There's an important thing that was missed in this video! The instructions from Cascade are telling you to use way too much detergent. I've made a follow-up video about detergent dosing and also addressed a lot of your concerns in it. ruclips.net/video/Ll6-eGDpimU/видео.html If packs were sold with, maybe, tear-off baby packs meant to be thrown in along with the main wash, I'd be elated. And, to be clear, it's not like I think packs, tabs, whatever don't work - I'm sure plenty of you have fine experiences with them. They just... well as I said they don't make sense to me. Not for a dishwasher, anyway!
I love your videos and you always make me laugh. ...and I share your ire with these pods, we switched back to regular liquid soap after some experiments of our own.
Is there any way I can contact you in a more professional way? I did a project on WED for my final project this semester and found some information on the Capital Subway in my research. (I also referenced your haunted mansion video in my paper, so your work is greatly appreciated!)
I use the packs but I have never just tossed them in the main body of the dishwasher. I have always put them in the detergent area of the dishwasher. I have not been told otherwise and I never really stopped to look at the instructions and these packs work great unless they have sat too many years as I do have a habit of only buying them on sale.
Now maybe tell your wife (or you, if you're the culprit) to stop letting your dirty dishes sit around drying out and then you won't need an extra wash cycle to clean your dishes.
I don't know why but my two year old loves this video. He has watched it during breakfast the past three days straight. Thanks for the learning and the chance to drink my coffee.
@@xanderplayz3446 welcome to modern parenting. The number of people who do this at restaurants or hotels isn't small. To be fair, Alec's videos might even have somewhat of a positive effect. Idk.. Better than many shows for kids.
Okay, you actaully made me look at my Dishwashers Owner's manual. This is a BOSCH and I am located in Germany, for reference. The dishwasher does not have a pre-wash compartment. In the instructions it says (roughly translated) "Attention: due to the different activation time of detergent tablets you might have inferior cleaning power with short-running programs. We recommend powder detergent". Furthermore: "If you use powder detergent, we recommend pouring in a little extra directly into the tub for intensive cleaning, in addition to the detergent dispenser".
I suspect the bit about short-running programs has something to do with the water temperature again since hot water should dissolve the detergent tablets faster. I'm German too but have yet to ever buy or install a dishwasher so I don't know if ours are usually hooked up to hot water too.
@@TechnologyConnections It's just uncommon at least in German dishwashers. It is not really necessary, at least with the programmes used by the dishwashers here. On the other hand, using dishwasher salt for descaling the water is absolutely normal and seems quite uncommon in the US. It's just interesting to see the different "traditions" that have evolved in dishwasher operations. You would expect that how to wash dishes would be quite the same all over the world. So for the Bosh-Models having only one compartment seems to be more a thing of that tradition and not so much from giving into pods.
What I can't believe is the pod manufacturers haven't got onto this and developed pre wash pods which are 1/4 the size, another consumer product right there!
and they could even allow consumers to remain lazy by not even tearing them apart, some models just place the small side in the pre-wash side, other models without a prewash slot just leave it dangling out LOL still using cascade powder . . . i can find it at only one out of FIVE walmarts around here
@@red2theelectricboogaloo961 Think you missed his point entierly there bud. Hes saying they could make the smaller packs with almost no extra effort and sell both. A whole new product line with almost no effort to develope
I tried the tips in this video, running the tap hot first, and added pre-wash soap, and damn this really helped. My dishes and the dishwasher tub itself are spotless after the wash. Good stuff.
Another tip: if your dish washer smells like wet dog, clean the filter, then spritz little bleach in the tub and run a rinse & hold cycle with high heat and without any dishes.

Because of your video, we checked our GE dishwasher - and yep - there's a depression in the dispenser lid for the pre-wash cycle. And - oh, yeah - filters. I always thought that I didn't quite grasp how a dishwasher gets the job done and this video proves it. I'll never scrape my plates again before loading and I'm going to start using the gel detergent instead of the packs. And since it's only about 1 gal of water/cycle I'm not going to obsess any longer about the tens of gallons of water that I thought was being wasted! This is one of your most practical and fascinating videos. Much appreciated.
@Tom Says I don’t actually care either and I don’t think it matters in the context of what he was doing. I was making a point about how I’ve had that happen in a customers home with hard wood and that’s what it made me think of.
Just a quick note, my girlfriend and I just watched this video together. When I looked over at her at the end, she was on her phone already buying liquid detergent. Good job, youve changed our dishwashing habits!
@Egon Freeman Not really. Science is not stopping the process halfway through, and saying "see? This removes more at the beginning, therefore, without testing the end result, I proclaim it to be better". Science is doing a ton of experiments with and without pre-wash detergent, having the machine finish its cycle, and seeing how often you get dirty dishes after the full cycle. Exactly the kind of testing that the companies who make these pods (and traditional detergent) do to ensure their product meets expectations. I'm pretty sure those pods are formulated stronger to compensate for the lack of pre-wash detergent. In all my testing the only stuff that came out still dirty was charred bits on frying pans that wouldn't come off even after two more cycles in an otherwise empty machine. A smaller amount of extra detergent during pre-wash won't help if two full doses of detergent and two full cycles fail to do the job. For some things you still need steel wool and elbow grease. For all the rest, these pods seem to work just fine.
Hey! 3 years into the future! I watched this 3 years ago when it came out, and I can say I'm STILL not using the pods at all, not even for my laundry. It saved me a TON of money and I don't even need to throughly clean my dishes before the dishwasher. My dishwasher came with my house and it's an old white appliance that's old and yellow. Thought it was broken at first and almost bought a new one, but after learning how to properly use it, it STILL works like a champ. Thanks for this tip you've really saved me a ton of money!
I have never owned a dishwasher, either in the states or in Europe, where I did not have to wash the dishes before putting them in the washer. All those things are good for is rinsing and sterilizing. EDIT: Ok. I decided to try out your advice, Technology Connections. I put my dirty dishes in the washer, not even scraping them. Ran the hot water until it came up, and put a pack in the pre-wash and the wash receptacles. My washer only has a bottom sprayer, so I was not full of hope. But, one hour later, I open my machine, and Voila! Everything was spanking clean! Wow! This will save me a lot of labor and time, which is important as a single father of three. Can't thank you enough!
My great grandfather used to sell dishwashers. Remember in this video, they say the physics of dishwashers haven’t changed much 😉 He used to have a party, and my great grandmother bake a fullsized chocolate cake (frosting and everything), which he would take the plate and whole cake and set it inside the dishwasher. Run a cycle, and when it was done, the plate was clean and the cake was gone.
It will also save a LOT of water. Handwashing dishes uses a lot more water than a dishwasher, and if you use warm or hot water you are also paying to heat that extra water as well.
I just moved into a rental with a dishwasher for the first time last month and I absolutely didn't know anything about how to use one. I always had a lot of doubts about those little colorful packs. So I stumbled on your video trying to figure it out! And boy am I glad I did, I tried it for the first time last night and it worked like a dream. Washing dishes remains one of my least favorite things to do, and now I only have to do it for a few things that aren't dishwasher safe!! We have moderately hard water here, and even then filling up the cups only halfway worked perfectly. Thank you so much for this and your follow up video!
Haha, the "Please do comment about [differences], it boosts engagement" remark @1:37 is such an outright cynical back-handed compliment, I could have sworn Alec was from the other side of the pond. Not so different now, aren't we?! And look at me, I too am boosting engagement!
@Jonas Hack Popcorn button being BS on most microwaves for starters. He made a video appreciating her coffee machine for the same shit she loved it for, etc
OK, hear me out - a detergent tank. You just fill that thing once a month from a large bottle, and the dishwasher adds as much as it finds necessary, at any stage it wants.
This exists in the restaurant industry... Would love to see it implemented in a residential washer. They also make clothes washing machines with the same "autofill" for soap
tl;dr from both this and the followup: - Don't worry about rinsing dishes before putting it into the dishwasher - Heat sink water before turning on Dish Washer - Use the 'Normal Setting' on your dishwasher to make sure the pre-wash happens - Use powder Detergent (DON'T use dish soap, pods, or gels) - Place in both the main wash, and pre-wash cups - Don't use TOO much - the amount you need correlates with how hard your water is. If you have a powdery residue or film on dishes, you may be using too much. Try filling it halfway - Don't sweat whether or not it has phosphates - Get rinse-aid, it can not be included in detergent - Consider getting a dishwasher cleaning product, like Glisten Dishwasher cleaner
Wdym? He said powder or gels were good, the only things he advised against were pods and dish soap, the kind you use to hand clean dishes which bubbles a lot. He never said anything about dishwasher soap as a gel.
A long, long time ago the appliance department at Sears had transparent models on display. I believe they had one dishwasher and one washing machine. They would just run all day and it was mesmerizing.
Random addition: I used to work in a Petrochemical lab and our Miele lab glassware washer was just a fancy dishwasher. It could clean crude oil off glass with one dishwasher tablet/ pack.
@Biden DidntWin I didn't know about running the hot water before starting the dishwasher until recently. Sometimes I forget anyways. My dishwasher cleans everything perfectly either way. Been using powdered detergent my whole life. Also, according to my dishwasher manual, you don't need as much detergent if you live in an area with soft water. I live in an area with very soft water, so I started filling the pre-wash/main-wash cups 1/3rd full or less. Still cleans dishes perfectly.
Lost my dad to cancer this fall, and this video is one of the ones I'd rush to show him. We always loved discussing the inner workings of appliances, and he was always the Guardian of the Dishwasher, knowing how things needed to be stacked to fit as much as possible in one load, and not hinder the arms or anything. Leave it to you to show me the inner workings of a dishwasher. Seeing the top arm tilt by the jet from the lower also made me realize what that periodic clunking sound from mine is. Pre-wash detergent will forever be used in my household, and god damn do I miss my dad.

We’ve been putting two dishwasher tabs (one in the compartment, and one in the cutlery rack) this whole time, not realizing why it worked so much better this way. Thanks for saving us future money!
Ive never understood why the tabs are so popular in the first place. Always just bought powder. Its dirt cheap, always worked fine, and its not exactly difficult to just pour powder into the dispenser. Never knew about also pouring the powder in the prewash till just now watching this video though, so thats pretty neat.
@@Inbal_FeuchtwangerWhen I bought a new dishwasher in 2020 (Kitchen Aid) the salesman recommended that I use powdered detergent and only 1TBSP because of the water qualities in Chicago. I currently use the gel (ALDI has a cheap house brand) and it works great. I’m now going to start adding a squirt to the tub for the pre wash.
This whole video is about dish washers and detergent packs, and the most interesting takeaway I got was actually the little fun fact about eggs acting as an emulsifier in baked goods.
Eggs (and lots of other things) contain Lecithin. They work by being two-part molecules where one half of the molecule attracts water and the other half attracts oil, therefore will grab both at the same time.
Man you hit everything right on the head!! I’m a appliance repair tech and everything you said is true! The only thing I would add is, I have found that all the detergents that have an extra “scent” like lemon scent, lavender scent, orange scent leave a nasty residue over time. Avoid those as well! There are also “organic” ones that don’t do a good job. Just things to keep in mind.
I literally do not want a dish cleaner that leaves behind any kind of scent, because I know I'm going to be eating that scent and I don't want it in my body
This video actually changed my life. I never realized that I had been snookered by the pretty colors and fancy bullshit and actually believed packs were somehow better than normal detergent, then got mad that my dishwasher wasn't working properly. no joke, it's 6 AM, can't sleep, just watched this, my family hates doing dishes, and I just took the racks out of my dishwasher to peer inside and find out how best to use this one. there isn't a prewash tub, so I just started a load with detergent in the main release thingy, and squirted a little onto the door itself, and didn't rinse the dishes I put in there at all. if this legit just ended my family's war of frustration on the dishes, then you sir, I like you.

I had my class watch this video and the second one on too much detergent. I have my own channel on youtube on how to service appliances tmm appliance repair. One note the Frigidaire dishwasher if you opened the bottom where the macerator blade is there is a plastic ball which is used every time the dishwasher stops it moves and blocks either the upper or lower arm for cleaning and that's how it shifts water from upper to lower and visa a versa. A) My wife totally needs to see this: scrubs the dishes before they go in the dw, tosses a pack directly into the tub, and wonders why the dishes still aren't clean. B) *Part* of the "dishes must be scrubbed clear before entering the dishwasher" may come from the commercial kitchen side. Those washers are *basically* not designed to do any scrubbing (that's what the sprayguy (me for 5 years!) is for). The washer is only designed to break down any remaining films and sanitize the dishes in very quick order.
It would take us at least this long to build up a full load. I just prefer handwashing because I can do it quicker. Our apartment hot water takes forever to warm up and it would waste a ton to run it. We have to use an electric kettle to make wash water hot enough.
I knew I had become a grown-up and left behind the innocence of childhood when I bought a new dishwasher and started watching videos about how to make it run at its best.

Better late than never. I watched your above video yesterday (5th December 2023) and was totally fascinated with you research and findings. I did not know that there were such great differences between US and European Dishwashers. I find the idea of a compartment for pre-wash powder and also a sterilise cycle are things we could use here, but drawing hot water from the tap and not having built in water softener, well you can keep those ideas on your side of the pond. Today I used out and and after a search, I bought a 1,5kilo bag of Dishwasher Powder for €2,85 giving me 100 washes. I normally pay around €8.00 for 50 Tabs. So far so good. I will now test with 15gr Powder per load and a tablespoon of Powder for the pre-wash. wish me luck I have a Bosch machine WITH salt softener and no separate compartment for cleaner Thanks for the excellent presentation
Alec: Spends hours disassembling machines for the purpose of illustration. (Edit: and also runs dish soap through his dishwasher) Also Alec: Pays for multiple stock videos of people hand washing dishes so he doesn't have to film it himself.

My Miele dishwasher has a salt compartment but no designated pre wash space. I checked the manual and it says that you can put detergent on the door if the dishes are very dirty. It also says that the difference of powders / gels vs pods is that you can tune the amount of detergent. So yes, Miele is with you on this one. Great video by the way!
Came here looking for this comment. As someone who can’t help but pre-rinse the stuff that I put in my dishwasher, I was really hoping to see how well the full dishwasher cycle handled those plates!
The tests with extra-dirty dishes is a great demo! When I was a kid, I may have used liquid dish soap in a dishwasher. This may have caused the machine to emit a tsunami of suds which might have spread from the kitchen to the living room carpet, which may have led to my parents being just a bit unhappy. I definitely never did that... again.

@@alexdhall We don't really have driers in Germany. Some people do, but their use is frowned upon. Greenery compels Germans to hang up their laundry to dry. Especially if the neighbours are watching.
25:25 I can actually speak with authority on this! As I watch this video, in the background is the lake that was the cause for the phosphate ban! Where I live is the first place in the US that banned the sale of phosphate detergents with more than 10 ppb phosphate. The reason for this is because of leech line septic systems out here, which completely bypass the county sewage system (which removes phosphates from sewage before draining the water back into the aquifer). The phosphate content of the lake was astronomically higher than it should have been, and algae blooms were raging out of control. Fish were even drowning due to lack of oxygen in the water. The phosphate content was pulling oxygen out of solution in the lake. I, like many others, was pissed off at first that our detergent became useless powder over night. The detergent really doesn't clean as well without the phosphates, and causes a lot of dishes to get washed twice, or rinsed by hand first. But the benefits are obvious to the lake. The algae blooms are way down, seaweed growth is up and fish populations are doing well. Even better, the county is no longer allowed to dump excess cleaning products directly into the lake (which would cause huge foamy patches of caustic cleaner). Also, the county has to pull 10% less phosphate out of the cleaning system, but this is really just pushing that cost on the consumer who now buys more detergent. In the end, it was more than worth it to have shitty dishwasher detergent. A lot of us live on the lake, and we don't like seeing huge patches of chemicals floating around, and we also don't like dead fish and massive algae blooms. I believe other rural cities with natural aquifers have also followed suit too. I know a lot of hippies will just refuse to buy phosphate because they think its harmful to them for some reason (its not). Really, its only imperative to use non-phosphate cleaner if your waste water is run directly into the earth and not through a waste treatment center. When i lived in town (and had city waste water) i used regular detergent because the waste treatment plant removes ALL of it before returning the water to the aquifer. When i'm using a septic tank system, i use non-detergent because i like my lake full of live fish and not algae.
Thats some good extra info. Although phosphates themselves do not improve cleaning. They simply make cleaning when using "bad" water work better. If you used distilled water in your dishwasher I am almost certain the cleaning would be just as effective as before the ban. However in areas where water pH is off and/or dissolved mineral content is high than the phosphates act as a buffer and mineral suspender. Without the phosphates a lot of the detergents action is less effective due to suboptimal water conditions. Rinse aids do help with this in part simply because it increases the total volume of chemicals added allowing for greater ph correction.
I mean, I'm not sure why you think that just living by the lake where phosphates were raging out of control gives you any kind of authority on the subject, but, sure, okay.
@@UnitSe7en 'Armchair lakeside resident' *is* a new one, but it checks out. But yeah, we should call out the act of stealing valor from dishwasher manufacturers when we see it.
@Benjamin Sims Yeah, I noticed he loaded his sideways, usually, I've loaded a dishwasher with plates facing forward. It'll probably differ by model though.
I wish I had a dishwasher to use. My mom does and I'll take a look at hers and see if she too needs to swap detergents because she does like using the pods as well. But she also lives in an apartment so that dishwasher has had many other owners and the thing might need an internal clean in general. She sometimes uses it, sometimes washes by hand.

Dishwashers of that size weigh upwards of 80 pounds, and that weight is unbalanced, making them quite cumbersome. Knowing that, are we just going to ignore how he straight man-moded that one up on the table? Well hoisted, sir. Well hoisted.
Nah, most inexpensive plastic ones like Frigidaire etc, usually weigh like 35-45lbs. Maybe 50 tops. It's the stainless models that weigh a ton. Taking the door off nearly cuts that weight in half(it's also why it needs assist springs to aide in closing it). The rest of the weight is in the bottom where the pumps and valves are. At any rate, they're so lightweight that the door can tip them forward if not secured properly. This explains the straps at the top edge of the tub where it meets the countertop. They're not too heavy, just really cumbersome.
@@B1GDaddyFatStax Fair. But, he still had the door on that one. Meaning, he still dead lifted that thing, with only minor difficulty. Still a fine hoist, for something that awkwardly weighted.

Could we just take a minute to appreciate the fact that the guy literally cut a hole in a dishwasher and closed it up with a transparent sheet so we could see what actually goes on inside? Never cared for dishwashers, nor have I ever owned one(begrudgingly), but this was brilliant.
This was a very persuasive argument for using the prewash function. Something also worth checking is if the seal on your dishwasher's detergent dispenser is functional. I would rather not use packs, but I've gravitated towards them recently because my dishwasher is an ultra-cheap model (landlord provided) that immediately oozes out any gel you put in. I figure the packs are a little more likely to not get swept away in the pre-wash, and they're at least not running down the door as soon as I close it. You can check this with a gel by filling it up, closing the doors, and then not running the dishwasher immediately. Check back in a few minutes to see if you have a mass goo escape on your hands. If so, there's no way that gel is making it all the way to the main wash
I'm impressed with the way he just yoinked the dishwasher up on the counter. If I had done that I'd be getting myself an appointment for physical therapist for Christmas.
It being mainly just plastic certainly helped him yoink it. I had a similar experience when taking my old exhaust air tumble dryer out of the basement. Was light as a feather compared to the replacement condenser heat pump model that weighs 50kg. Let's wait until his new dishwasher breaks and lure him into making a video about it for comparision :D
Sidenote for people who have accidentally done this, or for some reason had to deal with this. In short, salt screws up the suds surface tension after you scoop out the majority of what you can.
This video and it’s follow up have finally made my dishwasher worth using. I was seriously pre washing, washing in the dishwasher, and post washing. I was ready to rip it out from under my counter and set it on fire in the yard. However, after cleaning my filter, using dishwasher cleaner, running the kitchen sink on hot, and switching to using powder detergent in both cups, and now it’s actually washing the dishes. Thank you.
Might also be a problem of American models. I never had to pre-wash back here in Europe. You scrape off the bigger stuff into the bin and into the machine the plate goes. Comes out clean even if it had been sitting there, waiting for said machine to fill up for 2-3 days or so. But I always add extra salt (not table salt) and extra liquid to make the glasses shine.
You seriously might have just changed my life when it comes to dishwashers... When I was growing up my mom's famous saying was " It's not a garbage disposal, You have to rinse the dishes before you put them in"... Based off what you've explained and I've seen, that's exactly what they are, A big fat garbage disposal that cleans your dishes. I am shook. I must spend 30 minutes scrubbing and rinsing all the dishes before I stick them into the dishwasher I've been wasting my time energy, and water and now I get to do exactly what you get to do, stick them in dirty, I can't wait to see how it works!!!!
Got a bunch of friends who share a house. Couple weeks ago they were complaining about their dishwasher, and I told them about this. Apparently it worked so well that when I was over yesterday, one of them stopped another friend (who didn’t live there) from washing a dish, saying “we have a new thing with the dishwasher, just put it in there and they come out perfect”. Your thing worked so well that they actively stopped someone else from washing their dishes
Shout out to all the others who found themselves 32 minutes into a rant about why we should use both detergent spaces, and still engaged and fascinated. How does he do this???

I like how every American household item seems to come with some kind of deadly shredder built in. In Europe we mainly learn about them in Horror movies like Gremlins 2.
My kitchen has two wash basins, one with a shredder and one without a shredder to dry dishes. My family uses the one w/o the shredder to wash and the the other to dry but complain about food build up and clogging. We also have a dishwasher but is used as an extra unnecessary storage compartment.
Ironically, these shredders would be more useful in typical Europeans households since they're usually made of brick/concrete without easy access to clogged pipes, unlike American homes which are made of paper and wood.
Finally, a youtuber that did some research, and concluded that their knowledge is only limited to a certain country. My dishwasher in the NL uses cold water
@@georgedeaney7270 I can believe that, given the energy efficiency of those whole-house water heaters (especially if you have an older one, like we do)
Since the eletric power prices in germany are pretty high it is cheaper to hook the washer on the hot water outlet. Provided, you heat your water by wood, gas or oil. It's also supposed to shorten the actual washing cycle, since the heatup is shortend.
As children, me and my brother used to fight over who got to put the soap into the little compartment and snap the little door closed and I never quite knew why there was an extra cup with no lid. Now I do. Thanks for answering a question that's been in my brain since I was 4 :)
Same. I’d legit get mad if my mom didn’t call me to put the little pod in. And I also always wondered what the point of the little extra cup was- now I know.
Your plates should be angled down so the spray hits their faces. (source: I spent years doing technical animations - including of dishwasher operation for Frigidaire.)
@Tom Says 24:38 although, like seth said, if you’re by yourself, it’s really not a bad idea to hand wash as you go. i know because i do this myself, anytime i cook i hand wash the pots and pans. but this is really just to save room in my dishwasher; the dishwasher absolutely saves money on water.
But won't most modern dishwashers have a top and bottom rotating sprayer? I can only imagine the benefit of doing this would be to assist food particles to fall off the primary dirty surface of the dish a little better .
@@Syndicalism - They often even have a middle sprayer. But, the middle one sprays mosly upward to clean items in the top rack. And, the top sprayer is usually just enough to keep crud from settling on the tops (bottoms) of your cups in the top rack. The main sprayer at the bottom gives you most of your cleaning power for the bottom rack.
If you ever run out of video ideas, I would legit listen to you tell me how all household appliances work. I bought a dishwasher after watching this.....several times......because it was so fascinating. Currently trying to fix my washing machine and wish I knew the mechanics as good as I know my dishwasher thanks to this video!
People overfill the cups with powder and over time that causes the door to fail and stick closed. Dishwasher repair guys have long been recommending liquid detergent and, since their introduction, pods. I expect it's one part mild convenience, one part "my coworker said his repair guy told him to use these", and one part store shelf prevalence.
The problem is, if the consumer decides how much detergent is enough, they could damn well save some money and only put half of the recomended dosage per cycle in there. And still get clean dishes and laundry! That could kill all the poor chemical corporations that only make a few billion $ of profit each year...
@@jrootabega What the hell, pods really use bleach? Why would anyone put bleach in the dishwasher? Maybe I'm too old-fashioned, but I've never even once encountered detergent with bleach (homemade and store-bought).
I've lived in Japan for 10 years now and I haven't seen a dishwasher that entire time. I only watched this video because I wanted to be reminded about what dishwashers were like
I lived in Japan for over 5 years, and while they were pretty rare, my flat did come with a dishwasher. However, it was a tiny countertop machine, and I only ever used it a couple of times. Probably because without an oven, I used far fewer dishes.
@@ambercolie1200 It is true that there are small tabletop dishwashers, but places where they are sold and people who have actually bought them are few and far inbetween. Perhaps the people who owned your flat believed you would feel more accustomed to the place if it had a dishwasher and got one for you.
@@TheNewRobotMaster It probably wasn't for me specifically, but that housing agency rented to a lot of U.S. military personnel. A couple of the flats I looked at even had ovens.
I'm now the only person in my house who doesn't use dishwasher pods, and I can't convince anyone to sit through this because "I watched a deep dive on how dishwashers work" wasn't super convincing. Love the channel, keep up the good work!
I didn't expect to spend my Christmas Eve watching a video about how dishwashers work, but here we are. Edit: also, as a commercial dishwasher, seeing those dishes you prepared for the test gave me severe PTSD.

(I also referenced your haunted mansion video in my paper, so your work is greatly appreciated!)
I was going to suggest mini packs either in a separate section of the container or as you suggested tear-offs
I use the packs but I have never just tossed them in the main body of the dishwasher. I have always put them in the detergent area of the dishwasher. I have not been told otherwise and I never really stopped to look at the instructions and these packs work great unless they have sat too many years as I do have a habit of only buying them on sale.

WHY DO THEY NOT HAVE A PRE-WASH AREA, THEN? Ugh, that is needlessly confusing.
Thank you for sharing this tid-bit!
I suspect the bit about short-running programs has something to do with the water temperature again since hot water should dissolve the detergent tablets faster. I'm German too but have yet to ever buy or install a dishwasher so I don't know if ours are usually hooked up to hot water too.
And this would also be valid for Siemens dishwashers as they are basically the same accept the logo.
@@TheStef1309 You can do it both ways though I'd recommend cold water. It's just easier and more consistent

Good job, youve changed our dishwashing habits!
I'm 51 years old and I have never used a dishwasher in my life. I don't even know how to operate one.
@Ross Bourne And then just go online and start spreading the word of a dishwasher detergent shortage 😜

This exists in the restaurant industry...
Would love to see it implemented in a residential washer. They also make clothes washing machines with the same "autofill" for soap
Miele washers have implemented this in their new 'AutoDos' system in the latest lines
tl;dr from both this and the followup:
- Don't worry about rinsing dishes before putting it into the dishwasher
- Heat sink water before turning on Dish Washer
- Use the 'Normal Setting' on your dishwasher to make sure the pre-wash happens
- Use powder Detergent (DON'T use dish soap, pods, or gels)
- Place in both the main wash, and pre-wash cups
- Don't use TOO much - the amount you need correlates with how hard your water is. If you have a powdery residue or film on dishes, you may be using too much. Try filling it halfway
- Don't sweat whether or not it has phosphates
- Get rinse-aid, it can not be included in detergent
- Consider getting a dishwasher cleaning product, like Glisten Dishwasher cleaner

as a person with a dishwasher that is never in use, it made me change the way i wash dishes in the sink. Not being sarcastic, just that im dumb sometimes
We’ve been putting two dishwasher tabs (one in the compartment, and one in the cutlery rack) this whole time, not realizing why it worked so much better this way. Thanks for saving us future money!
Me too I tried it once and saw the difference 😂😂 I understand now
@@SimonWoodburyForget I mean it’s about the same as filling both compartments on a dishwasher that has them for a pre rinse cycle like he talks about.
That is doubling your cost then
@@Inbal_FeuchtwangerWhen I bought a new dishwasher in 2020 (Kitchen Aid) the salesman recommended that I use powdered detergent and only 1TBSP because of the water qualities in Chicago.
I was really happy to learn that little fact
Eggs (and lots of other things) contain Lecithin. They work by being two-part molecules where one half of the molecule attracts water and the other half attracts oil, therefore will grab both at the same time.
yoLks
And it's the job of eggs in Mayonaise too.
Yeah the yolk is where the bulk of the emulsifier is, thats why its used in mayonnaise and salad cream 😁
This is GREAT to know! Thanks for that tip!
I literally do not want a dish cleaner that leaves behind any kind of scent, because I know I'm going to be eating that scent and I don't want it in my body
I thought it was just me noticing the scent clinging to the dishes.
I put a small amount of washing machine powder in the tub for the prewash. Cheap and works. Can't buy proper dishwasher powder anymore!
Hence why using only trisodiumphosphate is the only good washing substance.
This video actually changed my life. I never realized that I had been snookered by the pretty colors and fancy bullshit and actually believed packs were somehow better than normal detergent, then got mad that my dishwasher wasn't working properly. It never occurred to me to *read the instructions.* a 3 dollar box of kroger brand powder works better than anything I've ever used.
Apparently you could just divide the pack into a smaller portion for the pre wash and it should work similarly well.
That's good, and pretty embarrassing. You can hopefully imagine lots of your life is probably like this and you can better the aspects in many areas.

Great video - thanks also for not having any annoying background music or flashy graphics - makes it so much better to watch.

Yeah I thought he talked an appliance store into letting him use one of those display models but wondered why they would make a window in the back.
Good idea!
I'm so glad you actually exemplified putting dish soap in the washer. It made me happy to see suds on the floor. My life is complete.
Thank you.
Wow! 😅😅😅 glad you found the solutions.
Cascade Complete or Advanced works well for me. I get it at Costco so it saves me lots of money that way.

@Tom Says you most certainly don't save on water or time
but if you're alone or something it's a good idea to wash things as you go
@Tom Says 24:38 although, like seth said, if you’re by yourself, it’s really not a bad idea to hand wash as you go. i know because i do this myself, anytime i cook i hand wash the pots and pans. but this is really just to save room in my dishwasher; the dishwasher absolutely saves money on water.
Agree. I used to work as a dishwasher at a restaurant and that was the main thing.
You know, I’d never think I’d watch through a half hour video on dishwashers.
And this man just made it so captivating
This guy makes me care way too much about things that I probably shouldn't have to just because of how passionate he is
Seriously. Ive gone from not caring about dishwasher detergent types to an anti gelpack zealot in half an hour
@@tylerk6206 And now I can't wait to tell everybody I know how much those things suck
I truly don't understand detergent pods. Before detergent pods existed, I never for a moment thought "measuring detergent is difficult."
Some people are physically clumsy. Some people have trouble planning/keeping track of steps in simple tasks. Some people are very constrained on time.
The problem is, if the consumer decides how much detergent is enough, they could damn well save some money and only put half of the recomended dosage per cycle in there. And still get clean dishes and laundry! That could kill all the poor chemical corporations that only make a few billion $ of profit each year...
Pods are also good at keeping the enzymes and the bleach separate until they're used. They counteract each other
@@jrootabega What the hell, pods really use bleach? Why would anyone put bleach in the dishwasher? Maybe I'm too old-fashioned, but I've never even once encountered detergent with bleach (homemade and store-bought).
I've lived in Japan for 10 years now and I haven't seen a dishwasher that entire time. I only watched this video because I wanted to be reminded about what dishwashers were like
now I understand why japanese american parents hate dishwashers lmao
Same lmao
You will soon be replaced with a machine.
@@TuupertunutI already am a machine.
I would have thought 'reflux'.
I know no harm was intended with the "severe PTSD" remark, but I'd like to kindly request that you not use medical diagnoses to describe emotions or personality quirks in the future (unless you're discussing an actual PTSD diagnosis, in which case I apologize for assuming otherwise). For people who actually suffer with mental illness, this casual usage perpetuates misconceptions, tells people that their actual struggles are just "jokes" to others, and does more harm than good. Thanks for understanding!
29:21 "I want you to experience the full potential of your dishwasher". I have never anyone, and probably will never trust anyone, more than I trust Alex that he want me to have a maximum potential dishwasher experience.
I the maximum anyone, and probably the anyone too!
