    The Camshaft Follower which actuates the high pressure pump has two small bearings which are lubricated with engine oil. However, these engines are infamous for soaking with unburnt gasoline the combustion chamber at cold starts causing oil dilution. This will degrade even fresh engine oil and in turn it will cause wear on the small bearings of the Camshaft Follower making them noisy. I've also noticed that the lobe ticking is louder with fresh 5W-30 Mobil 1 Extended Performance. With a 0W-30 oil, it's quiet like a mouse, can't hear it from inside the car. Thick oil may not lubricate well enough the lobe that runs the pump - it sits high up above the engine, maybe oil galley not well designed. This may cause wear in the long term. ruclips.net/video/5yi0xLo-fXw/видео.html

    Thank you for video, it's informative and great.
    I must add that for anyone with these cars and any engine you must use genuine OEM oil filters and nothing else. They are designed to maintain oil pressure and oil at cold startups that is critical. These engines have weak oil.pumps and its detrimental you use OEM oil filters. Goofy lube doesn't and others don't.
    Also use mid grade gas or better. Keep them clean as you can from the get go and you will have less issues in short run.

      I do oil changes on the Kias in my family and I order Kia/Hyundai oil filters in 6 packs from Amazon for around $37-42 or so. It varies. These things will have lifter issues without the OEM oil filters. Better than cheap gas is recommended for the GDI motors. Keep on top of the oil level because some burn a quart every 1,000 miles also. Other than that, they're good motors

      What about the 1.6GDI? G4FD

      @Steve I had read where it's important on the 2.0 and some 2.4, especially I ascertain that in general all of the engines generally have a weaker oil pump overall and because it's important for any car to have immediate oil at startup I would just stick with OEM across the board for its benefits.
      I too have the 1.6 engine and the OEM filters are no more expensive from dealer than retail stores.

      @@robbbarnett4978 but arnt the oem ones just a Mann filter? I can get Mann and it’s the exact same colour. Also pressure relief is at 1 Bar on these

    That pump is loud. It’s the nature of the beast. Insulation is for noise.

    • @Peppermint1
      @Peppermint1  Год назад +2

      But my pump is very quiet, even with the insulation removed. I think if it makes noise it's because the engine oil has been diluted and the Camshaft Follower under the pump has wear at the bearings www.thewrenchmonkey.ca/images/SPECTRA%20PREMIUM-DQjk15XG_FSA1600CF_TOP_P04_medium.jpg

    That cover is certainly not to keep it cool - the pump will stay coler without it since it will have more airflow and better air cooling.... its for sure for noise

    So that deep diesel like sound, everyone tells me it is a bad valve or a bad lifter. Is this just the sound of Hyundai's GDi?

    • @Peppermint1
      @Peppermint1  Год назад +3

      It is a sound of worn camshaft follower bearing that actuates the high pressure fuel pump. A bad valve doesn't make noise, a bad lifter will make a clacking noise and will cause the valve to chip at some point, all of a sudden usually while going uphill.

      That first sound it made when you started it up, my 2014 Santa Fe sport 2.0T FWD makes that noise when starting up and does not go away until approx. 10-15, sometimes 20 minutes into my drive. Sometimes not at all if it is cold outside. It only makes the noise when I let off the gas and slow down, or when im braking, about to come to a stop. What is this noise and how do I fix it? I’d really like to avoid going to the dealer if it’s something I could fix myself with a lift.

      I also should add- I do my oil changes every 3-5k miles. I always add Lucas during each change. I have never had any codes thrown at me, and no issues whatsoever with the engine. It’s not a knock sound, it’s more of a tick/tap. I’m having trouble finding videos to find the same sound my car is making. It’s very frustrating not being able to figure out where it’s coming from!

      @Peppermint1 that chip you are speaking of, does it happen when you smack the go pedal hard then the sound kinda comes and goes fast? Like a chirp I guess but it only stays on for .0000007 Milla seconds.

    How do you experience the reliability of these GDI engines? Is it as good as Volvo?
    A week ago I test drove a Hyundai I40 2.0 GDI. It's basically the same engine as the 2.4.
    I experienced this engine as a little bit jerky. It was mated to a manual 6 speed gear box and what I also experience with those engine is that the clutch wears out very fast.
    I think I stick with Volvo in the future. My old S60 stays super reliable even now that it has 383.000kms on the clock.

      Hyundai/Kia engines are in no way close to the strength of the P2 Volvo engines. Hyundai had massive problems with their larger 2.0 and 2.4 GDI engines, turbo and N/A, in the past 10 years and now problems surface with the 2.5 engines made for the 2020-up models, which are the same as the older 2.4, just bored out and a few improvements. Because H is forcing the design to improve mpg, the engine design is weak. Many engines with around 100,000 km have been replaced (seized) and usually one should not expect these engines to make it past the 250,000 km mark. The Volvo P2 diesel and gasoline engines were among the strongest engines made by any car maker in the 21st century. I compare them to the older Mercedes and Renault engines from the 60s and 70s (unfortunately, the P3 engines are not good and had piston ring problems). On the good side, Hyundai has quite decent transmissions and overall are not bad cars, I would say less problems than the P2 Volvo, except for the engine. I suggest you have a look on a Hyundai forum such as www.hyundai-forums.com/

      5W-30 synthetic on the 2.4
      5W-40 synthetic on the 2.0T
      Switching to synthetic at high miles will cause sudden severe oil consumption which should stop after about 15,000 miles
