Thanks for this. Plants are so expensive and the good ones quickly sell out. I'll pass this on to a relative who has a hard time getting around and may benefit from this.
Thank you for the information. I recently started gardening and wanted to get the same plants my deceased grandmother had in her garden. I was really sad when I learned they die in the winter but now hopefully they will keep going.
@@shanemccoy419 hope it works for you. By the way I jtook a few cuttings off my 4 year old bubblegum and they have rooted so it’s under the lights and protected until spring for those but the mother plant will stay in the greenhouse all winter. Good luck
Usually the warmer days in the greenhouse kickstarts the growth. Then I start watering with a low dose of liquid fertilizer. I will take cuttings from the new growth in late February into March which will be placed on heat mats and then under grow lights
Hi there, thanks for the video. I have a shed with a north facing window. I'm in zone 9b...mild winters. If I place them near the window will this be sufficient for my petunias? I have silver wave and I love them so much and they are hard to buy so would like to over winter them 🙂
Yes give it a go I would suggest a fan for air movement and watch the watering don’t let them dry out like you can with a geranium. Not wet but damp. If you have a shop light that would be great
Oh yes thank you for your comments. I will say not ALL the overwintered petunias made it. Probably 80% though. But I took over 100 cuttings so the few that didn’t make it have been replaced.
I water them from the bottom only to keep them slightly damp. No fertilizer until late Feb then I put them under the lights to wake up so I can start cuttings
My first year over wintering in zone 2B. I took cuttings in feb of my vista bubblegum, used rooting hormone, covered for humidity and placed them under the light. All cooked and died. So took a second cutting in march and i placed those in indirect light , not too wet and covered for warmth and i see most are still dying…what am i doing wrong?
Mmmmm. Could be your soil or cutting medium. I’ve found that if I use fine for bark the root easier then potting soil which has too much nitrogen. Straight perlite I’ve had success with but for bark is cheap and readily available in my area
What zone do you need to be in to do this? I live in Maine and we are in zone 4. an we keep them in the cellar like we do the overwintered geraniums? Thank you.
Oh wow Maine! You on on the Atlantic and I’m on the Pacific Ocean. I’m in zone 8b. Our winters are very mild compared to your zone 4. We can get into the 10-20° range for a few weeks. I’m not sure that they would survive in a cold greenhouse in zone 4. Great idea keeping them in the cellar. Do you have grow lights on them? Or take cuttings?
@@BusyBeaver22 I was wondering the same thing. I'm in zone 5b-6a so we get pretty long, harsh, cold winters but still some sunshine for 4-5 hours in the afternoons. We do have a tiny greenhouse that the homeowners before us built... no fancy lights or setup, basically just a wooden hotbox with some glass windows. I'll try your overwintering tips and hopefully we'll be able to replant our flowers each year.
Some people don't have any other choice but to buy new annuals every year (for those who prefers annuals) because, they don't have the facility nor the space to transplant and preserve them indoors, during the winter months when it's cold. Everybody is not fortunate to have a greenhouse. Besides, annuals are grown to be seasonal flowers anyway, and they're not meant to be permanent. That's what perennials are for. Actually, you're doing a lot more work transplanting them indoors, than what the flowers worth. You've done all that work to transplant petunias indoors, that only cost $5.00? The planters cost more than the flowers! Annuals are very inexpensive, so you're not wasting tons of money, when you buy them every year. They've served their purpose by adding color and beauty to your home, from Spring to Fall. Whenever the frost hits them and begins to die in the winter, pull them up and throw them away...What good is having money if a person doesn't want to spend, and enjoy it? You can't take it with you.
🤦♀️ which is exactly what he did is what you described....spend money his money and is enjoying it. To say that not everyone has space to overwinter plants is a huge generalization and also very false. One might need a foot or two to over winter, everyone has a foot or two of spare of room. What would have made the most sense to do is to simply decide to not overwinter your plants. No one said you have to! 🤦♀️ There was no reason at all for you take the video so personally and react in way as if you were attacked....keep in mind, you chose to watch the video, the choice was 100% yours, no one made you as much as no one is making you overwinter your plants.
To each their own. I'm having fun trying to save my favorite things from season to season - if they don't make it, then so be it - but I also try to save expensive ferns and unusual annuals that aren't always easy to find. No greenhouse for me, but I do have an attached garage and 3 season porch, so they serve me well. This hobby is about doing what you like and what brings you joy, so you do you! Happy gardening!
@ Great attitude, but then you’re a gardener. I’ve always found that most gardeners have a positive attitude about life. Maybe it’s the part about always looking forward to the next season. Thank you for you comment
Thanks for the video,I learned a lot. Anyone ever told you that ya look like James Maynard Keenan, the singer for the band Tool? Because you really do lol even a quiet demeanor like him..

How often do you water in the winter. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom and knowledge.
@@lauriehall7841 just barely damp. Not soggy

Do u have to water them?
Yes keep them damp not wet or soggy
Do you water them and how often?
I water them from the bottom only to keep them slightly damp. No fertilizer until late Feb then I put them under the lights to wake up so I can start cuttings
How cold does your shed get?
It can get down to the teens (F) but the key is you need a fan. Constantly moving air
