In South Korea, citizens have flattened the curve of the novel coronavirus -- and it's because of lessons they learned from fighting the MERS outbreak in 2015. Through a combination of aggressive and widespread testing measures, along with a system know as “contact tracing,” they’ve been better positioned to spot the path of the virus and curb its spread. While they are still vigilant for a second wave of Covid-19 cases, people in South Korea are slowly returning to public life. Watch the video above to find out how their testing and contact tracing measures work, and how it can be a lesson for countries still in lockdown.

You can only test at that scale if you prepare hospitals with tests, most other countries were simply not prepared testing wise and simply could not afford to test everyone symptom or no symptom.

Octavia Smith that s why we are dying, in the US we need to have all of the symptoms before we get tested; by then half of our lungs are already infected. And they put us in a ventilation for 10 days, as result the hospitals are overwhelmed by patients. If they admit us at the hospital at the earlier stage of the virus, people will spend less time at the hospital and more people will save. 😒
@@victorhinojos3050 Tests don't need to be conducted only at hospitals as the video shows. Besides, only patients with severe symptoms need to be hospitalized; The remainder can be quarantined at other facilities while being monitored.

Now that I think about it. The reason why Korean's numbers was higher than other countries at that time, is probably because Korea is doing diagnostic tests way more and earlier than other countries.

Yes That's true , Don't Look just at the shape of Curves or number of cases , You must also take into account the numbers of tests done . In my country we are doing around 500 tests a Day . you can't find 1000 infected people in a single day because you can only do 500 , but thank god we had responsible government . they did all they could despite the bad economical situation in the country even before the corona

South Korea is the only one country among the entire world that all school will start via virtual schools with 5G speed for 5 million students in a daily basis. WOW!!!

IT MAY BE TOO SOON TO TELL ... but where is this "DISTANCE LEARNING" going to take us? Will it become the END of PUBLIC SCHOOLS as we know it? Will it be the END of LOCAL school boards? Will it be the END of TEACHERS UNIONS? Will this be an END to PARENTS INVOLVEMENT in their LOCAL school district? Will this become the push to PRIVATIZE THE PUBLIC EDUCATION SYSTEM?
TRUMP, in his STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS, he even PRAISED the PRIVATE SCHOOL SYSTEM ... as to suggest it's so much better over the PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM. Like the UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE ... "BIG BUSINESS" wants to PRIVATIZE the postal service (a GOVERNMENT SERVICE that's REQUIRED by our U.S. Constitution) and what's stopping them from going after the PUBLIC SCHOOLS! It's BIG MONEY in their pockets if they PRIVATIZE public education!!
Right now ... the major INTERNET PROVIDERS are already receiving BIG BUCKS to provide INTERNET SERVICES to EVERY HOME in the nation to bring "DISTANCE LEARNING" to fruition. Services like "Google Classroom" and others will benefit from the funding they will receive to bring this "new school system" online. DO YOU THINK THAT THESE SERVICES WILL WANT TO GIVE UP ALL OF THAT NEW MONEY THEY NOW HAVE COMING THEIR WAY ... we can't forget about PROFITS for those STOCKHOLDERS, you know. And, will parents still receive the INTERNET CONNECTION for FREE ... or will you PAY FOR IT later down the road???
IMAGINE ... LOCAL SCHOOLS and LOCAL SCHOOL BOARDS are now gone for good! And, who says all TEACHERS will get to keep their JOBS! Teachers can be REPLACED by VIRTUAL IMAGES on a computer screen that will now present the lesson ... or even replaced by teachers from other countries where labor costs less. If the student has a QUESTION ... all they have to do is open up a CHAT session and the help they need for their studies will now come from an educator from another country. BIG BUSINESS will want to MAXIMIZE PROFITS and will need to KEEP OVERHEAD LOW so they may choose automation and other ways to INCREASE PROFITS. NOW, it may become that neither PARENTS or SCHOOL BOARDS will have a say as to WHAT EDUCATION your child will be taught!
Mind you, there might be some "PLUS and MINUS" to this whole DISTANCE LEARNING thing ... but you can BET that it's going to be all about MONEY and CONTROL!! Are you willing to GIVE AWAY LOCAL CONTROL of your schools ... you are doing it now with local shopping as you avoid shopping main street and buy more and more ONLINE! We already see more and more retailers becoming CENTRALIZED on the INTERNET.
I hope PARENTS, TEACHERS, and SCHOOL BOARDS are KEEPING AN EYE on this whole DISTANCE LEARNING matter. The fate of your child's education is here at hand.
wow I didnt know that my country is the only one country among the entire world. Actually it is the first attempt in S.Korea, so there was also some problems on the first day. Here in Hong Kong, we did the same, for 2 reasons. First, we lived through the 2003 SARS outbreak. Secondly, we have an incompetent government that won't close the border with Mainland China or implement aggressive testing. So we took matters on our hands and take protective measures.

I'm Korean and here's the fact that most country misunderstand. The tracking system used by the Korean government ensures anonymity. Only basic information, such as the route of the infected, is sent to citizens by text, so the infected do not have to worry about their personal information and privacy being violated.

That's great but with the nifty computers we have and other sources of info, I'm pretty sure that anonymity can be pierced. I don't worry for the case where a pandemic eventually ends. But what if it never does? As much as I support it as a way of getting out from under a pandemic, I worry that which seemed reasonable in the short term becomes bad in the long term. It'll be a hard sell in the US. I wonder if we've been fooling ourselves thinking the Spanish Flu is a marker of how infrequent pandemics are. Perhaps as earth's climate changes, diseases will mutate faster. Maybe this won't be the last pandemic for the next 100 years, we'll get a different pandemic ten years from now; 2 years from now; overlapping pandemics. It's paralyzing to ponder. We'll just have to keep up with the problems as they come - be it fast or sneaky slow erosion of rights.

There was an estimate of 1,4% but that's just the best guess and depends on country to country because the worse the healthcare system the higher the death rate.

SK also sent delivery packages FOR FREE to those infected so they stopped hoarding and panic buying as well.
They sent basic goods like food or toiletries in order to stop people to go outside.

South Korea's testing is also free which prompts people to test themselves.
Not only test...no matter how long stay hospitalize in ICU, all cost paying by National health insurance.
free for people with referrals/came into contact with positive cases (its like 100,000W if you want to be tested for your own sake).. which is the same in the US. That's not what saved Korea. It was the tracing and basically following every step you take. Not many other countries can do that
its the same in sweden but they dont offer you tests, only after 3 weeks of feeling sick they offer you to come, stay 3 days then only afterwords test you, wait 1 day and then let decide if ur sick or not. *just another thing > we dont have quarantine, the goverment even wants to inccurage people to go out, they even made parks free just for that reason, same goes for busses and some trains too.
No, from what I heard the tests are not free. You still have to pay the test, but if you are COVID-19 positive you get your money back. I assume that prevents hypochondriac and frequent testing blocking it for other people with actual symptoms.
d1oftwins it’s free for the test for everyone even visiting Korea. Then they divide the patient 4 group by symptoms. If you’re really serious or need medical care. it will be covered by national medi care system which you need to pay some portion of the cost. It’s not much though.
I'm a Brit living in Korea. The government response here has been absolutely incredible. I'm a HUGE advocate for personal privacy, but I'll be the first to admit that all of the information we have been getting from the government through forced emergency messages to our phones is amazing and IMO it should be a necessity. If I go out, I know exactly WHERE and WHAT to avoid. There is obviously a stark difference between the countries that took this seriously to begin with and the countries that didn't. As mentioned in the video - I know that the UK is larger than S. Korea, but IMO all of the deaths in the UK are down to the government just not taking the thing seriously enough.

Geoff Bannister There are value reasons for the lack of trust in the government in the U.K. South Korea is nationalist and homogenous country, whilst the native people are being actively replaced in the U.K. - there is no unity here.
@@Miquelalalaa the people lost trust in the government during the first week of outbreak because it hadn't closed its doors on China as per medical experts advice. It quickly regain trust from the public within a week as it was consistently being transparent on the measured taken and the numbers of infected. Homogeneity and culture didn't have much to do with it

I never said that it was a direct factor, but it ensures that public action and public response is efficient and orderly, and it forces the government to act as the unity of the people means that if they fail, they lose the confidence of an entire people.
Bede As a skorean who used to study in uk, i agree with you on some points. What id like to clarify is the fact there are certain numbers of “foreigners” from all over the world in skorea as well and skorean government has been offering free tests even to illegal immigrants not just to tourists or residents from other ethnical backgrounds, which is for the south korean citizens safety. Also skorea is a Confucianist country. It means skoreans society tends to love hierarchy and Confucianism places emphasis on each ones’ role and responsibilities. Confucianism is based on collectivism. So skoreans success on flatting curve isnt merely because of its homogeneity. From my observation i felt there are many ethnicities in uk mainly because of uk’s imperialistic aspect. But as far as i remember, there are many civil activities for community which i have warm memories. As you said it cannot be the same as relatively homogeneous&confusionist society but i do believe uk can manage your own version. Everything has pros and cons, right? I felt the diversity of ethnicity made your country more interesting. I guess its kinda homework for uk after this pandemic to sort out how to make people unitise and how to NHS more efficient and prompt. Also uk citizens need to talk about privacy issue. If uk keep putting individuals’ privacy over unity, it would be difficult to control pandemic like this.
This kind of work requires massive discipline and proper understanding between the government and its people, which sadly is hard to come by. South Korea deserves a round of applause
My friend is nurse in Korea. She wanted to volunteer, so she asked volunteer organization if she can help patient. The answer was no. Can u imagine the reason?? Already more than 2400 volunteer waited to help people. These days, I am proud to be Korean for the first time in my life. We still have lots of problems to solve, but we gonna find answer and do things what we should do. Just like we always did.

As a Korean, I think the reason we are doing well in this pandemic situation is that we Koreans have a strong sense of community. So sometimes we prioritize the good of community over one's own good. Frankly speaking, I am healthy and don't wanna wear a mask. It's very stuffy. But the reason I am wearing it is not to make others disturbed by me. I think many Koreans would think that way.
I even heard of a man whose daughter was confirmed. He is running a grocery store in a market place. Actually even though someone is confirmed, we don't know who's who. We are only informed of that person's whereabouts. But the father posted a notice on his grocery store that said his daughter was confirmed, so just in case do not buy food there. It was not him who was confirmed but his daughter. So it was not enforced by the police to shut his store down . But he did. Of course that is not the whole story of Koreans. But still there are many Koreans who think and act that way.

This is Asians and their collective culture. In the Western world, they tend to be and value individualistic mindsets. Eg. all the recent protests in America about ending the lockdown and how it “infringes on their rights”. As a result, it will really put a strain on the healthcare workers and ironically, prolong the fight against Covid and an economic downturn.

But freedom of movement and the right to be safe is also a huge part of human right.
They don’t really understand enduring a bit of discomfort will actually solve this crisis much faster. They need to understand that protesting freedom won’t make their “Regular” freedom come back faster. But, something that I can’t relate, can’t more people at least have some concern for others and wear a mask? I know many don’t have access, but some just choose not to. Protecting themselves will also protect others, preventing the spread and possible deaths with a slight discomfort.

I think your Other Countries refer to U.S. specifically based on their unreasonable protest recently.
I was in Korea when most of this went down. I took it as the norm, and I was never panicked although people there were very cautious. Immediately after patient 31, everybody was wearing masks and hardly leaving their homes. I just kept getting these annoying alerts on my phone telling me where infected people had been (and I'd just avoid those places). Came back home in March and I was surprised that almost nobody was reacting to anything. The difference in public reaction was so stark - it was like seeing a sloth after living with cheetahs.

Same. When I left, everyone in the airport had gloves and masks on. When I arrived in America, everyone in the airport had nothing on like there wasn't confirmed cases and no outbreak was going on. 🙄 Let alone the fact that in South Korea that you could get tested fast and know within the next day. At that point, America didn't even have a widely available test.

Most Western countries are now all bout individualism, whereas as in Asia they prize the group more. That's why they prized more public health (which FYI benefits EVERYONE) over their "liberties".

It's a basic psychological process to want to protect your group and people. I recently watched the documentary 'American Factory', it was clear that the mindset of the Chinese workers was geared towards advancing the fortunes and reputation of the Chinese people - I imagine it is similar in Korea. Difference between Korea and Taiwan is whether soaring curve is flattened down or not. Taiwan wisely blocked border and there are no abrupt soaring curve, the result is success so far. Korea keep open their border and flattened soaring curve down. Both countries did their good job respectively. For many countries with soaring curve, Korea is a good model though.

Theres another reason why South Korea didn't have to implement aggressive lockdowns, and its because of community response. South Koreans are more than aware of the outbreak, and were willing to take protective measures such as washing hands, social distancing, and wearing mask. Contrast it with the western world, people weren't taking the outbreak seriously, weren't wearing mask or keeping social distance until it was too late, thats why their cases rised dramatically. I think total lockdown isn't necessary if people took it seriously.
I agree with you on all except the wearing masks part. A lot of people, medical professionals and the WHO said masks were basically useless and they should only be used by sick people to prevent from spreading to others. So I think a lot of people who were being responsible and careful otherwise decided against using masks for this reason.
Edited to clarify: I don't personally think masks are ineffective. Just pointing out that that's what WHO said. I don't think we should blame the public for following the WHO either! WHO should have told people to make their own masks at home or something.
The assomption that people dont wear masks or wash their hands enough is so wrong in many ways. The problem in a lot of Western countries is that they have barely enough or not even enough equipment for the hospitals. And privacy is not so important for South-Koreans as it is for most Western countries and people...

I say this just because there's a few people out there who think otherwise: Koreans wear masks not because they want to and it's their culture, it's to protect themselves from polluted air and infectious diseases. Protection, not culture.

culture includes "social behavior and norms found in human society". So while you want to say its not their culture, by wearing masks to protect themselves and others is a learned societal expectation, which literally falls under the definition of culture.
Having lived in Asia I often saw people wearing masks (there was no pandemic at the time). I remarked to an Asian friend "are they afraid they're going to catch something?" They answered "NO! they probably have a cold or a flu and don't want to spread it to others." That's pretty thoughtful and that kind of mentality simply doesn't exist in Western Society.
I think the western misconception regarding masks is that only sick people wear them. Masks can be worn in any type of situation; it's not just the sick who wear it

I am still amazed with the fact that Korea was able to flatten the curve without locking down the country during this pandemic. Looking at all other countries, you would understand how hard it is to control the situation without stopping people’s movement.
Korea’s story gives a lot of hope to many other countries and I am really proud of it!
That's because they implemented the measures as soon as they know there was the possibility of an outbreak, and not weeks, or even months, after the outbreak actually happened. If you have a small number of persons infected (and you are prepared, obviously), you can track all of their interactions, test them and contain them; this way the number of new infections will be low as well. If you wait too long, and the infection become widespread, then you may not even able to test all the people showing symptoms: in Italy, for example, during the late half of march, tests were reserved only to medical personnel and people that needed intensive healthcare. At this point, the only thing you can to to prevent further spreading is completely prevent any form of contact, since you don't know who is infected. Also the fact that in EU, UK and US people are STILL not taking the threat seriously and keep ignoring the measure imposed if they are not actually enforced by the police and the army.

Exactly. In Germany, they actually had a pretty good grip on it. They developed a test in January, ensured that all labs are able to conduct it and then successfully tracked down the early clusters caused by people who came in from China and later on Iran. Where they dropped the ball was that they didn't realise that Italy hat become a Corona hot-spot early enough to cancel all mass events. And they didn't stock up on enough PPE. But otherwise, they managed to convince people to practice social distancing early enough that they death toll is relatively low.
America won't ever be able to this. We value personal freedoms and privacy over everyone's well being.

I am sKorean and I had a chance to study abroad in London. As much as I loved living there, there are some things I wished to be better. And one of them is hospital system.
I know NHS amazing staffs and always care for public health. But the system that patients have to go through is rather tough. Once I was sick and had to visit the gp and it took me a whole half day. Then she handed me out a paper and with that I could go visit a bigger hospital which takes me a week to see a doctor there since I had to book a date. Unfortunately, I wanted to get well right away so I had to come back to Korea to have a faster treatment.
In SKorea there are big university hospitals that takes over every sector of the disease-from orthopedics to internal treatments. But there are also many small specialist hospitals that you can go to. For example, if you have a sore throat you can go to ENT hospitals straight away and have it checked. It only takes few minutes to see a doctor and get medicines or treatments. It is similar to clinics in UK but with more variety of departments.
So under this virus situation, since the departments are so divided into small hospitals that people who are infected by coronavirus and other patients are not sharing a same hospital. Therefore patients who do not have coronavirus still can get their treatments from small hospitals without fear.

Hi Im korean, Korea is GREAT place to migrate. you must learn how to fluently speak korean first as its not multicultural country. Education is very high there but all the technology is fastest.

because they believe the governments. If you still think IT tracing systems are an infringement of personal data that means your governments are pretty messed up.
Some people criticize about privacy issue in South Korea.
As a Korean, I'm ready to sacrifice my privacy to protect my family, friends, and people from covid-19. I believe our government use people's information only for public purposes, not for their own benefits. Also, government didn't even open all informations. They opens limited and only necessary privacy to the public. We only know infected people's movements, age, etc... We cannot particular who are they.
If government use our privacy for other purposes, we can impeach current government as we did before.
Of course, I have a right to have privacy but simultaneously, have responsibility to keep others life safe.
Exactly. I'm not Korean but friends with some and this seems to be the general consensus among the population. Freedom comes with responsibility, a responsibility to your country. But sadly, Korea's ability to persecute their government if they violate the law and abuse their power is not possible in other countries which are riddled with bureaucratic and political hullabaloos. It seems like every past Korean president since 1993 have been tried and gone to jail after their term at one point or another. You really can't do that in most countries. Hence the distrust of the population to their government. It's a sad situation all around.
That is why COVID case in your country is slower than any country in East Asia.

Haha, I agree, but the part that is difficult for other countries to follow is probably part of collecting the information and then stopping the government from abusing it to pursue power. The actions south korea has taken have been rapid and widespread, and hats off to them for the effort they are putting in! My relatives stay in Hongdae, Seoul and they said the government was completely transparent with the people of their actions which is actually really important, cuz if you hide it from the people, you won't help them! Kudos to the whole team behind this. And everyone in the world right now!
South Korea: We need to do something to fix this situation and do the most efficent thing in responce to this virus.

I mean, yeah but no. At first it was handled well, and contained, but one particular citizen, well I suppose you could say a cult, said whatever and had a meeting where tens of thousands of people met. and it's that 'women' who went to the hospital with a fever.

Wow, good job South Korea! Remember, having a high number of confirmed cases isn’t necessarily bad, it just means that the country is very good at detecting cases and are not hiding any info from the public 🙄
@Edmund Awhat do you mean japan did better job? They got small case numbers because they rarely performed the tests on their citizens. Thanks to that, their numbers skyrocketed recently and more will come just like USA.

Though there was a debate whether we should lock down Daegu city with a sudden spike of corona cases, but eventually we didn't.
Yes, no lockdown in South Korea. People just go grocery shopping or go for a walk EXCEPT people in quarantine.
