I have saved my geraniums overwinter in a brown paper sack tightly closed. This will be their 5th year. I took slips last year. They did well! So fun watching them grow.
I kept mine over winter in a dark room with controlled heat and watered very lightly during winter. They continued to produce new leafs. I took them outside a few days ago. I already see a cluster of bugs forming in one spot. This is my first time saving my geraniums. I LOVE IT!
Just finished winterizing my geraniums a few minutes ago, following your instructions. So glad this one popped up so that I’ll know what to do come spring. Thanks!
Thanks for the tips. I started digging mine from the container just as what you did and I put them in the box. Saves me from buying next year . Thank you x
Thanks for these tips! Its my first year keeping them dry. Excited to see them revitalize! Always seems a shame to throw away and I don’t have much window space inside for full plants, and they are so expensive to buy each year so this is great. 🤞
I have always kept mine in my dinning room window all winter. Been doing that for over forty years Never a problem. I do cut them back Just a little....
Thank you for sharing. I just bought and potted 5 large geranium. $15 US per plant. So glad to know I can store them for next year instead of throwing them out in the winter.
I winterized my geraniums last year using your video and now it's March 6, I am going to pot them up, excited to see if it works for me, and if it does, excited I'll save some money as I always buy geraniums each year and throw them out when they are done.
Thank you very much for these two videos! ❤️🌿😀 My Geraniums are soaking now (hope I didn’t wait to long 🥴 ) I’m in zone 6b so I’m hoping it works as a first timer! 🤞🏻
Very low key and soothing video, like listening to the gentle clapping at a golf game. Very clear instructions with no frills- I like it and will give it the old British try, both the putting in the box before winter and the taking out and replanting at end. Thanks for the idea- if all goes right I will have my most eye-popping true red geraniums back again next year.
Thank you for the clear and to the point instructions!!! This was first year storing in a box and just about to pull them out to get started! Wish me luck you make it so easy :)
Hi Sandy. Thank you for your appreciation. Yes you can repot them and put them out - bring them in each evening until the risk of frost has passed. Keep safe.
Our winters in Canberra go down to about -4 degrees. I just leave my pelargoniums where they are in the garden. The die down for sure, and look just like yours, all withered and crappy, and then in the spring they grow again, all by themselves. I don't have to go to all the trouble of digging them up, storing them, replanting and fussing. Is this because my winter is milder than yours?
Really useful video and explanation, thank you. It's now late February in UK, when I bring them out what sort of temperatures do they need? My garage is min 10C/50F at the moment, will that be warm enough or should I wait a little longer
Glad it was helpful! Your garage will be fine. I have some in my greenhouse at the moment where the night temperature can get near to freezing and they are doing ok. Keep safe.
I had good success bringing them back to life, all eight of them! Now some of them are starting to rot at the terminal ends of the branches. How do I prevent this?
Thank you for this information. I did dig the geraniums from my garden beds and followed your method. I also had a very large one in a pot. I cut it back and have it my garage. Would you recommend that I put it under a grow light several hours a day mid-march so it would leaf out before removing it from the garage in late April? I am in Salt Lake City, Utah USA zone 6.
I would not use a grow light. As the weather starts to warm I would put it outside in the daytime and bring it in at night until it is warm enough to leave outside. Keep safe.
Thank you for both of your helpful videos. I'm a beginner watching from the countryside outside of Paris, France. Could you help on another matter? How to find out which growth zone we're in?
My geraniums are in a flower bed. Can I just cut them down and cover it with mulch instead of digging them out and store in a box? I am in zone 7 in the USA. Thanks.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR VERY USEFUL INFORMATION. I LEFT MY GERANIUMS PLANTS OUTSIDE IN WINTER. DO YOU THINK THE ROOTS HAVE SURVIVE TO GROW BACK AGAIN. I AM LOOKING FORWARD FOR YOUR REPLY.
Hi Shama. Thank you for your appreciation. I accidently left a couple out over winter and they have both died - they cannot survive the frosts. Keep safe.
Do they need to be sprayed while hibernating them? Some webpages say they may dry up specially the roots. Is that true? Or they are able to come back even if they look like a dried stick?
HI, @LearnHow2 What temperature would you call too high? I'm doing this for the first time, and keeping them in the cardboard box in the spare room which isn't heated. (south west uk.) about 10-15 degrees is that too high? Afraid it will be too cold for them in the garage.
Thanks for this. I tried several ways of over-wintering geraniums last year, and this was my most successful. When do you suggest is the best time to bring them out from winter storage? (UK, north east).
Hi Denise. So glad to be of help. I pot mine up mid March and keep them in a warm place (greenhouse) until the risk of frosts have passed (early June). Keep safe.
I tried this and it did not work. I opened the boxes this week and the plants were dry as a bone and brittle. The plants were kept in an evironmentally contrilled closet. Anyone else get better results?
If you can soak them in rainwater, it's better for the plant than tapster (which often has chlorine). If only tap water is available, let it sit overnight to lose the chlorine.
Would It Not Have Been Easier And Perhaps More Benifical To Just Have Removed The Leaves Prior To Boxing... When You Also Removed The Bad Leaves!!??🤔😞... As Alot Of Folks Do When Transplanting!!??🤔😞.... Especially Since They Were Obviously Going To All Turn Bad As Well"!!??🤔😞... Just Curious!!??🤔😞
Why would I torture the plants this way? You could just leave them in the pots and put them cool but frostfree or better use a growlight or put them light but cool.
Hi AB. I dont think saving a plant from certain death over winter is torture. I grow so many plants that I have no room for pots in my house. Keep safe.
Thank you! Brief and to the point. Very clear instructions. All the best to you.

Awesome tip. Thank you I had no idea how to bring them back from winter storage.
Thank you for your kind comments. Keep safe.
Perfect this is exactly what I needed to know today - thank you!

Yes its great that they can be saved! Keep safe.
Just watched your video. Seems easy to do. This will be my first time saving my geraniums over the winter. Hope it works! Thank you🤞
Good luck! I save mine every year.

Odlično i praktično rešenje, bravo.... 😀👍❤️🇲🇪🙋♀️🌹
👍👍👍
Very nice thanks we kept our indoors on a sunny vindow without heating and they still kept their green leaves and even grow a bit more.
Hi Callum. That is interesting - what part of the world do you live? Keep safe.
@@LearnHow2 Oh I live in Bc Canada zone 8b and this year the winter was really mild this year with some snow so the geraniums survived.
Last year I took cuttings and grew them inside in a cool room over winter. Most of them survived, but they do take up a lot of space.
Thank you for your very informative video. Ross Henderson (Edinburgh, Scotland). Viewed 1.4.24
My stems are brown?
Thanks so much ol chap….great video 😊

Thank you so much! I purchased over $100 worth of the Martha Washington and it's great to know that I can reuse them next year!

When do I take my plants indoors? When do I prepare them to be replanted in pots for outdoors?
Going to do mine today, just watched your first video Thanks
👍 Keep safe.
Thankyou so much 😊
Hi Karen. You are so welcome! Keep safe.
Thank you! To the point, and so informative!

Hi Christine. Thank you for your appreciation. Good luck and keep safe.
Me too, just heading to the basement to get my box, wish me luck!🤞
@@sonayamiller3689 so far 4 out of 9 have sprouted!
Should I place them directly outside, in the balcony with some roof, around end of March, (UK)?
Very useful. Thank you for this.
Hi Jill. Glad it was helpful! Keep safe.
I followed these instructions in the fall and now took them out and they have no green stems or leaves. Are they dead?
Wh- at. If the stems r brown?
Good work my friend good bye
Thanks Christian👍
Thank you so much for your clear and easy instructions. Can I repot them, put them outside on porch for 50/60 degree days, but take them in at nite?
Hi Sandy. Thank you for your appreciation. Yes you can repot them and put them out - bring them in each evening until the risk of frost has passed. Keep safe.
Approximately, how will take the plants to look their best again? Do you the same with any other plants?
Thanks, I enjoyed your teaching.
Hi Marisol. After about 4 weeks the plants are full of leafs again and will start flowering. Keep safe.
Thanks for the tip I will try it next season seen your video to late 🌺🌞
Thanks Monika. Keep safe.
Thank you😊
i would have thought dead and tossed them. glad i saw this. thanks.

Hi Tomas. Our winters are cold and wet getting as low as -10 degC. The cold and wet soil cause ours to rot and die. Keep safe.
@@LearnHow2 I see - it's much more extreme than ours. Our winters are rather dry. Thanks for posting. 👍
Nice information dear friend, stay connected
Thank you, I will.
Did you water them at any time during the storage? Thanks for the video, very helpful!
Thank you! 💕 💕 💕
You are so welcome! Keep safe.
When should I repot them
Repot end winter/earl spring. Keep safe.
When exactly do you take them out of the box? March? April? You cannot plant them outside before end of frost, mostly about 15th May
I pot them up late February then keep them indoors until frost has passed.

Plenty of bright light and good air circulation. Avoid wet soil - slightly moist is ideal. Keep safe.
Hi, if you don't have a greenhouse to put them in, what month would be best to bring them out? I'm in South East UK. Thank you!
Anytime that the risk of frost has past. You could bring out in the day in April but bring in again at night if that helps.
Hi there. Can I as what time of year you start to revive them? I'm in the UK too. Will put them in my loft. Thank you

Thank you for a wonderful video!! Would it be ok to use potting mix with a little 3-4-4 fertilizer and maybe bone meal instead of compost? Thanks!!
I think that would be ok. Keep safe.
What month did you do this?
I start mid to late spring - middle of March here in the UK
How long (months) you store geranium? Which is outside temperature which geranium not tolerate?
I store mine from October to March. Generally they do not like temperatures below freezing but cold damp conditions can also cause rotting. Keep safe.
am I doing this every year with the same plant?
Yes. But at some point it will be better to start with new plants. Keep safe.
My geraniums are in a flower bed. Can I just cut them down and cover it with mulch instead of digging them out and store in a box? I am in zone 7 in the USA.
Thanks.
Hi Yasin. That sounds ok to me for your region. Keep safe.
Do you find that when your replant the next season that they are larger and more robust?
Yes. They grow lager each year. Keep safe.
Interesting but zero info on when you should perform this task and how often you should water after replanting ?
Begin in early spring. Water if the top of the soil starts to feel dry.
