    • @wolfgangkarner
      @wolfgangkarner  Год назад +1

      When I saw the runway from around 8500 ft I was sure we would not make it straight in for landing. But the drag from the two props on idle plus full landing configuration made it possible (up to 3000 ft/min descend rate!). An other factor of the DA62 is the water cooling of the Diesel engines - with an air cooled engine you would risc some shock-cooling damage aswell ...

  • @notafanboy250
    @notafanboy250 4 года назад +2

    I'm actually very surprised you can achieve that descent rate (3000 fpm) without gaining airspeed in any Diamond aircraft. They look so slippery. Beautiful scenery!

    • @wolfgangkarner
      @wolfgangkarner  4 года назад +6

      Diamonds really are very aerodynamic. Gear down and flaps in landing configuration obviously generate a lot of drag but I assume that the windmilling effect of the three blade props connected to the high compression Diesel engines made this very steep descend work.

      Servaas Mundl! Des mit der Geschwindigkeit ist ja in der Fliegerei seeehr relativ ;-) ... Das hängt ganz von der das Flugzeug umgebenden Luftdichte, der Flughöhe und vom Gegen- oder Rückenwind ab. Es gibt da noch weitere Einflussfaktoren. Also: die DA62 (ein Flieger aus Österreich by the way) darf maximal 205 Knoten (Indicated Airspeed) schnell fliegen - das sind 380 km/h in Meereshöhe. Diese 205 Knoten sind aber in der maximalen Flughöhe von 20.000 Fuß wegen der weniger dichten Luft sogar 532 km/h. Nur diese Geschwindigkeit können die Motoren wegen des Leistungsverlustes in größeren Höhen nicht liefern, es sei denn, man geht in den Sinkflug, dann darf man die Geschwindigkeit von 205 kts nicht überschreiten. Im normalen Reiseflug fliegt man in ca. 10.000 ft bei ca. 85% Leistung ungefähr mit 350 km/h plus minus Rücken- oder Gegenwind ...

      No Diego, it was a VFR flight! This approach over the ALBULA-pass is one of two official VFR entering points to SAMADEN AIRPORT when arriving from northern directions. Because of an unexpected change of the landing direction to RWY 21 during the arrival, we were a bit fast and high above the pass so we had to get rid of speed and altitude within the last two minutes ...

    • @wolfgangkarner

      @@ArthurW okay, it only looks like an enornous setting to the right because the trim knobs labeling is pretty crooked! You must check the red line within the white stripe above the knob to see the indication of the trim setting. You could better see it on one of my other videos during an IFR training. Is there any limitation on low power operations, noticed that for some time the power output was at 0%, so the props were driving the engine. On the DA62 forum there has been talk of gearbox issues with shavings being detected in the gearbox oil prompting a gearbox removal. Could 0% engine load with the prop driving the engine be cusing gear chatter and causing the gearbox issues?

    • @wolfgangkarner
      @wolfgangkarner  2 года назад

      The DA62 POH doesn't mention any limitation on low power operations. I am sure the governor, gearbox and engine components can easily handle the loads involved within the operation limis of the aircraft. All these issues are calculated and tested before certification ...

    full idle, 110 KIAS und 3`000 fpm produzieren wahrscheinlich negative torque aufs flywheel ! Einen weiten 360 zu fliegen wäre weniger spektakulär, jedoch Material schonender gewesen.

    • @wolfgangkarner
      @wolfgangkarner  4 года назад

      Interessante Überlegung - aber dann dürfte man ja auch bei Highspeed und durchschnittlicher Descend Rate nicht auf Full Idle gehen, da ist das negative Torque noch höher. Bin mir sicher, dass die belasteten Teile dafür ausgelegt sind ansonsten wäre davon im Handbuch etwas zu finden.

    I don't know Diamond aircraft, having never flown any: But are the flap placarded speeds actually limiting? Because you're doing 110 KIAS during the approach with full flap showing as selected, which has '89 KIAS' next to the indicator....in the aircraft I've flown, speed written like this next to the flaps have all been their limit speeds. So I'm speaking under correction, not knowing how Diamond displays this.

    • @wolfgangkarner
      @wolfgangkarner  4 года назад +4

      You are absolutely right - the placarded speeds are a bit confusing. You are allowed to fly with 119 KIAS with fully extended flaps. With T/O setting you can go 136 KIAS as indicated. The "89 KIAS" is meant to be the Final Approach Speed (above 1999 kg) with flaps in LDG configuration (89 KIAS/Vref FLAPS LDG) ... :-)

      COORECTION of my earlier answer to your question! Both placarded speeds next to the flaps lever (flaps TO and flaps LDG) are applied correctly! Flaps LGD says 119 KIAS and not 89 KIAS. The digit "11" might look like a "8" from the distance or on the video. If you could look closer you would see the " II8" KIAS, which is the real maximum extention speed for the flaps LDG position ... Sorry for my former wrong reply!

    • @wolfgangkarner

      You mean the right and left turn before touching down? It extends the approach distance and you can reduce more altitude without getting faster. If you would fly directly towards the runway you would have to descend steeply, you would become faster and this would extend your landing distance or it would make a landing impossible.

    • @johnames6430
      @johnames6430 4 года назад +1

      @@wolfgangkarner thanks that's what I was thinking it extends the distance, I don't get the part of how it doesn't increase speed? I just did this same exact landing with the same plane in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020! Same approach as you and used the same technique. I went full flaps but it was really tough to get the plane to lose altitude in the sim.

    • @wolfgangkarner
      @wolfgangkarner  4 года назад

      @@johnames6430 Great - you flew the approach with the sim!!! Well - I didn't go into the details with this great tool yet, so I can't tell how exactly the specifics of the DA62 were modelled. I am thinking of things like the braking effect of the windmilling props with the highly compressed Diesel engines, etc ... But you see in reality it worked - to the big surprise of everybody on board. When you fly (steep) turns you always loose speed - if you don't want to do so you descend faster ... in this case a very helpful effect ...
