    A modern LG top-load HE washer. This is its first run since being in storage at the oil spill house. Tub smells, retarded electronic controls, stuff floating in what little water it takes.
    Of course, the machine has a problem. What a huge surprise! As Sharkie626 likes to put it, LG stands for Lots Of Grief!
    They don't make any washing machines that are good anymore, except for Speed Queen. If you insist on buying one of the hunk-of-junk machines they sell today, do yourself a favor and buy one that's not a TV brand. LG and Samsung, just to start with, have absolutely no business making washing machines.
    You'll be sorely disappointed with anything you buy, but don't line their pockets with your money you're going to want back--they won't give it!

    These new washers need to be regulated for quality. My family specifically bought a "commercial grade" H.E. washer (HE was all you could buy within an hour drive) & our clothes come out smelling like soap, dirt, & failure.

      @jaykay18  3 года назад +7

      "Soap, dirt & failure". What a great line! You got that right! Don't even bother with HE, it's Highly Expensive and actually Hardly Efficient. Someone suggested adding buckets of water at the beginning of the cycle. HE suggests that you leave the lid open after washing to dry it out to prevent mold and smell from developing. Like anything, if moisture builds up in a sealed environment it will stink. I keep the lid open overnight. This is what I do and there's never a smell. Also the fragrance packs also helps, which is what I use. But I totally agree with you, these HE washers SUCK!!!!! The drain hoses suck - they are made of cheap plastic, the cycles are too freakin' long - almost an hr, (4 loads take 4 hrs), there is too little water to really get the clothes clean, it wrinkles and damages the clothes, lint and stains are every where, and the agitator at the bottom of the drum sucks. While the cycle was going I watched clothes on the top take an extremely long time to come in contact with the water at the bottom and by that time the washing cycle was half-way through. I miss my agitator. Also what is the use of having a huge drum when these washers don't take advantage of it? The water only fills halfway on the "deep fill" option. So far my dryer works flawlessly, which is the only good thing about buying this set.

    At first, I didn't like the HE washers, period! After a few years, the tub bearings give out and the drain sump fills up with lint, coins, etc. Once the sump becomes a collection zone of these undesirable objects, it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and mold. No doubt your clothes then smells like a sewer basin. After I repaired the bearings and cleaned the drain sump, I concluded that the sump needs cleaning 2 a year, at least. Better yet, the engineers need to go back to the drawing board and improve the bearings and develop a way to extract the washing by product(coins, lint, etc). I don't mind doing the maintenance, but for an average person this may be a pain in the ass.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  8 лет назад

      +jorge hernandez Generally, yes, a well-oiled machine runs better than one that hasn't been oiled. But to have such high maintenance is ridiculous. There are many with older washing machines that will tell you stories of 15, 20, 25, or more years than never needed anything. Plus they knew how to wash.
      Perhaps I have a problem adapting to the future, but I can't possibly see an HE machine doing a better job than my old ones. Kind of like mother's or even grandmother's cooking. NOBODY does it like them, and chances are they are very old recipes as well. There is just no comparison.

      +jaykay18 I Agree 100%! My mom's old Maytag lasted well over 20 years. We have become a "throw away" society. Gone are the days when every city had a "we can fix anything" shop at a reasonable cost. Today, we don't seem to put any value on anything anymore: make them cheap and squeeze as much profit from the consumer. I restore American made tube radios from the 1930's-1950's as a hobby and they were built with quality and pride. My sister purchased a Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner a few years back which lasted about 5 years; my mom's Kirby vacuum cleaner, on the other hand, is 51 years old and still runs well. I may be old-fashioned, but I put value on old American made products and bring them back to life.

      jorge hernandez Excellent! Yes, America unfortunately just isn't what it once was. In my opinion it's due to Corporate American Greed. Now they're trying to pay the burger-flippers $15/hr.

    Surprisingly it didn’t go out of balance and then do like 10 rinses just to try to balance itself. That is wasting water, not saving. And new washers don’t have a suspension. Instead they have 4 rods. High efficiency means high inefficiency. The only high efficiency washer that didn’t have the balance sensors were the GE HydroWaves but those were still not good and they were discontinued. The GE HydroWaves just kept shaking. The GE HydroWaves also didn’t have a lid lock. Also the reason why the lids lock is due to no suspension or break. On old washers, The spin cycle is designed to spin the rest of the water out, not fill with water and agitate even when unbalanced.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  Год назад

      HE stands for Hardly Efficient. The filling and draining to balance the load is a huge time, energy, and water waster. Imagine if you had a washer that went off balance and you had to balance it. Except that you were blind and had no sense of touch. It's completely random guesswork as to whether you got it right or not. It's a process that should be completely manual, not resource wasting. The machine should stop down, sound an alert tone that it needs assistance, and wait.
      Lid locks are on every machine today because all companies are afraid of lawsuits. America is sue-happy, usually due to their own faults. Parents not watching their children, no lid lock, kid gets into the machine, lawsuit. Why? The parent should take responsibility for not watching, not blame the company. But nobody takes any responsibility for their actions nowadays.

    • @coolrobuxgaming
      @coolrobuxgaming Год назад

      @@jaykay18 Also another thing with new washers is most of them lock throughout the whole cycle except GE and Whirlpool. The older Whirlpool high efficiency washers did lock full cycle tho. The older GE ones (like the HydroWave) did not tho. Also now washers cost 400 dollars at most. Appliance prices just keep going up. Even 2000s washers were way better. A lot of direct drives were made in the 2000s and those were awesome. The older GEs were just decent, not amazing. Although sometimes the older GE washers lasted like 20 years. Still way better than a new washer. New washers don’t even usually last 12 years. Old washers clean way better, have a better design, and they work better. No electronics failing. Also you had one of the higher end GEs from the late 90s or early 2000s. It appeared to be electronically controlled and had indicator lights.
      The more basic GEs from that time when yours was made just used mechanical controls. Even some HydroWave washers used mechanical controls. GE was the last residential washer manufacturers making washers with mechanical controls. There are ones as new as 2016. Speed Queen doesn’t count as the machines they make are designed for commercial use, not residential. Another stupid thing about high efficiency washers is that if the load is a super or extra large load and is set to the normal cycle, It will not agitate during rinse cycle. Probably some stupid water saving thing. High efficiency washers are expensive and unreliable garbage. I hope your direct drives will keep going as those are awesome machines.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  8 лет назад +1

      +Jason Hernandez Yes, very true. A machine has to have enough water in it, because water is not only the universal solvent, but it carries the dirt away! If I were an appliance repairman, I would get a jar, scoop up some dirt, and fill it with water, to make some really dirty water. Then I would show the people that not only is this ALL the water it's going to use, but also the water is this dirty, then they use the same amount of water to flush it out. It just doesn't work that way! Way back when, when we used to beat clothes on rocks at the river, there was ample water, and it all flowed downstream. The reasons I don't like HE Washing machines (long):
    1. The manufacturers are complete hypocrites. The washer manufacturers such as Whirlpool, LG (Life's Garbage), and "Swansung" (Samsung) pitch their products as being more environmentally friendly by using less water & energy, and then turn around and use a lot of plastic on their washers. Plastic takes hundreds of years to degrade in our landfills, and there's a huge problem with plastic waste floating around in our oceans. That sounds so much more environmentally friendly compared to steel, which breaks down into nutrients for the soil over time, and isn't limited in usefulness when recycled in the same way plastic is.
    2. The machine has complete control over how it does YOUR laundry. At least on the machine shown here, you can't tell the machine to fill up to the amount of water you want it to; it does automatic load sensing. This may sound convenient, but what happens when the load sensors break? You will have an otherwise fully functional washing machine that you can't use just because it throws an error code about non-functional load sensors. If the automatic weight sensing fill was just an OPTION you could CHOOSE TO SELECT along with the small, medium, and large wash load settings, then it might be a tolerable/acceptable feature. But no, you are at the mercy of the automatic load sensing that may or may not use the amount of water YOU want to use on YOUR clothes.
    3. This machine (and some others) have a wash plate on the bottom of the tub driven by a motor. I actually watched a washing machine buyer's guide by This Old House (don't watch it if you hate modern washers), and one of the reasons the guy gave for buying an HE washer is for the more "energy efficient" motors. However, from the sounds this machine made while it was "cleaning" the tub, I believe the motor is being turned on, then off, then on and off again with the polarity reversed. Electric motors are at peak efficiency (which everything on a washer has to be at these days) when running continuously. Starting a motor, as well as changing speeds, takes more energy energy, and can even waste energy on lower quality motors. It just seems counter-intuitive since they could just add a TRANSMISSION, with a TUB BRAKE, and the motor could just run continuously while the transmission did the work of changing the direction in which the wash plate moved.
    4. The full capacity of the wash tub can't always be used. Lorain Furniture on RUclips did some testing on an LG WT1901, and one of the things he mentioned was that it could not wash a full load of 12 bath towels very well. Where it "excelled" was when he filled it up halfway with 6 bath towels. One of the oldest tricks in the book to save time, energy and water when washing clothes is to wash full loads. Not only is washing 2 loads of 6 bath towels time more time consuming, the machine uses more energy to do two loads as apposed to one. Once again, the machine is counter-intuitive.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  5 лет назад

      1. This is a bit far-fetched. Steel is going to take a VERY long time to break down via iron oxide to enrich the soil. Sure, plastic won't help the soil at all, but even so.
      2. I agree, they took away the ability for you to do laundry the way you want to do laundry. Now it's the norm; the machine has to select how much water for you. I guarantee that every single time, it gets it wrong!
      3. I fully agree with what you said. The reason they cut out all the good stuff was a cost-cutting measure. Charging more, giving you less. That's the name of the game in Corporate America.
      4. Washing is regressing to how it was before the "automatic washer" became prevalent in America. Somewhere around the late late 1940s to 1950s, "automatic" washers came on the scene, and that was the next thing to have in order to "keep up with the Joneses". Not only was it keeping up with them, it was also a good thing, because it *really did* save a lot of time, toil, and trouble. Those fortunate families who could also afford a dryer seriously had it made. Washing was no longer a chore, it was a simple task that only took a few minutes, instead of hours upon hours. But machines have now regressed, taking 2 hours per load. Yes, it's counter-intuitive, but like they say, everything old becomes new again!

      @@jaykay18 Steel is also much more recyclable than plastic. Recycled plastic is limited in usability, but with steel, you can just melt down the scrap metal and pour it into a new mold to make a new product.
      Other than that, washers like this with flickering, singing electronic control panels seem to be built under the assumption that nothing will ever fail on the appliance, and nothing will ever need to be replaced. That is simply not the case. In fact, I give a Life's Garbage or Swansung washer a life of five years at the MOST. If you buy a washer that isn't made by a company that also sells TVs, I'll give it 10 years max.
      Unfortunately, MOST millennials don't seem to take build quality into consideration when buying a new washer, but rather what lullabies the washer can sing to them, how many different cycles (that seem to do the same thing) there are that they can get for the lowest amount of money, and they probably factor in brand loyalty as well.
      Sadly, I think the #1 most important thing to washer manufacturers these days is getting Energy Star certified. Not about making the best performing or most reliable washer, but about getting Energy Star certified, because that would TOTALLY be the deciding factor on what washer I purchase. What really sends me over edge however, is that they try to convince you that you should "upgrade" from your old washer you've had for over 20 years to a more "efficient" washer that would last 5 years if you were lucky, and that this is what you're SUPPOSED to be doing.
      One more note: Why didn't the washer fill the tub all the way with water when asked to do a tub clean? If there is one clip I would use to describe an HE washer in a nutshell, that would be it.
      Now, I have a question for you: Do you think there is any new washer on the market that is worth buying?
      Also, thank you for taking time to reply to my long winded comments.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  5 лет назад

      Wow, you sound exactly like me!!! I fully agree with everything you said! I absolutely hate the "upgrade to a new washer/dryer" BS, and people STILL fall for it, time and again, even the holdouts. They say the same thing about refrigerators, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers. The end result is always the same--the new machine will provide nothing but lackluster performance if it even works at all, usually has to run at least twice as long as the old one, and then breaks in 5 years or less, offsetting any "savings" that may have been realized.
      Washer on the market today worth buying? In a word, no. You need a washer, buy used!

    This is similar to the machine I did a video on at my aunt's house. I ran the self clean cycle after I took the cameras out of the machine. The reason it spins fast with water is because it doesn't use enough water to fill the entire basket with water, so it has to spin the water to reach the rest of the basket.
    The machine fills with hot water on the self-clean cycle, but theres actually a heating element, yes a heating element, like they use in ovens, under the basket to heat up the water even more. That is why there are no chemicals required for this machine.
    This is probably the only HE machine I would consider buying, however, but if I were to buy a washer I would look for an old Whirlpool direct drive or a GE Filter Flo.

    The new SQ TL will be of an Agi-Tub design(the drum and agitator move as 1). the stroke on the HD cycle is 900 degrees so the machine will be relying much more on lateral motion than turnover or blooming" This is done by reversing the FULL 1HP MOTOR. The transmission is gone and the motor has been doubled in horsepower. It now has a proper neutral drain and unlike all other TL machines the lid only locks during spin.(Which just makes sense) ALL models will be controlled by commercial grade, solid state electronics regardless of knobs or touchpad. This is good as properly designed solid state controls eliminate the aspect of mechanical failure associated with a traditional timer. Of course this would not hold true of the shitty electronics used in many home appliances as they are made to fail.(WHICH SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN). To sum it up I see a much more robust machine that is much better positioned to be on par with the SQ FL. It will however have to prove it's washibility as I am not convinced on the Agi-Tub design. I will post more when I know more. What I do know is if you want an old school SQ TL buy it before the end of the year or forever hold your laundry.
    Nick

    • @jaykay18

      I'm not sold on this new design, and probably never will be. It's going against so many years of old design that just plain works. It may take some time for the Agi-Tub to work properly, most times the first model year design is flawed, and they work out the kinks in later years.

    • @dualactionsurgilator
      @dualactionsurgilator 6 лет назад

      I'm not sold on it yet either. I will reserve judgement until they have been on the market awhile. However I have faith in Alliance that they won't put a piece of shit on the market. I still wouldn't trade my SQ FL for ANYTHING. It does it's job quickly, efficiently and thoroughly and is built like a tank.

      The agi-tub I'm not sold on either. When Whirlpool came out with those new belt drives, we could all easily see how turn over was pathetic with the tub that moved back and forth opposite of agitator direction. I have reason to doubt that was by design, I think it was because they had no choice due to the removal of a tub brake. But hey, in the possible event that SQ screws up big time, at least this new house got them when it did!

    DONT BUY HE here is why.
    1.They take longer to wash, in some cases over 2 hrs.
    2. In most HE washers you will never EVER be able to select the amount of water to use,this will leave a bad odor.
    3. They can not remove oil stains as well.
    4. By selecting fast wash, the stupid washer will just drain the water without Spin Dry..this leaves the Softener, then the washer adds the bleach, yea you will have Softener and bleach together.
    5. Load Sensing is just a waste of even more time that is not effective of fluffy stuff . Here is how it works. The washer weights the clothes, spins it then micro manages every drop of water is adds. all to make sure that the clothes inside sucks it in. Ones the washer "THINKS" all the clothes is wet is starts to wash.. This is by far the most stupid shit ever.. It takes for ever and in some cases the clothes never gets wet.. even on a front load washer the water never gets to the center of the clothes..
    5. On "My Wash Settings" you will not be able to maximize the temperature or amount of water.
    6. The soap companies figured these washer needs less detergent so they made "Low suds detergent" when in reality all you have to use is less detergent.. But hey that would have mean less sales for them.
    If saving water is more important then time and clean clothes for you.. the HE washers are are for you.. And dont thing that a larger capacity washer will help..
    Take my word for it, SHAKE OFF THE HYPE FOR HE WASHERS AND GO WITH A SPEED QUEEN.

    So why is that house called "The Oil Spill House"?

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  3 года назад

      It used to use heating oil for heat. One day, the tank was being refilled because it had run low, and it ruptured. The tank was located in the basement. Half of the basement was finished, the other half was not. All destroyed. It required jackhammering up the concrete floor, removing that, and then excavating the soil that was contaminated. New soil was sent back in, and a new slab was poured.
      I surmise the reason the tank ruptured was because of a plugged vent. These tanks have a vent with a whistle, the air escaping as they are being filled makes a whistling noise. The person who fills the tank is supposed to listen for the whistling to stop, and stop pumping at that point. However, it was the middle of a nasty winter, and I believe the holes in the whistle were plugged with ice, so the pressure built in the tank until it failed. I don't have proof of that, just an educated guess. If the tank filler actually did his job properly, this likely all could have been prevented. But like most, they're not there to work, just to collect a paycheck.

      +John Bruches Offering solutions is great. But when the solutions actually pose an imposition, such as having to ALWAYS use the bulky cycle, and lessen the load size, it's actually a workaround to a problem that won't be fixed. Reducing the load size especially is a kludged workaround; less in each load creates more loads. Couple that with the fact that it can take 2 hours to do a cycle, and that adds up quick. I couldn't imagine doing laundry for 6 hours (and I understand the machine is doing the work). I can get 6 loads of laundry done in my 2 machines in a little less than 2 hours, with no shortcuts being taken, or workarounds that need to be performed. It's really a matter of good vs. bad.

    This is an example of a lemon washer. Why even call this a washer when it doesn’t clean your damn clothes. I’m certain that these crappy things are gonna breakdown and give more problems to people and cost so much money to get it fixed. The worst part is eventually the whole thing will quit all together maybe less then a year and then your money wasted. I also noticed these modern machines use these crappy computer boards and sometimes they take a crap and say Error F01 and also not to mention they made these annoying noises when you press the power button and can be very irritating. Also the worst part is that they become very expensive in stores and basically people are wasting there money on what I call a lemon.

    What a piece of crap. Well unfortunately we have a LG model that is more or less the same than this one is but maybe a bit older. My parents got ours back in 2014 so it’s 10 years old now. Supringly ours is still going which is odd and has outlasted an off brand one that we had before the LG that died because of a failed circuit board (which was also electronic). The thing I will absolutely complain about with these things and epessually these models is this: No turn over, not enough water, too much time, and goes out of balance every other load. It’s just horrible. Our washer before we got the LG did the same thing but was worse because the cloths came out smelling like machine oil. At least the LG does not do that and they do at least come out smelling like they have been cleaned. Definitely hard to find a new one these days that actually works like an old Whirlpool direct drive. These newer washers that Whirlpool makes are absolute garbage due to the fact there is like no wash action and horrible suspention. At least LG has some wash action yet and with them in the past 2 years adding their agitator for the first time (which is a step in the right direction at least) and still being a partial direct drive, they are still not perfect. Speed queen also since 2019 has also gone down due to the loss of their direct drive system but at least they still have the good suspension yet along with some wash action. I would say if you had to get a modern machine, Speed queen would be the first choice followed by either GE (which still has the traditional agitator) or a LG. Whirlpool today in my opinion is crap now and they definitely rank on the bottom of the list. Everyone do yourself a favor and go find yourself an old Speed Queen or an old Whirlpool direct drive.

      There's definitely a different washing style with HE washing machines I noticed, I noticed oxyiclean like based HE detergents do better in HE machines, I also notice with the impeller models, the clothes need to be put neatly around the impeller not on top, and it can't be over loaded, or over use detegent. A lot of people use regular sudsy detergent in HE machines and their clothes never come out clean, and the machine takes even longer. For delicate lightly soiled items I think an HE impeller is better on not wearing clothes out opposed to a direct drive agitator machine. I had deeply soiled clothes and they came out okay in the HE machine, it was clean but it didn't feel super clean, still agitator power drive outperforms, and id rather a power drive, even if ny clothes wear out a little faster, I know I won't have to question whether they're clean or not.

      @@jaykay18 yeah true but sad truth is even the best machines like these old school beauties will have their demise eventually. But many people seem to get rid of them when there is very little or nothing wrong with them.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  5 лет назад

      I think that by the time these machines meet their demise, it will quite possibly no longer be the owner's problem. My 2 direct drive machines only do half as much laundry as everyone else's one machine. The more you use something, the sooner it will wear out. These are being used half as much. My dad has had a Lady Kenmore from the 1980s which he got around 1995 or so, and that machine has been running since without any repair needed. His other machine, a Whirlpool belt drive from the 1970s, has needed a timer and a brake disc. That's it.
      The tons of people throwing these machines out in droves is mostly over. Most people were throwing them out because "HE" and "save 40 billion dollars on your water bill a year" were the terms being thrown around. Everyone's always trying to get something for nothing. They figured even if they'd spend and spend and spend on a new machine, it would last and last and last, and save and save and save. It's done none and none and none! A lot of people are starting to realize this and they're snapping up machines on the used market, saying "this HE stuff isn't all it's cracked up to be, I want an old-school washer. Fortunately, those are the smart ones. There aren't too many smart ones out there, believe you me!

      Considering the fact I'm probably at least 3 times your age, I'm the one to tell you that you should shut up, not the other way around.
      Of course, if you were to actually back your statement up with FACTS that newer machines were better, then you'd have a leg to stand on. And not made-up facts they want you to believe like it "saves water" and "saves electricity", that's completely false. I've done tests measuring the amount of water and the amount of electricity both machines use, and the older, non-HE machines come out using slightly more water and slightly less electricity. The excess water would be negated should the HE machine have an unbalanced load, and have to fill and drain several times to redistribute the load.
      Now, I backed mine up with facts. I suggest you get going.

      Well my 8yr old was the one that commented
      But he washers are great. Use less water and soap. Clean just as well as old washers . Never had an issue with our he washer in the last 10 years we've had them. But they do require you take care of them but if you're lazy then they are prob not for you. Oh and unless your 110 you're not 3 times my age.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  7 лет назад +1

      So we're the same age then.
      I'm not going to fight fire with fire. Any machine requires maintenance. But in the 30 years my dad has owned his non-HE machine, there was only 1 breakdown of a part that was worn out, which was replaced for about $25. No maintenance ever.
      I clean the tubs of my machines once every 2 or 3 months. But otherwise they're flawless and just plain work. No matter how much you want to fight back with "yours are better", that's fine. Mine are faster, 35 minutes for a FULL LOAD HEAVY WASH.
