    Across the US, black people are dying from Covid-19 at disproportionately high rates. While there are many different factors at play behind the stark racial disparities - there’s one possible reason that’s been lurking in the air for decades: pollution.
    The long history of segregation and housing discrimination has long put black people at greater risk of living near chemical plants, factories and highways, exposing them to higher levels of air pollutants. These pollutants have had a chronically negative impact on health, leading to conditions like hypertension and asthma. Now, those same diseases are associated with severe cases of Covid-19, and showing that where you live can determine whether you survive from Covid-19.

    According to the CDC ", less than 6% of all covid related deaths had ONLY covid. The other 94% had an average of 4.0 additional conditions or CAUSES per death." Now, based on that CDC statement and the known statistics of cases vs deaths, a little high school math shows that those with ONLY covid have a 99.89% survival rate, and those with an average of 4.0 other serious health conditions STILL have a 98.31% survival rate.

      Christa L this can also include livestock and food if they are in surrounding areas. This also affects the ecosystems in the area, and any potential water sources. Underground sources as well. It’s just all around horrible. These plants also release tons of chemicals into the air, which in turn create holes in the ozone. This can cause skin cancer, global warming/climate change, and many other problems. This is so problematic for poorer communities because they are often hit the hardest, or can’t easily fix a problem with the resources at hand.

      Honestly, I give up on counting on much of the politicians to make much change about pollution in a lot of places around the world. I say it’s best to focus what we can do ourselves besides just voting for what we think best and encouraging others by sharing our insights. I managed to easily find articles like “How to Help the Environment,” “Things You Can Recycle,” “How to Save Water,” “How to Start Your Own Garden,” and so on easily online. I doubt it’d make as much of a difference if someone in a greater amount of power around this does something, but I think it’ll do much more than expecting a miracle can happen that all the effort is placed into convincing politicians to change.

      T. Madeleine Thomas I am not denying that there is systemic racism BUT THIS VIDEO shows geographical issues not racism. There are many poor black people that don’t live in “harsh environments” just because you’re black and poor that doesn’t mean that you automatically have to live somewhere that is heavily polluted. No ones putting a gun to poor black peoples heads and saying “GO LIVE NEXT TO THIS FACTORY” that’s not happening.

      @cadenceew7933 4 года назад

      Lei P it’s about the equality of opportunity my dude. Sure some black people are rich and some white people are poor. You’re not wrong lol. The likely hood of you being rich based off of your race is the problematic part. The fact that you’re more likely to be rich as a white person then a black person. The fact that your more likely to have health problems, go to prison, and be poor as a black person. You can’t just single out some rich and poor people and then call it a day.

    • @cadenceew7933
      @cadenceew7933 4 года назад

      Nala Jax yeah this video shows geographic issues that align with historical racism. Why do you think the factories moved to those areas? Why do you think those areas where more favorable to move into? The history of red lining and housing discrimination might help you out here. The video is also supporting the idea that black people are getting more heavily affected by covid. This video isn’t about geography to begin with, so it shouldn’t be talking solely about geography. It’s Pretty simple. It’s talking about the health affects black people face, and why that supports the data that is being shown right now. So not only is this very much about black people and geography, but it also shows that a huge factor of geography and housing in the United States is still very much based on race. I can explain further if you want me to.

      wweweqws I’ll give you a few. Weed is still illegal federally. Some prison systems are still private. Prison systems in general. Gerrymandering. Federal minimum wage. Loan sharks are still legally aloud to operate. Here’s a more historical example; the creation of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendment which still led to the civil rights movement. Not only were blacks not free under the law at some point, but bridging this gap still didn’t solve a huge problem that they faced and still face today. This in turn led to the activism seen in the civil rights movement. Equal under the law doesn’t mean equal. The reduction of racism in the US doesn’t mean many blacks aren’t oppressed by laws that were enacted before they were born, or scars left in a time they didn’t know. Another law is the funding and legalization/modern militarization of police forces in the US. Another one is healthcare. Another is the heartbeat law. Another is college scholarships/sports that don’t pay college athletes. A pretty big way to exploit communities without paying them back. I mean I could go on, but I think you get the gist of things. That isn’t even going over the rampart affects of poverty and crime created by segregation and economic suppression that are still seen today.

    "Zipcodes are the biggest predictor of health"
    America please sort this out, you are the one of the richest countries in the world theres no reason you shouldn't be able to do this. As an Australian doctor I have seen first hand what health inequality can do. In Australia, however we have started winning the war on it.

      @@resetfakemail4685 Hence why there is a problem in Australia as well. The problem stems from decades of neglect from non-indegenious Australians. The Australian government has started flowing money to help the issue. This money is being used to help build hospitals and other facilities in rural Australia. Also it important to note that Australia is about 80% the size of the US with 7% of the population. Which makes it very sparsely populated. I doubt there are places in the US that are a 4 day drive from a hospital. This isnt an exuse but it does make it hard. We arent close to erradicating the issue but at the end of the day Australia has acknowledged a problem and have started doing something about it.

      If sorting it out means no political or financial gains while also having to address and correct structural inequity, this country's past performance indicates it won't happen.

    I remember when the virus first hit and the transmission rates of black people were really low. A group got together, not sure if they were radio, tv, or podcast hosts, who said black people can't get the virus. I wonder if that mindset made it so some people didn't follow protocol in less povershed places.

    Poor white, asian, hispanic and other folks suffer the same issues in these and many other areas. It isn't a racial issue anymore, it's a poverty issue. This man is on point, but is not representative enough. Poor people work the hardest jobs in the worst conditions for the least amount of pay with little to no benefits. And most have two of those jobs. They can't afford better housing areas, proper healthcare or quality food, and make too much for government assistance.
