- I always get asked if petunias can be propagated in late summer even though they have blooms on them and can they be overwintered. The short answer is yes! This is going to be the first video in a series that shows me rooting cuttings of petunias with blooms and then overwintering them so that we can take more cuttings next spring and save all kinds of money.

I don't know why I never did this before. I knew petunias can root any time. I have always done the seed method. Save the seeds and start again next year. Problem with that is a lot of these special petunias are hybrids, and the seeds are not true to the original colour. So I must try this method. Thanks, Mike.
You're smarter about roots to growing over million of plants and flowers every year, good job, Mike !😉👍🪴🥀🏞🦋
Thanks 👍
I love this! I’m just hardening off a whole batch of stuff I’ve over wintered (Southern Hemisphere) that I can put out now it’s spring. We’ve had a few false starts but next week I can finally start to clear out the 14 trays I have stashed around the house. I can’t go anywhere now without taking cuttings and thanks to your tips and tricks, I’ve been quite successful with most of them.
Sounds like you're off to a great start! Enjoy your summer.
Last year I overwintered mine in the garage (zone 5) until February and then brought them in and say them on the heat vent. Success!
Great idea, Angie!
Did you take your cuttings and then put them straight into garage for over winter storage or did you take cuttings and then leave them outside like this video until they took root?
I kept them in the garage by a shaded window to encourage roots, not blooms , also due to a lack of space inside. In February when I brought them inside and added heat and more light , they began putting on a lot of growth from which I was able to take more cuttings.
Hi Mike, got mine growing nicely, took the cuttings 2 weeks ago and they are doing great. Going to try and get them though our winter here in the UK. I’m all for experimenting!!. See you on the next one! Take care, Graham🇬🇧🇬🇧
Let me know how they turn out!
Mike Kincaid will do!! Mike I was watering my Rhododendron and it’s started to flower!! It normally flowers in the spring!! Any ideas if it will flower in the spring? Many thanks Graham.🇬🇧🇬🇧😅
There are many varieties that occasionally put out a few blooms in the fall. It should still have plenty of buds for the spring.
Mike Kincaid ..thanks Mike. Will let you know how it goes, There are a lot of really good looking buds so I’m eager to see what happens!
See you on the next one! Graham
Oh my goodness, you got so much energy! You make watching your videos much fun. Take care.
Thanx to you videos I'm learning how to propagate many things. Some a hust experimental but you can't learn without trying... happy planting
Yep, at some point you have to learn through experience. Glad the videos have been helpful.
I am experimenting with rooting them in water with the flowers on.
Been a week so far and still growing blooms.
So far i have noticed tiny roots emerging
Neat experiment. I'll bet it felt good to see those roots.
I just love the music you play on this intro. Already pulled and discarded my petunias...but no where to over winter anyway.
Well you can enjoy mine!
MIKE time lapse vide of the roots to flowers please
😄 Lol ! "Wait wait wait wait there's more" you're full of surprises!
Too late!!! not this time, I am in zone 3 so no matter what you do, your videos will always be late for me, BUT not so much, I always go to your videos from last year plus 3 months earlier than that, so I am able to keep good track because by today Nov. 16, 2020 we already have 1 month past our first freeze and we have snow in the grown for a month now. I cannot do all you do, but I only track your videos of the plants that I can work here in zone 3. I love you always keep track and there is always a follow up video, you are an awesome youtuber!!! thank you.
I really appreciate the comment, thank you! Glad you are able to work with the timing in your area to make this work for you. Have fun in the garden!
Mike...because of you I was able to root and have my favorite petunias...aka (super) Next year, I wont be shelling out lots of $$$ on these petunias. Thanks for the video. I will be taking cuttings today.
Awesome job, Ms. Claudia!
I always get inspired when I watch your videos. I am going to have to get some cuttings going now.
Gotta love this Mike. Btw, RUclips stopped adding your videos to my feed even though I watched regularly...grrrr. Hate when they mess with my feed like that. So it looks like a binge watch session is in order here. I need to see how the hand is doing.
I'm always here and you know where to find me.
Last year I did this with a black petunia. By spring I had more petunias than I knew what to do with. Trying again with other petunias. Fingers crossed.
Good luck!
Wouldn't a garden of black be amazing!
I'll have to save this little nugget of information till next year, since we have already had our first snow in Colorado.
I’ve taken cuttings from calibrachoa and they survived the winter in a south window. I just didn’t let them flower until I knew they had a good root system first.
Awesome!
Ah!! I see now why mine are failing. I had them in direct sunlight at 9000’. Lesson learned.
Oh yeah, that'll cook them!
Not sure when freezes start I your area, but in Phoenix AZ, zone 9b, I’ve grown beautiful petunias from september through May, outdoors in a pot by my front door in a sheltered area with afternoon shade starting around 1 or 1:30pm ... never covered them during freezes which we have maybe five or six (I think) times during winter, at night ... they looked great the whole time ... they were the purple veined Bordeaux but not the self cleaning, I had to dead head them ... at any rate, I can confirm that they will grow in winter with light and if you keep them from freezing ... I’m going to try different petunia seeds (not self cleaning) every month in Phoenix, outdoors, starting first part of March to see if I can start new petunias every month in my area, in my Arizona greenhouse... I expect some varieties will do better than others.
Great info, thanks! I'm from Phoenix originally and know that you stay much warmer than us here but it can get pretty cold at night where you're at. Do you keep them in the greenhouse through the winter? So nice to be able to grow them during the winter. That would never work here outdoors as we start freezing usually in November in my area.
Thanks Mike. I was successful with probably 80% of my cuttings so I trust I can do this. HOWEVER , I have a new kitten and she's not kenneled 😐 I work nights and apparently, so does she. I came home one morning to little plant carcasses all over the place. Petunias, calibrachoa and coleus. I have a few survivors left to work with, including two chunks of the original petunia plants, in case my dormant ones don't survive, that's producing new growth and 7 calibrachoa cuttings looking strong. Three variety of coleus is down to one so that sucks. She jumped roughly 4 feet to get to them. I did not see that coming 😕
I chose these particular petunias because they're not only beautiful rich colors, (deep royal purple and black cherry), they also had an amazing scent the rest didn't have. I harvested seeds from everything but you know that's a crap shoot there. Keep in mind this was just a drill that I didn't expect to work so well. My thumb is more lime then green 😁 Anyways, I'm carrying on. They're now ontop of the fridge when I'm not around. If she makes that jump, I'm in trouble, she just turned 5 months. 😬
Uh, sounds like you’ve got a rogue cat on your hands 🤣
@@MikeKincaid79 Phoebe the Rogue 😁 She's still up to no good tonight, all black and doing the classic halloween cat pose. I'm just waiting to see her next exploit. The plants seem to be loving the fridge vibes and extra warmth. Fingers crossed 😅
Thanks Mike for a valuable video. We like and grow lots of flower at our place. I will give this a try and let you know how it turns out.
OAG
Have fun with it, Charles!
I love petunias thank you for sharing mine got moldy in my kitchen I didn’t tender than fast enough can I just put these in my garden I live in Florida Saint Pete’s words warm using hormonal and small egg styrofoam containers with potting soil
keck and chin beard are coming in good mike. it just cracked me up when you said you are magic. not expecting that gave me a fine fit of laughter. with all the knowledge that you've hunkered down on, you should be magical. i guess a green thumb starts in the brain!!! have a good one, carmine p.
haha, thought you'd like that one
I like this project! Please do more on this really want to see how it works out I would like to try this. I did some begonia last winter and they did ok
I'll work on it. Got a begonia video coming soon too.
I love your inspiration Mike don’t listen to negative comments they are jealous
I try to glide right past them. Thanks for the positivity JoAnn!
I propagated supertunias last winter in my basement under LED shop lights. I took cuttings off of cuttings, and had a lot of flowers. I put a lot in the garden, and I had enough to give away. I just took cuttings from this year’s garden a few days ago for next spring. I hope I have the same amount of success I had last year.I got this idea from your other petunia video. Where did you get your propagation tote? Thanks, Mike.
It looks like an EarlyGrow 70738. The lowest price I found on them is on Amazon.
My wife found it on Amazon a few years ago.
It's always great to watch your videos so informative. Where can I buy that unit you have the cuttings in?
I got mine on Amazon
I found Black petunias here in Kailua Kona Hawaii and I’m obsessed ! 🖤I want them everywhere 😍
Wow, sounds really cool!
Magic Mike has taught me some magic tricks via youtube!!!I give him that status. Thanks Mike.
Haha, great, what have I done! I'll never live this name down, lol.
You are a Plant Propagation Master. Thank you for the great videos.
Thanks for the compliment, Kenny!
Cool! "I am the magic" 😀😀 you sure are Mike! The petunia cuttings look great....they need so little roots to flower. I don't know where to stick some to propagate them. Not only i don't have space but my house doesn't have proper light either. O well next time. Hugs🤗🤗💙
You can enjoy mine through the winter!
I sure can Mike!
Petunia cuttings, coleus, morning glory, etc. will grow in cuttings. Nothing is impossible. And you don't need to buy again. But yes, potting soil only is what you need.
Thanks for the great video! I am definitely trying this. I do have a question though. Do I just keep repeating this process throughout the winter to have petunias in the Spring? I'm thinking the petunias you start rooting in September/October can't be the same ones you'd plant in the Spring/Summer correct?
Yes they are! LOL. I've done both ways. I've continued to root them through the winter and also just continued to up pot every few months and prune back all winter. I've got many videos about it a few years ago if you search the channel.
@@MikeKincaid79 I will definitely check them out. Thanks so much for getting back to me!
So you're saying you're Magic Mike? :-D I've got some red wave petunias and I think I'm going to have to give this a try!
I did say that, didn't I, LOL.
Yes you did Mike!😂😂
I took cuttings from Hydrangeas in Nov 2018. Just before a frost. Next spring. They will be ready to set out.
Awesome! Glad they rooted for you.
@@MikeKincaid79 Getting ready to do some more.
nice man good work. love your videos. hope things going well with your finger.
I closed the book on the finger, so to speak, after my final follow up appointment last Thursday.
Looks like I need to buy a bigger house😅. I already repotted and took inside some blooming annuals (zone 4) and we just got hit with a snow storm (Manitoba). I thought about your petunia video and taking some inside, but I don't have the $ right now for all the grow lights, a shelf to store them all winter long. I'm limited to light from my windows.
Snows is melting again, petunias are still alive, but not very nice anymore, so I think I'll save myself the trouble for now.
I will however take cuttings from supertinuas that I'll buy as early as possible next spring and keep them in the window for a month or so... (This year we had frost till 1st week of june, so there's some time to grow indoors before it's warm enough.
Wow, snow already! Too cold for my blood.
@@MikeKincaid79 Ikr. It's not normal for this time of year. Got dumped on us last Thursday and Friday. Province declared a state of emergency because tens of thousands without power, water, or phone. They are Still working on restoring power for people, and they say it may take a few days yet. That's over a week without power. For some..it's crazy
"It's not magic guys..I am!" Ah ah ah my husband thinks I'm going mad laughing out loud like this 🤣🤣
LOL, glad you're having a good time, Rosie!
I've had petunias blooming in my barrels on my from porch in Nov. Looks like I may??? have a different situation this Fall. Good to know I can have petunias bloom throughout the winter indoors :)
Oh yeah, they are fabulous bloomers indoors through the winter. Did you see part 2: ruclips.net/video/ed2SiNM1Uzs/видео.html
Love it. Maybe this time I will try it .Thanks Mike.
Have fun!
Mike! Can I take cuttings at the beginning of the summer and get flowers off them in the same summer? I bought three or four fancy-schmancy expensive petunias from Spring Hill, etc, but only one or two of each variety. So I'm hoping to multiply them immediately.
Yes! Absolutely. It will take some time but all good things do.
Good morning from England,
I was just wondering if you still have those petunias and how did they do over winter?
Love your channel 😃
Susie 😃
I made several videos through the winter. If you go to my main channel page and click videos and then scroll down, you should be able to find them. I just posted a video a couple days ago of a hanging basket I made with some of the petunias. I'll also have a video out soon of propagating the petunias this spring that I got through the winter from last fall.
Mike Kincaid found them 😃👍 thank you 😊
Totally gonna try this today with my supertunias. Did you use rooting hormone?
Yes, but they root well without it too.
Mike Kincaid thx for your super quick response. Much appreciated!
Thanks for educating us.
I did exactly this a few weeks ago. First time trying. Now to figure out the lights.. 🤔
You can use regular fluorescent bulbs if you have a fixture. They're pretty inexpensive too.
Mike Kincaid thank you!
After I dip my petunias Dems in rooting hormone can I propagate them outside in my garden maybe with some presidency or lightly over them in a carton?🌸🌴🎄
Mike, wouldn't it be simpler and less time consuming, no wintering, if you would start petunias from seeds?
The downside to seedlings is that you will lose your varieties. The blooms will not be the same as the plants you bought. You would have to take cuttings to get clones of the parent plants and get the same blooms. You can do seeds but start them early on, like in January. I have a video series about this here: ruclips.net/video/7eEOgKVySGg/видео.html
@@MikeKincaid79 Many thanks, I'm learning so much from you. Thanks for all your videos!
"The rooting medium is not magic, guys, I am!" LOL Well, hello there 'Magic Mike'! Sorry, but that's one I couldn't resist. We've had some really hard killing frosts here already, 21 degrees Fahrenheit for overnight lows. However, I did order lots of different varieties of seeds today! This is the time of year that I check for clearance sales in the garden centers. I'm always on the look-out for potting mix in the large bags. I purchased 74 (that's all they had) of the compressed bricks of potting mix (they each rehydrate to 2.25 cubic ft.) and I only paid $1each. I'm getting ready for next spring.
Smart Gardener!
I like to buy my potting mix during the winter months. The bags are a bit cheaper and let's face it, since when does potting mix expire?
I meant to tell you I live in Saint Pete Florida so it’s 75 to 79 here in December can I propagate my petunias in a cartons and take them outside in my garden with may be a light press and seal over then lightly
Yeah, that should work just fine.
I had no idea that you could do that. And Once again thank you for letting me in on that little secret, Now I will have to go get me some petunias and start doing that. I love it
Have fun!
so yeah no info about overwintering? bugs are a huge problem, please help
Tons of info about overwintering. Just search the channel.
Great video! Thanks for this! I’m definitely gonna give this a try.
Thanks, Joy!
Mike I'm trying this out! I got a clear Tupperware containers to keep them in. How long do I leave the lid on?? I don't know if I should take it off or not!
As soon as they've got roots, you can start slowly opening the lids to provide more and more air flow.
@@MikeKincaid79 thanks Mike! You should've seen me staring at this Tupperware like it would explode if I took the lid off 😂 Fingers crossed!
Haha, don't leave it on too long or the humidity can eventually promote rot.
@@MikeKincaid79 Ok so my first bunch failed. I didn't have a grow light and they weren't getting all that much light, so that may have been the issue. So I bought a grow light, I've taken more cuttings and they're back in the clear tupperware with the lid on. I used the grow light the first day and it looks like it got too hot in there. How long should I leave the grow light on, and what intensity? I don't want to burn them up into little crispy critters. Thanks!
Thanks for the video, very informative and you crack me up!
petunias just awsome to look and buy but when handling them just like babies especially in a very warm areas like mine in malaysia...with usefull tips given I may get better luck next time..insyaaAllah..thanks
Keep trying and good luck!
You're so cool and even very good looking!
Um, I like to see how you keep them through the winter months. I have to consider my electricity bill too.
LED grow lights
Mike, i have plant light fixture down in my basement, but the bsmt will be around 50 degrees during winter. ..would that be OK? BTW, who is your cameraman or woman...they do a great job.
I'm the camera man, editor, producer, and actor, lol. 50 degrees will be fine. They can handle cold weather, just won't grow very fast but that's ok if you're just trying to preserve the genetics through the winter.
So exciting!! Cant wait!!
"The rooting medium is not magic - I am!" LOL
I just couldn't help myself.
I suck at taking cuttings. I've tried Salvia, Euphorbia (1 out of 15 struck out of pure luck) and I even failed willow O.o
Oh man! You need to watch more videos here.
You’ve created a monster 😂 I’m trying to propagate everything!
Yes! Another victim, haha
I hear that! 😁
@@MikeKincaid79 😂😂 nice
Will this also work with callibricoa (sp)?
I loved petunias. I thought they were beautiful. But, towards the end of the summer, I thought the stems were kind of gross -- just thick with gnats that got stuck there and couldn't get free.
All true
Is it worth the effort to start from seed. I spread seeds from my petunias this year. Maybe something will sprout come spring.
I just like to take cuttings. With seed you get genetic diversity so you never know what colors you will get so that can be fun.
@@MikeKincaid79 i had some of the blackest blooms. Also white in the same basket. I took seeds from both colors. They were the only petunias around me.
Trying this for the first time.. have 30 different colors and sizes. Do i have to have a cover? Where should i put them inside? What type of lights? Natural or fake?
You will need a cover for humidity. You can use artificial lights. I have multiple videos on the subject, you should check out the channel and you'll get tons of info about this.
Thanks mike I need this video good luck
Did you spray water these cuttings while they were in that propagation box?
No but if they get too hot inside and start to wilt then you may need to.
QUESTION: New to your channel, so apologies if you've shared this multiple times! :-) Can you link and/or info for the vented plastic box you're using? Thanks!
Hi Mike, does it really matter having the cover to protect the humidity? I have tried to propagate a bunch of petunia cuttings, the first batch, i put them under a tree shade and the second batch i put it indoor. Both of them were soaked well with plant starter solution, before planting and after planting into the soil, but all of them were dead and rotten in just a matter of a week. I am not sure whether it is because i do not put the cover, the soil was too wet, or the quality of the cuttings was not good?
I'm currently working on another video about this and it should be out soon. Hopefully it will help.
I like that little propagation tote
My wife found it on Amazon a couple years ago.
@@MikeKincaid79 the vents and size is perfect for small spaces, projects.
Great video
Living in Florida I can ONLY grow them in the “winter” as they die as soon as the heat kills them in April
Now that’s interesting. I’m so unfamiliar with Florida weather but It would be really cool to grow them outdoors all winter. Too cold for that around here.
Mike, what happened to the fish with all those babies, did you Separate them or you were not able to
I may have another surprise for you if you're interested in another fish update!
@@MikeKincaid79 Sure is, please do it as soon as possible 🤗
Hi, in my place summers is very hot, reaches upto 45⁰c, how do I save petunias at this temp? Thank u.
Shade and water.

I planted apple seeds in my kitchen window now it is about 5 inches tall I need to replant it in a night pot what do I need for this Process
A pot and some potting soil.
I would love to see the end result after grow lights through the winter!?!?!??!
