- "The End of the Innocence" performed by Bruce Hornsby with special guests yMusic at National Sawdust in Brooklyn, NY on April 30th, 2019. "The End of the Innocence" was written by Bruce Hornsby and Don Henley and originally appeared on Henley's album 'The End of Innocence'.
Bruce is one of those special artists who are continuously improving
This song will never get old no matter how many times you listen to it. From the lyrics, to the musical arrangement to the instrumentals and powerful meaning. Everyone I think can relate somehow to this song
Thank you so much, Bruce. Have been in love with your music for my whole life. Best greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
For those of us later Generation X/Younger Millenials who first heard this song while coming of age at the end of the 20th Century, it hit different after 9/11…. “Oh beautiful for spacious skies, and now those skies are threatening.”
Nice perspective. A good song is timeless and applicable to any listener. Mr. Hornsby has done that many times over the generations.
that was beautiful.
Thank you, Mr. Hornsby, for this beautiful reminder of my youth. You and your music are part of it.❤
One of my all time favorites! So heart felt ~
My father died many years ago when I was a young man, he was a self taught pianist and whenever I hear music like this I think of him and the music that we could have shared.
Bruce Hornsbys music is the soundtrack to a lot of my life. I’ve never had such a meaningful back catalog of sentimental music
I hope you have heard all of the recordings he participated on with other ensembles, before his solo career.
Thank you, Mister Bruce Hornsby for your beautiful song.
Amen Carrie Lynn Stone

In deed
The one by Don Henley is already emotional but this version takes it to a whole other level of emotional. Beautiful. Just beautiful. What a musical genius.
Bruce Hornsby wrote this song for Don Henley. He also wrote Jacob's Ladder for Huey Lewis.
He taught Don Henley
At one of Bruce Hornsby's concerts that I was at (I've seen 7 of his shoss), Bruce said "I wrote this for my friend Don Henley" right before he played "End of the Innocence".
@@ericsinger7393 I didn't know that... that's awesome!
You're welcome @ MariaLisa. Yep, in addition to his own great songs, and writing songs for Henley and Lewis, he played piano on Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me If You Don't" (which you can see in her official video), did a cover of PF's "Comfortably Numb", which he performed with Roger Waters in an early 90's concert (which you can see on You Tube), sang a Stevie Nicks song with her (which you can hear, but not see on You Tube), performed with The Grateful Dead at 100 of their shows, toured in a band with Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Shawn Colvin, and I think 1 or 2 others, and sat in with The Band, among others.
When I first met Bruce, it was backstage at a Grateful Dead concert. There was a connection between us immediately. We never saw each other again, for various reasons, but we'll always be friends, and comrades. He is truly a great songwriter, and a wonderful human being. Someday we'll meet again, Bruce.
Bruce played 2 nights at National Sawdust in 2019. The 29th and the 30th and I was fortunate to be at the first nights gig. I flew from Edinburgh to NYC and it was magical, truly magical and I was sat right behind Bruce in the front row at the end. I had to keep pinching myself at being there as the last time was in 6th October 1990 at Edinburgh’s Playhouse. The following day I met him as he walked out his hotel and long before camera phones I just chatted with him for 5 minutes. Lovely guy and extremely polite thus developed a life long love of his music that still moves me to tears when ever I listen to it... thank you BR Hornsby for all you do 👏👏👏
Bruce Hornsby what can I say about this man I started to listen to his music in the 80s when I was 16 years old and he has been with me for more years than I can remember always will always have love for this man’s music he is a true legend
I could listen to this man forever .. never was there a man who could mix words and music so emotionally.. he is a master .
He takes you on journey , one of which I never want to leave .. long may you make music Mr Hornsby .
Beautiful. This man has never let me down. Having a shitty day, just put on some Hornsby and smile.
WOW! I thought I could not love that song anymore than I did before seeing this. This is a work of art. BRAVO to all the musicians.
Every time I hear Hornsby play the piano he either paints a beautiful sunrise or sunset. This is definitely a sunset. Thank you Bruce
Bruce -- you are one of my heroes. Thank you for playing music so beautiful and well crafted that a casual pop listener can enjoy, and serious musicians can sit back and go "wow." You are a gift. Thank you.
Bruce Hornsby is a genius as always and underrated musician 😢
Now I understand.
Bruce is the soundtrack of my life.
Beautifully said....rjc
I completely feel the same way.
Gosh, I could listen to him riff on the piano for hours. Absolute chills everywhere...
Brilliant! A true master. One of a kind genius and stellar specimen of the human race.
I cannot put it in words. It left me in awe. My spirit overwhelmed. Simply brilliant!
When Brent died he played with the Grateful Dead for two years he actually came up into the crowd in New Jersey and I went up and was talkin to him for like 5 minutes 10 minutes he is so down-to-earth and very cool person to talk to
One of the best songs ever written. Thanks, Bruce.
A life well lived can embellish the subtleties of nuances that life bestows. Thank You Bruce
So beautifully stated. Yes, yes, yes.
THE BEST OF THE BEST OMG THIS IS SÓ BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL. ...
No matter where i am when i hear Bruce H. sing & play i stop everything and listen . He is a national treasure . SHHHHH listen ....so good !
This song is more relevant now than ever.
I love his musical tangents. When I saw him live, the lesson I took away was that sometimes it's fun to go down the rabbit hole. By necessity, he has the orchestra drop out before he improvises, and it's clear that, although he knows where's he's headed, he stays loose while he gets there. He even smiles when a note isn't played exactly right, because he seems to crave the freefall more than perfection. It's an important lesson for any musician, unless you're a part of a situation where notes & arrangement need to be precise. I probably played 4 hrs straight after coming home from his show-he's that inspirational.
Because he was dead head at 19 years old when he saw them in in college at the University of Virginia he had a Grateful Dead cover band day
There's definitely different ways to enjoy music.
such a soulful reply musically and emotionally... like a stone thrown into a still pond, the ripples move out touching all of us in unsuspecting ways. he changed you . and certainly he too was changed by unknown others, which now move through your music
Bruce Hornsby is the soundtrack to America. He deserves many accolades 👏.👏🎼❤️🙏🎼
For me this is one of greatest songs ever written... thank you Mr. Hornsby and Mr. Henley... it encompasses past yes, ...but also present and future...
Mr. Hornsby we love you with all our heart! You have fed us more jazz music and we can eat! Keep it going brother! We will eat all your music! Chowdown America!
Something about the sound of a piano is just hunting and deep.
It just touch the soul deep
Followed for 40 years the best man and player for me, greatest without a doubt, bar Scarborough fair and my way Elvis!!

One of my all-time favourite songs....and so amazing to listen to Bruce Hornsby...an amazing musician...play this for us.
One of my all-time favorite songs too. I think art which includes the writing of music is an invitation made by the artist to take the viewer on a trip to view his/hers opinions about life . Hornsby is first-rate at doing this.
Thank You for your music
I honestly had no idea he co-wrote this song, but I'm not surprised - cool - and a heartfelt arrangement as well - I got a bit choked up I must say. Thank you, Bruce - you're the best.
It would be my guess he wrote most of it.. Just a guess from the richness of the chords, 9ths, 7ths etc..
Music Bruce Hornsby, lyrics Don Henley.
OMG, the first time I heard it I knew it had his hand all over it. Absolutely classic Bruce Hornsby, and a brilliant song!
The poise and gentleness he plays the piano is breathtaking. And at the same time it’s strong and deliberate. Stunning!

Father time gets us all! Great song and performance!
He is a genius. Back in the day when he was commercial, still the best, refined now full circle comes around, from a retired musician of so many gigs.
Straight from the heart 💓
@Bruce Hornsby Hello😁
I have never seen a person w/ so much expansive talent and bands w/ amazing musicians.
This comes from a (now retired) guitar maker/ repairman who has seen / heard what lots of folks call "world class" music.
There's no competition here or anywhere 've heard Bruce H. It's always generosity, co-support, and imparting joy to his players and audiences alike.
What a powerful man, with powerful and fun uplifting messages. This guy is truly on a "Spirit Trail".
Ed R.
Thanks.
Saw him in Grand Rapids in 85 at a free concert after hearing the DJ, Aris Hamper introduce, review, and play a completely unknown artist full promo album. Was hooked for life.
Omg Bruce! My father has cancer and this is the end of innocence for me. Thank you for all!!
Sir Bruce Hornsby has that kind of voice and song that erases all stress and worries on a cool sunny day atop a well worn boulder looking out on a slow flowin body of fresh water.
Thank You, Sir!👏👏👏
What a beautiful rendition of this classic song. Such a gifted musician.
Listen if you want to get through the hell of the earth listen to Bruce Hornsby!!¡
Thank you so much for the memories. Lovely man.
This takes me back to my youth Thank you ❤️💗❤️

I want n try to hold on to 'yesterday'......some many souls n luvs lost.......I wanna go back...SO SO BAD!!
This is one of those songs I can listen to all day long and feel I am far away from all the problems we are going through right now.
Love your creativity Bruce. Brilliant. Xo
Fascinating to watch Bruce play, an authentic talented musician, not one of those "one hit wonders" in the 1980's.
Yet he had awesome hits back then that I really like !! My personal favorite, Valley Road.
Love watching him play, and get into the music when he's playing... Awesome !! 👍 👍
wow.. my favorite version of this song !
Absolutely PERFECT by Bruce and his group! WOW XX
I"m just living and dying listening to him and his band, lyricis, brothers, sisters. Overwhelmed.
Bruce is looking good and sounding awesome! God bless you! Thanks for the music!
Every so often you will by chance stumble across a piece of music that takes you on a rich joyous image filled journey. And I almost felt bad going back for a second helping and it revealed more. What a treat. Thank you Bruce
I have listened to this song since it was first released......only as years progress do you realise the intrinsic definition.....
Mr. Hornsby - The One and ONLY
Amazingly great version.
when artists have toured a song for too long they add to many changes and new inflections that weren't in the record.....to some extent this is cool, but then it always goes that bit too far. Still he has to keep it interesting to himself.
This is excellent, but I still prefer Henley's vocals. I'm not particularly excited about the arrangement, either, but given the size of the ensemble, it's not supposed to be a cover, it stands on it's own.
So many amazing songs that came from his mind... Thank you Bruce!
@Bruce Hornsby Hello sir once again thank you for such beautiful music for lyrics that touch our souls for an outlet to pour out emotions we didnt even know we were holding inside. Hope you and yours are well Peace.
Such a Great song!!!
A true musical genius! Your music has gotten me through some very tough times in my life and I can’t thank you enough!
Anthem of a generation. Beautiful song drawing the emotion of a lifetime.
The tragedy of the past 4 decades of America in one song.
What a statement, thank you for sharing.
He should release these versions on streaming services, absolutely beautiful!

OUTSTANDING!!!! You can hear his distinct piano when Don Henley put out this song. BRAVO to Don and Bruce.
Beautiful song♥️
I am grateful that I have had the great fortune of listening to this musical genius from the 80's to present! He still has an amazing voice and time has certainly not affected his piano skills! Thank you Sir for some of the most memorable music to many who have grown old with you! You are amazing Sir!
Beautifull…..,
Loved it ! Gave it much class , but of course it's Bruce!!! Thanks for posting...💝🌷🍷🍷
So fortunate to have Bruce with this gem in these hard times! Could play this one over and over again☺️.

Harbor lights by Bruce Hornsby Jerry Garcia and Pat Metheny is the best album I've ever heard in my life!
Thank you Bruce for the music and inspiration, you are the best.
One of my favorite songs of all time he wrote this for Don Henley so Bruce is the originate songwriter I didn't know that until probably about 6-8 months ago Don Henley does a great job of this song but you know you can't beat the original mr. Hornsby love you man it's the reason I play piano today!!😎🏝
Wasn't it a co-write??
@@jaolin6042 no actually Bruce Hornsby wrote that song he wrote it for Don Henley he wrote some songs for Phil Collins also yeah, Hornsby wrote it😎🤙
@@robbiefield7601 "The collaboration actually started two years before, in the summer of 1987, when Hornsby got a surprise phone call from Henley. At the time, Hornsby was what an Eagles-era Henley might have called “the new kid in town”: Bruce’s “The Way It Is” thrust him into the spotlight in late ‘86, and he earned a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1987. Henley didn’t know Hornsby personally, but he was hoping they could work together, so they arranged for Henley to come over to Hornsby’s house in the San Fernando Valley.
There’s no road map for collaboration. For example, most of the classic Bernie Taupin-Elton John songs started with words; Taupin wrote the lyrics first, then Elton put music to them. For “The End of the Innocence,” the music came first: Hornsby played for Henley a track for a song that he had tried to write, but he just couldn’t get the right words. But Henley could; as he drove home from Hornsby’s house, Don re-listened to a cassette of the abandoned song and called Hornsby down the road. He had something.
As far as what that “something” turned into . . . hey, this is Don Henley we’re talking about! Of course, the lyrics are going to be brilliant!"

@@jaolin6042 wow that's really good to know because I was under the misconception that it was a soul writing of Bruce Hornsby for Don Henley so excellent job finding that information cuz it's useful
@@robbiefield7601 Brilliant song, anyway! Cheers!
Ultimate protest song than nobody understood. Listen and read....
He is a beautiful Lord of soul, his music reflects what he is, a great person!
