portal of 1 and citadel..... citadel being the better of the two IMO but I've left the metal community in search for classical music and a more emotionally charged, "peaceful" style of play
Saw them live a few weeks ago I kinda want them to stay a hidden gem but they deserved the world . Amazing band Portal of I is very good as well more songs
+mujmujmuj They are totally different than Opeth that's the thing they are unique to themselves. Prog Metal Is one of the best things since the invention of the wheel.
Death, slam, brutal, black, deathcore... Will there be any room for traditional heavy metal in the future? Or is it dying/not trv enough? happy to see bands like Haken, Ne Obliviscaris, Gojira and Mastodon on the list.
Traditional heavy metal has done everything in its borders and more. It's very hard to do anything with the subgenre anymore without sounding like a fifth-rate version of a much better band. We've got plenty of good material there already, it's time for other subgenres to take center stage. And honestly they already have.
And bands that sound like fifth rate copy version of much better band would sound like that even if they were playing slamming brutal blackened death metal. There is need for creativity.
Of course there's a need for creativity. But when a subgenre has been explored constantly and isn't as massive as it used to be, there's usually a good reason. There's plenty of really dumb "slamming brutal death metal" (I don't think adding black metal into slam would be that good) bands that just rip off Devourment. But then there are bands like Wormed or Rings of Saturn that just go out the fucking window.
I think heavy metal is a bit done. It doesn't push boundaries, It doesn't feel fresh (it's an old sound) and it requires a lot of knowledge of structures, buildups, atmosphere, etc, which being just heavy metal means you're limited. I do like heavy metal though
Thanks for making this list man, i'm hoping to play bass in a band that spearheads the next generation of heavy metal in a couple years and seeing a list that incorporated more modern bands gave me some helpful insight. Keep making videos dude!
metal archives may not consider them metal, but agree they will be a huge influence. They remind me of a less humorous Mr Bungle or a less sappy Dream Theater
I think that Revocation is one of the few bands that really breaking boundaries of modern metal. The ability of Dave Davidson to incorporate technical death metal and jazz is just fenomenal. Those guys deserve more attention.
I'm glad you put Halen on there, just got into them recently and they truly are something special. I think High on Fire should've been on there, but that's just me.
i agree with nails changing things up, they don't do anything very complicated but the sound they get is really easy to get into and just general all round fun along with infant annihilator, fun metal is the best
Yesss... Mastodon! I knew it! And Ne Obliviscaris is just pure eargasm aswell, they're one of the bands that got me so addicted to Melodic Death Metal. God damnit, this made me so excited for their new album, and of course Mastodon's possibly double album.
I feel Alter Bridge and Five Finger Death Punch could have been on here. They may not be as groundbreaking as some of the ones you mention in the video, but they'll sure as hell influence some bands of the future.
I was waiting for cattle decap! Travis' clean melodic vocals on their last 2 albums is crazy. The ability to go from chaotic death grind and be able to make that genre have some of the most melodic parts in music is unheard of besides them! Once people start being able to do Travis' clean vocals there's gonna be a new vocal style seen frequently in metal
Great list. I even got a few band names to check out. Thanks. Personally I would add Rings of Saturn and Black Tongue. They both are controversial bands among metalheads for the reason that their sounds are way out of the ordinary. Their music is unique and could possibly spawn a new form of metalhead or sub genre. Thank you
Intronaut...has really impressed me and even though it's a local band here in Utah, Subrosa. Subrose is a doom metal band..however what the group does with processed violins is astonishing. The band's music was also recently featured in a t.v. series. on CBS.
Ryan Schmidt you should if you like BTBAM. Painted in Exile released an EP 7 years ago; however their debut album per a Crowd Funding campaign is finally coming out in the coming months.
+coverkillernation one of the top three bands should have been Disturbed. Formed in 2000 hands down the most influential modern metal band in the mainstream. And they've shown with a mortal eyes they can experiment with their formula and still be just as big. Last time I checked Disturbed album sales that surpassed 55 million Which is far more than most metal bands. And Disturbed has been around for 16 years and still going strong. Also a very influential band among the Christian metal community hands down and big even in the mainstream metal now. Demon Hunter they have shown they can rival the best heavy metal ore metalcore band. With albums like storm the gates of hell the triptych Summer of Darkness. End of younger bands with veterans I see still great influence for the band ashes of Ares. Or how about epica wintersun just as some examples. But hands down Disturbed is one of the most important current-day metal bands.
While there's a great deal of exceptional new bands coming on the horizon, being the prime influence of the next generation, I think it's also important to note recently, up and coming solo musicians. One that comes to mind is one that's a huge influence to me in fact, Plini. Plini's first three EPs, have all gotten stellar reviews, and rightfully so. Even Steve Vai has aknowledged him for being one of the musicians of this generation, that made him feel that the future of exceptional guitar playing was secure. It's also important to say that, with the rise in other succesful solo musicians, and with the advancement of technology,(that I count myself lucky to have grown up in) it has made things much easier for amatur musicians to record their own music, without having to even have other musicians, a recording studio, etc. So, I guess you could say that all these solo musicians doing their own thing, and generating a fanbase, could count as something to influence the next generation do things on their own, I suppose :p
I'm so happy to see infant annihilator on this list. They're My favorite band. Dickie has one of the best voices I've heard. I also appreciate how you said cattle decap. Adding melody to grindcore is a beautiful thing to listen to. They're also one of my favorites. Speaking of infant annihilators new vocalist, he reminds me a lot of Travis Ryan of cattle decap
I was really surprised to see Mastodon on this list at all let alone at the top spot. I'm a huge fan of Mastodon and I was super excited to see their name. Coverkiller, in the videos I've watched for the last few months, really seemed to be leaning towards, though not necessarily favoring, more death and black metal as genres in whole.(Which he's allowed to do, it's his channel after all.) I don't have any issue with death or black metal, I'm fan of both, but I don't really consider Mastodon to fall into either the death or black camps. Crack the Skye is on my personal list as one of the best albums of all time, and I feel that they don't get enough recognition, at least among the other metal heads I know. It was very cool, and a little vindicating to see them at the top of this list.
I agree with most of this list, but I have a few that I would have added. These include: Periphery, Animals As Leaders, Between The Buried and Me, Slipknot, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Septicflesh, Carach Angren, and some other that I can't think of off the top of my head.
That's actually a pretty good list, but I would have thought of bands that have appeared from the 2000's onwards such as the Indian Blackened Thrash Metal band Kryptos, Canadian Speed Metal band Striker, Canadian Heavy Metal band Skull Fist, Egyptian Death Metal band Scarab, French Heavy Metal band Hammer King, American Crossover Thrash Metal band Municipal Waste, Swedish Glam Metal band Crazy Lixx, French Glam Metal band Black Rain, Indian Blackened Death Metal band Demonic Resurrection or Canadian Power Metal band Unleash the Archers.
Nice list. Although I'm not a fan of Mastodon's more recent work, I do agree with their number 1 place here. I'd have put Cattle Decapitation somewhere in the list instead of as an honourable mention. I also would have liked to see a band like Dragged Into Sunlight or Indian in there. That's just my opinion.
Good list, I feel there should've been more black metal bands on the list - BM seems to me the most vibrant metal genre nowadays. Actually, I am waiting for a new wave of metal bands that would create a whole new genre - similar to the thrash wave in the 80s, death metal late 80s/early 90s, metalcore in the early 2000s and so on.
Personally I think bands like Twelve Foot Ninja, Black Crown Initiate, Allegaeon, Destiny Potato, Jinjer, Native Construct, Cyborg Octopus, Periphery, and many others are going to influence the next generation.
Revocation, Allegaeon, or Obscura? Everytime I listen to those bands it ends up making me want to play guitar. Nice to see Vektor making the list probably my favorite album that came out this year so far.
I quite agree with this list. Above all, Mastodon and next Gojira, Haken, Ghost and why not, Babymetal. Another honorable mention I would also include is definitely Dragonforce. I guess Opeth is out of the question just because they have been influential in many groups for a long time!
Check out earthside. They should be on this list. The perfect mix between Opeth and Steve Wilson with bits of symphonic metal added too. Also, pregnant whale pain, a mix of heavy grunge and metal.
How about Motionless in White. I know that not everyone in the metal community cares for metalcore, and I'm not biased towards the group, but to say they won't have an impact is simply untrue.
Do you think that it's possible that in the future we might hear bands that echo some older artists? I'm talking about a bit more modern Judas Priest, mixed with a bit of Metallica. Or even Dokken which borrows from 90's Megadeth or Extreme etc.
I can see blackgaze becoming bigger, Alcest's latest album was probably my favourite album of 2016 behind Terminal Redux. But what would you consider a band like Astronoid? I recommend you guys listen to their album "Air" its real good.
Fallujah, The Faceless, Infant Annihilator, Nails, Beyond Creation, Archspire, The Black Dahlia Murder, Slaughter To Previal, Whitechapel, and Mastodon are the ten metal bands that I think will fuel the next generation of metal bands.
+Manic Maniac thanks for your opinions about MY LIST, now you can take your opinion about mine and shove it up your ass. Why don't you post your own list and everyone else can disagree with you.
I have fallen out of touch with metal music I need to check all of these out and other videos you have for recommendations, anyone else got any great must listen metal bands I should check out?
randumo24 yeah, no... I tried and I seriously cannot on board with that sound. I get why others like it, but noooo for me, who knows my opinion may change in the future ***** I'll check em out m8
TundraL5Z No no! The whole point of that list was that it would trigger more and more people the further down it went. You can tell which ones are supposed to be b8 (pretty much BVB on down, although Babymetal is a toss- up which is why they're in the middle). Periphery is legit for me
10. Children of Bodom 9. Five Finger Death Punch 8. Babymetal 7. Ghost 6. Havok 5. Lamb of God 4. Evanescence 3. Municipal Waste 2. Behemoth 1. Avenged Sevenfold
intronaut making all sorts of moves in the progressive sludge direction, more so than mastodon ever did imo also i wish people would mention Les Discrets when they mention Alcest pretty fair list though I guess
Periphery and Animals as Leaders should be on here, both of their debut albums were groundbreakers for their genre. Their influence is already happening, as young bands today are already citing them as influences.
Bring Me The Horizon, Vesta Collide, Capture The Crown, Bad Omens, Kamelot, Arch Enemy and Architects will definitely be influential to us younger people.
Manic Maniac They're an innovative German Post-Metal band, who showcase a lot of symbolism and metaphors in their songwriting. They have 6 albums and all of them are companion pieces. For example, the instrumentation on their most recent record "Pelagial" (released in 2013) explores the depth zones of the ocean in descending order, while the lyrics describe an introspective journey into the depths of the mind towards The Origin Of Desires. This concept though is a companion to their third album "Precambrian" (released in 2007), wherein the instrumentation explores the formation of the Earth and geological eras while the lyrics discuss The Origin Of Products and how things are made.
Somehow I clicked cancel instead of post comment. Is it notable though? The point of this video was to make a list of bands that will likely have an everlasting impact on metal. As someone who listens to a lot of music, I find it hard to believe an important band slipped under my radar, even for a genre I'm not very into.
Manic Maniac The Ocean have a few masterpieces in their discography so far and they're among the best in their genre, so I'm sure they'll be an influence in their genre (Post-Metal/Prog Metal).
Please do a video of the 10 new non metal bands more influential to metal, for example in the past Pink Floyd or the Ramones were very influential, or Black Flag, or Swans, well there's a lot...Fields of Nephelim, Public Enemy, I can go on an on
if you like deafheaven, try altar of plagues, by far the best post black metal band and would be on this list if they were American. (by that I mean they'd have been promoted better)
Your list is pretty spot on!
I especially agree on Ghost, Gojira, Infant Annihilator and BABYMETAL :)
Those kawaii beatdowns tho \m/
+Elisile \v/
Babymetal is just J-pop disguised as "Metal" under Heavy riffing and Distorted Guitars.
Yo I'm glad Ne Obliviscaris made it, I've been listening to Citadel a lot recently and I can see the uniqueness in their sound
portal of 1 and citadel.....
citadel being the better of the two IMO
but I've left the metal community in search for classical music and a more emotionally charged, "peaceful" style of play
Saw them live a few weeks ago I kinda want them to stay a hidden gem but they deserved the world .
Amazing band Portal of I is very good as well more songs
Portal of I is immense. Blew my mind. I feel like they are the first band that really took heavy influence from Opeth in a way i wish more bands did.
+mujmujmuj They are totally different than Opeth that's the thing they are unique to themselves.
Prog Metal Is one of the best things since the invention of the wheel.
I think Portal of I and My arms your hearse have very clear similarities. But i love both soo w/e.
Yes! Infant Annihilator!
well there new album got sorta big and is almost a masterpiece of tech deathcore
yea exactly
That title for a band is so fucking try hard.
Death, slam, brutal, black, deathcore...
Will there be any room for traditional heavy metal in the future? Or is it dying/not trv enough?
happy to see bands like Haken, Ne Obliviscaris, Gojira and Mastodon on the list.

We've got plenty of good material there already, it's time for other subgenres to take center stage. And honestly they already have.
+The Abyssal Archivist
I think there's plenty more things to do with the subgenre.
As soon as I see the video title, I expected Mastodon to be up there. Awesome list CKN, that was a good idea!
Thanks for making this list man, i'm hoping to play bass in a band that spearheads the next generation of heavy metal in a couple years and seeing a list that incorporated more modern bands gave me some helpful insight. Keep making videos dude!
As usual, I'm getting an education! Thx CKN, you continue to be an excellent resource.
Thank you for mentioning Cattle Decapitation! Became one of my favorite bands very quickly!
His list:
10. Vektor
9. Haken
8. Ghost
7. Ne Obliscarus
6. Infant Annihilator
5. The Faceless
4. Gojira
3. Deafheaven
2. Alcest
Honorable Mentions:
Leviathan, Baby Metal, Cattle Decapitation
1. Mastodon
Very good list but I think BTBAM and Revocation would be a nice addition to that list as well
btbam most definitely
+metalmanny666 definitely not, yuck!
Baroness has some really good staff as well.
Mastodon's early stuff still feel so fresh.
BTBAM. Paul Waggoner is the reason on why I picked up guitar. Colors is a masterpiece.
Hell to the fuck yeah
+metalmanny666 BTBAM?
+Noah Faber Between The Buried And Me
You say that like it's a bad thing.
metal archives may not consider them metal, but agree they will be a huge influence. They remind me of a less humorous Mr Bungle or a less sappy Dream Theater
great video man, really enjoyed these thoughts
I was really expecting Mastodon to be #1, cool video!
thanks for the list, gonna check all these bands out!
Thank you for getting me into all these amazing bands
I think that Revocation is one of the few bands that really breaking boundaries of modern metal. The ability of Dave Davidson to incorporate technical death metal and jazz is just fenomenal. Those guys deserve more attention.
I'm glad you put Halen on there, just got into them recently and they truly are something special. I think High on Fire should've been on there, but that's just me.
behemoth
periphery
ghost
animal as leaders
nails
revocation
between the buried and me
amon amarth
Good list
Behemoth and Amon Amarth are way too old.
i agree with nails changing things up, they don't do anything very complicated but the sound they get is really easy to get into and just general all round fun along with infant annihilator, fun metal is the best
If Periphery and AAL are there, don't go forgetting Sikth.
Solid list
Yesss... Mastodon! I knew it! And Ne Obliviscaris is just pure eargasm aswell, they're one of the bands that got me so addicted to Melodic Death Metal. God damnit, this made me so excited for their new album, and of course Mastodon's possibly double album.

Minus leviathan, this is exactly the list I would give. Good list, sir
great list CKN! i need to check out haken now
Their shit's on Spotify.
metalmanny666
thanks for the head's up!
+alexnatoe The catalogue for Iced Earth is huge too.
I was waiting for cattle decap! Travis' clean melodic vocals on their last 2 albums is crazy. Alcest is a really good point. Didn't think of them, but certainly interesting and influential
very cool...I need to check a few of these bands out. :)
i agree with a lot of the comments about BTBAM. Also I would've picked Obscura over The Faceless. Great Video!
I kind of expected Between the Buried and Me on here. But I suppose it's hard to sound even a little bit like them.
Yeah that's true
have you heard Painted in Exile? Protest the Hero? Native Construct?
+allmediareviews.blogspot.com I love Protest. They sound similar but defiantly have their own sound. I'll have to check out painted in exile.
Ryan Schmidt you should if you like BTBAM. Painted in Exile released an EP 7 years ago; however their debut album per a Crowd Funding campaign is finally coming out in the coming months.
I totally agree with Mastodon but it would've been cool to see Pestilence
The list mentions that the band's first album needed to come out after 2000. Pestilence had their first album emerge in 1988.
+coverkillernation one of the top three bands should have been Disturbed. Formed in 2000 hands down the most influential modern metal band in the mainstream. +gokusondbz with immortalized
lol, dude get a grip...
+coverkillernation
Sorry skipped the intro
Black Fast. Havok. nice work as always!

I reckon Periphery are up there
Couldn't agree more with Alcest! I'm really looking forward to their new release Kodama
I've never heard of any of these bands and I've listen to metal my whole life
I'm so happy to see infant annihilator on this list.
Budding mullet there. Keep growing.
Totally agreed for Mastodon . On spot man ..
what was the name of the faceless album being talked about ? wasn't audible to me
I was really surprised to see Mastodon on this list at all let alone at the top spot. It was very cool, and a little vindicating to see them at the top of this list.

children of bodom is the reason I picked up the guitar in the first place. also probably one of the best live shows I have ever seen
100% agree with Mastodon, though I would've liked to have seen Revocation on this list somewhere
What about The Angelic Process? Their sound is so uniquely apocalyptic. Not active anymore, unfortunately, but their uniqueness stays there
I have started a band with my friends a year ago our (modern) influences are: Mastodon, Gojira, Deafheaven,Vektor and Ghost
As an aspiring metal musician, between the buried and me would rank pretty high on my list
Yo I came into this list hoping to see Gojira and Mastodon. I wasn't disappointed.
Ghost, Infant Annihilator and Cattle Decapitation. Fuck yeah
Number one on my list is Panopticon. Black metal mixed with folk metal but especially the use of audio clips.
Check out earthside. They should be on this list. The perfect mix between Opeth and Steve Wilson with bits of symphonic metal added too.
Also, pregnant whale pain, a mix of heavy grunge and metal.
Gojira. Hands down greatest band out there right now
Trivium, The Agonist, Kalmah, The Black Dahlia Murder, Amaranthe, Killswitch Engage, The Sword, Epica, Machinae Supremacy.
Kalmah..Fuck yeah
If those are influential then the next 10 years will suck
Avenged Sevenfold....
There are much better bands, these are only the ones that are more popular and mainstream... That doesn't mean they fit the list
Trivium fuck yeah.
Way to put on the faceless man. In solitude is an incredible song. You can really hear the dirge of November influence in it
Between the Buried and Me, Periphery, and The Dillinger Escape plan are the main three bands I'm influenced by
Plz review starset p.s amazing content keep it up
How about Motionless in White. I know that not everyone in the metal community cares for metalcore, and I'm not biased towards the group, but to say they won't have an impact is simply untrue.
Dan Ross they have too many styles to just be called metalcore.
That's metalcore. Not metal. It will influence the generation, as it already has. But its not a metal band
Nu Metalcore
Others Wage War,Northlane and Fever 333
Can you do a video on the new Equilibrium album?
Between the Buried and Me has been one of the larger names of the past decade or so.
fuck yeah!
+metalmanny666 fuck no!
I would have thrown Witherscape in there at some point, but in general a rather sharp list.
Totally agree with Haken. saw them at ProgPower a couple years ago with Forbidden and Labyrinth. Fucking amazing.
I had a sneaky suspicion that Babymetal would pop up here ;) It's also good to see that so many of the comments support them.
What do you think about Revocation
Fallujah, The Faceless, Infant Annihilator, Nails, Beyond Creation, Archspire, The Black Dahlia Murder, Slaughter To Previal, Whitechapel, and Mastodon are the ten metal bands that I think will fuel the next generation of metal bands.
My list...
Pallbearer
Tribulation
Periphery
Vektor
Full of Hell
Cattle Decapitation
Defheaven
Sylosis
Born of Osiris
Yob
Ghost
+Manic Maniac dude it was just his opinion, chill out

+Manic Maniac well clearly they influenced you to respond to my comment
Solid list
if you dont want people to have an opinion dont post a comment...
I have fallen out of touch with metal music I need to check all of these out and other videos you have for recommendations, anyone else got any great must listen metal bands I should check out?
Babymetal :)
randumo24 yeah, no... I tried and I seriously cannot on board with that sound. I get why others like it, but noooo for me, who knows my opinion may change in the future ***** I'll check em out m8

4. Evanescence
3. Pierce the Veil
2. Skrillex
1. Attila

Aww youre saying Periphery sucks, boo :(
TundraL5Z No no! The whole point of that list was that it would trigger more and more people the further down it went. You can tell which ones are supposed to be b8 (pretty much BVB on down, although Babymetal is a toss- up which is why they're in the middle). Periphery is legit for me
Elisile Ok haha i got a little scared, i do agree with the list as it gets lower 100%
Skrillex😂
That list is nasty lol, except LoG they rule
I would have put Zardonic, Fail Emotions, and Blood Stain Child in the honourable mentions at least.
True
Zardonic kicks freakin ass
Electronic AIDS
Agreed :)
10. Children of Bodom

intronaut making all sorts of moves in the progressive sludge direction, more so than mastodon ever did imo
also i wish people would mention Les Discrets when they mention Alcest
pretty fair list though I guess
Ne Obliviscaris was a pleasant surprise to me
Periphery and Animals as Leaders should be on here, both of their debut albums were groundbreakers for their genre. Their influence is already happening, as young bands today are already citing them as influences.
Bring Me The Horizon, Vesta Collide, Capture The Crown, Bad Omens, Kamelot, Arch Enemy and Architects will definitely be influential to us younger people.
5: Scale the Summit
4: August Burns Red
3: Periphery
2: Jason Richardson
1:Animals as Leaders
Machine head, Gojira (my favorite), Meshuggah, mastadon, killswitch engage, Opeth
See now. *This* is what I want to hear about.
Mostly agree with this list, Gojira, Ghost, Haken and Mastodon would definitely be on mine too.
I think Tribulation and Horrendous are going to be big influences in the future
Sylosis will definitely be one that will influence future generations
Mark my words, Bleeding Through, Slaves B.C., Lamb of God, Deafheaven and Beartooth will be some of the main influences in the next generations
There are metal groups in Africa and other parts of the world. They need to find their voice and we need to support that.
to me, trivium was my gate way to start playing
Saw Mastodon last night in Belfast !!!!! \m/
I listen to like 6 of these bands when trying to write so this is pretty accurate haha
- The Ocean Collective
- Kvelertak
- Mastodon
- Between The Buried And Me
- TesseracT
- The Sword
- Ghost
- Babymetal
- Deafheaven
- Alcest
I never heard of the Ocean Collective. Isn't even notable enough to leave a big impact on metal?
Manic Maniac
They're an innovative German Post-Metal band, who showcase a lot of symbolism and metaphors in their songwriting.
Kyle Benson
I didn't include them because I don't listen to them.
Somehow I clicked cancel instead of post comment. Is it notable though? The point of this video was to make a list of bands that will likely have an everlasting impact on metal. As someone who listens to a lot of music, I find it hard to believe an important band slipped under my radar, even for a genre I'm not very into.
Manic Maniac
The Ocean have a few masterpieces in their discography so far and they're among the best in their genre, so I'm sure they'll be an influence in their genre (Post-Metal/Prog Metal).
I would say Fallujah could become highly influential. They're atmosphere and sound are almost one of a kind. To me, at least
Please do a video of the 10 new non metal bands more influential to metal, for example in the past Pink Floyd or the Ramones were very influential, or Black Flag, or Swans, well there's a lot...Fields of Nephelim, Public Enemy, I can go on an on
I was hoping to see Native Construct on this list.
probably too new, but an HM might have made sense.
I think Evile should've been here somewhere. Awesome band.
Where is AAL?
if you like deafheaven, try altar of plagues, by far the best post black metal band and would be on this list if they were American. (by that I mean they'd have been promoted better)
