I am a Korean student, and there is something just as outrageous. Going to a good high school is considered as a huge respect; say you went to high school A, which is the best high school considered in our country. But then you graduate with the highest grades and then you decide enter college B, which is the second best college in the country. Guess what? You're considered a failure.
I saw an interview of a north korean refugee who said that he never felt suicidal until he came to south korea and tried to keep up with his peers in college
There is no comparison to be honest..north Korea you are already indoctrinated and brainwashed into living a shitty life unless you are part of that 1 percent to there...and forced to work god knows how many hours of manual labor or whatever the fuck they do there
That's with most asian éducation systems this isn't JUST Korea It's like this everywhere Only korens are more known because western people love going there and stuff I guess. But students are dying everywhere and we study what you guys study in college in high school and there's only 0.06% success rate
I'm Korean and in Seoul there is something called the 8 areas of Kangnam, which the most prestigious schools are located, and studying there literally gives depression to everyone. Their status is valued by how you are more superior to the others. To get the highest grade, you have to be in the 4 percent of all students. For example, 96 out of a total of 100 is an excellent score, yet if the 4 percent of all students managed to get a 100, and the next percentage which is 7% gets a 98, the next 11% gets a 97, you can get a grade 4, which is a grade that is actually impossible to go to a good college. Also, Koreans don't get a chance to see the exam(수능,which is the korean version of SAT/ACT) multiple times, so your life depends on that one exam. All the studying you did is meaningless if you screw it up that one time. It's sad I'm actually living in this judgemental country. They even look down on you if your major isn't related to science/engineering/math. It's hard for people like me who want to major in literature or the social arts.
It's a shame, I hope things get better for you. It angers me to see you guys go through this mess. The saddest part of it is the acceptance like you said. I'm an American myself, but I don't like how judgmental society as a whole is. I sympathize with you all because I went to elite American schools, although there is no comparison I have a small taste of what you go through. I'd never judge someone because they passed or failed one exam.
I hope you can break this and follow your dream! I really concerned about this! I want to learn the Korean language and live in Soujt Korea. But I see there is so much pressure studying or even working there. BUT I do not want a life like that. But my dream is to learn the language and at least visit the country. I do not even know what to do or what career to choose.
Damn!! That's exactly same as gaokao , I think that's because of the historic connect, ideologies and lot of other things in common, including the education system.
When I'm older, I'd rather have "C" kids who are confident and eager to explore a variety of subjects than those with accolades in a variety of areas and straight A's who are crying every night over a 90% grade.
I think you’ll be a great mother, academic pressure is a reason why my mental health isn’t great, so I hope people like you can change that for their kids :)
No no no! You just don't get it! Getting A's is very important. You must be the best of the best and not accept mediocre scores because that won't bring you much success in the world and the workforce . I study up to 12 hours a day and I love it... Well I'm used to it now
@@Aj-me8mo Well, then perhaps you benefit in this type of format, which is great! 👍 However, not everyone can do it in this way. For example, some people would rather have young kids stay inside to learn. However, much of the modern workforce requires a hand on approach. Kids, especially active ones, may benefit from exploratory learning by being outside for instance. Obviously, it’s far from perfect, but maybe learning could be take a varied approach. It would be better to emphasize personal health as well as its integral to learning and strength.
Considering how in the United States, a large amount of people I've talked too (and myself included) have seriously contemplated suicide at least once, it doesn't surprise me as much as it should to hear that another country has a similar situation. Though how many actually carry it out here is probably much lower, and in my personal experience is probably because my high school at least was actually rather nice.
😂 If you didn't really get it: It is a class thing. People from upper classes usually have 'good jobs' that is achieved only through being a top student. Upper class people have a circle of friends with similar jobs and dating someone in those circles is easier ( sometimes only possible)if you are a part of it. If dating leads to marriage then you both are economically stable( to say the least) and also, ensure a good future for your child. This is only the theory from what I have observed and not my personal views. As usually in Asian countries( and I mean all) the class matters alot. So people tend to choose partners who are in same or similar socio-economic position.Even Cinderella would have to study here till death to ensure she gets married to prince. No fairytales. 🙃
@@rmsleftpinkiestoenail6771 Well it really is a tragedy how big of an emphasis is put in quite frankly a shit school system. I live in an Asian country and the peer pressure I felt as a student to get into a good university is suffocating. From what I've seen, most parents knows that what is being taught in school is a complete waste of time, and yet everything is built around the system. Life has become a series of levels, where you need to complete one to move on to another. And in Asian countries in particular, marriage is an absolute must. I told my dad once that I don't want to get married and he thought I was crazy 😂 This tension between the individual and societal expectation will only create couples who doesn't love each other, who doesn't understand how to treat another person. I think it's more a cultural thing.Oh, and I do think that we need relationship classes in school

What is shown in this video is absolutely true, and I'd even say reality is much worse then what's shown in this video. But what's sad is that she was actually really really smart, always being in the top.
@Anti Toxic That is so relatable for me. My school doesn't cause me stress the way these schools do, but I'm depressed for a totally different reason.. I'm a full out REBEL and I tend to question the rules and authority. But the thing is, I go to an extremely religious school so if I express my mind, I can get *expelled* and this would ruin my future in my community.. So I have to bottle up all my opinions and save them till I'm older. And it is SO hard, it makes me depressed.. I just want to run away.. So my parents think that getting me broadway tickets and the best luxuries will make me happy. But it doesn't. Only Freedom will...

We need children, teens, and young adults to be encouraged to Question the rules. Don't try to be perfect because "perfect" doesn't exist. The main issue isn't suicide though, its a problem but poses no real existential threat to the existence of the nation. The real issue is the constant scrambling for academic achievement leaves young adults with very inept interpersonal skills/ time for personal relationships leading to record breaking low birth rates. These birth rates will first strain the economy by putting the burden of looking after an ever increasingly aging population on an increasingly diminishing workforce. If not its not changed soon the south Korean government itself predict the nation will simply no longer exist in 700 years time. granted 700 years is plenty of anything to happen but its still a pretty surprising statistic given how rapidly the world population is growing in general.

I wish we could switch schools for like a week just so you can see. Just so you can see Detroit Public Schools and I could go to South Korea
I’ve been to South Korea before (like a few years ago) and I was a pretty small kid, there weren’t many kids around in the street. But when I asked my mom where they were she told me that they’re usually studying inside and don’t have time to come outside. I felt bad, so I asked if we could buy some candy for them. I’m pretty sure I got jolly ranchers, lollipops and kit kats. Lots of kids started coming out at 8pm, and I think all the candy was gone by 8:10pm since everyone wanted some from the stress they’re having.
the fact that these kids cant even have leisure time away from their studies without people constantly reminding them about their future is heartbreaking.
Even their motivational mentality is screwed up. "What? You're tired, stressed, burned out, and suicidal? Don't worry! Keep working and you'll get there!" instead of: "It's not worth your health and well being"

@@woilah794 Replying to your second comment. In S. Korea, the smart ones learn everything in elementary school, and then study for the single test day for the next how many years.

Well, then perhaps you benefit in this type of format, which is great! 👍
However, not everyone can do it in this way. For example, some people would rather have young kids stay inside to learn.

Obviously, it’s far from perfect, but maybe learning could be take a varied approach.

If you didn't really get it: It is a class thing.
As usually in Asian countries( and I mean all) the class matters alot. because of most of young people didn't want to live that pointless robot life
The main issue isn't suicide though, its a problem but poses no real existential threat to the existence of the nation. As a person who is living in Korea, this is really sad. The pressure from the parents to their child to study excessively from a young age is extreme. These children, if they don’t meet up to the expectations of their parent’s, get very stressed because of the scolding they will receive. They should be sleeping and learning more valuable things instead of solely investing their lives in academics from grade 1 to 12. I hope this situation improves any time soon.

@@komocakeps527 it is very true for some of them. My Korean friend told me too. Basically in Korea the most common way to find a gf or bf is to be introduced to each other by friends. So friends suggest someone they know and one of the first questions is 'what uni does she / he goes to" and it has to be same league or higher than the other persons. Or they wouldn't even go on a date. Of course its not true for all Koreans . But it definitely is a real thing. Good education increases your status and chances to marry well.

Korea is so successful because of their work ethic, but they aren't a very creative country. Which traps the non-academic into a suicidal pit. Time to start encouraging students to write stories, make paintings, write music and make films. You need to give an avenue for people to express themselves and innovate. Those kids commiting suicide might have not fit the academic mold, but they may have fit an artistic one! Keep creating avenues! Nothing wrong with hard work, but if one has no interest in their work, it will only lead to death and depression.

what do u mean its not a creative country? it is
@@angel-tq8gn i don't think so. Look at the animation industry in korea for example compared to japan. Korea just works on american and japanese products rather than making their own.
@@jaypivot1191 its creative in other ways not just animation..?? do u think anime is the only way of being creative pls what a weeb look up the definition of creative for me.
@@angel-tq8gnI used animation as an example. Name me an industry that korea is creative in. Its main industries are manufacturing. Microchipping, ship building, electronics, and car manufacturing. All modelled off of other country's industries. Same with the political system and economic systems that are based off of the United States. There is k-pop and k-dramas but even then they are mostly recycling tried and true plot line or musical themes with a cast or song group that must fit the beauty standards of the society or receive plastic surgury to fit the mold. Korea has a very exacting beauty standard down to exact height (180cm) and double eyelids. Korea has a long way to go, and it does not yet nurture creativity or difference. Not in its school systems or its society.
The only exception is film. Otherwise Korea is a very rigid society that doesn't allow difference. A very conservative country that shuns industries that don't obviously make money (the creative ones). The fact that filmmakers come out of that system is accidental more than intentional.
Lastly, it has mandatory military service. So please tell me, in what way is korea creative?

respect to the mom who didnt put her daughter in cram school, she's probably going to be the happiest out of most of her peers
We can only hope
@Saksham Shukla Unfortunately, that is not the usual case. If you define success as making more money, better job, etc.
@Saksham Shukla Yea I remember reading some studies that your happiness does get affected by income but up to a certain point. Anything above $7K/month doesn't really increase your happiness that much.
yea im so glad my asian parents are barely strict
but she gonna be broke, forget having a happy and forfilling life; secure the bag and hope regret doesn't set in during your later years
These comments from students are heartbreaking.
I know this is easier said than done but if you can, convince your parent to send you abroad to study. You are smart, gather information about unis make a pitch if you have to because you truly do t need to lose your childhood to succeed!
I can’t imagine what you’re going through but I can sympathise, if the above doesn’t work try your best, graduate and move somewhere else. And please, remember when you get older to break the cycle.
Don’t inflict this torture onto your kids. Best of luck!
My family’s grade rating

I'm a Korean student. Now it's 3a.m, but I still have too much homework to do until tomorrow. To go school, I have to wake up at 7a.m. We have to sleep only 3-4 hours a day. After school, we have to go academy for 5hours. It's a very hard to do. Korean students don't have a dream, hope, and happiness. Nevertheless it's a very serious problem, Korea's education hasn't changed. Elementry school students have to learn high school's math, too.
Im sorry for you man, i hope you'll just be fine :)
"Elementary school students should learn high school math" excuse me is that true?? Thats a very demanding society
Aye yo I hope u stay strong because I know everything will go great, but I'm just a TTV who just plays with no one watching me.....anyway have a good day/night.
@@woilah794 Replying to your second comment. In S. Korea, the smart ones learn everything in elementary school, and then study for the single test day for the next how many years. They study because unlike America and probably other European countries, Korea only has one college test on one day. That means that if you fail it, you are considered a failure, wasting an entire year just to wait and take the test again. Every job basically requires a college degree now, much like a highschool degree in America (GED as I think they are called). It's basically education bootcamp. No procrastinating or else you get essentially 0 sleep. And yet here I am..... fuuuuu
I would fail in elementary school very easy I feel bad for you :( I hope everything’s okay there!
Who else got really stressed out just by watching this?
it made me very uneasy
I know right 😪
Me!
@@shrutis hahaha same
Reading the title alone was enough to make me so uncomfortable
so now I can confirm that most high school kdramas are unreal and inaccurate i guess. when i watch coming of age movies or dramas i always feel like i am missing out and lonely because I don't relate to any of those dramas
I'm a Korean student and I'm 18. Me and my friends have to study really hard and have to push ourselves into our desk even when we are too exhausted. We obviously have to give up our time to sleep as well. Even our school teacher said we have to be a studying machine to survive This is a serious problem and it's really sad that this system isn't gonna change.
Hope u all great your children better
I hope you’re doing well!
For me I don’t care about my grades as long as I pass my exam I’m satisfied and also studying for long hours doesn’t define your future.
All memes aside, This is actually depressing

Regardless, still tooo bad
If that was true, George Soros would be the poorest man in the world.
He's an investor who doesn't need to see people to make investment decisions, totally irrelevant!
Nope. I believe there are still people willing to care, an that there is still hope for a better world.
never been so happy im not from S. korea
I really like these videos, I love learning and these are perfect for people who struggle paying attention for longer periods of time
The sadest thing is the song. They literally said "work and fuck sleep". It feels like that honestly it's depressing.
Téo Rychembusch who the fuck hates sleeping???
@@BabySonicGT evidently those people who sang the song
What song?..
Téo Rychembusch yeah, I honestly would commit suicide if I was in this position. Used to have a 3.5 gpa, good grades and club involvement and I dropped all of it to enjoy an easier life of online school that feels great for my health and I will graduate early.(not saying it was something worth dieing over but life is so much more.)
Yeah they make them like robots
Solves one problem
Brain: alright 20min break.
wow you are so lazy it's hilarious!!! SHUT THE FUCK UP AND MAKE MY FUCKING DINNER JACKASS
That's why Norway and Finland are top of life education and less re-offending rate. 2% compared to USA which re-offending rate is 70% even though punishment and sentence and jails r harsh and unkind...
5 hours of school.
Barless jails of luxury and better conditions than a house as a jail!
But a better rate of safety and education and success.
People forget that to thrive ...u NEED THAT BREAK AND LIKE A BATTERY .. U MUST RE CHARGE. TEACH HATE WITH LOVE NOT WITH THE SAME CRIME THERE FOR BEING A HYPOCRITICAL BEING. WAKE UP PEOPLE.

@@obscured9414 lol keep in mind Finland is smaller than ONE single state out of 50 in the U.S. so less crime and more manageable education that can fit to everyones need is much easier there compared to ethnically diverse america and it's huge population.
@@obscured9414 I bet he is more successful than me, I'm an unemployed heroin addict only thing I do better than this jackass is play guitar and sing hee hee. Pray for me my survival rate is very low statistically speaking. Good luck out there mate
No wonder majority of kpop idols dropped out and just opted for pursuing becomin a singer, dancer, or rapper, either solo, or in a group. If this is how tough academics is for them, yeah Id rather find a way out. But then again, there's no guarantee either that youll be a famous kpop group, nor a guarantee to be internationally recognized, let alone barely any guarantee to debut. Plus the pressure of their beauty standards. Holy shit I hope their youths are fine 😭😭
PLEASE DON'T BE AFRAID OF MISTAKES🥺
It makes me so sad that they are dealing with such psychological pressure 🥺....the fact that she cries by only one mistake, concerns me like hell 🥺.
I won't complain for my study schedule anymore cuz that's like just 5% of 10% .....
SENDING LOTS OF HUGS ND LUV TO ALL THE STUDENTS IN S.KOREA(all the ppl dealing with such pressure) FROM INDIA 🇮🇳.... FIGHTING ✊ YOU CAN DO IT.
