NYCT Bus | 1998-99 OBI Orion 05.501 Review

These Orion Vs were NYCT's last Orion V order in it's history. Though they had a mild controversy, they spread fanny Orion pride through many routes of Staten Island, Queens, Upper Manhattan, Bronx, and my home borough of Brooklyn.
Being built since 1998, might make them a futuristic Orion V. They impress me with D60HF pride feeling, by the debatable engine combination, MAX3000 signage, and a roof exhaust. I didn't like these and other Orion Vs until they were retired, and never noticed them missing. In 2013, it was the best year where I rode one on the B47, and they came to Grand Ave Depot for my residents of Brooklyn. And I quite enjoyed seeing these buses on the B47, during my middle school years. Even at Eastchester Depot, they got in conjunction with their cousins from Westchester County. In fact, their cousins are more fortunate than these 1999 NYCT buddies. Plus, ENY had #6325 as their 2nd driven Orion V on their route since 1990 with a demo Orion V. Until 2015, these Orion V were starting their retirement due to to exceeded life span of structural failures. Thereby, the 2015/2016 New Flyer Xcelsior XD40s and Novabus LFS' came to NYC to replace them to scrap. By November 2016, these Orion Vs were officially retired and it was the end of the Orion V era. Best thing yet, #6326 is preserved in the museum fleet.

I have a few stories about these. When Hurricane Sandy happened, and everyone was out of power, my family and I were at Grand Central, and I saw these on the Q32, first realizing the Q32 runs in Manhattan. My other memories are my maternal grandparents used to live in Nassau County, and I would see these on lines, like the Q12 and Q44-Limited. It was amazing for these buses, with their issues to last 17 years!

FYI: 1999 orions never had Series 50 EGR, they were was delivered with the original Series 50 and it sounded like that. And I’m sure I miss those good old buses when they retired in 2016

Yeah, the only MTA Orion 5s to get the EGR variant was the 1993's (post repowerment), 1994-1995 CNGs (again, post repower) and the 2004 CNGs for Long Island bus.

Good Review Cedric, Ah Yes This Is Memories For Me, I Remember Riding These Orion V’s In Staten Island All Of The Time Whenever It’s From Castleton, Yukon Or Charleston Depots, Until April 7 2016, When I Rode 6079 On The S66, That’s The Last Time I Rode Those Orion V’s, I Missed These Orion V’s, They Were Part Of My Childhood.

I remember all the times I saw these on Casey Stengel Lines, on the Q12 on Northern Blvd, and Q44-LTD while crossing the Whitestone Bridge.

I don't remember my last ride on the 98-99 Orion V, but these were very popular in Staten Island. They were in fact okay, particularly if the engine sounded good that day. But these Orion Vs were not as hot as the earlier versions to be honest. But I still enjoyed them and miss them. I have pictures of some of them, one of #6244 on the s54 in Staten Island at the Manor Road and Schmidts Lane bus stop. I did notice the deteriorations in their late years and I was like, their end is near. But they served NYC well. 😊😊😊

I have also seen your 1999 Orion V CNG review. There are three reasons why I like those a little better than these, mostly the destination sign, looking more like an Xcelsior, and with the LED signs from CP.

They have been in service since 2011, but they are planned to be retired prematurely due to the electric bus orders. More will be delivered drastically by late 2024
