Black, white, it doesn’t matter as long as it’s good. Which is true. But.
If you’re a little Black kid, growing up in the 60s/70s, to see Black artists succeed, and to have that success recognized as coming specifically from Black people, well, that was a big damn deal. Same for Native American kids with Redbone. “That’s someone who looks like me! If they can do it, I can too!”
White folks have been the default for so long, it’s easy to take for granted, but that racial distinction matters, because representation matters.

@@DiconDissectionalReactions How soon they forget. Before Earth Wind & Fire America loved both the Phllly Sound and the Motown Sound, both of which featured Black artists who were wildly successful. Growing up in Metro Detroit, I'm more versed in Motown lore. Motown introduced The Supremes, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Diana Ross, and a host of other musical acts one tier below those in the amount of fame they achieved.
I've had the pleasure of sitting down with Martha Reeves and talking music with her for an hour of so. She remained a celebrity in Detroit for decades after her heyday.
American's embracing Black performers has been citied both as success stories for the performers involved, and as a manifestation of racism, the argument being that Blacks were OK to put on a show for white folks, but apparently not for much of anything else, with the stereotype given that Blacks just had natural rhythm.
The British Invasion pushed a lot of Black acts to the sidelines, so I'd agree that the advent of and success of Earth, Wind, and Fire could have served as inspiration and pride for a new generation of young Black kids. I truly don't care for funk or r and b music, but if I have to listen to it, bring on some EW & F for me. please.
Maybe somebody from Philly can rhapsodize a bit about all of the Philly Sound acts.

Yes, I was just writing a comment on this when I saw these posts. Good comments. I'd just add cultural context can be very important in understanding music - like Bob Marley for ex. Or bands like EWF, who would've been banned from many clubs just a few years before their formation (1969). This not simply about color, PC or some abstract notion of ethnicity - this is about real world issues that many had to deal with and it affected many aspects of their lives - particularly the cultural artifacts they create. If you're serious about understanding why music sounds the way it does - and Daniel, you seem to be - history and context is critical.

    • @ricmotta2495
      @ricmotta2495 3 года назад +1

So so true. I would say that more importantly what set EWF apart and to a lesser degree (commercially), Maze being #2, were bands that weren't just looked up to in all the important ways you mention, but brought musical instruments, cultural influences and a strong dose of pride directly from Africa into their songs and shows. Managing to incorporate all that and the endless good vibes into one band is a gift I hope we will never hear the end of.

I take issue only with the fact people still keep these distinctions around today.
The supposed “That’s someone who looks like me! If they can do it, I can too!” rhetoric.
Like you can't be inspired by black musicians as a white guy or vice versa. What's with thinking people are like that? Are you like that?

Oh and “You Haven’t Done Nothing” is really appropriate in this day and age alsp

Philip Bailey is a master at singing falsetto. His voice really shines on "Reasons", pulling off an amazing call & response w the saxophonist. Another stellar (instrumental) track, Sun Goddess, feat. the legendary Ramsey Lewis. The live versions of these songs from their Gratitude double album are mind-blowing, far beyond the studio versions. Shining Star, Yearnin' Learnin', Sing A Song were some of their pre disco (early 70s) best offerings.

About 10-15 days ago I (and I was then joined by a few others) raised a stink in comments on a channel because I think there has been One song reacted to that was performed by a woman there, and there had been zero songs by black stars. There is also incredible "socially conscious funk". Like a great guitarist named Curtis Mayfield (Pusherman, Superfly). And War's song The World Is a Ghetto (long version) is ear candy (and when I say funk, I also mean it rocks). Also Bobby Womack's "Across 110th Street" (good enough for opening a Tarrantino movie).

EWF is an awesome, influential band. September is considered a "crossover" hit because in the 70s/80s, black artists could crossover from black radio to mainstream stations when the songs were more pop/dance-based and less R&B or funk-based. EWF's massive catalog is pretty diverse.

  • @Live2swim

Would be cool to react to Stevie Wonder's song Superstition. Wonder is blind, black, and started out as a Motown artist, with their great studio musicians playing behind him. But he became one of the first people in rock to write, arrange and produce his own music. On Superstition he plays the drums, very well, and the clavicord. He started as a pianist, singer (obviously?), and on Superstition he plays the bass on a moog synthesizer -- the moog does it quite well! Jeff Beck (famous guy)worked on the bass part with him, but Stevie's version was the big hit.
Oooh what would be really cool would be to immeduately after, also listen to Rick Beato's breakdown of Superstition...on your video. I think it would be fun to see you hear parts of the tracks of individual instruments. And Steve's amazing vocals singled out, which few singers can cover well. Just an udea. But probably should wait a good while, until Rick Beato's video has been online several months, to be considerate. It's kind of new. But he is not a blocker I will bet, because he does a lot of videos talking about how much he hates blockers.

"September" is a great song who's lyrics mean next to nothing. It's more about the feeling and the groove. The words and syllables are used as they were used traditionally in early R & R, merely as a way to introduce and ride on the rhythm. As a way to advance the melody. Try them doing "Fantasy", "After The Love Is Gone", "Let's Groove", "Shining Star" and "Reasons". Welcome to great falsetto of the incredible Phillip Bailey.

The existence of "segregated" music reflects 300 years of slavery and 100 years of Jim Crow. Not too long before EWF topped the charts, a very different world existed. White artists like Pat Boone would re-record great records that had been recorded by black artists because radio would not play black acts. In fact, it wasn't until the 1960s that black artists became mainstreamed, or "crossover." As you study US history, you'll figure out why there were genres like "black pop" and "soul" and "R&B" and maybe even "disco." All tied to our national identity - all tied to the entire African American experience.

A band that had two "eras" regarding record labels. Releasing two albums in 1971, they were a fairly nondescript R&B band on Warner Bros. Records. In '72, leader Maurice White, formerly with the Ramsey Lewis Trio jazz combo, shook up, and re-formed EWF with several new members. During a performance at NYC's Rockefeller Center, Columbia Records president (and record industry legend), Clive Davis, was in attendance, and impressed with their show, proceeded to purchase their contract from Warner Bros.
Several R&B chart hits followed, with no real breakthrough smash. That was until White and veteran soul and R&B producer, Charles Stepney produced EWF's "That's the Way of the World" LP in 1975. That LP got to the top of both the Billboard Top 200 and their Top Soul Albums lists, while that album's "Shining Star" became their first breakout hit, zooming to #1 on the pop charts, becoming the first Black act to top both Billboard's singles and album charts.
The album's success led them to be able to hire their own horn section, originally dubbed the EWF horns, but later morphed into the Phenix Horns (yes, spelled that way). "September" was issued in 1978, and got to "only" #8 on the US pop charts, but made it all the way up to #3 in the UK!
Maurice White, the heart and soul of EWF, died on February 4, 2016, after suffering for some years with Parkinson's disease.

Back when EWF started performing there were still places in the South where black people could not stay in some motels/hotels or even in certain towns after dark (and there are still such sundowner towns in parts of the US) and slept in their cars or busses or left town. Although such was illegal by the late 60s. When I was young, black music wasn’t played on ‘white’ radio stations or shown performing on TV. When Little Richard made "Tutti Frutti" and it was a huge hit that attracted white teens in the mid-50s the powers that were made a white crooner named Pat Boone cover the song. *That’s* who many white kids thought made the original song. There were other such examples. A lot has changed for the better, but that racism still percolates under the surface. My family is from the South, I’ve seen and heard it my whole life.

As much as I love prog rock and hard rock there are also some very good R&B/soul songs. Try Strawberry Letter 23 by the Brothers Johnson, Suavecito by Malo or Just My Imagination by The Temptations. Who's That Lady (parts 1 & 2) by The Isley Brothers has a great guitar solo (and 7 million+ views)..

Omg...I can't believe I missed this from you! I specifically go in and look for EWF reactions! These guys are a kick! I still listen to their double album of greatest hits, especially when I do my acrylic pour painting! Get me in a groove in no time! This tune can become an earworm to carry you around if you're bopping around doing errands!

Awwwwright! Moving into R&B. Sooner or later, you will get into Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, Stevie Wonder's Innervisions (Livin' for the City - a must!), Curtis, Roberta Flack (the original Killing Me Softly). I agree that great music is great music - but there is also history. The blues and R&B didn't come out ot thin air. But great R&B can be done by any great musician.

Mega-popular “dance-tune” by one of the BEST R&B bands; vocally/instrumentally/Songwriting/arrangement-wise, of all time! So much to talk about with this particular production, lyrics being the least of those elements, LOL!

A cover of this song was just released by a fairly unknown artist...Judith Owen. The vibe is completely different....taking the darker, more poignant interpretation. It becomes a very different song when done by a true “torch” singer.

Lest anyone think the part about the book is some sort of Mandela effect, the book was actually written in 1968, republished in 1983. To whoever made that comment, Wikipedia tends to hide that information in the body of the description. ;)

I know I’m late to this party, but so glad I found it! I always loved this song but could never understand the lyrics, so used to sing nonsense syllables! 🤣. You can’t sit still. Liked your comments about race and music because it’s so insignificant. Glad you liked this! I thought this song was about him nostalgically remembering an important relationship.
