This is truly my favorite groups of all time, I may have mentioned this before, but Maurice White, and brother and band, were not allowed to do drugs... or they would be fired... drinking because it was legal in moderation but this is one reason they were so incredible... Watch California Jam, where Phillip Bailey, sang 'Keep your Head to the Sky OMG they are amazing in concert and are playing here soon in san diego with Carlos Santana.... Thank you thank you I love them so much !!! Musical Genius' who changed the world!

A buddy and I DJ'd dances back in the eighties, and if things got slow on the dance floor, all we had to do was cue up this song - instantly filled the floor. Never failed. You just can't listen to this song without moving. It's on my favorites playlist to this day and gets revisited from time to time. Love it. Great review. Thanks.

I was a runaway teen living in North Hollywood in a "runaway's home" that was founded by the owner who was a Christian convert. It just so happens that he was also a bigwig in the music industry (helping The Eagles to form into a group among other things!) until he became a devout Christian. While living there, Earth, Wind & Fire came by after a show, and they had rented an entire apartment building across the street which the same guy also owned. I got to meet them all and to hang out with them for a while. Very cool! And they could not have been nicer to a young runaway than they were. They treated me like an equal in many ways. I liked them before that and LOVED them after that.
That same night, Gabriel Ferrer came over, as he used to do all the time, (he was a pretty good piano player and singer) to sing Christian songs for us, often bringing his wife, Debbie Boone, of "You Light Up My Life" musical fame herself, to sing with him. For a runaway, I led a pretty amazing life for a while there. I have other stories from that incredible house, but they will have to wait for another day.

That's a beautiful real life story. I'm very touched by it. It reminds me of how when I was going through a rough time as a child I was sent to a school for kids struggling that they felt had great potential. That school changed the direction of my life and is a big part of who I am now. I was so sad when they felt I no longer needed to be there.
You could write a book about your life in those days. I think at the least it would make a wonderful movie.

Maurice goes back years in jazz as a drummer. Best known for vocalist in EW&F but he was quite a jazz drummer. If not for EW&F he would have been well respected and known for as a drummer. Maybe not as famous as Art Blaky, "Philly Joe" Jones, or Papa Jo Jones but he would have been still a very influential drummer.

Hi Fil! Any song that has September in the title has my attention...please don’t laugh at me on this, but let me share my hubby was due to get home from Vietnam in September..so of course we had See You In September as one of OUR songs...also the one September Morn gets me misty...also Sealed With a Kiss talking about September ...I know I may be silly still thinking of those times, but the memories are precious to me! This song made everyone get up, and move....but the one that still tears my heart is The Happenings, and See You In September....thanks for indulging this old lady today. I still feel young if that helps! Just shared with my hubby why I give my money to you as a patreon...I told him you are the only one who takes the time to humor people like me who gets to go back in time! Hugs sweet Fil...made my day! Btw..my hubby thinks it is great you give me this much pleasure! Lots of RUclips people needing help, but I chose you...you seem like my kid! ✌️❤️ A heart today too!

Never understood the words to this song when I first heard it in 1981 but the words didn't matter because it was a song that had a great sound and like Fil said it stays with you all day. It makes you happy and feel good. It was back in the days where music was made from real talent and not computer midi music or a drum machine in the background and no voice modifications to cover up or enhance terrible singing.

First of all...EW&F is a top of the line show band. Top talent from each musician at their instruments...but imagine the auditions to just be qualified to be in the band. Ok you can read charts that are full of dynamics and groove with particular syncopations and memorize it all, but you must be able to take it further than stand alone boogie movements with your body...you must be able to memorize choreographed dance movements, make it look natural, smile all of the whole arrangement of every song.
Talk about disciplined rehearsals and only those who dare become considered to be a qualified band member. Extraordinary to get so much talent in one band that includes a full horn section, guitar, bass and keys as well as vocalists to boot.
Hats off to this phenomenal group.
Thanks for pick and detailed analysis Mr Fil.

This was a terrific trip down memory lane. I lived in Rome for 2 years when I was a teenager in the late 1970s when this song was released. We used to go to Saturday afternoon discos (I'd never heard of them before) and this song was always played. The whole place went wild. I remember coming out of the disco a couple of hours later when the DJ had finished his show and it was broad daylight and very sunny and warm. I was totally disorientated, as in my experience you'd usually come out of a nightclub and it was dark. However, I digress. I loved this analysis of EWF's September, and yes, they were a fantastic band. I still listen to them today. Thanks Fil!

So... 1978. I remember this song as a feel good song although (unlike many popular songs of the era) I never took the time to analyze the lyrics. There seemed to be no point. In my mind, it was just a celebration of some real or imagined thing that might have happened in "September". Having grown up in Texas, September was usually the break from hot as hell, and a time when "us kids" could get together in outdoor venues such as parties and such. At any rate, a fun song.

Verdine White is the key to SO much of this. I remember seeing a TV concert performance right when I was starting out in music in the early '80s, and seeing Verdine doing his thing, just killing it onstage just with his moves! But delivering perfect groove with his fingers, and just being astounded by that. Plus the overall positivity of the whole package just blew the roof off!
But they weren't the only ones. I was lucky enough to play in a band with John "Skin" Simpson, (formerly S.O.S. Band) and he taught me more about groove and living inside music than anyone I've ever had the privilege of playing with.

Cool! EWF! My absolute No.1 life act. I have seen them 14 times since 1978. One year they don't came to northern germany, so i visited the gig in Paris. Three days of driving, sleeping in a car, that didn't make it back, unforgetable. When Maurice retired because of Parkinson, Philip and Verdine came to Hamburg frequently and i didn't miss a single gig. Then i left Hamburg and the streak was broken. But definitely one of the best performers i have ever seen (and i have seen quite a few)

The bass player is so perfectly in the pocket. Personally he was my favorite part of the band (then again so was Stevie Wonder's player on Sir Duke and Do I Do. I loved the Motown bands of that era despite the guitar players rarely doing anything memorable. Any chance of you covering Jamerson's Heard It Through The Grapevine (the fast version) or Nathan Watts in Do I Do?

Fil, loved this analysis. I've been seeing EWF in concert several times over the last 40+ years, most recently about 4 years ago with Chicago. I suggested to you a while ago a video where both Chicago and EWF are on stage together. Pretty tremendous. I hope that suggestion comes to the top of the list soon! Thanks again for analyzing EWF.

Seriously sincere analysis since singing sensations such as singers such as seen seems such a nonsensical pursuit.
You really are great at these analyses, nailing all aspects of why we appreciate music. Can't wait for your next video!

Great take Phil as always. Happy to see this genre as a longtime classic soul, r&b and jazz fanatic. A guitar instructor years ago told me I just have a thing for 7ths and 9ths. Lol. But art was my strength and that’s what I pursued - but while on the drawing board last week doing some freelance I was contemplating the creative parallels between music and the art process. It’s really amazing. And this video really demonstrates that. Very inspirational.

    Great. "Gratitude" was great.
I saw every act I wanted to see except Jimi Hendrix.
Started with LZ, '73, last AC/DC, Black Ice.
Never saw a show like Earth Wind and Fire, Oakland Arena, '78.
great then 'they' walk into a pyramid that lifts off, collapses and the band is playing again !! amazing.

Yeah! I was in that show in Berlin! First this astronauts entered stage, than the band members soloed and climbed in that pyramid. After the last one it was pulled up high, than collapsed and the astronauts kept playing! What a show! When i remember right this was the show with the "Bad superhero vs Maurice superhero" lasershow?

If ya'll get off on this type of music, may I recommend Leonid and Friends. I guarantee they will blow you away, oh yeah, they're Russians who mostly play Chicago's music but they do this song and others as well.

Hello Fil! Thank you for doing an analysis on EW&F-one of my top five all time favorite bands. I agree with you about this song and the hook from this particular song. I will say that I love EW&F for the fact that they could do a song like this and also create beautiful and meaningful lyrics in other songs. I learned the lyrics to many of their songs and they usually have a very positive and spiritual essence. Put that together with their musicianship and you have a very rounded band. I saw them 4 times live and it was always one of the best shows I ever attended. Thank you, as always!!

Have an LP record from earth, wind, and fire. There is something about their music that resonates. I have an autistic son, who is nonverbal. For some reason, however his musical scales are highly developed(I can basically hand him in any instrument, and he can figure out a tune on it within a day with accurate pitch and perfect timing). Although my son loves all sorts of different music, there’s something about the rhythms of Earth, wind and fire that you sent him into motion, and he gets so excited and immediately goes to the piano.

Maurice could wear the hell out of his pants. And. His bro, Verdine ENERGY IS NUTS. AND. Philip Bailys falsetto is INSANE. A couple weeks ago someone tried to say Bee Gees falsetto was better. I was like, the hell u say! I’ve nothing bad to say About Bee Gees but they do NOT compare to EWF. IMHO

Earth Wind And Fire! That horn section is off the chain! What a great dance song! A memorable Band for sure, and the lead singer, Maurice, something else..... I love your break downs of each syllables, made a lot of sense, the sssssssssssssss syllables not sounding great, love to hear your analysis of this band it's spot on, and Maurice, made this band memorable! By the way they are going to be here in my neck of the woods, in Tinley Park, Illinois, along with Santana August the 8th!

It was played on the radio a lot. Too disco for my taste but watching the clip, well it's not often you hear a live band produce something that sounds exactly like the recorded version, that's very impressive. I would never have considered seeing them live, but it looks like it would have been fun.

for those of us who grew up listening to the band in the 70s fell in love with the sounds when they did their interludes between the songs on the albums, having said that, they wrote some of the most deep lyrics ever written i.e. Head to the Sky, Spirit, Take it to the sky, so in our world, we'll take it from the rooty to the tooty ;0 EWF fan 4 life

It's interesting how you mentioned Maurice White saying "never let the lyrics get in the way of a groove". It really emphasizes how pop can take hold of your psyche. Most recently with "Gangnam Style" that became a world wide hit despite most people not understanding Korean or how and older guy like me loves McCartney's "Monkberry Moon Delight" with its nonsense lyrics.

I enjoyed hearing your analysis and it definitely makes sense why September is my all time favorite. Other than it’s easy-to-sing, upbeat, get-up-and-dance melody, I always wondered what IS it about THAT song? Your analysis “hit the nail” - the hook, vowels are easy to sing, a lot going on instrumentally but never over powering another. Then I happen to come across a RUclips video of an a cappella version of September (September -EWF-SoFlo Harmony; MAS Vocal) which made me realize there IS a lot going on instrumentally! Thanks!

My god this is the best break-down of my signature song and I’ve seen a lot because I love the magic of the song. I’m all about melody and Maurice saying don’t let a lyric get in the way of a groove…that says it all. Get nailed it for me, 66 years old and I still don’t know the full lyrics😂🥂
