Instead I remember the back of the house kitchen/dining room extension that painfully gobbled up all the cash over that fateful summer. Not to worry though, I was divorced by 1989 and solicitor kindly drafted me a divorce and house sale agreement. Ahhhhhh happy memories!
It is near absurdly expensive, but if I heard Catchpole right he said there was 700 hours into this build. That type of work doesn’t come cheap, and of course doesn’t include parts and exclusively designed components within.

Renualt 5 turbo back day would leave them a standing back day I had fiesta rs turbo .. but always wanted Renault 5 turbo .. 1 was front me 1 night on country road 3 morning n way those things stuck road was absolutely crazy they couldn't close grip on corner it was virtually impossible but always rember gettin shot of peauget 309 model and they had some kick to them right right enough also

U do know the Geo Metro in other part of the world is the Suzuki Swift GTi? It came with a 100hp 1.3 NA and it kick ass during the 90s APRC running strong with the VR4, EVO2 and Impreza. U can Google team Silverstone Suzuki Asia Pacific Rally Championship. It was run by New Zealander or Aussie team. My point is, get the Geo Metro and the crashed Suzuki Swift GTi are still available in Asia. U can build your own and it won't cost a bomb like the other over hype JDM

Agreed! a mate of mine back in the late 90's turned up at mine one time and said he had a 1.9 GTi outside. I convinced him to let me drive it, I was surprised how strong and fast it felt instantly, and I scared the shite out of him, so unfortunately that was my first and last drive in the Peugeot 205 GTi.
I've driven plenty of fast cars till this date, but i'll never forget the time i drove that 205 1.9 gti, it was a mega car, so analogic, so special, pure driving experience, love the engine, the chassis, the steering feel and even the gearbox, and i even like those Peugeot gearboxes! I had two Peugeot 205 gti's and I wish I still had them, I had a 206 gti a few years later and it never made me smile like driving the 205 . It also makes me feel old seeing this video of the 205.
I had a 1.6, the liftoff oversteer was sublime, almost telepathic in how it set the car up for the exit of the turn. It wasn't quick or out of control, it was progressive and nothing like a Fiat Uno Turbo or a Mk1 MR2 !
@@diesel9677 EH? I'm saying the off throttle oversteer on the 205 is nice and progressive, the Mk1 MR2 is evil as it snaps into off throttle oversteer. The 205 is a dream to play with the throttle to line yourself up with the exit of a corner. The MR2 is the complete opposite with the way it snaps into oversteer, it's no fun at all and at some point will bite you in the arse.
My 205 Gti was tail happy (I only spun it once) but my brothers MR2 Mk1 handled well, and his 309 Gti handled superbly (he's just bought one again after all these years).
Very similar to my 205 gti. It started out as an australian spec 1.9 (drum rear and 1.6's shorter gearbox), then ended up with a 200hp mi16 and a quaife diff under the hood. It went like a tarmac rally car with that close ratio box and insanely revvy engine. Still the best FWD i've ever driven, even in stock trim it will send shocks down your spine. Amazing balance, brilliant feel through the controls, turn-in like you wouldn't believe. It will undo the conditioning that fwd = understeer within a couple of corners.
@@isyt1 They're an insanely tuneable engine, the head flows so well that if you've got the money you can pump out a fairly dependable 280hp. In the touring cars they went to 300. Mine just had cams and a bit of head work, another guy in the peugeot club had a full on f2000 car which was mental.

Trip down memory lane. I love the 205 Gti and was a hugh fan of the Renault 5 Turbo. Although i love nostalgia, particularly for 80's hot hatches i just couldn't justify the cost here even with all the work done. The car for me from this era that has always stuck with me more is the corrado vr6. Even to this day i miss mine. I would love for someone to do a remod of this vehicle as that would be amazing.
@2702simmo if you ever do, make sure its the VR6, preferably a later 94-96 model European spec. Even better, the Storm edition is in blue and, of course, manual. G60 was cool, but VR6 was something else.

I built one for £92 once, I got a 205 GTI 1.6 with a blown head gasket from the 205 GTI drivers forum for £30 and a Citroen BX 16v MOT failure from Ebay for £62. That was probably 2002 or 2003 so slightly longer ago than 15 years but still goes to show how the prices have changed.
They weren't supposed to do that? ALL of mind did. I thought it was a styling feature (or some kind of emergency braking system, like a braking assist of the 90's) 😂😂
Looking forward to this vid, I have 1.6, 1.9 and modified Mi16, well over 200hp 205’s etc….. the mi is totally stripped and weighs nothing…. Quite simply frantic…Perfect….they are great cars, driven and owned most cars on the planet and these really do make me totally content, I hanker after nothing else…..
Amazing video by Henry and the team, as always. What a lovely little car. While it doesn't quite have the same appeal in the US as in the UK, it's great to see enthusiast cars from across the pond and a stellar example at that. Now that the folks who had these in their youth are in their peak earning years they can afford to splurge and build the ultimate versions of them. Nice to see one built in a subtle manner. Folks who are critical of the cost should be aware that the 700 hours of labor in this car at a specialty shop isn't cheap. In the US you're looking at ~$150/hr at a specialist nowadays and I imagine it's even higher in the UK and, with operating costs and regulations in both countries being what they are, the margins aren't as high as one would assume.
Had a 205 1.9 GTi back when i first met my wife and i was 29 yrs old , she asked if i had a nice car on our first date lol , i said yeh sort of 😉 When i took her for a spin the first time she was shcked how fast it was 😁 I sold it for a family car years later and regretted it ever since , cherry red and it was immaculate 😊 Hands down the best car i ever owned 👌
My Peugeot 205 XS is the only car I regret selling. Fabulous little thing. I've driven GTi's and they are great, but the XS was a buzzy little fun box.
This is basically a recipe that all the 205 guys were doing back in the day. Mi16 engine, Peugeot 406 Coupe Brembo's, throttle bodies and cams. I am 6ft 3" and much prefer the 306 Rallye myself but they are going up in price as well. They did a 309 Mi16 in France too so if you want something like this for a fraction of the price I would look at getting a ferry and get one of those.
I built one of these 20 years ago, 16v, cams, throttle bodies. Makes 194bhp and it still makes me laugh when I occasionally drive it! I reckon it cost me about £6k to build including the mapping.
And now add up all the hours you spend on it. And imagine getting billed £50-80 per hour because someone else is doing the work and presto, £$€50,000 gone…
You're over-estimating the time and effort involved, I've fitted loads of Mi16 engines into 205 GTIs over a lazy weekend. But in this case IIRC Simes paid uncle Miles to do the work so he'll know exactly what it cost and it wont have been £50k lol! @@ivar5433😉
@@ivar5433 They are simple to work on though, and fairly reliable. Also, spending 50k over 20 years is quite different to spending 150k in one lump sum, then still having to spend 50k again to maintain going forward. So, I'm not even sure on the point you are making tbh

I'm just glad I got to experience them before this madness. They are great things & I WILL build the 2.0 8v (or 16v) turbo converted 205 I always planned on, I guess it just might not be a GTI shell. I can live with that.
I'd love to see a restomod of the Peugeot 406 saloon, the pre facelift model. With the 2.9 V6 tuned to aprox 300hp and that signature front-end grip that was a joy to play with. What a great machine that was! And the coupe 406 was a gorgeous sports car designed by Pininfarina that will always be a classic. What an era for Peugeot that was...
The SBC 1.9 GTi-S was good as a package, particularly with both the Phase 1 and 2 suspension kits, but they weren't anything like 160hp on an honest set of rollers (in my experience anyway)
Great video, I'm in my late 50s and was lucky enough to own both the 1.6 and 1.9 both amazing, for me the Alfasud was more fun but admittedly not a better built car! Im looking for a 205gti now
So few modern cars that you can buy new today are desireable, even with a large or even unlimited budget. This thing is just fantastic and doesn't look dated at all.
Sounds nice and urgent, doesn't it. I remember back in the day and people were putting in 16 valvers from the BXGTi/405M16. Always wondered why Peugeot never did that themselves...
The cam cover nearly touches the brake master cylinder in right hand drive 205 Mi16s, it would have needed so many changes to mass produce them they'd have needed to update the type approval which is very expensive. They did fit the 16v engine to 309 GTIs but only in left hand drive for the same reason.
People misuse and misunderstand nostalgia. Nostalgia is actually about how EVERYTHING is better in the past. When you look back on the worst of times in the past you still feel a yearning and fondness for them, and THAT is what nostalgia really is.
I had a standard 1.9GTi, if you cornered it hard clips would ping out of the dashboard. I was going around a large roundabout quickly once and the passenger window dropped inside the door. They flexed so much it's hard to imagine any are still around! Fun when you're 19 though......
I am having a hard time believing any of this. Source: Slalom and Hill Climb Racing 205 GTis for 2 decades. The non-sunroof chassis are the stiffest of their time&class, the interieur parts we left in the cars are as good today as they were 20 years ago.
Businessmen are starting to figure out that you can slightly update/modernize just about any old pile and people will will blow ridiculous $$$. This is just hilarious.
I miss mine so much, i have many configs and a few back in the day when they were cheap. The 1.9 engine with a 1.6 gearbox was the best of all. I had an mi16 and a 306 gti-6 engined one also that i built, but the 1.9 engine on a 1.6 box was such an animal. Would not want to crash in one mind lol.
I drove the 205 gti 1.6 the first weeks of its release a friend was buying several cars for his company and the garage owner let him have it for a long weekend by gum it was fun my friend let me have it for a day and what a blast.
When I read that I it has a 16v 1.9l I immediately knew it is a beefed up Mi16 engine and from all my experience, it is one of the most exciting NA 4 bangers of the 80s. Instantly approved
You can keep the analog dials if you wish. These "fake" analog dials are both impressive and repulsive. I don't know which I prefer. I would have to see them in person.
We had a 1.6 when I was a kid, no idea how as we were so poor we barely had two pennies together to rub together. The engine eventually seized, I think because it didn't have antifreeze in it. However, that car was absolutely spell-binding around the country roads where we lived. My step-father used to take me out on a Sunday morning to "buy the papers" and we would hoon around on our way to and from the newsagent. That car inspired my friend so much that he had a succession of 205 GTIs when he left school, and also decided to do an Mi-16 mod. Unfortunately that car is still sitting in the garage more than 20 years after he started it. Still waiting for him to finish...

Closest i got was a 1l. The rear quarter panel was so flimsy you could prod it with one finger. Not safe. Thankfully a conrod decided to part company with the engine before i got a chance to kill myself. 😅
I had a 1.6gti and I eventually mastered the lift off oversteer and spent many a happy times going sideways through roundabouts etc, i miss that car and I should never have sold it.
I loved my 205 GTI back in the day, I wish I still had it, great car to drive and you actually did have to drive it, not like this modern stuff. It let you know when you were pushing it to it limits, and and certainly let you know when you over did it.
Oh brilliant. This is what we need, people restoring/preserving classic 'everyman' hot hatches to the point of absolute unaffordability on the used market. Talk about jumping on the restomod bandwagon. I appreciate there are levels of car ownership of course. But how is this exercise in excess, really that much better than any of the affordable classic GTis I see bombing down the backroads of Wales, used in autosolos and modified by normal people.

I had a 205 GRD as my first car. I would happily have this but would probably go down the original route and build my own. Just need to get one before the prices get even more crazy.

200BHP in a 205! Wow! I had a 1.9, so much fun! Loved it. It went pretty well with only 130 BHP, hardly any weight to move.
My mate put an Mi16 engine in his 1.9 205 which took it to about 160 break then later added a supercharger. Was rapid

The Corrado in yellow was always a dream car as a teenager, 47 now. I’ve bought most cars I liked over the years but never a Corrado and I regret that

Don Draper famously described nostalgia as "It's delicate, but potent". I can think of no better words to describe the 205 GTI.

This is basically a recipe that all the 205 guys were doing back in the day. Mi16 engine, Peugeot 406 Coupe Brembo's, throttle bodies and cams. I am 6ft 3" and much prefer the 306 Rallye myself but they are going up in price as well. They did a 309 Mi16 in France too so if you want something like this for a fraction of the price I would look at getting a ferry and get one of those.
I built one of these 20 years ago, 16v, cams, throttle bodies. Makes 194bhp and it still makes me laugh when I occasionally drive it!
I reckon it cost me about £6k to build including the mapping.
Can you imagine if you'd sold it? So glad I still have mine too.
And now add up all the hours you spend on it. And imagine getting billed £50-80 per hour because someone else is doing the work and presto, £$€50,000 gone…
You're over-estimating the time and effort involved, I've fitted loads of Mi16 engines into 205 GTIs over a lazy weekend. But in this case IIRC Simes paid uncle Miles to do the work so he'll know exactly what it cost and it wont have been £50k lol! @@ivar5433😉
@@ivar5433 They are simple to work on though, and fairly reliable.
Also, spending 50k over 20 years is quite different to spending 150k in one lump sum, then still having to spend 50k again to maintain going forward. So, I'm not even sure on the point you are making tbh

They are great things & I WILL build the 2.0 8v (or 16v) turbo converted 205 I always planned on, I guess it just might not be a GTI shell. I can live with that.
We had a 205 1.9 GTI (called the "lion cub") - and my God, it was great! I am happy for every buyer who will acquire a Talman...🥰...!
I purchased a new 205 Gti 1.9 in the late 1980s. Fabulous car, every journey an adventure until it was stolen.
The little GTI was ‘the’ car that caught my eye upon my first visit to Europe in the ‘90’s - this one really speaks to me.
I'd love to see a restomod of the Peugeot 406 saloon, the pre facelift model. With the 2.9 V6 tuned to aprox 300hp and that signature front-end grip that was a joy to play with. What a great machine that was! And the coupe 406 was a gorgeous sports car designed by Pininfarina that will always be a classic. What an era for Peugeot that was...
This and a MST Mk1 currently occupy my dream car garage. Well done!
One of my 205's (J69 MBA) had a Skip Brown 'S' conversion. 160bhp in the original car was incredible.
SBC conversions were good but so much more money than an Mi16 swap!
The SBC 1.9 GTi-S was good as a package, particularly with both the Phase 1 and 2 suspension kits, but they weren't anything like 160hp on an honest set of rollers (in my experience anyway)

Great video, I'm in my late 50s and was lucky enough to own both the 1.6 and 1.9 both amazing, for me the Alfasud was more fun but admittedly not a better built car! Im looking for a 205gti now
I had one ride in an Alfasud. Thought it was slow but light and fun.....until the entire rear-hatch window fell out onto the road!

My brand new 1.6 205gti replaced my 1.5 Alfasud. They are both etched in my heart in different ways, in equal measure. ❤

Sounds nice and urgent, doesn't it. I remember back in the day and people were putting in 16 valvers from the BXGTi/405M16. Always wondered why Peugeot never did that themselves...
The cam cover nearly touches the brake master cylinder in right hand drive 205 Mi16s, it would have needed so many changes to mass produce them they'd have needed to update the type approval which is very expensive. They did fit the 16v engine to 309 GTIs but only in left hand drive for the same reason.

I had a standard 1.9GTi, if you cornered it hard clips would ping out of the dashboard. I was going around a large roundabout quickly once and the passenger window dropped inside the door. They flexed so much it's hard to imagine any are still around! Fun when you're 19 though......
I am having a hard time believing any of this. Source: Slalom and Hill Climb Racing 205 GTis for 2 decades. The non-sunroof chassis are the stiffest of their time&class, the interieur parts we left in the cars are as good today as they were 20 years ago.
Sounds like it had badly repaired accident damage or something. Standard original 205 GTIs do not do any of that.
Businessmen are starting to figure out that you can slightly update/modernize just about any old pile and people will will blow ridiculous $$$. This is just hilarious.

I miss mine so much, i have many configs and a few back in the day when they were cheap. The 1.9 engine with a 1.6 gearbox was the best of all. I had an mi16 and a 306 gti-6 engined one also that i built, but the 1.9 engine on a 1.6 box was such an animal. Would not want to crash in one mind lol.
I drove the 205 gti 1.6 the first weeks of its release a friend was buying several cars for his company and the garage owner let him have it for a long weekend by gum it was fun my friend let me have it for a day and what a blast.
If i had the money i would buy one as soon as possible!! 😊

way back I had '86 1.6 GTi in black, my first hot hatch. Lovely car, mine did feel like a bag of nails but it was so much fun.
Owned nine years bk, last 1 was a 205 GTI 1.9 1993 k reg blue a/c & power steering! Payed 500 pounds replacing the head worked wonders after!
I rolled a F reg red 1.9 gti into a field after a rave high on a bloody strong dove back in the naughtiest

When I read that I it has a 16v 1.9l I immediately knew it is a beefed up Mi16 engine and from all my experience, it is one of the most exciting NA 4 bangers of the 80s. Instantly approved

You can keep the analog dials if you wish. These "fake" analog dials are both impressive and repulsive. I don't know which I prefer. I would have to see them in person.

We had a 1.6 when I was a kid, no idea how as we were so poor we barely had two pennies together to rub together. The engine eventually seized, I think because it didn't have antifreeze in it. However, that car was absolutely spell-binding around the country roads where we lived. My step-father used to take me out on a Sunday morning to "buy the papers" and we would hoon around on our way to and from the newsagent.
That car inspired my friend so much that he had a succession of 205 GTIs when he left school, and also decided to do an Mi-16 mod. Unfortunately that car is still sitting in the garage more than 20 years after he started it. Still waiting for him to finish...

Closest i got was a 1l. The rear quarter panel was so flimsy you could prod it with one finger. Not safe. Thankfully a conrod decided to part company with the engine before i got a chance to kill myself. 😅

I had a 1.6gti and I eventually mastered the lift off oversteer and spent many a happy times going sideways through roundabouts etc, i miss that car and I should never have sold it.
I paid £7k for my stock 1987 1.9 GTI in 1990; what a car it was in its day so this must be huge fun with 200bhp!

I loved my 205 GTI back in the day, I wish I still had it, great car to drive and you actually did have to drive it, not like this modern stuff. It let you know when you were pushing it to it limits, and and certainly let you know when you over did it.
Oh brilliant. This is what we need, people restoring/preserving classic 'everyman' hot hatches to the point of absolute unaffordability on the used market. Talk about jumping on the restomod bandwagon. I appreciate there are levels of car ownership of course. But how is this exercise in excess, really that much better than any of the affordable classic GTis I see bombing down the backroads of Wales, used in autosolos and modified by normal people.
Fond memories of a couple of 1.6 gtis, especially the Miami blue version even though it was nicked and recovered after being used in a robbery!

I had a 1.6 GTi and it was one of the most fun cars to drive. Oh and I did spin it once…….not sure how.
I spun mine only once as well, and also still not entirely sure why.
