Welcome to the official April Wilkerson RUclips channel. I’m April and I’m the creator of Wilker Do’s. I'm not professional or have any training, so I just pick the project I want to tackle and figure it out step by step. On this channel you will find a variety of content like DIY home improvement, How-To’s, construction and more. - Хобби
Make sure you don’t have more than two doors on your chicken coop… if you have four doors, it becomes a chicken sedan… 😂😂 I’ll show myself out
Ha! I see what you did there. Good one! Thanks for watching.
😂😂😂you're grounded!!😂😂
😂😂
😭
In softer soils I've always been told to have the wire from the bottom buried pointing outwards at a 45° angle to deter predators from digging under the walls. The angle apparently throws them off and discourages them from continuing to dig down. I build walls for a rabbit run using 14-gauge 1-inch mesh rather than hardware cloth because foxes can be extremely determined.
Having the roosts the same height as the nest boxes will lead to hens roosting and soiling the nest boxes.
You should paint the netting black so its easier to see into the coop. Others did it and the result is amazing. Maybe include that in the second video. You have great videos keep them flowing.
i've used black PVC coated hardware cloth in the past to have a cleaner look. As someone mentioned below, it is recommended to bury the hardware cloth that reaches the group at a 45 going out to discourage digging. Predators will start digging near the walls and will continue going deep unless they are hindered by the hardware cloth.
That's a good idea April. I did that in our coop about 20 years ago and it makes a world of difference. I've only had to repaint once in the 20 years.
@@KarmaPollice Or, have dogs roaming the property 24/7. That's the best.
I say this for all your videos, but once again, you built something that's on my list! another April video going into my saved 'to do' videos
Yay! Glad you enjoy my channel. Thanks for watching.
This is a great looking Chicken coop” aka “Chicken Mansion” aka “The Chick Inn”! I’ve been watching your projects come together since 2016 and your passion and creativity has only gotten better. You’re fun too watch and definitely appreciated. Easy on the eyes too!😊.
Thank you and “Happy Thanksgiving” to you and yours.
The dormer roof line really sets this Chicken Mansion apart from other chicken coops. Plus, you have included so many useful features into this design. I can tell a lot of thought went into the planning of this project. Well Done April!!! 👏👍😃
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
Agree! It’s perfect.
Anxiously awaiting the plans upload on your website. I really like this design.
Thank you!
Looks great April
Excelente gracias por compartir saludos bendiciones desde monterrey México 👌
I love your videos. Your joy of live and living comes through every one of them.
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoy them. Thanks for watching.
Absolutely love it. Can’t wait to see the finishing steps!
Thanks! Yes, I love it too. Thanks for watching.
quite inspiring! Always enjoy your builds.
Thank you very much!
Great job guys. Thank you 😊
Thanks for watching!
Really enjoy how it was done from beginning to en! Bravo!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great job lady Great job
Love this!
A luxury hotel for chickens. It's great you have outdone yourself again which is no small feat. Thank you for sharing.👍♥️
Thanks for watching!
Awesome job April! 😃👍🏼👊🏼
Would you mind sharing what your total cost of material was for this project?
This was my thoughts exactly, because if it's $1200 to build I probably need to order a smaller set of plans and work my way up.
April, this is a very nice chicken coop! I like your method of panelized construction. You’ve shared a lot of great ideas. Thanks and have a happy Thanksgiving!
Thank you! You too!
I like seeing teamwork, GV.
Love this!🩷🐓
I love this. I wish I had the yard space for this size coop. Super cute.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
great build April.
your videos gives me some confidence that I can do somethings on my own.
thank you April

Thanks! I'm glad you find my videos useful. Thanks for watching.
I have been looking at building a chicken coop for the last year or two. It seems that search has just ended. Looking forward to buying the plans from you and getting started. Very nice design.
Awesome!
Another option instead of hardware cloth would be fence panels. My area farm supply has panels with 1x1 squares 4 feet wide. Only down side they only come in 16 foot lengths. They are also much heavier gauge than hardware cloth. I know a guy who built his rn with used chain link fence on framing. Reason, it was free.
Wow what an amazing coop looks amazing
Thanks! I love how it turned out. Thanks for watching.
Awesome 👍 chickens house
Fantastic
Thanks! Glad you like it.
How do you keep the t111 from delaminating at the top from water intrusion. Will paint sealer or do you need to put some kind of top board to help shed the water?
Nice , can't wait to see the chickens 😊
That looks great!!!
Thanks!
Great job on the chicken coop mansion April! I'm sure the chickens are quite happy to have this big space to live in 🐔🐔🐔🐔:) and Happy Thanksgiving! Thanks for always sharing with us!💖👍😎JP
Thank you! Yes, it's nice they have room inside. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
@@AprilWilkerson Your very welcome April! Have a wonderful week & Happy Thanksgiving!😎
Brilliant way to cut the doors 2 your dry storage!!!❤❤❤
Thank you! Glad you found it useful.
Great job April and Jacob. That's a great looking Chick Inn Coupe. Thanks for sharing with us. Stay safe and keep up the great videos and fun around there. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone down there. Fred.
Thanks, you too!
Pretty good stuff April :)
Wow, awesom Chicken Manson!!! Perfect project for my boys and I to start during our "freezing" winters here in Texas. :)
Glad you found it useful. Thanks for watching.
Respect from Egypt April
Love your videos April! Unfortunately the audio in the last few has been very distracting, I don't know what's changed. Maybe your on jobsite mic is overly filtered? I'm sure whatever you had to change or fix has been a huge headache, just hope it can be fixed soon. Thanks for making great videos!
When filming inside the garage, of course the sound changes because of the echo. Outside, we deal with wind so even that changes things. Doing the best I can. Thanks for watching.
I have learned something new from you how to frame out the chicken coop and join them you are amazing
Thanks! Glad you found it useful. Thanks for watching.
Great video! I was a little nervous watching you cut with that junky miter saw set up! Three passes to cut a 2x4 is crazy! I know you love craftsman bits there are better saws but at lest upgrade to a 12” or at minimum buy a really good blade and it will cut like butter! There’s a lot of good videos on saw recommendations!
Everytime I watch your program, I learn something New. I would like a copy of your chicken coop
Beautiful cop!
I love it 😍🤯😮👍🏽
Wow!
Nice coup but it would be fun to discuss snow loads, frost lines and insulation with April someday. You tubers in the south live in a bubble not realizing that most of the world is quite different.
Oh, we realize it but it only makes sense to build something suited to our locale. We can't build multiples to suit every region or country nor have a 30 mins video trying to cover every area. Everyone can do their own due diligence. Thanks for watching.
looks great. wondering if just bringing the chicken wire out a meter would be enough to stop foxes digging under. Bit wary of them in our area.
Nice build. I'm glad you realized your error using poultry wire when you need a "Fort Knox" coop. For anyone reading, get the 1/2" hardware cloth. No predator can fit through that and it is a larger wire size than the 1/4" one might be tempted to use. Also, people need to know that the kind of staples you used are fine, Arrow staple gun style are NOT, they are easy to pull out. And a note: You do NOT want to close off all the ventilation in the winter. The birds need airflow to get the ammonia from their poop out of their living space. They will be fine as long as there is no draft on them while they sleep on the roosts.
I would also suggest to add solar powered motion detecting spotlights as they will deter predators from approaching when they get hit with the light
It would seem vital/wise to include the *hardware cloth note* both in the title and description of the video.
Awesome video, planning to use this design for my farm with a few tweaks for more insulation for the midwest winters :) How many chickens have you been able to keep in this design comfortably?
Not sure how many you were planning but I've no problem with the 22 I have. Thanks for watching.
Omg, my life is so complete now, thank you so very much...
You're welcome! I'm glad you found it useful.
Very nice, like the last one it looks different from the majority and I appreciate the creature comforts like the solar fan. For anyone who doesn’t catch it, never use chicken wire to protect your animals and birds! Not strong enough to defend from predators
Wow its great. Coming from rsinero magpatoc butuan city phillipines
What program is she using for the 3D model? I barely know how to use blender but this program looks different.
I had no idea I had a Chicken Mansion 😅 Mine makes that look small and I thought mine was a standard size. Love a lot of the details you incorporated into it great work! 👏
That is awesome!
I love that there are people building houses smaller than your chicken coop
What are the dimensions? We are wondering how portable this might be down the road if they move???
hate to tell you dogs and preditors can go straight through Hardware cloth to I would suggest 1 1/2 inch welded wire fencing . and skunks will dig under the walls
I used hardware cloth on my other one and never had a problem. Thanks for watching.
And the vinyl coated welded wire holds up better in more humid climates and damp soil.
Audio problems?
what keeps weasels and mink out
the piece behind you is beautiful
Which program do you use to draw up your plans?
I use SketchUp. It's a great program. Thanks for watching.
I usually check in on Monday to see if you a have posted new video, didn't find one. But all is not lost. I now have a chance to express my hope that you, your family and your crew had a happy, healthful and belly bloating Thanksgiving.. See you on your next one.
Yes, Thanksgiving was great and thanks for always checking in. Stay tuned and thanks for watching.
what software are you using for the design process?
I use SketchUp for my designs. Love it! Thanks for watching.
For coops in florida, you probably want to put some hurricane straps down to your birds don't fly away during strong storms...
Where do I find the plans
I've left you a Link under Title of Video. Click on "Show More" and scroll down. Thanks for watching.
How many birds can you have in that coop? I've got a flock of 30 layers.
6:50 make sure you listen to what April says about the wire. Chicken wire won't do anything to protect the chickens from predators. Foxes, raccoons, possums, weasels, coyotes, feral dogs, etc will all tear through it in seconds.
I was just wondering. How many eggs could you buy for what that cost And for how many years.
Things can't always be measured in cost. Fresh eggs and the joy of owning chickens, to me is more than worth the cost of building the coop. Just as owning a loving dog compared to the Vet, food, etc cost compared to 15 yrs or less is also worth it to me. It's all about priorities and what is right for you. Thanks for watching.
@@AprilWilkerson Oh, I agree. I built a small shed for 6 chickens so the family could have fresh eggs. But my wife decided to breed show birds and we ended up with about 8 dozen. Sorry if I sounded cynical. 🤣
I really like your show BTW.
If you build one for ducks, you could call it the Duck Out...😁
nice =)
@OffTheRanch Matt, April isn't too far from you, and build a sweet chicken coop
Just remember to check your building codes in your area. This needs permits in Oregon, Washington, and California, and you will have to bring up to code in these areas. 😢
She's out in the country in Texas, no buildin code in her case
But thanks for the clarification
Brava bel pollaiio
The wood will rot even on the cement bricks because cement absorbs water unless sealed. Consider placing metal or waterproof material between the cement and wood, if problems arise.
Hi April looks awesome. Unfortunately our tiny RUclips channel has been devastated by a massive oil leak and I have just put out the video of the damage.
April, this is amazing but if I build a bigger coupe my wife will have a duck.
I had a beagle that would dig right through chicken wire like it was dirt we did it based on vet recommendations on keeping him in the yard turned out to be a total failure
Yes, I found out later chicken wire is not safe for the chickens. That's why I said NOT to use chicken wire but use hardware cloth instead but use the same method of installing. Thanks for watching.
@AprilWilkerson I was just trying to reiterate your statement about not using chicken wire for safety
Chick-Inn...Cute. :)
Right?
When it grows up you're gonna need a bigger tree.
What the cluck..............
Nice build!
None of my business but are you and Jakob an item? He’s always your only helper 🤔.
Jacob is a valuable Employee and a Master Carpenter. I have another Employee Cindy who also lends a hand when needed. Thanks for watching.
@@AprilWilkerson
Okay, I didn’t mean to presume, I had read somewhere a while ago that you and your husband split and thus you moved to your new house.
Been watching your channel on RUclips for years, I think pretty much since you started it. I remember one episode where you said that were successful enough to quit your job and just work on your RUclips channel.
You always have great content, hope you have many more years of success! 😊
I luv chickens - they taste like........... well........... chicken.
I love chicken too but these will not be eaten. They become pets and are for the eggs. Thanks for watching.
LOL - It was a joke - I didn't think you built the 'Chicken-Mahal' as a branch of KFC.😀 @@AprilWilkerson
Has anyone built this yet and have a rough cost of materials? We are looking to get into chickens and its been tough figuring out costs for coops without buying plans
Cost of materials are subjective as some use some lumber they already have plus also where you buy it, and how how large you make the coop. Some build in stages as they can afford. It's just not a one answer for all. Thanks for watching.
Access or eggsess...?
This might be a weird comment, but whatever mic your using is impressive. I thought a lot of this was voice-over in a quiet room, but your lips were moving and I could hear the other nail gun from time to time.
I was thinking the same thing although my guess it was done post production. I think April had mic issues
Good old RUclips unsubscribed me again...cool coop, btw.
It’s adorable, but chicken wire is so easily broke into by animals. Your first one was hardware wire, but chicken coop wire is a misnomer, it doesn’t protect chickens. Honestly. You should consider using hardware wire, and pain black, makes it invisible so easier to see in and out. Hah just heard that you figured that out. How much did this coats, lumber is still very expensive.
Chicken wire doesn’t offer any protection from predators. A raccoon could wipe out your flock overnight.
Did you watch the video? She said exactly that.
I just saw one of your videos on tik tok but it wasn’t your account. Someone over there is reposting your content.
Chickenwire is NOT predator proof. Always always always use hardware cloth!
Yes, I mention that in the video and that I would replace it with hardware cloth. Thanks for watching.
I'm glad you found out about the poultry netting. I was watching this video and when I saw the netting, I started yelling, "NO ......NO .......NO".
You should collaborate with @oakabode
