@@blcritic All three of the leads are really attractive, but for the characters they're portraying, and the storyline setting, it's not just based on how "hot" they may look together as a couple.

Combining time travel or alternate universe with romance for a "love out of time / out of place" effect is a hallowed sub-genre of both romance and sci-fi/fantasy. This teaser did its job in whetting the appetite for this iteration with compelling visuals and creating a wistful mood via the music and editing. A sense of loss, of longing, and of transience hung over the teaser. A bittersweet tale lies ahead--that is my takeaway.

The Koreans have ventured into the BL time vortex already. *Tinted With You* (not bad, not great) and *Once Again* (rather more successfully) both replicate the formula "present day person travels into the past to find his soulmmate." Arguably, *First Love Again* (good, not great) fits the category also, though here the formula uses reincarnation to bring souls from the past together in the present. All three are shorter (typical K-BL episode numbers and run time), and all three stream on Viki.

    • @j_scott
      @j_scott 2 года назад +4

@@johnmaster3748 I watched all three of those. Tinted With You needed another 5-6 episodes to really dive deeply into the characters and the time period. It could have been really good. First Love Again had some bright spots (loved the fox god). I'd argue that Once Again is the best of the three despite it's bittersweet ending.

@@j_scott I agree with everything you said, particularly the squandered potential of Tinted. I was already braced for a "logical" denouement to Once Again, and your "bittersweet" observation accords with what i expected--and experienced. Strongest of that trio, for sure.

I agree with the comments in here... Korea is ahead even when it comes to the subject matter for BLs.. but as you said.. all three were unable to do justice to our appetite for the time travel trope.. they did try but something was left to be desired more form them. hope this one sates us.

Funnily enough, Facebook this past weekend inserted into my feed a post by Jane Seymour (whom I do not follow and never search--so, why?). She was at the Grand Hotel in Michigan for a *Somewhere in Time* fan weekend. (The historic 19th century hotel served as the film's location.) That 1980 film was surely the first grown-up romance movie I ever badgered my parents to take me to (7th grade ). Superman actor Christopher Reeve playing the other lead surely was part of the draw for my 12 year-old self, but the time travel aspect of the story appealed as well. The premise here is nearly identical: man from the present drawn decades into the past and falls into a torrid romance. That film still has a thriving cult following 40+ years later. May this series linger just as long!

@@johnmaster3748 I'm hoping for the best with this upcoming series. If they have created a good, and solid script, I'm hoping that it will inspire other production companies to do more period piece BLs. I just started watching "Khun Chai" (I love that the translated English title is called, "To Sir With Love"), and if that series is successful, then I hope we can also get more lakorns centered on LGBTQ+ characters, that aren't produced like the "Club Friday" series.
I just think that there can be more growth in regards to quality over quantity within the Thai BL industry.

I'm very excited about the series, based both on the trailer and on your recommendation. You're right about the trailer giving the impression that the series will have a sad ending. I haven't read the novel, so I have no idea about the ending, but I'm hoping to not burst into tears.
I totally agree with your assessment of Something in My Room. I only watched the youtube version and I found long stretches of the episodes to be boring fillers. I did like the ending, though. Maybe I should try to go back and watch the unedited version to see if my opinion changes.

The other series this production house has done are among my all time favorites so I am optimistic. Plus the leads are of course very handsome (that shot of the actor wearing white trousers WOW). I just saw first ep of Remember me. Really liked it. Childhood friends, early 90s, Mean's hairstyle, didn't expect Ja & First. I happen to come across it due to YT recco. Was pleasantly surprised. Way better production value and rural backdrop. Came across another trailer of Step by step. Will see that series. Something new. Regular looking guys without obvious makeup or colored hair.
Why don't you prefer sepia toned videography? Especially for flashbacks from the past.

The first ep of Remember Me made me nostalgic.. as most of us passed through the transition period of IT, the msn and yahoo chat and messenger, the shift to digital camera from analogues ones.. I wanna watch more and I like sepia tone too.. it gives us a different feeling. I just didn't want it on I Feel you Linger in the Air as it makes things a bit less colorful.
And yes, I am excited about Step by Step too.. Dee Hup house is on fire.

When I first saw this teaser, and I remembered your list I went WOW, it looked really good. I really like the two actors and really liked the retro feel and thought can't wait for that until I realized it was that love from a different time story, like the Once Again series, and have to say I was disappointed. Really not a fan of these kinda stories, kinda put it into the body swap or love with a ghost, to unbelievable catagory. I did give Stranger in My Room a pass and kinda liked it, maybe the good things will out weigh the story line on this one as well.

Umm.. these subjects are a bit difficult to do justice to and there is a fine line, if it gets right it becomes exceptional.. however, there is an equal chance of being a mess. It is Dee Hups' most ambitious project hope they don't overdo it.

Sorry guys did not know where to post this.
Kit Conner "I'm bi, congrats for forcing an 18 year old to out himself. I think you missed the point of the show. Bye" a target of social media mobs who said he was "queerbaiting". Elijah from Game Boys, " I am not going to do anymore gay roles, maybe another season of Game Boys but I think those roles should go to real gay people." So he is not gay or bi, all that stuff between him and Kokoy was them doing fan service, him saying Kokoy was his celebrate crush was queerbaiting. When an actor in a bl role says I do not like labels, love is love that is a big hint but later after they get the fame lables are ok when they want a non bl career. Nanon " my real friends know I am straight". So everything he did in Safe House and during and after Bad Buddy was just fan service, queerbaiting, method acting???. So more than friends means you can kiss your best friend on the mouth, hang all over him, say how much you love each other, sleep in the same bed (and do what ever) but you are not gay or even bi just more than friends. War, who has said in the past he is bi, when asked if he was LGBTQ+ went on a rant about why can't everything be normal. My response would be if you want things to be normal be honest about your relationship with Yin for starters. I am sorry Kit that the gay mob forced you out boohoo but come on what did you think you were signing up for when you cast for a hugely famous LGBTQ+ web comic, you didn't think you would be famous and be a LGBTQ+ role model. Come on can't have it both ways people.
