.”
2:05 ok Charlie. WILDCARD BABY!
That's just nuts. Gotta combat these crazy prices by not paying it!
Same. I was in the market for a new car and I just said F it. I'm all for paying a fair price, but I'm not paying almost double simply because the dealers are greedy pricks. It sucks for the manufactures however, because I'm now out of the market thanks to the price gouging. I wish you could walk into the manufacture and purchase direct from them.
@@DickGazInYa Luckily there’s a few decent dealers out there still. MSRP on my Jeep in November was like 45k and a bunch of dealers had them at 43k. The one I got mine from sold me mine for 39k but yeah I got lucky lol.
@@TonyTheTruckGuy Does it come with leather seats and a v8? Lol
@@kensmechanicalaffair Mine’s just V6 with suede/leather combo seats. Not a fan of leather unless they’re heated AND cooled lol. Also came from a hemi Ram so I wanted a bit better mpg.
@@TonyTheTruckGuy I see.
watching my two favorite RUclips car show personalities together was a gift. You guys' rock
"Technically we all lose. No one wins here. I told you. You're gonna walk away being like that was terrible." Absolute facts and real pain in this economy lmaoooo
Good to see the dealership im working at isnt price gauging customer and selling our lexus cars at msrp.
I love that the guys are finally actually playing the price is right rules strategically! But it does demonstrate the flaw in the ruleset that the game essentially becomes guessing if the price is simply higher or lower than the previous guess. I propose that you guys should add a rule where if the guesser comes within a certain range of the correct answer (say $5,000), then they get a bonus point! That will encourage the contestants to try to guess close to the actual price still.
What problem would just not doing the price is right rules create?
@@yooyo8303 I guess that's another option too! Idk I'm just kinda biased towards liking the price is right rules 😅
Why not just have them write the guess down and not share it before it is revealed? Completely eliminates the bid $1 more thing.
@@atw9913 That's what I was gonna say. Make it like final Jeopardy and problem solved
What if I told you the whole game was guessing, and none of it mattered?
Seems more and more that a "afforable" eletric car is just a myth of legends.
Honestly
only electric car brands that don't use dealerships
I love the collabs you guys are doing. Those dealer mark ups are wildin!
My 2 favourite car channels combined! It's like Dragon Ball when Vegeta combined with Goku.
I just purchased a 22’ Z71 Tahoe (ordered in Nov got it in April) the dealer was amazing $2k below MSRP. No price gouging on the extended warranty. My point… not all of dealerships out there are crooks. Thanks for the content. love the channel.
I absolutely love watching this channel and these challenges lol I flip out just as much and at the same time as them
1:51LOL thats some sweet edit. Seems legit🤣
I’m subscribed to both of these channels and never miss a video from both of them.
Imagine paying $94,000 for a Rav4 lol
50K for a Rav4 is stupid
and 285k for a GM product.
Right?? I didn’t even pay that much for my AMG right off the boat.
Just buy a 4Runner, we paid “only” 50k for ours.
I don't have to imagine
Everything automotive is nuts now. I wish I bought aftermarket parts when I got my FiST a few years back
This was hella fun to watch, and after seeing the prices, it was hella depressing too! Great collaboration.
I was in the market for an STI and I went to a dealer and saw that they had a 2021 for $58,000 and I was flabbergasted. I told them that this vehicle new, the previous year, was only $50,000. I went home and looked online for STIs and found that they were all in the high $50s to $60s thousand range... They shot up higher than MSRP
