Same here, I am impressed. I have never build even a box! No idea about using tools either. Never done anything like this ever, but I am going to get the tools and try to make a coop!
Very nice looking chicken coop. But in my opinion to make it the ultimate chicken coop it needs to be setup for the deep litter method. Basically you just need it to have 12-18” of space at the bottom for the litter to build up over time. This is the best and easiest way to keep chickens in a stationary coop design. The way it works is you start with a layer of dry wood shavings to cover the floor of the coop. Once that gets soiled you just cover it with another layer of shavings. You continue doing this for as long as your coop has the space for the litter to build up. The beauty of this method is the carbon (wood shavings) absorb and offset the manure load eliminating any smell and composting at the same time. I used this method when I started out with chickens several years ago and went a full 18 months before cleaning the litter out of my coop that housed 20+ hens. You could open my hen house and not even smell a chicken. And if you did it was time for a layer of shavings. When cleaning out the litter it just smells like dirt. Great compost for the garden. I would recommend cutting the bottom 12-18” off of you access door and making it a separate door that only opens when it is time to clean out the litter. This also works outside in their run area. You might start with a nice grassy spot for them but they will quickly destroy all of that grass. Once that happens get some free wood chips from a local tree company or saw mill and put that down in their run areas. I put a heavy layer down to start with then just mix the manure in as it gets soiled. That way I didn’t need to have a pile of Woodchips somewhere. Use these methods and enjoy your backyard chickens without the smell of the chickens. Good luck!! Thanks for sharing.
agree. i built my deep litter coop in 2017 and have never needed to clean it out. i just take out compost for the garden and add more straw. also his coop doesn't have decent roosting bars. i hope he retrofits some.
Wonderful tip! That is the method I'm interested in. Lots to learn about chickens! Where did you find the plans for your coop build and are there any chicken keeps books you'd suggest?
@@questions_galore I got everything from RUclips videos. Joel salatin is on I would definitely recommend on RUclips and the books he wrote. The coop I built wasn’t anything complicated. Basically I just made sure I had room in the bottom of the hen house for at least a foot of bedding to build up and still able to open the access door without any bedding falling out. Good luck with the chickens. They are the gateway “drug” into farming. We started with six. That quickly grew to to over 40 chickens ducks goats pigs cows and now horses lol.
doesn't this stink or rot? And how do you then use that composting for the garden without cleaning it out? Eventually won't it choke your chickens to death? LOL
This whole vlog made me smile 😃 From the story, to the build, to the clever name, I enjoyed it immensely! Obviously, you are an amazingly talented designer and builder, and it was so heartwarming to see the way your wife melted and played with the chickens. 🐔 🐓🐣🐥 May you have many happy chicken days!
While cedar might seem like a sturdy and visually appealing choice, it's important to consider the potential risks it poses to our feathered friends. Cedar contains natural oils and aromatic compounds that can be harmful to chickens, particularly in enclosed spaces like a coop. These compounds can irritate their respiratory systems and lead to health issues over time, even without the use of cedar shavings. Additionally, cedar can be abrasive and uncomfortable for chickens to perch on or walk around. For the well-being of your flock, I'd recommend opting for safer materials like untreated pine or fir for coop construction.
Another tip: leave at least a 1' overhang on the roof for ventilation and air flow, use 1/4 " caged chicken wire to cover the gaps in the rafters to keep snakes out.
Beautiful coop! I’d love to see it with the run completed. I’ve wanted chickens for years and given today’s “egg-conomy,” it might be time and I would LOVE a coop just like your Coup da Villa!

Omg this is the prettiest coop I've ever seen! You did AMAZING! I have been researching chickens myself so I've been trying to find something i can build pretty easy. I wish i could build one like this. Thanks for sharing!!
First time viewer. We've had chickens since right before Covid 2020 and started out with Silkies as well. You have made THE BEST DIY chicken coop I've ever seen online. I 💔 every single thing about it from the very entertaining video, the design, color, cedar accents, the interior and the name, of course. You should get the Best Hubby award. I think you're a professional framer or contractor compared to the majority of us watching. I made a cute one myself but nothing compared to yours I definitely will be tuning in to watch more of your videos. Your wife is truly blessed and so are those chickens. 💔🐥🐓🐔
If I had the hubby like you, not only I would've approved your efforts, I would expect from you more of such surprises, or asked you to help me with my own projects. You are great!!!
This is the first video I have seen of yours. I was drawn in by the picture of the chicken coop and now you have yourself a new subscriber. Great work and excellent job explaining how to do each step. I was looking for some ideas for remaking my chicken coop and I think I found a couple.
Just finished the video, you did a beautiful job, love the coop and the name. Really loved how you explained everything, you make it look easy and doable. First video I've seen of yours, you have a new subscriber, can't wait to binge on your other content. Thank you!
I never comment on things but this is just so amazing I had to! Sir , your craftsmanship and attention to detail is truly incredible. I am a stay at home mama of four working on my little homestead and building things for my chicks soon to be chickens and this was so inspiring to watch! What a blessed wife and those chickens are going to live their lives 😊
Love the coop! Good Solid build. I’m super jealous!!! I’d use 1/2in galvanized hardwire cloth on the windows instead of plexiglass and add more windows on the other walls for ventilation. Chickens are fine in the winter, they’re more built for it than heat… it’s the heat you need to worry about. Predator locks are imperative. Raccoons, possums & squirrels can open simple locks. I put down a 2ft predator apron made of Galvanized Welded Wire Garden Fence, 2 in. x 4 in. Mesh from tractor supply around the outside of the run so predators couldn’t dig under the run and wrapped the run in the same. Everything with the coop is Secured with hardware cloth & added a wildlife camera & lights for night predators. I learned the hard way (and I live in a residential area where I didn’t think I had to worry as much) However you’re obviously an expert and have probably figured all this out! Again.. beautiful coop! Good luck!! ❤ (PS chicken math is a thing 🐓 🐓 🐓= 🐓 🐓 🐓 🐓 🐓 🐓 🐓 😂
It is a great coop, but I am totally with you on a raccoon proof lock on that door and wire behind that plexiglass. The heartbreak when we lost 2 of our 3 ducks is not anything I would wish on someone.
Take another look at the finished coop; he did put hardware cloth on the window opening so he can prop them open for ventilation without intruders. I do agree with you about the lock hardware, it needs to be something a racoon or squirrel can't open. Sliding bar locks are child's play for them.
What a beautiful job! That coop is absolutely gorgeous ❤️ My chickens..(and rooster) would love a building like this. We’ve looked a prebuilt coops….some we’re totally cool, some unimpressive, but all of them were ridiculously expensive. We built our own. Simple coops. But this is very impressive. I’m keeping this for hubby and I to do a build. I am also going to share this video with a few other backyard farmer friends. We have 7 hens, and are looking to add a few more. Silkies are very cute, have very sweet personalities, and are a lot of fun to have around. I’ve got Delawares, Plymouth Rocks, ISA Browns, Orpingtons, and Easter eggers which are not a breed per se, but they lay blue, pink and greenish blue eggs. Very pretty. In our original batch, we also got two roosters….surprise, surprise! One had to go! They didn’t get along. We gave him to a farm, where he is living his best life ever. ❤️❤️❤️
I'm looking to upgrade from my starter coop this year, and this is a perfect video! Most show the finished project, which I'm not crafty enough to deconstruct. I needed a video just like this!
ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT-you are talented no wonder your wife had NO complaint about the coup! I am not a fan of ‘ modern’ angles (the roof) but it is obvious you have the ability to build any style of architecture in this vein. I subscribed-can’t wait to see your next project!!!
Wonderful job! You are a gifted person in more ways than one! The video is superb, your surprise for your wife is very cute and I love how you had her say yes to the Silkies!
This is the most beautiful chicken coop l hve ever seen in my life .. the Ritz Carlton of chicken coops. You are very talented .. l want to get some chickens but l cannot afford a coop like that .. Again …It is absolutely beautiful what you built there … Your wife is blessed to hve a guy like you 👍
Nice build! I did something similar but a bit less fancy. I sheathed the inside with the plastic sheeting like you see on the walls of a public restroom so we can wash the whole thing down, which we do once or twice a year. The floor is also the same plastic sheeting over plywood, but removable through the clean-out door to make it easier to dump the pine shavings we use as bedding. I was most interested in seeing how you were going to address weatherproofing the hinge side of the lid of the laying boxes, since I have a problem with leaks even with a drip strip above it. How is yours holding up to the rain? It doesn't look like you did anything different than I have.
We tacked a strip of heavy poly sheeting over the hinged section. Works like a charm, even in our cold Maine winters when I have to shovel off the top... I just use caution not to tear it.
Wow!!! What an amazing coop!! I would have been jumping and screaming with excitement!! What a shop with every fun tool, too! Brilliant job!! I need to find a man like YOU!! Excellent workmanship 👌👍
Any video released and any build is a definite thumbs up even before I have seen it. Feels like a long awaited highly anticipated movie, race to grab a snack, head phones on, feet up, no disturbances, ready to roll!
Wow that is just the best coop I have ever seen!! I’m the one that likes chooks my hubby not so keen. We’ve only got 2 as a result! I would just love your workshop!! Thank you for sharing your awesome coop design and build! 😊
Hello. I found your channel this evening and just watched the this episode. Just wondering when there will be a follow up video with the other updates, run, fence, etc? I will now be checking out your other videos as well. Great job, a new subscriber from Ohio,
OMG! I love everything about this coop, this video, all of it!!! Luckiest chickens ever! This coop is 100 times better than my first apartment! The cedar accent wall is fantastic. Love the name too. There actually isn't anything not to love about this. You have incredible talent. You and your beautiful wife are just the best. Love her reaction to the chicks. Hope you update us on Patricia and the gang when they move in.
That was perfection! Wow! What an amazing build. Attention to detail on the material you decided to use was absolutely beautiful! I’ve done a quick little one day chicken coop build, had to get rid of it because I moved. Now that I’m at my new house I’m ready to tackle this project again. Truly inspired by this build! A+ 😎
I love the two depths of the cedar planks! I want to do my bedroom wall like it. I love stripes and it reminds me of that. Beautiful coop! Great video that I believe I could follow to build my own coop…one day!😀
Nice build! Smart thinking painting ahead and the shims are a game changer. Consider trying using a router for cutouts, super simple and clean. Lol, hard to say no when she had the cute lil guy in her hands. 👍
Im planning my build now. Plan on installing hardware cloth on bottom of run and then cover thant up with horse stall mats. Those mats are heavy so should keep everything (hopefully) out. We are a desert location so we have lots of snakes, scorpions, coyotes, hawks, owls, pretty much everything than can cause injury to chickens. Also think have their "coop" raised up off the ground like yours is an excellent idea. Thanks for your videos!
Very pretty. I admit to some concerns about a couple things: how is the ventilation in your coop? Adequate air flow is vital for any birds and I didn’t notice you installing any vents to keep the air moving inside. Once your chicks have feathered out, you don’t have to worry about keeping them warm, you just need to keep them fed and dry. Your power assisted nest box cover is cool, but I would still put a latch on it for those high-wind days that could trigger it opening without a human hand.
Depending on where they live they may need to provide heat for the chickens since they are Silkies. Silkies are a more fragile breed of chicken - they need to be protected from the cold and wet weather.
The windows did have chicken wiring underneath the glass and the windows open. He didn’t address that he had done that but you can see it in the video. Maybe there are other vents or holes. Great point!
Very nice coop. I was looking for ideas for a future build, and this has most of them (I need to integrate straw/feed storage in mine). Our coop stays very clean, because the velociraptors live outside in an apricot tree, and only use the coop for laying - regardless of weather!
I'm curious about the dimensions of your coop and about how much it cost to build? My wife wants me to build a coop and showed me your video to show what she wanted.
I'm dumbfuzzled about the dimensions also, no mention of the square feet or anything.. I'm expecting 300 in materials to build a simple coop with a tin roof. The craftsmanship and all the coatings would push this build over my budget but it sure is eye candy to the viewing audience.
Good to see someone else that knows the value of good tools. Not alot of Bosch around tool sheds and job sites anymore. Still is and always will be my go to Brand of Tools... also, nice Chicken Coop lol 🤟
Our coops aren’t as cool looking but they do have names, “the Roost Bar” our rooster pin. “The Hen Den” obvious, and “duckingham palace”. We recently added another coop for our new flock, but haven’t come up with a name yet.
That may be the nicest chicken coop I have ever seen. Nice work. Like my grandfather, you are a master carpenter and that is amazing. New fan/sub here.
Blimey forget the chickens 🐔i'll move in myself 🤣🤣🤣 I think honeybun 😇 is enjoying playing with those chicks more than you are 🤩🤩🤩 Stay Safe 😷😷 Barry (ENG)
Your carpentry is on point, but the coop could have been a bit bigger, but you did raise the bar on coop building, I'm building a chicken bunker, it's for hurricane season, building it out of steel reinforced block and concrete. My stucco finishing and finishing in general is up there, so you got some competition lol...great job on your coop build
I know I’m seeing this a year or so after but never build your egg hutch door on the top, chickens are aware of predatory birds and when you have the door on top it’s the same thing for them. The lid opening can scare them crazy. I recommend to anyone always put the door on the front to have it drop open.
That is just beautiful!!!! You are an excellent builder and clearly must work in construction with all your tools. You could make a living building these - especially now that eggs are $4.00 a dozen!!!
That’s beautiful. I’m making mine this spring. It’s going to be a log cabin; literally! Lots of black bears/ wolves in our forest. Needs to be STRONG‼️
This looks like a great chicken coop but after watching a LOT of chicken coop builds and watching and learning a LOT about chickens them selves (I also have experience helping a friend of mine with his chickens) I would not call this “ultimate” chicken coop. There’s a lot more you could have done better to benefit the chickens themselves.
Don't about were you live. But here in the south. The color you pick will make the chicken coop very hot in the summer. The layering hens are Longhorn Easter Eggers Rhode Island Reds Plymouth Rock. These are just a few of the best laying hens . Do silkies aren't going to give you much as far as eggs go. They're more like just for pets. They sure are cute though your chicken coop is very beautiful.
Hahahahaaa! I love it!! “I guess It’s easier to ask forgiveness than permission.” My wife doesn’t like change and I have to do the same thing. When she leaves, I get to work. She’s angry for a moment, but always appreciates what I’ve done later.
Hey there buddy I have built a few coops in my time, to help make your floor of you coop easier to clean and last longer add Starlight board to the floor. Great looking coop!!!!
I think it is absolutely beautiful. I would have thought more ventilation would be better, however you are making an open space later for them to enjoy the day’s fresh light👍
That is Luxurious ! Fantastic job ! Wish my husband was handy.I might be able to pull it of,but much slower than you did,I'm not a contractor or carpenter, but built a thing or two growing up with Dad.
My husband built our coop out of pallets with a metal roof and when he was a work I finished the inside with used redwood paneling we got from a friend. So he named it the Hen House Hilton. Can't wait to refill with chicks again this year.
not sure i could pull this off even with the tricked out workshop, but wow am i enjoying your enthusiasm and the end result is amazing. Subscription earned
Beautiful coop! You did a great job. Don't forget to use 1/2" hardware cloth with long pins around the perimeter of the run when you build. That should keep any burrowing animals from digging under. Check out Carolina Coops for information on the run and the perimeter protection.

LOL
@@zia_kat How do you get it out for composting without cleaning it out?
Wow! CONGRATULATIONS on your lovely chicken coop! You must be loved so much by wife & 🐔 🐔 🐔 chickens. Great work with an awesome attitude to match. Now start making them for everyone. You'll be making many families & chickens happy.
Thank you so much
Absolutely incredible! I want one!!!!! loved the video. You are so lucky with all those amazing tools, especially the laser one to cut the letters, OMG how cool is that!
I'm so glad your mailbox short showed up in my feed this morning. After watching I came to your channel, scrolled thru videos looking for the mailbox build and saw this one first. I watched and hit the subscribe button because the coop build was SO impressive. I love watching people that take pride in their work, build things. Great job and I'm so happy your wife fell in love with the chicks. Obviously y'all are good people-big hearts!
Fantastic! You are such a master coop builder, what a lucky honey-bunny!😄 Great personality, liked on the video the minute you said you figured asking for forgiveness is better than asking for permission!😂🤣😂😂😂🤣😂, knew this was gonna be a fun watch! Who wants any other kind of coop after watching yours. Everyone should have a hubby that can build anything like you!
Omg this is the prettiest coop I've ever seen! You did AMAZING! I have been researching chickens myself so I've been trying to find something i can build pretty easy. I wish i could build one like this. Thanks for sharing!!
Very nicely done. I like that you kept the human aspect in there during the build. Cuz we all know it doesn't go as smooth as it does on TV
Anyone who works as hard as you do, should have the desires of their heart. Enjoy your chickens. They are a interesting bird.
Thanks for the Highlight. It was my pleasure to watch you at your craft. Kudos!
Welcome aboard!!!!!
Thank you!
Me too. New subscriber and binge watch to catch up!❤️👍🏻🐣
I never comment on things but this is just so amazing I had to!
Absolutely beautiful. Not only are you a carpenter, but you are also an artist too. Awesome video. Thanks for sharing.
My husband and I have been talking about getting chickens, and this would be perfect. I'm going to share this with him right now.
Wonderful job! You are a gifted person in more ways than one! The video is superb, your surprise for your wife is very cute and I love how you had her say yes to the Silkies!
Thank you so much !
Silkies may be not great for much but when you need the cutest chicks to win over your wife they come through in the clutch (pun intended).
This is the most beautiful chicken coop l hve ever seen in my life .. the Ritz Carlton of chicken coops.
You are very talented .. l want to get some chickens but l cannot afford a coop like that ..
Again …It is absolutely beautiful what you built there …
Your wife is blessed to hve a guy like you 👍
Wow - sowas geniales habe ich noch nie gesehen! Grandiose Idee, phantastische Umsetzung, großartige Handwerkskunst!!!
I love it like I love the shed. Turned out gorgeous and so happy your wife fell in love with the chicks
Wow!!! What an amazing coop!! I would have been jumping and screaming with excitement!! What a shop with every fun tool, too! Brilliant job!! I need to find a man like YOU!! Excellent workmanship 👌👍
Outrageously beautiful build. Sooo jealous. Just a thought however, you might need more ventilation when they get bigger or if you add more hens.
Yep. It is awesome. Just needs ventilation.
Ahhh you make that look so easy.....I need your shop.....love how all your tools are organized.
Bart, Another awesome video ! honestly one of my favorite creators
Thank you so much!!!!!! You made my day
@@KomarProject you make my day when you upload lol
Very cool! Love your design plan. My husband said he wished every plan came so detailed! Can't wait to build it.
OMG! Patricia is adorable - and WOW what a gorgeous coop!
Any video released and any build is a definite thumbs up even before I have seen it. Feels like a long awaited highly anticipated movie, race to grab a snack, head phones on, feet up, no disturbances, ready to roll!
That’s a hell of a coop man, it looks amazing.
Great job, a new subscriber from Ohio,
My amazing son built an amazing coop. My friend when she saw it proclaimed it to be Coop De Ville. You're amazing too. God bless.
Ohh will definitely do that. Hopefully will be a follow up video on moving day
Would love to see it again with the adult chickens in it, enjoying the good life!!
Absolutely beautiful. Would love an update on how the chickens enjoy their new home.
Phenomenal job! Run Chicken auto door works really well!
Yes I love it.
Adorable video and will show my son who will be building the bigger coop and run by fall. Wonderful build.
Thank you so much
That was perfection! Wow! What an amazing build. Attention to detail on the material you decided to use was absolutely beautiful!
I’ve done a quick little one day chicken coop build, had to get rid of it because I moved. Now that I’m at my new house I’m ready to tackle this project again. Truly inspired by this build! A+ 😎
Thank you
I love the two depths of the cedar planks! I want to do my bedroom wall like it. I love stripes and it reminds me of that. Beautiful coop! Great video that I believe I could follow to build my own coop…one day!😀
Awesome job on the coop build! 👏 you made it look easy. 💙it.
That’s movie magic for you lol. There was a lot of stress with this one lol
What a great job with the surprise part! She fell in love so fast!
Nice build! Smart thinking painting ahead and the shims are a game changer. Consider trying using a router for cutouts, super simple and clean. Lol, hard to say no when she had the cute lil guy in her hands. 👍
Ya I actually used the router on the windows. Super easy just takes too long for me lol.
Wow that’s is incredible. What you built in just a week would taken me 10 yrs. You are truly a craftsman!
Love your enthusiasm, you have every tool to make this happened, excellent video. Thanks for making it.
Wow !! That is indeed, the Cadillac of coops. Well done!!
Thanks Pinta !!! Really appreciate it
Wow, still watching so haven't seen wifey’s reaction yet. You did an amazing amount of work in 2 days and it looks really well done!
That looks awesome! You always go above and beyond! Love it!!!
Thanks Kim. Much appreciated
Looks amazing! Screen mesh covering each window opening will keep raccoons out. Also rope wrapped around roosting polls helps prevent foot disease. 😊
We did put the mesh in and never heard of the rope. Will have to check it out. Thank you so much
Awesome work on the coop, may the chickens appreciate it and give plenty of eggs 🥚 😀
Double yolk please lol
Ohhh your going to have to let me know what you come up with. I love Hen Den lol
That may be the nicest chicken coop I have ever seen. Nice work. Like my grandfather, you are a master carpenter and that is amazing. New fan/sub here.
Blimey forget the chickens 🐔i'll move in myself 🤣🤣🤣
I think honeybun 😇 is enjoying playing with those chicks more than you are 🤩🤩🤩
Stay Safe 😷😷
Barry (ENG)
Ohh she loves them lol. She come out to the shop everyday to play with them lol
Ur wife is lucky to have u.
Wish I knew this stuff
Wyndmoor PA
Your carpentry is on point, but the coop could have been a bit bigger, but you did raise the bar on coop building, I'm building a chicken bunker, it's for hurricane season, building it out of steel reinforced block and concrete. My stucco finishing and finishing in general is up there, so you got some competition lol...great job on your coop build
Good luck in your life , your courage and videos have inspired me , sorry for your loss , i hope you find a great knew home , god bless moss
Thank you very much!
Can we also see you building the run?!
Ya most likely will be a video on it
thank goodness my chickens dont have internet
That’s beautiful. I’m making mine this spring. It’s going to be a log cabin; literally! Lots of black bears/ wolves in our forest. Needs to be STRONG‼️
Would love to see pictures. That sounds like such a fun build !
Amazing build video! Great job going through all of it and it looks fabulous! Great job! Definitely earned a subscription here. Well done!!!
Wonderful job! You are a gifted person in more ways than one!
Love it. Love the surprise to your wife. Great job. You should make and sell them. I would buy one !! Good video. God Bless.
Hahahahaaa! I love it!! “I guess It’s easier to ask forgiveness than permission.” My wife doesn’t like change and I have to do the same thing. When she leaves, I get to work. She’s angry for a moment, but always appreciates what I’ve done later.
Your wife reminds me of my friend Emily. I am glad she enjoyed the surprise.
She loves them. Thank you 🙏
Oh my gosh what a sweet couple!💕
What an amazing, creative chicken coup builder! 👍
Congrats on your new family adventure🐤.
Thanks so much! 😊
This was a wonderful video! Glad the wife loved it too!
Glad you enjoyed it! She loves it
Incredibly beautiful. Congratulations!!
I absolutely LOVE this coop!! You did an awesome job and thank you so much for showing us how you did it and explaining why.
You are so welcome!
It’s obvious you love building and creating. A true artist and artisan.
Hey there buddy I have built a few coops in my time, to help make your floor of you coop easier to clean and last longer add Starlight board to the floor. Great looking coop!!!!
You just built a whole tiny house....those chickens are living better than many people. That house is awesome!!!!
Bart beautiful job. Can’t wait to see more videos soon my friend. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Keep Making. God bless.
Thanks Jared!! Hope your doing well
Beautiful coop! You did a great job. Don't forget to use 1/2" hardware cloth with long pins around the perimeter of the run when you build. That should keep any burrowing animals from digging under. Check out Carolina Coops for information on the run and the perimeter protection.
So so so Awesome! I would love to have a coop like that ! You are a master craftsman!
LOL your a funny guy.
My husband has surprised me many times building surprises for me. We love chickens!!
Great Coupe Da Ville!!
Thank you so much
