Great video. Recently I had to replace the drive belt and couldn't seem to figure out how to remove the "clutch locator" per page 25 (without removing the clutch), which is anti-rotation bracket in your video. I did the same thing by removing the whole clutch in the end. The manual doesn't indicate the torque of the clutch, so thanks for sharing its around 40-45 ft lbs. Wish I saw your video a week ago :) Though in order to torque the clutch bolt, I found it easier to also use a 12" adjustable wrench on the flat sides right above the clutch bolt to hold it in place while torqueing it down.
Dude, YOU ROCK ! I have had what I thought was electric starter problems for a year. I installed a new starter $80, I built a platform to accomadate a second battery, $90, but the problem kept getting worse. Finally, yesterday, I noticed that the starter bendix gear was hung up in the flywheel,(jammed-like). The only thing I could conclude was that either the engine was seized, which I was almost positive was not the case, or the thing was hung in a compression stroke or something...? I removed both spark plugs and tried to crank the engine, no-go. That's when the light bulb came on that possibly the clutch was causing friction or something. So I went to good 'ol RUclips, typed in "Riding mower clutch failure" and the first two videos were about clutches that had electrically failed. Your video was the third and, EURIKA ! I couldn't believe it ! You were describing my mower's exact problem ! Thanks for taking the time to show us.
I have exact same mower. I suspect a slipping PTO clutch. Just rebuilt deck and when I engage the blades, it takes a solid 5 seconds to reach full rotation speeds now. Belts not skipping and there's plenty of tension
Since your shirt said Louisville I think I am save to say thank you for the video from a fellow Louisvillian. I have the same problem with my DYT4000 and it seems to be an easy fix.
Glad you posted this video on this job I have a craftsman gt tractor with the same setup as your mower I'm catching a hard time with putting the Frank doom pullie yo stay in place while trying to install the 2 piece electric p.t.o
I have the Same mower that had the same problem! Good video guy! I have a 12 hp on it now, then some wire wrapped the pto and stripped the pto wires , not fun!
Yay you have my DYT4000! Replacing the electric clutch today. Impact wrench (mine is battery powered) absolutely necessary to remove long bolt. The only other problem I´ve had with this tractor is the plastic gas tank shattered around the fuel line connection. I meticulously drained the fuel system every fall, and apparently you´re *not* supposed to do that? There are no replacement fuel tanks, so I bolted an aluminum one under the back apron (yep, after watching RUclips videos). At the time I couldn´t find a square one that would fit under the seat but they may be available now. Other than the tank and the clutch, this mower has been completely trouble free. Course I just jixed myself. Hope yours is still rolling! Thanks for the video, it really helped. (ps If you set the parking brake it de-tensions the main drive belt so you don´t have to press the brake pedal with one hand)
Bilbo Mac ......Thanks for asking that question. I wanted to know the very same thing. I’m struggling to remove the PTO clutch on a Westwood T1600 and don’t know if the bolt is right or left hand thread. You saved me a great deal of time. Obliged to you.
Remove the air induction cage at the top of the engine. Then put a wrench on the top bolt. Have another person hold the wrench while you remove the bolt on the bottom of the clutch. Hope this helps
Does this mower have the same size engine shaft as one that uses a mower deck engagement cable? I'd like to see if I can retrofit my mower with an electric PTO since my cable keeps breaking.
You can usually just hold the drive pulley, if you want more torque, you can grab the belt that's around that pulley, holding it together, and use that as a kind of strap wrench. If you really want to torque it up, you can take off the fan cover on top of the engine, and grab onto the big crankshaft bolt on top of the engine with a suitable tool. It's usually just a few small screws to get that mesh cover off, and then you can see that bolt.
Have a question, my son has the same tractor, and I'm trouble shooting it now. When I pull the electric PTO knob, I get nothing, Its as if the PTO switch, (Knob) is not getting any electricity to power the clutch. Any ideas? Seat safety switch works to start the tracker is in Neutral. Engine sounds fine. Is it possible the PTO switch went bad? Hard to believe. I'm thinking its the electric side of the electric clutch. Could use some ideas. thanks.
Depending on the engine crankshaft runs all the way to the top of the engine. but that's how you could hold the shaft. While you turn the bolt on the bottom of the PTO shaft. Or use an impact wrench to remove it. And you won't have to hold it on top... the impact will get it loose.
Sometimes....i use carburetor cleaner untill it runs out of the bottem of the shaft, then soak it with P.B. until it starts to run out. They seem to resist less when i do this
Does the clutch you just replaced work for engaging the mowing deck only? or dose it also disengage the transmission for changing speeds? My 85 year old mother keeps her foot on the clutch pedal the entire time she mows, is that a no ,no? It seems like the clutch or a drive belt is slipping, the mower will pause briefly and then take off again.
you are correct, that is a no no. What she is doing is unloading the tension from the drive belt. You can see what happens at 6:50 in the video when the brake pedal is pushed, when that pedal is released, then all the tension is put on the drive belt, which allows the tractor to move forward or reverse, depending in which position the gear lever is in. When she leaves her foot on the pedal, it will allow the belt to slip, and the belt will wear more quickly.
buy a mower with a manual blade engagement and it will last the life of the mower, buy one with a pto electric clutch and you will replace the electric clutch 2 or 3 times during the life of the mower and they really are a pain to replace because the clutch is costly and usually stuck on the motor
George - what modern lawn or garden tractor, that you can buy today, has a manual blade engagement? Even my 1969 John Deere 140 has an Ogura electric PTO clutch. I'm pretty sure that we are going to need to replace my father's clutch on his 2018 Cub Cadet RZT SX mower with 114 hours on it - what junk.
So I sat through this entire video to see how you kept the engine from turning while you tightened the pulley bolt and you never showed that! I have to remove the pulley on my tractor and I can’t hold the engine?!?
I've heard of people removing a spark plug and pushing some rope into the spark plug hole. That prevents the piston from moving all the way. I've never tried it. Maybe someone can respond.
Very Great Video!! Thank you for sharing this Video. I couldn't figure how to remove the engine drive betlt until I saw your video..

Grat example how nice you covered every step into detail! Great job😊

Biff Tuber - You’re Welcome. Glad to have helped - it’s the whole reason I take the time to put these type of videos out there.
I have the same mower and this video will save me a ton of time replacing my clutch
Thank you Scott. Very good video, clear details, especially a HUGE thanks for providing the mower # and associated part numbers.

Great job on the vid good visibility with camera angles and great explanation, Big thumbs up (:
Scott farrar . Excelente video gracias!!

Doing a great job explaining step be step, one thing,it's not a driveshaft it's the crankshaft, but otherwise great job!
Ga Girl
Thank You for your great video and explanation. I am going to try this. Got an impact driver to remove bolt and will manually replace it.

Good tip!
Great job, love all the details as well.
Good video. Would have helped to show removing bolt that holds clutch onto drive shaft. Does shaft turn, making bolt removal difficult?

@@dchudomelka The bolt on the top of the engine came loose.
Thank you, for the video
I love the video. I have a Craftsman zero-turn mower I assume that both that holds the PTO clutch onto the bottom of the is regular thread correct
Mr Scott that's your anti rotation device it keeps your pto clutch from moving when you engage your blades
Does this mower have the same size engine shaft as one that uses a mower deck engagement cable? I'd like to see if I can retrofit my mower with an electric PTO since my cable keeps breaking.
Did you work on two different mowers? The mower showing had two different brand batteries in your video.
How did you keep the crankshaft from turning while you torqued the bolt down?
You can usually just hold the drive pulley, if you want more torque, you can grab the belt that's around that pulley, holding it together, and use that as a kind of strap wrench. It's usually just a few small screws to get that mesh cover off, and then you can see that bolt.
There's a flywheel bolt pretty easily accessible at the top of the engine. Pop off the round trim cap and there it is.
I have the same lawn mower as you. Can you tell me what pto clutch part number is so I can the right one. thank you
Have a question, my son has the same tractor, and I'm trouble shooting it now. How do I get the 5/8 bolt holding pto on loose. When I try to loosen it w ratchet engine turns over.
I use an electric impact.

looking for a small pto for 1" shaft on my vanguard 16hp but the clutches cost more than the engine ...
Am I the only one that hates when someone shuts a mower down wide open? You don't shut your vehicle down running wide open?
Yeah, crazy.
It doesn’t harm them
is there a place to get these clutches cheap? I'm seeing the one I need selling for 400, thats like 1/3 of the price i paid for the mower brand new!
I get my parts off of AmazonPrime.
I just bought one online from Sears for $200 brand new.
I got mine from Amazon, xtreme clutch is the brand for 130.
Does the clutch you just replaced work for engaging the mowing deck only? or dose it also disengage the transmission for changing speeds? mine came off the anti rotation bracket, and tore it all to pieces .
Mine too.
So I sat through this entire video to see how you kept the engine from turning while you tightened the pulley bolt and you never showed that! I have to remove the pulley on my tractor and I can’t hold the engine?!?
I used an Air Compressor Impact Wrench.
Scott Farrar Thanks

You forgat to say that you're using your left hand to install the bolt 😂😂😂 just a joke
annoying music
