Why is South Korea facing a beauty backlash?

- South Korea has often been described as the plastic surgery capital of the world. An estimated one in three women between the ages of 19 and 29 has gone under the knife. But a radical feminist movement is calling for an end to Korea’s impossible beauty standards.
So can Korea break its beauty obsession?

If people feel like they have to undergo invasive surgeries just to be accepted then its a social problem.
according to official isap reports, MAJORITY OF korean plastic surgeries are NONINVASIVE such as mole removal, lasers, fillers, skin treatments, etc.
well according to isap reports, eyelid surgery to make the eyes bigger is the MOST COMMONLY PERFORMED PLASTIC SURGERY in EVERY WESTERN country including america. Double standards much? www.isaps.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/ISAPS_2017_International_Study_Cosmetic_Procedures_NEW.pdf
look up kendall jenner, ariana grande, taylor swift. they all had brow lifts and eyelid surgeries to make their eyes bigger. hypocrites.
Jo L yes, however- eye lid surgery (at least here in Orange County California) is primarily targeted at Asians by Asian clinics. An exception is aging eyes for Caucasians. No judging on my part . I’m just offering the facts. The European standard for eye beauty is shape ( almond) not size.

There is nothing wrong with not having an eyelid crease.
Monolids are a beautiful feature
@noobenstein hahahaha very funny ! There, satisfied ? Now cut the bs.
That really wasn't the point of the video.
It has nothing to do with how men perceive them. Men could care less about double or single eyelid. They are competing with each other.
And they swear up and down they're not trying to look white yet their entire beauty standard seems to say otherwise 💀

I remember a korean RUclipsr talking about how random women would go up to her and ask her why her skin is so dark and saying she may not be a local because of that. It's interesting to witness men feeling attacked by a woman rejecting beauty standards. Almost as if the men's own identity was wrapped up in a woman's perceived beauty and a woman's role. I think it's time that both men and woman re-think their identities and their worth as human beings and not just as an ideal.
I don’t think men are worried bout if woman want to wear make up or their beauty routines but instead are alarmed of how feminism movement pushed by western liberal groups are taking shape in their society. @@CandiceGoddard this is why western libfems called this movement "transphobic"
@@CandiceGoddard what I think that saying meant was that every woman, whatever they do, who they were and are, where they came from, is feminine, whatever positive form and value it is. Hopefully, any nation with their own very narrow standards realize the flawed but humane nuances of women.
We define ourselves and nobody else.
There are many different forms of beauty and it's sad so many are forgetting that...
@@CandiceGoddard transgender women are still women and they can do whatever the hell they want and still be women, that's the whole point. We are not attacking anyone, hell I wear makeup and skirts 'cause it makes me happy, which doesn't mean I go around telling everyone they should as well.

Brooke Kuipers No it’s not, it can be “female” but not feminine. Look up the etymology of the word feminine. If a man/male is characterized as having “effeminate” qualifies, it is because he has a “softness” or a “delicate” way about him that is ascribed to a “feminine” woman.

"who need bags if we have pockets!"
*smirking proudly to my pants.
"EXACTLY"
13:09 i understand that "people judge people by their looks" but look at the clear statistical evidence that much more women go under plastic surgery than men. is it because more men are more beautiful than women? no. one cannot deny that there isnt a social structure that pressurizes women that she has to look beautiful and perfect and should fit into the standards in order to live a good/better life. most men get jobs, have a relationship just fine without having to get double eyelids or a slim V shaped jawline surgeries. what's expected of men and women are clearly different. that is inequality. This is why we "escape the corset"
Men are bind by their sexuality and prefer hot young women, and women know this and use this. It's that simple. Looking prettier, even if it's fake, gives women a big advantage when it comes to competing for desirable men.
Women also want physically attractive men, but they prefer wealthy men because that means security for them and their offspring. It's not just 'a social construct', it's our nature mixed with consumerist mindset.
A mans plastic surgery is his bank account. Can we also “escape the income”?
Men and women both equally (or at least to the extent that it matters) have unrealistic standards for what they must do or be to be attractive. Having to be rich is not any less oppressive than having to be pretty. We should address both.
카보아도 it’s because as women, we fall in love with a mans heart. Not to say we don’t appreciate a nice body , and handsome face. But love for us is a bit deeper. Men fall
In love with beauty before they fall in love with the person. I think that’s ONE reason why men have it a lot easier. Here in the U.S an ugly man that looks like an ogre can snag a woman that looks like a model. And women here still compete with other women for those men!
James W Im literally married to a weenie that just started working again. I’m the money maker lol

As someone living in Korea, the way most medias frame Korea is wrong. They frame Korea as an extremely superficial country, while in fact, its not that superficial. No one will get bothered in Korea for having a bad fashion style, or by having naked face, by being overweight, and so forth. Furthermore, for the plastic surgery, the statistic well known among people, which states that 1 out of 3 Koreans go through plastic surgery, the stat is actually significantly manipulated, as it is hugely inflated since it also includes the surgeries of foreigners, such as Japanese, Chinese, Americans, etc. For instance, every year about four hundred fifty thousand foreigners visit Korea with the sole intention to undergo plastic surgery, and this isn't the total surgeries held by foreigners, but plastic surgeries held every year by foreigners. Ultimately, leading to greatly inflate the stat from its factual stats, which solely includes Koreans. Imagine that much amount of surgeries add up to the stats of Korea. Not saying that what the medias portray Korea is incorrect, what I am saying is that they greatly exaggerate and overemphasize issues, and foreigners who only meet Korea through unreliable medias will get "brainwashed" or have a greatly mistakeb misconception in Korea, even before actually visiting there. Go visit, if the issues seem true and unexaggerated, then leave.

@freshly squeezed That's a really good point. Ok bear with me: How about making gender mostly irrelevant for society?
I mean, gender only _really_ matters in a few cases anyway (like some sports, medical care, and of course reproduction).
So, gender could _in theory_ be irrelevant for clothes, hairstyle, manners, careers, etc. That way, any choice about those things would be appropriate and acceptable regardless of gender and the whole femenine/masculine distinction would be irrelevant.
I know it would be really hard, but just considering _"anything a woman does"_ as femenine and _"anything a man does"_ as masculine could be a start 🤷♂️

If everyone is made to be beautiful and the same then "ugly" will become the new pretty. At least for me! I like to see something different.
Also this infantalization of society needs to stop! Grown women and men trying to be like teenagers, we have to stop this for everyone's benefit
My mother says that idols and other people in their 20s do this because they consider them to be still young and so they can act in a more youthful manner compared to western people who become more mature faster. I kind of understand this but it's also still really weird for me lolol 😅😂😁
Also I would like to see something different. When I look up ulzzangs and some idols and actresses, they look very similar.
I mean, their facial features are different and I can distinguish quite a few idols and actors from each other but there are also lots who I can't tell the difference between
@@dreamsoftheilluminated5158 when these very idols reach an age of realisation, they will see their past and cringe 😂 ngl
Some idiot made standards and the rest is saying “there’s nothing we can do about it, this is human nature”.
NO IT’S NOT!! 😂
It is human nature. Naturally beautiful people have better genes in generel. Human procreation is driven by good genes to a huge degree. That's especially obvious in the choice of a sexual partner but also in everyday life. Beautiful people are generally treated better by society.
@@LeylaOzden-fc1bi We have scientific evidence that shows that it's natural. Beauty standards might be different from country to country but there is a common denominator.
@@LeylaOzden-fc1bi At it's core, nature. Variations come from personal preference or societal influence, though those variations are comparably slight.
"However, among animals that's natural because the standard is set by nature itself and does not change." Human beings are also animals. Even though a way more developed animal we still have many animalistic drives ingrained into our biology.
@@DevlVergil yes. The common denominator is healthy mates that have feminine features. She looked like a boy at first but when she stepped out of the shower she instantly became exciting.

Yes, but humans are a very diverse and adaptable species. We don’t need a beauty standard because we have many different kinds of beauty in both men and women. People have all kinds of preferences, probably for different biological needs (like genetic diversity, strength or better immune systems).
God that was powerful "what a woman is and what a woman does is feminine." She is so bright and Imo so so so beautiful.
DarthYuYevon she is, and she’s gonna make femmes feel pretty lucky ;)
Men who can't find anything to do but degrade the beauty of women hate themselves: a theory
Incredibly delusional.
i recently bought cargo pants from male section, and saw how amazing the material was compared to female ones...the pockets are so usefull too. why have i never thought of using my pockets to hold my keys. it felt to freeing to walk around with nothing weighing my shoulder (which btw i got diagnosed with left shoulder muscle imbalance by doctor years ago since i had sharp pain/nflamation in my joint and the limb never straightens like normal again- all due to hand bags on left shoulder).
Summer's last words are the best: this is what a woman looks like, what a woman does and it's feminine and it's beautiful. Respect to this young lady for thinking with her head, for loving herself and for not succumbing to this unrealistic, dangerous beauty standards and expectations.
i'd rather spend my money on food medicine house and bills..
alyssa marie jagonio agreed
SAME !
Food and Shelter lng, Sapat na. 😏
Anyone see the kdrama My ID is Gangnam Beauty? They made fun of her even after her plastic surgery! Their way of thinking needs to change. There’s a lot of bullying and people committing suicide over said bullying. It’s extremely sad. RIP to all of those that were taken from us too soon.🙏
Summer makes me smile so much - what an awesome human 🌟🧡
I'll never understand why they want to change their eyes. Their eyes are freaking beautiful.
I'm happy "Summer" is not following Korean beauty trends. She is incredibly beautiful already!
Neil Jones She looks even more beautiful now!
She looks like a MAN or a LESBIAN. Man-HATER for SURE!
@@darna1869 she might be a lesbian. There girl she's with kind of sus.
Yes, in my personal opinion she looks much better than all those fabricated and cloned looks.
@@darna1869 How about no ?
The concept for that school uniform ad is messed up.
ok girls look cute & freeze.
I think they should make more than one type of uniform. Make one for summer and another for winter (for both guys and girls). Uniforms can still look good on both genders while being weather appropriate as well. Maybe add a coat for winter and some fleece leggings for winter. No one has to sacrifice comfort for style. Idk. Just some thoughts.
Some east asian naturally have double eyelids and pale skin. And I'm the same, I love myself. Please don't tell me I'm fake.
A few years ago, Japan's NHK TV showed the photos of the Miss Korea contestants. All the ladies looked almost identical. It would be really hard for the judges to tell them apart.
Why do so many asians want double eyelid surgery? Moon eyelids are beautiful.
I know I find them so pretty!
I think so too
Monolids
I agree! It’s pretty and unique. And I have them!
I have half :D
When I was living in Korea, what broke my heart is that all the beautiful Korean ladies never felt worthy. As beautiful as they were, there's was no confidence behind it.
thats what happens when your country beauty standards control day to day life
every country has beauty standards but some aren’t really affected by it because it’s not so openly enforced
South Korean ones seem to affect everyone on a daily basis OPENLY so it forces everyone picks their appearance apart to find whats “wrong” and fix themselves because they aren’t as pretty as people like Cha Eunwoo or Irene from Red Velvet and koreans only respect that level of beauty it seems
@@idontknowanymore9966 well, luckily enough we Africans don't have beauty standards.
@@amongindomitila3028 Africa does have its own beauty standards. Don't act like skin bleaching isn't prevalent in places like Nigeria and South Africa
@@preciousoh705 skin bleaching is every where, but that ain't a beauty standard for us.. like it is in south Korea. People do have choice making but a majority of us are comfortable in our own skin. No need for surgery to get a pointed nose, double eye lids n stuff.
@@amongindomitila3028 Obviously lots of people don't bleach their skin but saying Africa doesn't have a beauty standard isn't true. We do, its just not our biggest problem
Meanwhile in "western" people like myself get nosejobs to get ride of that same nose bridge that the asians wish for! As well as literally burning in the sunn to get that "nice" darker tan skin coulour. How crazy is our society that makes us fell that we are neverrrr good enough as we were born :( this has to stop! Very brave girl in the video :) 💪
That's all effects of marketing
Exactly!! Crazy...
Shut up
I was recommended a video by AJ+ talking about this same topic, and Summer was wearing the same shirt for that interview too. Same outfit actually.
Sadly, the surgeon is right on saying the western do it "under the water".
That doesn't make it right tho u.u
Yea but everyone is talking about korea tho as if no other country has beauty standards. I am sorry but beauty standards matter. If people not that beautiful, people might be afraid to travel. Western used to hate asians and called them ugly before they rose with beauty and anime.
We all know that there are beauty standards everywhere especially for women but South Koreans are very rude and mean to people who prefer to be natural and do not want to fit into those beauty standards. South Koreans have become ugly people inwardly just to attain outward beauty which is very wrong.
@dil oreo Why is that racism?
@dil oreo ohh there are others who do it too i mean bleaching in a lot of communities... etc
Well not to that extent.
Imagine a world where everyone would look the same! How horrible that would be!
I know. Look at all the variations in nature. Humans are dumb. We cannot all look perfect.
Confused world that put into suspense 😂
those two feminist looked exactly the same, they looked like 10 year old asian boys.

i dont know why i am watching this i can't remember the last time ive worn make up (othere than for theater productions. ) I am a take me or leave me for what i am girl
Koreans are obsessed with beauty. I've watched a ton of Korean movies and it struck me why they are so fixated on perfection.
With the rise of Hallyu ( Korean Wave / Korean Fever ) I guess 10 years from now every girl will look the same and always striving for perfection that doesn't exists.
No they are obsessed with confirmity

@@bw8383 its not about confirmity, its indeed about perfection, for both male and woman
they need to look good for others or others will judge them bad, worst than people judge in west
Exactly. I too watch a lot of k dramas and find them really interesting with crazy plot twists and very good story lines.
Have noticed how much looks matter in SK, very soon they'll all be the same, white skin, slim bodies, long hair and uniform features, ugh
I read of an actor who's married to a beautiful actress even announced their baby girl's arrival with " she has double eyelids like her mom!"
how superficial is that?
So much pressure on these stars and young people , they want to be popular and have huge fan bases and ultimately a few hate comments from some malicious netizens, they even kill themselves. Sad
I love single eyelids on people, I find them attractive
they're called monolids, and i'll always find it crazy how they're generally fetishized/exocitized in western culture while people in eastern asian countries apparently view them as "tired" and "unfriendly"
I think it looks prettier than western eyelids...
monolids occur in people of western and non-asian ethnicities too, just at a much lower frequency than most asian ethnicities
@@litchtheshinigami8936 also there are a lot of asians with naturally creased eyelids, so it's best not to exclusively associate double lids with the west
I like hairy asses on women. I find them attractive.
I think the issue with beauty standards is almost all over the world. There are different beauty standards in different places of the world and that truly refrains many people from being beautiful in others' eyes. An "ugly" person from a certain country may look "astonishingly beautiful" in another country. That is why I think that no matter how people look really matters in terms of how good-looking they are. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I really hope that people can see themselves as who they are and love themselves for being who they are. If we take off the lenses of judging people according to the beauty standards "there", people can really start being who they are and not be insecure of how they look in others' eyes for the most part.
More power to the women who feel like "Summer" The so called "beauty industry" is steered by big business and the harm of some of the consequences are nothing short of criminal.
“What a woman is and what a woman does is feminine.”
Yes 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@Ben K Thanks for the laugh I needed it!
Ignore him he lives in a bubble far removed from nature. The idiot actually believes men could do all that manual labor and research on their own with no input from the other half of the population which is illogical.
I always used to wonder if I was just imagining it when I thought most kpop girl groups looked like duplicates of the next group.

Kpop is becoming a vile factory.
Especially because of the double eyelids, pale skin , V shaped face, and skinny type body.
