  • Here is the description of another historically used medieval helmet, and one of my favourite, the Sallet. Widely used in Germany and other European countires like Italy, France and England the Sallet is definitely one of the most significant pieces of medieval armour ancient warriors used in combat.

      Metatron what is your favorite helmet sir, you said maximilon is your 2nd favorite what is your first? thankyou, i am buying a helmet and trying to choose between the maximillion or the pig snout bascinets,... this sallet is ridiculous talk about moving backwards, it gives no protection to the most vital and vulnerable area the neck...

      Metatron thank you i will look into this, the frog mouth, :) i want the ultimate protection but another commenter said vision through it was useless thus not so functional... i need something i can use for home defence... i have one more question, i was watching a movie with nicolas cage called season of the witch, and nicolas wears the most amazing helmet, but i have no idea what its called, do you know what it is, i would like to research it if i have a name... ;D haha

    This alongside with a few 13th century helmets with faceplates and the klappvisier bascinets is one of the most intimidating looking helmets of the medieval period in my opinion. I don't really know why, maybe because it gives it's wearer a sort of almost robotic or non human look especially if he's wearing a full suit of polished gothic fieldplate.

    • @Anndgrim
      @Anndgrim 8 лет назад

      +MyNameIsMud It's probably the most vulnerable helmet of that era by far though. The gap between the sallet and bevor is just begging for a point to slide up there.
      Seems like armets and close helms are, if perhaps less convenient, far more protective.

    • @TheThingInMySink
      @TheThingInMySink 8 лет назад

      Anndgrim Yeah not to mention that some sallets have quite large opening for the eyes. But i'd still rather wear a sallet than an armet, Especially if i was an infantryman as i'm pretty sure the armet is heavier, atleast with a wrapper plate, and if not heavier atleast more restricting when it comes to moving your head, then again they can take lance impacts with those wrapper plates so there's that fact which makes it a good horseman's helmet. i'd still say the sallet is comfortable and overall more convinient as you said.

    • @joost1120

    We all have our favorite helms I guess; I just bought a Sallet because it is one of mine, though I prefer the heavy helmet look so I got one with a Bevel. I also like the closed Helms worn in the mid-1500's and my top spot would have to go to the Stetchhelm. It's a full face heavy helmet which provides the Ultimate amount of protection but realistically it's only a jousting helm because it requires an angle under 90 degrees to see anything out of it.

    • @metatronyt
      @metatronyt  10 лет назад

      yes the Sallet has a very interesting/intimidating look to it doesn't it? :) But yes my favourite kind is the closed helmet, and I particularly like the frog mouth

    • @missinformation5451
      @missinformation5451 10 лет назад

      Metatron the frog mouth is especially intimidating imo; and if you ever hear someone speak out of it their voice is amplified like an echo out of that cave of a helmet lol. That's the whole point of Knight Armour though, apart from protection and mobility, it was made to intimidate the opponent. You don't know if it was ever used in battle do you? I don't see many pictures of knights using it in battle and I can see why, due to it's impracticality for anything other than straight Calvary charges.

    • @metatronyt
      @metatronyt  10 лет назад

      Moses Browning yes you make a very good point about intimidating the enemy I did talk about it in my "helmets had top decorations" video. But yes the frog mouth (which is my favourite) was only used for jousting, hence it's weight, size and lack of mobility, all these three characteristics were expendable in a tournament, where what really mattered was to resist the shock of the lance in full charge.

    • @missinformation5451
      @missinformation5451 10 лет назад

      Metatron Yes I agree. I would not feel safe in most regular helms of the time in a jousting tournament; even though it is only wood, you can still easily break your neck without the right protection. Frogmouth's were basically giant slabs of thick steel which were usually one piece. I think that it could deflect a metal rod and still protect the user reasonably well :)

    I have a question about the close helmet. Since it evolved from the sallet by 1495, does that mean that the earliest known date for when the close helmets existed is 1495?

    • @risenknight9146
      @risenknight9146 4 года назад

      @Kaiser Franz von Lappen der 2. Thanks, the thing is that I am not really trying to find out when it became popular since I can already make a pretty good judgement for when that happened. The main problem I have been having was trying to find when it was actually created since I could never find a proper date or really anything that gave me an idea to when it was created which is why I asked my question. Thanks again for answering, even though its not Metatron, it makes me happy to see someone answer my question since this has bothered me for quite a while.

      @@hishamg OMG, you have done it. Finally someone has actually found a source of a close helmet in the 15th century. Thank you so much. I looked at the helmet on the royal armouries and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that helmet and then one other helmet. That is because there is actually another close helmet that was made in the 15th century to. There is a close helmet called the Tilting helm that dates to 1490 and its inventory number is IV.502. Again, thank you so much for showing me this website and that helmet. We can now say that the Close Helmet is a medieval helmet and I now have closure with this topic that I have been trying to find for around 2 or 3 years now.

    • @EnhancedNightmare
      @EnhancedNightmare 9 лет назад +1

      Sebastian Caine Why lousy? The neck is well protected from cuts and stabs, the back of the head is covered very well. It is very adjustable you can open top part and also lower neck park too. Which makes it very comfortable. It also looks pretty cool imho.
      These are my reasons, some other helmets might be better at protection, I don't know never tested them in this way. Which types of helmet do you find to be better?

    • @Samanthax1221
      @Samanthax1221 9 лет назад

      EnhancedNightmare Are we talking about the same helmet lol the side of the neck and throat are exposed, someone could just effortless lob off your head,... it may look cool but compared to the maximilon helmet? which looks 1000x cooler and gives a complete protection :) that is my favorite for style and protection in one :)

    • @EnhancedNightmare
      @EnhancedNightmare 9 лет назад

      Sebastian Caine The maximilian helmet was pretty cool in its own way, however it wasn't as popular back then. I wonder why. It kind of looks claustrophobic, I don't know I'd want to spend whole day in one. The close fitting parts just ask to be jammed after one strike.
      The other nice helmet is the Lobster-tailed pot helmet and derivatives of them such as Polish Hussar helmets. Very light and giving good visibility and air. Protection hmm ... not so much hehe but it was for lighter units and the coolness factor is off the roof. Just look at this example (from museum in my city):

    So is this the kind of armor that would have worn during the Italian Wars?
    If so, why are so many shows that depict that era so inaccurate? One of my favorite historical shows is "Borgia" on netflix (not the american version - that was stupid) and they would lead you to believe that during the Renaissance, armor was mostly discontinued save only breastplates, and some helmets without facial protection.

      Julius Cheeser sure those shows are rubbish, they demonstrate how useless chainmail is by using butted steel mail, why didnt they just use alluminium butted mail lol i am ordering a rivetted steel chainmail vest and coif... maybe some chausses too lol...

    • @Anndgrim
      @Anndgrim 8 лет назад

      +Stephen Richards it's probably budget. Probably not that it's too expensive so much as they are cutting corners cause they don't really give a damn. Most shows are like that.
      Look at GoT, it's supposed to be set in a world where Gothic-like plate armour is available but some of the richest men in the world wear mail shirts, coats of plates, and even some weird leather armours into battle.

    I don't know if you still check these videos, Metatron, but I was wondering if you might have any tips for finding a legitimate website to order a decent sallet for myself, preferably a full-face version with mouth/chin protection, or a sallet and a separate "bevor," as you called it, that I can order to combine with the sallet itself. I am not looking for necessarily high-grade, combat-ready material, here, just something to collect and wear as a kind of prop, but still professionally made. If you could point me in the right direction, then it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    I wonder though: in the pictures you showed the neckguard was not made of one piece, but of multiple potruding sheets of metal. wouldn't this catch a blow instead of deflect it? your own version (which is made of one sheet) seems much more sensible to me.

    • @metatronyt
      @metatronyt  10 лет назад

      Metatron if i had to face home intruders, and i had every helmet in all history to choose from to put on, what would be the best in your opinion, thankyou... :) and how important is intimidation factor, do you think it would make any difference in such a situation, could a helmet send a fright into an opponent enough for them to think twice and back off or run lol...

    • @metatronyt
      @metatronyt  9 лет назад

      Sebastian Caine I think any closed helmet will do, but if you get pigfaced make sure it's good quality, if it's a cheap helmet you are going to buy than it's better to buy a cheap Maximilllian, because cheap pigfaced or hounskulls have huge vision problems.
      For the intimidation I think that any helmet will do because a thief who find a screaming person wearing a helmet in 2015 with a knife in the hand will run away thinking you are completely mental xD xD ahah
      I should try it on one of my friends a make a video about it xD

    • @Samanthax1221
      @Samanthax1221 9 лет назад +1

      Metatron Thanks for the input on the pig-faced and hounskulls vision issues on a cheap helmet, its invaluable to know this considering my budget is restricted at the moment, and i was seriously considering a cheap pig-faced helmet because i imagined a arrow being perfectly deflected and my budget is tight so mostly i go for cheap if i can get away with it... i am making an entire suit of armor... I'm eclectically dipping into different areas that use armor, for example riot police gear, hockey protection gear, martial arts, paintball gear, ancient helmets and armor etc, its early days, but i already have riot police leg thigh and arm armor, a bullet and stab resistant kevlar vest, i am going to wear a riveted steel chainmail vest over the Kevlar for good knife protection, because i saw someone put a combat knife through a vest similar to mine on a youtube video,... so the Kevlar will be my gambason to take shocks, and give me some bullet resistance, ... wearing my police riot armor my brother said i look like robocop, i guess i will be a walking tank when my armor is complete... i am 99percent set on a maximilion helmet now after your input just confirmed it to me :) so thanks very much! your right about intimidation, i was imagining myself walking around in a maximilion and people thinking i am insane because thats what i would be thinking if confronted by it lol... especially if its late and dark... haha

    • @metatronyt
      @metatronyt  10 лет назад +1

      When thinking about Sweeden (and Danimark) the first thing that comes to my mind is the Vikings. Considering that the Viking era (or Viking age) lasted from the late 8th century untill 1066 we can consider it part of (or close to) the high middle ages (c. 1001-1300) and what will come next in Sweeden, Danimark and other Norse lands in Scandinavia will probably be similar to that which the vikings were using.
      Also the Scandinavian blacksmiths were fantastic producers of high quality steel, probably the best around at that time. I hope this answers your question.
      ps: I have a video about the Vikings coming in the near future, so stay tuned if you want more details and a nice show of their equipment :)

      It is true, this armour came out at the very end of the medieval age, and one reason gunpowder weapons became more effective is that all previous weapons had become increasingly ineffective against the armour of the late 15th Century. But you're right, knights still wore armour into combat during the Renaissance, such as in the 16th Century wars against the Ottomans, as bullets could not penetrate it at long or medium range.
