I always preferred Tracie Young on backing vocals to Weller than Dee C. Lee from Wham! Apparently, Tracie is now a radio presenter at Radio Essex.

A great live version of a great song, I was a young mod back then and fancied the arse off Tracie Young, I wasn't over keen on her solo material but I loved her spell in the Style Council, I also missed two good opportunities to see the SC back in 83 and again in 84, i'd seen The Jam four times and at the time i was still a little pissed with Weller for splitting them up.

    • @brandon2912t
      @brandon2912t 2 года назад +4

It's funny that I mentioned this very thing in another video about when PW split up The Jam and the fans were a little pissed off with him as Rick and Bruce knew that without him the band could never really fill that spot. I loved everything that The Jam did, I was not able to see them live but my elder brother did at the Rainbow. My brother already had a good record collection and so I had so many bands to choose from and I loved them all even many metal and punk bands like the early/original Ultravox line up, x-ray spex, UK subs, sham 69, Richard Head and the Voidoids (cool name lol) to name a few. I grew up with such a variety as my older sister was so different and loved Simon and Garfunkel, The Carpenters, Bread and loads of classical too, then my own foray into music led me to early stuff of Level 42, George Benson, Marvin Gaye......yeah what a mix, but I love and appreciate all music except for Rockerbilly style, twangy country and thrash metal! It has been cool sharing stories, have a great day!

@@brandon2912t Thank you for a great comment it's very much appreciated, it's a shame you didn't get to see The Jam they never disappointed live, you mentioned some great bands from the 70s punk era, I played the first Clash album to death back then lol, I listen to so much different music nowadays it's so good having all these different decades to choose from, as a young kid growing up my mom used to listen to The Carpenters which I loved back then and still do, Karen's voice is incredible, I have my parents to thank for turning me on to some real 60s and 70s greats like The Kinks,The Byrds, The Hollies, The Beach Boys, The Shadows, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Jefferson Aeroplane, Mamas and the Papas, The Small Faces and obviously The Beatles just to name a few, from the 70s Steely Dan, The Eagles, The Dooby Brothers, CNS and Young (also his solo stuff), Pink Floyd and Fleetwood Mac to which I love the 60s and 70s material equally again just to name a few so big shout to my parents for that.
Again thanks for your comment and you also have a great day.

The Jam were amazing live , huge shock when they split , I feel sorry for Rick and Bruce to this day , they were cast aside in a really shabby way , Weller behaved very dishonestly .
The first 2 years of The Council were fabulous but then they went off the boil, Weller was wrapped up with D C Lee ,obsessed with multiculturalism and virtue signalling and seemed to write alot of the songs around their relationship ( around the time of the Cost of Loving album ). It all became a became a bit soppy.
I did enjoy the ' Confessions ' album but it was very 'arty farty ' and not to everyone's taste.
By then ( 1988/9) they'd lost alot of the Jam following and managed to alienate many fans..the irony being that he split the Jam when they were at their Zenith , yet let the Council blunder on a downward spiral until the record company refused to release their next album which signalled the end.
Weller ended the TSC days wearing shorts on stage and growing a moustache and looking like a man who'd lost the plot.
My favourite time in music was the last 2 years of The Jam and first 2 of the Council and this record was one of the best of that period..
Still right up there in my top 5 songs ever and I love this version.
( it's actually a huge copy of ' Surrender to the rhythm " by Brinsley Schwarz ' )
Traceys ' voice went superbly with his, she was a real talent and should have gone further . She signed to Wellers Respond label but his ideas of being the next Motown never really caught on.
There was an album ' Love the Reason ' by all the artists he signed , I played it to death.
By some accounts Tracy was a pain in the arse to work with .
This song just reminds me of my favourite era when I was 17 and everything was possible .

Nice to see this again. After The Jam split and this 45 came out I thought it was pretty good and there was something good on the way. Unfortunately, for me it wasn't so. I bought a handful of singles, but interest waned. The same year, The Truth were on the rise, after the (temporary) end of Nine Below Zero, and although never fulfilled their promise on vinyl, I did see a couple of times in '83 and were brilliant. Also, Mod-wise, as that seemed to be a lot of his audience (like it or not!) Squire, The Prisoners, The Times were also releasing really great records. Style Council released some really good singles, but to be honest, Weller's solo 'return' in 1990/91 was a welcome one. Merton Mick always under-rated though....

  • @marcrollins

    I have something to say.
I've seen a lot of people saying Paul didn't get good at singing until the 80s... well maybe that's when he came into his own... Maybe some didn't like his style of singing before the 80s but that doesn't mean he wasn't good at it; however, maybe those people just aren't in tune with the more torn down parts of music, I'm not sure, but if you ever became more open-minded as far as music with lowered production values I bet The Jam would be at the tippity top of your list
