In our country (Italy) the Gentry was an upmarket version of the 1.9 GTI with 130bhp, and only offered in dark metallic green. A gem.
Just so you know, the "sculpted bit of plastic" in front of the gear stick does open, revealing quite a large bin for storing biscuits and what have you. I'd also like to argue that 205's don't rust like crazy, mine survived its first 25 years of Finnish snow, salt and rain with very minimal rust. And it's still around, just not in my hands anymore. That being said, I wish I'd never sold it - it was a very nice XR I built into a XS. Went like stink with the XS cam and carb, while still being very economical and incredibly dependable transport for a poor student. Just like you said, great little cars! Thanks for the video!
yeah i dont think they rust that much really, peugeots from that era are pretty good compared to what I've seen from the common ford, vauxhalls and toyotas (having just welded all the holes in my 91 corolla I can atest to that)
Pegeuots do not rust like those overhyped German things that dangerously ferry arrogantonaughts about.
@@triodehexode Srsly, i just got rid of BMW e39 cpl of months ago and coulnd't be happier. The thing was a hidden rust bucket death trap and it was never crashed... I also had 2 Opel Astra's F before and they rusted as crazy too. I really don't get the Hype about German cars. They aren't reliable (exept cpl of old diesels with 75hp) , neither practical, economical or anything.
@@knkjkjn had a mid 80s polo in 1992 it was starting to rust the big ends went on it on the motorway in 1994 then got a 89 205 lasted me 6 years without major issue or rust and was still going in 2004.
A classic and timeless design, still looks great today. Peugeot never really reached the same heights after this. The latest 208 is the best looking ‘2’ since the original 😀🇫🇷

They're only starting to rust now just because they're so old. Probably one of the most rust-resistant cars of its era.
I totally agree, they are well known for their absence of rust. I believe they were galvanised in the factory.
Peugeot absolutely nailed it with their design in the 80's and 90's. The 205, 306 and even the 405/405 were good looking cars. Went a bit downhill after that.
That’s absolutely immaculate, this is an absolute legend of the Peugeot Marque of course the GTi is the ultimate legend of 205, the wheels are definitely 405 . Clarion radio in Peugeot was very good in their day.
Omg I loved these - super rare car you tried there! Theyr were so posh. The 205 is STILL one of the best looking cars, period. Peugeot really hit the nail on the head with the styling there. That car is absolutely beautiful and it looks cleaner than new - amazing. The Clio Bacarra I think started the posh little hatchback craze in the early 90s. What a great review and car Matt!

This was Peugeot's answer to the Renault Baccara range. I remember this 205 Gentry. It was a beauty indeed.
Renault also made a luxurious minis. 5 Baccara, Clio Baccara or Initiale Paris. I have a Twingo Initiale Paris from 2001. Not that powerful but with manuał gearbox.

Do you have any fancy equipment in it? I saw them ,but they look like regular Twingos from outside. Does the Initiale models come with the bed opiton,where you can sleep in the back?
@@knkjkjn you can check videos on my channel. My Twingo has leather seats, aircon, electric windows and mirrors (heated), glass roof, power steering, 4 airbags; You can sleep if you want because of folded seats; It' s quite luxurious version of Twingo ;)

I thought those alloys looked like the ones they used on 405s!
The same wheels were also to be found on the 205 STDT in either beige or silver depending on the body colour.
I have an STDT in exactly the same colour but it has a cloth interior instead of leather which is far better imho. I have had it over 20 years and it is still going strong. When I bought it I had it tuned by a Peugeot specialist to raise the power from 78bhp to 104bhp and with loads more torque. It was as fast as a 1.6GTi, but with decent fuel economy. Best car I have ever owned, certainly the most fun car I have driven. Great value for money.
The footage when you are driving is quite blurred which is annoying. I thought this was a thing of the past now on most YT channels?
I had a 1.4 GL 204 in the early 90 but always want a Gentry as soon as can on the mark
The lower tuned 1.9 litre was also used in the GTI in some export markets. According to Wikipedia, the Gentry also has power steering and heated mirrors. The steering on the GTI is a bit heavy at low speeds, so the PS would make a much more pleasant driving experience. PS was an option on very late GTIs.
One more posh extra I noticed: the rear seat backs on the lower models are finished in vinyl. Looks like the Gentry seat backs are carpeted.
BTW the sloping plastic on the lower console is actually a cubby. The round indentation on it is the button to open it.

My old 205 XS had the same bucket seats (apart from the leather) which are supremely comfortable. It also had the same clever sliding roof which had a rubber seal that filled with air when shut. Great cars 205; the best supermini ever.

I have to disagree about the rust, they were actually extremely well protected and back in the day I never recall seeing a rusty one unlike most of its competitors.
Probably my best purchase ever was £175 on an '86 Junior (954cc). Never driven anything so forgiving and chuckable. Made a traffic cop laugh with my £500, 8 speaker Pioneer Hi-fi. (Mistaken identity, it wouldn't go fast enough to get a ticket). Still miss it 18 years on.
In the early 2000's I got my hands on a 205 1.9 GTI Griffe. It had everything that the 205 had to offer. It was in mint condition, low mileage and I sold it after one year. Wish I i've kept it, the are worth a lot of money these days.
Holy crap it's in great condition, somebody loves this car and I'm glad they do.

Wasn't aware of this gentry model! I've only known of the 206 Roland Garros models with their green leather interiors and such.
The 1.9 engine was 'BIGGG' for such a small car. Mind you, even the 1.6 autobox had a pretty impressive poke for its day. They were lovely cars!
Love a 205, had an 89 1.6 GTi in Sorrento Green; let it go back in 06 😭
I love this, it reminds me of the Renault Clio Initiale Paris my family used to own a long time ago.
I drove one of these for a while in the late 90's it was a lovely little car.

Hah I spotted this on the Stone Cold website when I checked out the Cappuccino after your review and wondered if you'd be driving this. I too had never heard of a Gentry model but what a great oddity. Peugeot really seemed to like a luxury small car as evidenced by the Roland Garros trim. I remember that even making it into a 106.

Can’t believe it I owned one just like this one same colour as well, bought it in Luton back in 1999 for only £700 it was a K reg, I used it’s for a few years and loved it, all my friends had Vauxhall Nova’s and later citroen saxo’s, the gentry is very rare this is the only other I’ve seen since I got ready of mine back in 2004, lovely little motor

Working in a Peugeot dealership throughout the 90’s I remember these though we didn’t sell many. A late model of the 205 using various parts up I guess. They certainly were very luxurious 27-28 years ago. The alloy wheels were from the 405, originally fitted to the GTX i and TD models though were fitted to other 405’s later on. The centre caps had a tendency to fly off!

I'd heard of the Gentry model before. There was a 106 version too. I'd imagine the Roland Garros ran the Gentry close in the poshness stakes.
Amazing! We had 3 205 1.4, 1st and 2nd gen, always loved them. Even good for some serious long distance driving like 600mi/day at a steady 80 mph on the French autoroutes. A bit noisy, but steeringwise better than most modern cars, and as such relaxing and feels secure. The gentry should even be a step up, but I’m not sure given it had PS. Still regret they’re all gone...
They where also sold here, we had a Peugeot dealer in our village. Only as GTI Gentry. You also had Roland Garros edition with beige and green interior. These where also very luxurious. Our local general practitioner had a 205 GTI Gentry back in the 90's. Great video Matt, enjoyed it!
I think they were more common in left hand drive, if the Japanese hadnt cancelled the order we would never have got them - I dont think there were any other right hand drive markets they were selling in that were suitable to take them!

I always wonder about these "special edition" cars, and the thought process of someone who decides "that's the car for me". Even more curious that they then don't drive it, just moth ball it. Great that something so rare still exists in original condition, but somehow sad that it was never driven, like those "collector's" toys in their boxes, never played with.
If I had the spare cash I'd buy it and drive it every day; even in winter. I know...I'm a monster!
The practical thing about special editions is you get things as standard for less than they would cost to spec. If you want sunroof and aircon, and there's a special edition offering them, it's probably a better deal.
The late 80s early 90s were kind of the heyday for special editions. Look at the list of special editions for the Citroen AX, there must be over 100.

I recently purchased a 5 dr 1.6 auto' and have to say it's one of the best auto boxes I've driven in a small car and it's just extremely comfortable.
My first car was a 1.4 205. Terrific car. The gentry is cool, but I reckon the more basic 205s feel more appropriate, more French.
Wow this is a nice 205. I must admit i do like the 205, i have never owned one but have driven a friends one and they are really nice to drive. Never been in an auto 205 either so this video was good to watch especially with all that luxury trim. Its funny how this was Aztec gold and then later on in 1996 they called the 106 special edition the Aztec/Inca range (yes my car did show up in your suggested next videos, being the 106 Aztec Si) I do like the wheels on this, they remind me somehow of the old Ford Capri Ghia wheels, google them and see what you think? Not identical i know but something about them. That 6 dial dash too, you dont get that now in cars, Oil pressure and temp. I also love the huge sliding sunroof. Shame no tea shelf though, you would think, being such high spec, it would have picnic tables or something of that sort. Great video as always

That curved piece in front of the auto shifter does open press the circle! At least it did on my J reg 205 XT. (looked like a GTI but only had the 1.4l engine). I also had that amazing sunroof!
Oooh, I had one back in 98 when i was 19. Thought at the this was the only one. Got rid after a year due to the auto box slipping.
I do remember these, but cannot say if I ever actually saw one or not. This is a lovely example and would make an excellent usable car today.
I had a gold 1992 k reg gentry with the air tube holding manual slide sunroof from 1997-2003 after my 1.6 gti 92-97. I loved it .. wish I had kept it even though it loved drinking petrol.

Very interesting, Matt. Another car we never saw here in Canada. I'm guessing that when the engine was detuned it was more like retuned for more torque to allow for the automatic gearbox. All in all, a really neat little car.
I think it must have been, those old autos were pretty bad!
Lovely Cars. Everybody says "Drive a 205GTi" - but if, like me, you cant stir porridge (Cerebral Palsy) then a Gentry would be the nearest I'd get. Pity they didn't make more of them. If I ever win the lottery......

It reminds me of a 1988 Renault 5 Monaco I briefly owned. It looks as if Peugeot upped the game with a decent engine which the Monaco was sadly lacking.
Lovely car, wheels do look like they’re from a 405, although my Grandma used to own an M reg 1.6 205 Auto in light blue with similar style wheels.

Matt that’s a Northern Ireland car from “Bairds” Peugeot dealer Belfast. My dad was the service manager there. Wonderful to see this although sad it’s left our shores.
Now thats a coincidence! He may well have sat in this car!
Bairds, like so many dealers bought over by Hurst/Lookers, remember going to their Annandale Embankment garage (Dunnes Stores) for parts for my Hillman Minx.
@@DavidJohnston58 again my dad started off there - where dunnes stores is now. Think bairds was also based actually on the ormeau road too beside the library. Who remembers the bairds boucher road second hand show room where the cars were lined up inside and all the clunkers lines outside at the back

Great little runner, I ‘ve had the Génération, went from grandpa to my sister to me. Did 300k with the 1360 cc engine on one clutch. It was light and fast. Ran out of the speedometer on the Autobahn. Replaced the head gasket and the subframe, the one and only item with was rotten on the car.

I can't think of another car such as the 205 that was so warmly received that the company facelifted all the other cars in the range to match the styling as customers loved it so much

205's rust? They're one of the better cars of the 80's for rust resistance. Also, the centre console storage area opens by pressing the round button on the lid.
I agree I’ve got 2 205’s and had loads of Peugeot’s. Yes rust gets into hidden areas after 30 years but a 3 year old Ka or metro wouldn’t be far off having holes appearing

While at college a mate of mine had a 205 with those exact wheels but if memory serves it was a GTI TDI with special ed black paint,. That was a high spec machine but toward the sporty end of the market. Never seen another like it.
Would be an STDT. The other 205 with those wheels as standard.
What a lovely car and what a bargain as there are a few hich mileage versions of lesser spec 205s at around this price.! It appears to have been sold now.
This car was registered in England in around 2010 so at least you can look at the mot history from then. We don't have that facility here in N. Ireland, and it's one of the reasons why I'd be reluctant to buy locally ( my current Kia Rio came from Leeds).
There can be problems with such low mileage cars, the main one is that the car has only ever been driven for short journeys and the poor engine has never reached running temperature. This one seems to have escaped this for the last 10 years of its life, as it would seem that it has been garaged except to take it for MOTs.
There are quite a few cars here which have been used their whole lives for doing a run to the shop half a mile away for the morning paper. I wouldn't touch one with a bargepole.

Gentry as a trim level was carried over to the 206 range, I almost got one but opted for the XS version.
Not many of those left now... Driven a few in my time, great little cars.

I can only think someone’s mum/grannie had this, my own mum who is nudging 90 still drives (well sort of) bought a top spec twingo (awful) in 2012 and has covered a total of 2500 miles in 8 years, it still looks new and lives in a very dry garage - so at some point an awful but mint twingo will be on the market with stupid low mileage. It has a full Renault service history as well, which is about as far as it goes every year 🤣

Really enjoyed this video and always loved the 205 but never owned one. I did have an auto 206 some years ago but probably not in the same league.
Those alloys are indeed also found on some 405s... the gtx model. Used to hunt out these in scrappies for my 205 rally car as the gtx wheels are stronger than the standard 14inch 205 alloys and much cheaper than compomotive alloys!!
I remember these from the new car listings at the back of What Car? magazine. I don't think a manual gearbox was an option. Rival to the Renault Clio Baccara.
We were deprived of these sweet little machines in the silly U.S. I want one.
People forget it was the French who brought the luxury small car to the masses. Peugeot has this and the Roland Garros versions, Renault had Monaco and Baccara Supercinque models.

205's were so desirable especially in diesel i wanted one so badly, but never got one as they were to costly to buy for me....i had to settle for a talbot horizon.... well it did have the same diesel motor. I did get to drive a 205 much later on as it was my mums last car ...well past its prime but still pulled like a train and retained its economy till it went to scrappy when mam gave up driving
I really love the 205. Such a beautiful car! Too bad they are becoming really expensive in The Netherlands. As in thousands of euro's for a good one.. But then again all cars are overpriced here ;)

Love this overly plush 205; it was sometimes quite amazing how luxurious a 205 or Citroën BX could eventually get. Plus they were great cars to drive (as was the 405). Ah, PSA, what have you done? BTW; I agree Matt, those underslung spare tyres are a nightmare, besides the mud and rain, the bolt holding the cradle can be fused with rust, either unwilling to let go or breaking, leaving you with a road-trailing wheelcradle :-)
Leather seats in green version could be beige as well. Gentry was also with LHD.
The (UK) brochure said the green cars only got dark seats, maybe different in LHD?
