In college back in the late 60's I read an article by the Buckminster Fuller Institute on the math involved with building a dome building. I think it was at the Worlds Fair in Montreal, Canada. I drew up plans for a 36 foot diameter home with a half upper deck. Got drafted and my world changed. I've seen a couple that had "Shotcrete" (sprayed concrete) with four foot tall, cinder block base walls, then covered with soil and grass ... they were amazing.
Regarding heat in a geodesic dome: A geodesic dome's shape creates a natural air flow that distributes the heat evenly throughout the entire dome: At the rim of the dome - air is cooled at the inner surface, so it falls towards the floor *at* those surfaces. Meanwhile: Hotter air at floor rises towards the highest point of the dome (the top center). If you want ventilation: Open the dome's ventilation hatches at the top of the domes - and - open hatches at *floor level* - and a convection air flow starts - no AC needed.
I think the owner chose the geodesic dome as a way to stand out from other BnB offers. However, it's important to keep in mind that this is still a fabric-covered shelter; so its durability, thermal and noise performance can't be compared with conventional homes but with other lightweight shelters like yurts or tents. Modern geodesic homes have solved most of the shortcomings of the basic design, so it might be worthy to visit an actual home to see how it compares with conventional domestic buildings.
@@Sam-I-Am-Sam hi! We are in the UK so normally need full planning permission even though they are classed as temporary structures. We got change of use to a fixed tent camp site for ours. Thanks, Vicki
Thanks for the thorough review. My kids saw these and we are looking into trying one of these - even if it's just for the novelty factor of staying in something dome shaped
Hi, you have booked a dome which is not fully function. Most of the modern domes comes with a remote control screen below the skylight, which can be closed and opened obviously. 😂
I think in many aspects your right, But it is still a tent. if this would be from concrete or ceramic, isolated eso, you would not have that many contras anymore. also , you where their in a bad moment, namly, they where still in construction mode. I want to buy a land and slowly build our house. Me and my husband are considering leaving in one of those meanwhile. Is kind of hard find review about people leaving in this. I am concerning about the heat during summer time.
This one had an AC unit. They seem rather popular. I would reach out to the owners at Balsam ridge perhaps they could give you some info on costs in the summer for them to keep cool :)
My wife and I are planning that for this summer. We are looking at one of the large models 44' to live under while hand-building a more permanent structure inside.
I hate videos like this. Because just because you might not like it ohter people do. In this day and time. Apartments for real nice ones 3,4900 that is a house payment. We totally love our domes, they are the perfect structure for us as we are only allowed canvas structures as part of our planning permission.
@tractorsandcream what kind of planning permissions?

Thank you for watching! Something different :)
Thank you só much! The noise info was very helpful to me!!
Glad it helped! Thank you for watching 😊
The bubble cost about 8k -12k. Now, the base, inside walls, kitchen, sewer, etc that would cost more. Probably about 25-30k total.
Where are you getting these numbers from? 😮😊
You can put a conventional roof on a geodesic dome, so sound and insulation wouldn't be an issue
Very cool idea and concept. I wonder if we have any of those in the US. I would love to try this out. Thanks for your insight and information
Oh I think there are! I've seen some on Levi Kelly's channel :)
Thank you for watching!
Where are you location/
It’s frikkkkkeeennnn cooooooollllll… yeah that’s why we buy them!!!
Here here! 🎉
Interesting about the sound. It would resonate like the inside of a drum.
I think if it was located in a different area than the one you were at and maybe not so close to other domes etc, it's a fun idea :)
This is just like renting a tent with a permanent frame and appliances, true domes are completely another matter.
I know of roofing companies that would rather go hungry than take a job replacing the roof of a hard shell dome because it's such a pain
A lot of domes are DIY, so i think replacing the roof wouldn't be a problem for anybody that built it himself. @@reedackerman9041
I can't see the roof material last more than 3 years regardless of what the manufacturer says, it would be nice to see an update 3 years later.
The covers last 30 years.
Useful video. Thank you

They're hard to heat and it sucks when they leak
Hey curious if u have first hand experience with that, I'm trying to find some first hand experience with these in all four seasons.
Ours heats just fine. Insulated the inside and the floors.

it is unfair to compare a tent to a permanent home.
I would like my geodesic dome to be my permanent home, I won't stop until I make that my case.

Some are made of concrete, they can potentially last for centuries.

Let's be honest, the main reason why people prefer geodesic domes over conventional gardening/greenhouses/camping is the aesthetics
The natural Air convection effect is also a big plus for greenhouses, makes temperature control and Air quality control very easy.
Miserable. Thanks for the warning.
