The risky way to speed up a coronavirus vaccine

- A Covid-19 vaccine could take a long time. Some scientists are proposing a controversial plan that could get us one faster.

With thousands of people dying of Covid-19 every day, the sooner a vaccine can be deemed safe and effective, the better. But vaccine development is a lengthy process that isn’t easy to rush, and that’s in part because of the final step in testing any vaccine: the phase III trial. Phase III requires tens of thousands of volunteers, each of whom get either a placebo or an experimental vaccine. The problem is the next part: Vaccine developers have to wait until a statistically significant number of them, going about their lives normally, eventually get naturally infected. This can take years.
To speed that up, some epidemiologists and scientists are calling for something called a human challenge trial, in which a subject who has been given the vaccine is deliberately infected. This isn’t a new concept; human challenge trials have been used to develop vaccines or treatments for lots of diseases, like cholera, typhoid, malaria, influenza, and common cold viruses. But what sets Covid-19 apart from those diseases is that it currently has no effective treatment. Because it’s so new, we also aren’t fully aware of its long-term health effects. Unlike other human challenge trials, a Covid-19 challenge trial would entail a risk of serious illness - and even death.
It’s because of those risks that a Covid-19 challenge trial would be limited to the young and healthy, who would be at the lowest risk of harm. But there are questions beyond the ethics. Would artificially infecting someone in a lab setting provide useful information on how to prevent natural infection? Would a study performed on only young and healthy people produce a vaccine that works for everyone? And with some vaccines already far along in their phase III trials, would a human challenge trial do any good at this point?
Even though no Covid-19 human challenge trials are currently planned, more than 30,000 people from nearly 150 countries have already said they would volunteer for one if the opportunity presented itself. The question is, should we let them?

I actually wouldn’t mind doing this, I’m already going to be exposed to the virus in school so why not get infected willfully in a controlled environment?
waterlily my thoughts exactly
Because a vaccine is mostly for old people and we don't know the side effects of the vaccine or long term damage from the virus in young people even though they have mild symptoms usually. You shouldn't be forced to school. My kid is a senior in high school, which is heartbreaking not to be in school but the entire country is doing virtual classes online, same school, same teachers, but the kids are at home. The only thing they miss is bullying and cafeteria food.
By school do you mean you aren't an adult because then you can't legally consent to volunteer.
Yoshi consent to medical research, at least in my state, is not outlined under the law. It’s essentially a big ‘what if?’, which could be appeased by either making new legislation regarding minors to consent in medical research or simply having the parent or guardian consent on my behalf. The situation is not that I can’t, it just isn’t defined yet.

Who knows, maybe they offered money to volunteers, or reduced sentences for prisoners. We really have no idea why they think their vaccine will definitely work.
If we were living in the 60s, they would just do this testing on prisoners.

Why is this controversial? If you’re young, healthy, idealistic and want to help the world. Let them do it. They’re hero’s in my mind
Because based on data there are more old people who died from covid-19 than the young people. The young people still can be a volunteer, but the result can take different for old people.
Sorry my English
You can only use the vaccine in the population that you've tested the vaccine in. Which means a vaccine based on data from a human challenge trial could only be used on healthy young adults because those are the only people you'd sign up for a challenge trial. People trust finished product but doesnt want to be pioneer. So much for thinking themselves higher than anti-vaxxer
Deaths in younger healthy people seem incredibly rare though, actually most infected young people go through life not even realizing they are infected, I'm mostly worried about my parents for example, but even if they get it the chance of becoming severely ill or dying is still really low
These kids risking their life. Hope everything goes well for them

Hey, I know that's supposed to be taken as a joke but please don't say that, I too have sometimes wished(before this pandemic) but now I realize we would really regret this wish of ours don't okay,i hope you never get sick specially with something that serious~
I wouldn't. And btw, that disease caused weight loss is pretty much always temporary. I would recommend attempting to change your diet and activity. I've lost about 15 pounds since this pandemic began with about 30 more to go. And it's also good incentive because from what I read, not having too much extra weight helps people who contract covid.
