    Here you go, the definitive answer as to whether that HE machine was worth it or not, some probably 10-15 years too late.
    Yes, you've been taken. All the way to the bank, where they washed out your wallet real good, then handed it back.
    OLD SCHOOL FTW! Top-loading washing machines, big incandescents, and no emissions control!

    HE Washers waste MORE water. Always losing balance because of poor suspension, so it adds water and agitates. Yeah, that's saving water alright! Smh... It doesn't matter how weak the flow is, you're getting the same water filled in anyways, so why make the pressure so WEAK?! New machines are trash. I hate them so much. It's not rocket science, you need water to wash. Plain and simple. So, tree hugging liberals; your common core math will not save you here, not there, not ANYWHERE.

      Not to mention that on my HE, I use the maximum amount of water EVERY time (every setting that uses additional water- pre wash, heavy soil, huge load etc) in an attempt to get my clothes clean, sometimes rewashing because it didn't get done right the first time. Sometimes more is just needed and better.

    Use a SpeedQueen washing machine and a clothesline. Fill the washing machine up completely during each load and wash with cold water whenever possible.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  7 лет назад +1

      Speed Queen is a great brand and if I ever need another washer, it'll be that brand. Washing full loads, but not OVERLY FULL loads (as in "let me just see if I can fit this thing in, and this, and this and this and this) is a good idea. Cold water is only to be used when washing darks so colors won't fade. All other times, warm or hot should be used to aid in the best washing action, or when the water temperature coming into the house is very low like in the winter.

  • @Goetterdaemmerung86
    @Goetterdaemmerung86 3 года назад +2

    In regards to machines only two new washers I'd consider are the Commercial Maytag, or the Speed Queen TC5.
    I read how the TC5 action was brought back by a loophole in the regulations, someone said how they MIGHT not be in production for long for these possible reasons, I seriously hope that is not the case.
    But regardless, fortunately plenty of nice mechanical direct drives can be found in appliance warehouses, I think that is where I'm going to look first.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  3 года назад +3

      I agree, those are the only 2 left that are worth anything. I hope they stay in production for a long time. But yes, there are indeed plenty of super reliable, yet easy to service direct drives out there, and plenty of parts available as well.

  • @BroadwayLTDProductions
    @BroadwayLTDProductions 4 года назад +3

    Yeah because at the end of the day you need WATER to clean and rinse clothes properly. HE is a huge scam!
    Probably the only area where HE washers actually save energy is their faster spin speeds which squeeze more water out of the cloths but it pretty much ends there.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  4 года назад +4

      Yes, to squeeze more water _that they didn't use in the first place_ out!

  • @Gowther1999

    I agree with that. High Efficiency is a lie because they use more water than Direct Drive washers because of the unnecessary load balance sensing stuff. Glad that I salvaged a Kenmore 70 Series Direct Drive that someone tossed it in the trash in Puerto Rico and repaired it for my Grandmother's house, plus I also convinced my mom to buy a Maytag Legacy Series Direct Drive for her house in Orlando, FL.

  • @EskieWolf
    @EskieWolf 7 лет назад +4

    Probably the worse part about these "High Efficiency" washers, is when (not if) they break down, they can't be repaired by folks like you and me, and therefore spend MORE money to get another set that'll break down even sooner.
    If you have a Mom and Pop appliance store in your town, go there for a washer and dryer. They may not be flashy and "efficient", but there will be models that have stood the test of time, repaired and reconditioned to be sold for a bargain (with a warranty), and they may also carry parts to repair the machines yourself if so inclined.
    The Whirlpool pair I have came from a Mom and Pop appliance store about 4 years ago, and they're still plugging along. So think of this as a customer testimonial.
    And Tab FTW!!!!

      I fully agree with everything you said there. It's all absolutely true. No overly expensive circuit boards or other superfluous garbage in the older washers. They have 1 job to do, and do it well.
      Tab, yeah, thought it was cool as a kid, but could never have it. Now I buy it regularly! I'm just really glad they still make it; still sad I can't find Five Alive anymore!

    Do you remember when I had the GE Hydrowave washer? It had a 3.8 cf tub, would you say the whirlpool direct drives have around a 3.2 cf tub and correct me if I'm wrong. It would hold 8 towels on a FULL load, smaller whirlpool direct drive can hold 10, sounds like old is better and more efficient, as we all knew that.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  7 лет назад +1

      Yeah 3.2 actually does sound about right, but I wasn't able to find the exact amount. Anyway it does not matter even if the tub is 15 cf, it's about the amount of water you put in it! And yes, both my machines hold 10 full size bath towels no problem, which is often what I was in those WashDay Wash-Ins.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  2 месяца назад

      Essentially it's just another direct drive but with an electronic control panel. The membrane buttons can fail, and so can the main control board. Can be expensive and hard to obtain. The machine adds a couple extra things in to make the owner believe the machine is actually elite, but the fact of the matter is that practically any direct drive is among the elite to begin with. Sort of like a base model car and the higher trim level with dual-zone climate controls, heated seats, sunroof, etc. EXACT same car, just has more that can break.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks Todd. And you're right. It's been said that the clock on a microwave oven uses more electricity over the life of the appliance than it ever does cooking. Probably true. Plus, those machines always have to stay live even when they are off, waiting for the couple times a week you power them on. Burning all that electricity on NOTHING. And you're also right about the motor. Motors use more current starting, so if you start the motor several times, you're increasing the total current used, each time is another spike.

    wouldnt it be less than 23.2 gallons for the wash, if the volume is being taken up by the clothes you would theoretically wash?

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  10 месяцев назад

      It might actually be a bit less. The articles to be washed do take up volume, yes, but they also soak up the water. Even if completely saturated, the washer fills to the same level each time. It's based off of the pressure of the water in the tub. Adding volume to the water makes the water level go up, like it does if you get into a filled bathtub; it displaces the water.

    • @jaykay18

      Fabric softener has a tendency to change consistency when it sits around for a while. It gets thicker and clumpier. When that happens, it "gunks up" on the dispenser.

    Why is there seperate valves for the water?

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  7 лет назад +1

      Washing machines hoses are known to burst, usually when the homeowner is either not home or away on vacation. The transformer for the valves is plugged into an outlet controlled by a timer. That way, at the expiration of the timer, they shut off. There is a rigid connection from the water supply to the valve inlet, which will not burst. In the event a hose would burst, it would be contained within an hour's time or so.

    I seriously question the “studies” that say HE machines wash better, and that you don’t need that much water to clean.
    I think something is at play here, someone brought up the idea that they are using HE detergent, and the same amount of it, in a non HE washer. If this is the case then the detergent will be seriously diluted, so of course it won’t wash super well.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  6 лет назад +1

      Through my testing, it appears that the direct drives do use more power, but it comes down to a matter of performance. You can get an HE washer and use less electricity, and have poor washing action, or get a direct drive, use more power, but actually get things DONE.

    • @WasherBoy2016
      @WasherBoy2016 6 лет назад +1

      jaykay18 and with the poor washing action, you have to rewash the clothes to get them clean. Then you use the same amount of power and twice the water as a direct drive.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  6 лет назад +1

      Yes! Here in NY, we have one of the most expensive water rates in the country (which would seem odd because we're on an island, surrounded by water). Water here goes for about a penny per gallon.
      I've calculated the electricity that even my "non-energy-efficient" uses approximately 10 cents of electricity per entire load. We also have high electric rates, mind you.
      If you figure that water is about 50 gallons, we're up to 60 cents. Then, detergent is going to cost about another 25 cents. So about 85 cents for a load of laundry around here. Fabric softener, scent boosters, and laundry additives available for an additional cost.
      Seems that the water is the most expensive part of the equation around here.

    Funny enough my parents own that exact model of he washer! Now there’s one thing I’d like to point out, and I’m in support of the direct drives don’t get me wrong, I own two of them! But he washers on a normal cycle, do use less water for sure, we have a gallons per day meter on out water softener and with nothing else changing but the washer used. Either the he machine or the direct drive, the direct drive did use more more. BUT!! It cleans significantly better, AND took less time to do it, he machines do use less what but ur sacrificing cleaning performance greatly. Although we don’t have any complaints abt our GE machine it does good, the deep fill is a lie might I add it never deep fills when we ask..

      Yeah it's not enough water. You can't wash a full load of towels in 1 cup of water, it's impossible.

So help me understand how you using two washers, with no clothes in them, from different manufacturers, different water supplies, different meters, and so on and so on, gives even remotely viable results? Instead of going through all of the rigamaroll of using a hose, and two different people with two washers, just read the water meter when washing your load, see what it reads and do the math... Both tests were done without linens, so that's a moot point. Regarding the rinse, it depends on the machine. The Whirlpool top loader that I have uses exactly the same water to rinse as it does to wash. Newer machines have a "fabric softener" switch. When on, it does a full refill and agitate cycle once again. With the switch off, it simply sprays while the basket spins, which is nowhere near as effective.
      The other gentleman's machine was set with that switch ON, so it would refill for rinse the same amount, making this very valid.

    I’m a little late to the party
    But your math and method is off.
    You need to understand how a washer works and why. As well as exactly what you get with an HE washer.
    HE washers have to by law have a high efficiency setting. As in a setting that is going to save you overall threw out the cycle.
    What does this mean?
    One more efficient motors. Two lower water temp usage (temp setting the washer is using are lower than before. Using mixing valves. So the washer draws less hot water from your household hot water)
    And less water
    Now first an foremost on most of them machines you can by pass the Most efficient cycle by selecting a larger wash load, second rinses. Deep rinse cycles. Ect ect.
    So where is you mistake?
    First on the spray rinse. Your calculating water flow from a garden hose direct off a tap.
    Your not factoring in that the fact that the washer water valves are restricted and let in less water over the same period. (Initial fill and deep rinse cycles will use the pressure switch to monitor volume. But the spray rinse sprays for a set time)
    And the big one. You took the washers initial fill and multiplied by 2 to determine water use. The will be reasonably accurate for your standard washer but way way off on your HE, as no proper HE washer gives a deep rinse on your preset cycles. They only do a spray rinse. (Again for a preset time not a volume full) you can by pass this and select a deep rinse cycle but then your not properly using the machine as it was intended.
    So if you want to get a proper reading of water usage you should have two meters one on the hot and one on the cold. And let the washer do it’s own thing.
    If you use the proper he setting and auto filling on your HE washer you will notice a large difference in water usage.
    PS. Your washer that you first showed filling. Was over full Water level should not be at the bottom roll of the drum as it was. I’d recommend calling an appliance tech and having them check your pressure switch and tubing because it was slow to respond in switching to agitate.

      I think you're not only late to the game, you've missed the tailgate party as well. The video I showed in the end of the washer I compared it to was set to deep fill, and deep fill for rinse, so yes, multiplying the wash fill by 2 did the trick for that.
      I did not use hot water at all for this test, so no need to measure that.
      The spray rinse was certainly not as accurate because the full flow of water from the hose was allowed through my meter, but the washer will attenuate the flow slightly, so it actually uses less.
      I have no need for an appliance tech, I can do all my own work on the machines, and have. If you look through other videos on my channel you'll see I've done a number of washer repairs for people. I've also specifically adjusted the water level in this washer to where you see it because I WANTED it set there.

      jaykay18 so I’m confused by what your trying to prove with your video.
      You purposefully by pass the benefits of a water saving machine and claim on you tube for all to see that there at no water saving benefits to an HE machine.
      Which is just false. If used properly there are water savings to be had.
      For 75% of the washing most people do you don’t need that much water. But the washers have those settings so you can have it when you do need excess water. (Bulky or excessively dirty items.)

      Water is what cleans the articles in the machine. Less water means it doesn't clean as effectively. An HE washer left at its default settings will leave the articles still dirty and dingy after an hour and a half of all that "washing". This video proves that even if you set your HE machine to "non-HE mode" with deep fills and rinses, it's actually LESS efficient than the old standby top loader.
      I have a fuel efficient car, in fact it has 6 gears. I let it get up to top gear as often as it can, yet it still averages only 6 or 7 MPG over my classic, with an engine that was never designed for fuel-efficiency, and has TWICE the displacement. Not terribly efficient. Personally, I'd rather drive the classic around, get my 10 MPG, and get there in style and with performance. Top gear in that car is 3, no overdrive or other shenanigans.

      jaykay18 you missed my point with the car analogy
      If used properly (loading, clothing type, soap quality). An HE washer will clean as well as an old one. Without the excessive ware on your clothes. No this doesn’t mean that it will clean every things as well. There is always a trade off. If you work on a farm or all day in the mud and grime then yes on the HE settings it won’t clean as well. There is always a trade off. But again that doesn’t mean if used properly there is no benefit. As you eluding to. It’s just false.
      Learn how the washer is designed to run. Run it properly. HE washers are not for everyone. But that doesn’t mean they work for no one. .

      They only work for those who are forced to use them and believe in the hype. Because that's my point--I'd rather have a machine do its job than save water.
