    This poor direct-drive Whrilpool Washer has seen it all over the years since about 1995. Beaten, abused, and worn out, the motor coupler finally let go. This video shows what to test and listen for to verify your machine has a broken motor coupler.

    I had to do a motor coupler on my aunts Kenmore. I was really supprised at how easy it was to completely disassemble the machine. it probably took no more than 20 minutes tops to do the whole thing and I didn't even watch a you tube video on how to do it first. I just started taking it apart until I found something broken. The most time consuming part of the whole repair was the trip to Sears to get the new part.

      These machines were designed very well. They were designed to be reliable, and easy to be serviced. That's all we possibly need of any type of appliance today. But instead they make it near impossible to service, and certainly not very reliable at all.

    I’m sure you seen me before, I’m just here looking at your older videos, but I sure miss those machines, I found a machine just like this in the garbage (I know I told you) the timer was bad in it, it would not advance through the cycles so I wanted to work properly and it was $140 not sure if it’s the right one but my parents said it’s too much, like what?! It’s less expensive than the newer machines they are making!!! Whatever goes wrong I would fix it

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  4 года назад +1

      Yes, I've seen your name. I remember you. $140 is CHEAP considering what even a base model piece of crap HE washer would cost. These were some of the best machines EVER made, period.

    • @littygangster1885
      @littygangster1885 4 года назад

      jaykay18 I liked your comment on that, when they started introducing these SUCH CRAPPY MACHINES, I was upset and sad, never wanted these to go, they say it’s too expensive but if you think about it, it’s really not, i want them to bring it back! All I want is it to fill to the selected level, and the correct temperature (no temperature control) then select your cycle you would like, then it starts to fill (no load sensing crap) washes your clothes, rinses your clothes and spins your clothes, that’s all there is to it on on old school, now we have “high efficiency” washers that have all this temperature control and auto sensing, longer to wash your clothes! So there you go NEW SCHOOL VS OLD SCHOOL. New school: BURN🔥🔥 Old school: ❤️❤️❤️KEEP AS LONG AS POSSIBLE!!!

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  4 года назад

      With an old school washer, you can do laundry the way you want to do it. An HE machine will do what it wants no matter what you choose.

    I remembered when my Godmother's washer broke. I don't remember the problem or the manufacturer of the machine. I know it was a traditional 80's or 90's top-loader with mechanical controls. She joked with me by telling me to fix it. I was six years old when that happened so of course I didn't know how to fix it. I wished I knew how to fix it back then because I would have. Today I would be able to fix it. I'm sure by now she got it fixed or replaced with another reliable machine hopefully.
    If the tub break is worn out, will it affect other components of the machine and cause more problems if not fixed right away?

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  7 лет назад

      Yeah I've had those sort of comments passed by me over the years as well.
      If the tub brake is worn, the tub may start to index when agitating, and just in general you'll get very poor wash action. It depends on the actual design of the machine, but oftentimes one bad part won't lead to early failure of another, as bad brake rotors on a car will chew up new brake pads in no time.

    • @Sharkie626
      @Sharkie626 7 лет назад +1

      Usually, the best way to fix a worn brake is to buy a new spin tube, I think some websites do sell the brake assembly itself.

    Ahh the whirlpool DD. Love that kine! glad it's being fixed. Let's hope it doesn't erupt in flames (almost), like mine did!! HAHA.
    (Speaking of, we STILL do not have a washer. We are saving up so we don't have to get a POS washer. We're saving for the Speed Queen 92 series top load.)

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  7 лет назад

      Your DD was the only one I ever heard of having said problems. If that's one out of how many million, I think that's a pretty good track record.
      There's a saying out there that goes something like "the sweetness of low price is long superseded by the bitterness of poor quality." That means you're on the right track. Saving up for a Speed Queen so that you won't endure poor quality. Worth it!

    I jave a whirlpool that is neither draining or spinning I checked the pump seems fine also I looked at the coupler I think it needs replacing some of the rubber holes are out of round. How would I fix it if it's not draining?

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  6 лет назад

      If the motor coupler is bad, the machine will still drain. The drain pump runs on the shaft coming out the other side of the motor. There's no coupler for that, it's directly driven.
      If the motor runs but it's not pumping at all and you definitely have it on "Spin", you could have any of the following issues:
      1. Bad drain pump.
      2. Clogged drain hose, either from tub to pump, or from pump to outlet hose end.
      3. Clogged sewer/drain line in the house.
      4. Unlikely, but possible bad timer. Sometimes, the timer will "lose sync" and even though the pointer will be pointing to spin it's actually trying to agitate. When the motor is in agitation, it spins the drain pump backwards so water won't drain.
      If you need to drain it because it won't do it itself, you can bail it out with a container, or remove the drain hose and lower it to the floor and let gravity do the work, but that's going to flood the floor, so unless you have a floor drain that'll do no good.

    • @joshuamullin4804
      @joshuamullin4804 6 лет назад

      jaykay18 last night I took out the motor and transmission I turned the timer to spin and the rod spun when activated. This being opposite to the fact that when it was installed moments earlier it would not spin the tub so where should I go from here?

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  6 лет назад

      Possible bad spin clutch I'd say.

    • @joshuamullin4804
      @joshuamullin4804 6 лет назад

      jaykay18 I checked that and it is firm not loose the only part that has been possibly bad that I have seen is the black rubber piece that had a 3 holes out of round and 3 holes perfectly machined round.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  6 лет назад

      Inspect the motor coupler VERY carefully where it attaches to the shafts, and see if there's a hairline crack.

    Best way to clean a machine?

    • @jaykay18

      The easiest way is the Tide Washing Machine cleaner which you can find in any good grocery store.
      The best way requires disassembling the machine and good old elbow grease.

    • @jaykay18

      The owner of this machine actually contemplated replacing this machine when it broke, and went so far as to go online and just see what's out there and what they cost. Then I came into the picture. It needed a motor coupler and a set of agitator dogs. Then entire machine could be fixed up like brand new for a total of $12 in parts. Yep, $12 was going to be the deciding factor on junking this whole machine. Glad I stepped in and saved it. It has been repaired, and there will be videos on it in the future.

    Do you have any idea how the motor coupler broke?

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  7 лет назад

      The machine was beaten and abused. It's never seen anything but a full load, and any time there's a full load, it's WELL overfilled. Too much bulk at one time, old non-metal-reinforced motor coupler, and it finally let go.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  2 года назад +1

      If the coupler breaks immediately, you have a bad transmission. If it lasts for a while, the machine is very clearly being overloaded. Wash more loads with less in them.

      @@AlabanzasyAdoración7 It's a much more involved job. But, it will be worth it, you cannot get another machine that will wash as well as this. I don't have any videos on the transmission but you can watch videos by theapplianceman and he has some that show the transmission.
