This game is definitely a masterpiece by Capcom but the AI can literally be WAY too good. They block every attack about 90% of the time and brutally destroy you (ESPECIALLY MAGNETO HOLY MOTHER OF GOD)
TheDARKYOSHI64 You speak the truth about this game, especially Magneto. In my opinion, I think its "sequel," Marvel Super Heroes, was more balanced in comparison.
+Loader2K1 I felt the same when when X-men vs street fighter came out. There were some balancing issues. Thankfully when the sequel, Marvel Super Heroes vs Street fighter came out they balanced out the game play more. Same thing for Darkstalkers. The first 5 opponents were easy until you got to Rikuo and Sasquatch then they would block every punch and kick so you would have to rely a lot of spamming fireball attacks in order to throw them off. Pyron IMO was a broken character. They son of a gun was cheap in all ways like Gill from Street Fighter 3. That guy blocked everything, spammed his fireballs like crazy, teleport and then would throw you around each team he was near you. Thankfully Capcom fixed that issue with Night Warriors and you actually were able to get a hit on him easier.
I revisited the game recently and was blown away by how insanely overpowered Magneto was. He forcefield alone was bad enough. But that power grab or whatever was insane.
This game was just designed to steal your money if you played solo lmao. even on easy mode these guys just wont get hit its really not fun. I want to love this game as much as the others but jesus... all they fucking do is block everything. The only way I can beat this game is spam HP+HK with Iceman lmao. I can 8 difficulty every other marvel vs. game of the arcade series, but this one is just... so frustrating. 1 difficulty all the fucking do is block, hit you twice, then you have no hp left after like 2 hits, then it feels like you need to climb a damn mountain to even lay a single hit on them, but you land 2 connecting punches and you barley scratched them. Ugh.

You know what would be awesome, if Capcom made new versions of COTA and Marvel Super Heroes. The former specializing in X-men characters and the latter specializing in non X-men Marvel characters.
Funny how Capcom actually used the 90s cartoon voice actors in these fighting games back then considering how cheap they are with voice actors now adays.
Cyclops; one of my favorite X-Men, if not then my most favorite. Wish Capcom would remake or update this game cause it fucking rocked (And still does.) back in da day.
Seems like Cyclops relied on his 'optic-blast' a lot during the coarse of this game. But you know, that's one of the reasons why he is the leader of the X-Men.
Nathan M. I take it you're referring to the SJW poison found in comics today? Kinda ironic. Reading manga over American comics, is like buying a riceburner after WWII. And yes, I'm guilty of that.
Edward Gaines Yup, that's the poison in reference alright. As someone who did read comics as a kid, it's been kind of mind-blowing seeing how many of the great writers of my childhood were loony tunes political extremists the whole time.
Man this game looked so good. I felt like the later VS games sped up the animations too much and you lost the impact of the sprites in favor of faster gameplay.
I remember this game. My favorite character was Wolverine, and the most annoying is Juggernaut. I almost always losing vs his Earthquake. But even when I was able to defeat him with Wolvering or Storm, Magneto just pisses me off with his shields that block my ult many times and his psycho waves. SO I never beat this game wne I was a child :D.

I remember the first time I played this game was 1998 in a hotel arcade that my grandfather took me too. It was right next to a swimming pool and my pop pop wanted to chill in the jacuzzi area for a while. I hated swimming back then so he gave a 5 dollar bill to one of the desk clerks and asked for 5 dollars worth of quarters, and the mad woman actually gave it to him, lol. When we arrived to the arcade there was no one else there, I had the entire thing to myself with 5 dollars worth of quarters, lol. Looking back they had some real classics in there. Virtua Fighter, Tekken, House of the Dead, and of course X-Men: Children of the Atom. That was one of my most precious childhood memories. God, to be a 90's kid in an arcade and have it all to yourself with what seemed like an assload of quarters (I was 8 years old). That was fucking incredible.
I wished Capcom had made at least two more one on one fighting games with the X-men before moving on to the Vs. Series. The only one we had after Children of the atom was Marvel Super Heroes, but the only X-men that return from Children of the atom were: Wolverine, Pyslocke, Juggernaut and Magneto. I like to consider Mutant Academy as a spiritual sequel to Children Of The Atom. :)
Theshark15z there was another one called x-men vs street fighter which is considered a sequel to marvel super heroes. There's also marvel super heroes vs street fighter which has a few x-men characters.
A big roster is actually good because everyone can feel like no one was left out and everyone can play with all there favorite characters they grew up with thats why MVC2 is the best
I really miss old school capcom fighting games like this. I always thought it was so cool how the Capcom Marvel Character fighting games always looked like they were just so incredibly inspired off of comics just in general. The way the characters are designed and animated. There is a little bit of that charm that is lost once the games started to move in a 3D direction.

looking back the sega saturn port is really good compared to the arcade i would of thought there would have been a big difference but it seems the saturn really was bad at 3d but excellent at 2d
The Saturn was specifically built to be the ultimate 2d console. It lost the console wars because 2d was out and 3d was in but it beats the playstation in every 2d port you'll find.
Joystick downwards + short-kick (x2) + strong-kick (CPU falls down...) immediately, execute on the joystick, onwards (x2) + short-punch+middle-punch+short-kick...Cyclops execute a 'Bulldozer' grip (dunno exactly the name for that movement). Itlooks cool when succeed...
yeah...a bit wrong description for this special grab. Bulldozer or something like that, press forward 2 times + strong punch, strong kick at the same time...that's it. Pretty nice cuz they always ''buy'' it and fell for it!
Wow kid, great done! When I watched as you kept missing Psyloche (typo I dont care enough) and almost got your ass handed to her I never thought you where actually pretty good at this.

looking back the sega saturn port is really good compared to the arcade i would of thought there would have been a big difference but it seems the saturn really was bad at 3d but excellent at 2d
The Saturn was specifically built to be the ultimate 2d console. It lost the console wars because 2d was out and 3d was in but it beats the playstation in every 2d port you'll find.
The Dreamcast version is excellent. Currently, I’m enjoying Pandora Box-styled experience. Highly recommended. No compromises.
This arcade got Cyclops right unlike the FOX movies. Now Xmen 97
The Juggernaut is huge in this game
MrTmoney12889 Big-ass thighs!!!
Official name is GENE SPLICE. Even game guides called it as such, though Capcom simply renamed it RISING UPPERCUT in XvsSF control marquees.
this game will kick your ass too it was brutal back in the day on your quarters
Joystick downwards + short-kick (x2) + strong-kick (CPU falls down...) immediately, execute on the joystick, onwards (x2) + short-punch+middle-punch+short-kick...Cyclops execute a 'Bulldozer' grip (dunno exactly the name for that movement). Itlooks cool when succeed...
+Ismael Ponce Is that they move where grab you and perform the "Bulldog" move on you??
yeah...a bit wrong description for this special grab. Bulldozer or something like that, press forward 2 times + strong punch, strong kick at the same time...that's it. Pretty nice cuz they always ''buy'' it and fell for it!

You can only use Nightcrawler, Scarlet Witch, Toad & Lady Deathstrike when using the "X-men Hyperscan Gamer" system.
This game has my favorite version of Cyclops' costume.
if you know wolverines healing combo he is OP and his uppercut rules
Wow kid, great done!
When I watched as you kept missing Psyloche (typo I dont care enough) and almost got your ass handed to her I never thought you where actually pretty good at this.
As a little kid back in 96 or 96 my local walmart had this arcade game and I played it literally every time I went I got to Juggernaut a few times but never could beat him that's why I'm watching now...I want to play this on PC or PS3 does anyone know how to? I tried to torrent on kickass but none worked
This is the only CotA I recognize
11:27 my man Jugger just got fucking served WWE style by Cyclops
I didn't remember Gene Splice being able to do so many hits...
You must've had the difficulty set to easy. I dont remember The game being so easy to beat. I remember the cpu doing some crazy combos at the arcades.
Optic blast forever 😀😀😀😀💥💥💥💥
