Personally, I think his Style Council work was the best part of Weller's career. Man Of Great Promise is one of the best pop songs ever written! I was 21 years old and just leaving uni... Whole life in front of me... Now 61!
A huge step down from the Jam for many of us who stopped following - passing the baton over to a new crowd who think this is 'soul'... End of an era - but it was time for many of us to grow up amd move to pastures new anyway!
Paul Weller is an interesting character. Seems dark, a bit depressed, but determined to channel that energy into musical expression. There’s something really attractive about the way he was doing this, because ultimately it was never about some kind of style or scene, I get the feeling it was all super personal for him, and perhaps a matter of survival. He would never be able to pander to what his crowd wanted exactly, and that left him an enigma that made him even more attractive. The music was OK.
I remember watching this around when it was broadcast. For all their pretentiousness and political posturing, The Style Council had great fashion sense and some good songs. Some Jam fans I know wouldn't touch anything Weller after The Jam, but they did have some cool stuff in my mind.
This is a great set. Unlike ToTP the tube was live and the band are absolutely killing it. Weller is an underrated guitar player, check out the speed of his right hand to keep the rhythm going and along with some interesting chord changes.
I think Weller was just sick of the multitudes of mod revival sychophants following him around in the Jam amd tried to break free into this white boy soul. Thr Style Council weren't bad but the music doesn't compare with eithr The Jam or some later Weller solo stuff
So they are promoting a few songs from the 1985 album... not a fan of these later songs.. first 2 years are the primary excellent years of the Style Council then they become rather muddy. Excellent live sound though, nice to see the band in this form and out in the open.
From the 60s all good British pop music was inspired by black music from the Beatles, through Led Zeppelin and up to and including punk and its aftermath. Blues, rock and roll, soul, ska and reggae it was begun by black musicians!
I was 24 years young in 1984. I'm 64 now in 2024 as I'm viewing this. I like Style Councils music. Good fun music . 🎶
Ditto
I turned 21 in '84. 80's were the best. No argument.

Great times! I’m now 65!
The Jam for me
@@bhudster10 I'm glad we got both
I agree. Saw The Jam in 1982 and Weller solo 1993 but after all these years Looking back The Style Council was his best work.
The Jam was good but the Style Council was great!
Japanese
One of my favorite bands EVER. A sound unlike any other.
God I miss these days
I was there ! the 80`s I mean...brilliant !
Me too best days of our lives !! 💃❤
Imagine being so talented to create music in so many styles! Jam, TSC & all that solo material. Amazing
Such a hopeful gem from ‘84. Weller’s peak TSC songwriting era 84\85. Still hoping for a TSC reunion🙏🇺🇸
This is my era brilliant!! 😍👌
Best days of my life ! Style Council tunes , Casuals in E5 and DC lee , life was good 😇
It was the best time of his career
It was the best summer of my life…
I woukd say the same. Was 23 that August. I would say it was the last free year and summer of my life....because life got in the way after that.
They built the bridge between disco funk and acid jazz
This is pure magic.
hahahahahahahahahahahahaha
I have been listening to him since I was a teen in the 1980s.
Style council ❤
Micks brother was a 18-30s holiday rep in ibiza ,i met him😊
What a beautiful show ❤!! Imiss Paul Weller and Style Council
Just saw him perform this a couple of months ago in El Cajon.... He was brilliant.
🌟♥️🌟🌟🌟 j’adore, mon groupe préféré 🥰 Paul weller est magistral ♥️♥️🌟🌟🙏🙏
“Shout to the Top” was peak Style Council. I saw them live around that time and it was a great show. Thanks for posting! 🤘🏻
Man Of Great Promise was their best track!
A rare sighting of Helen Turner on keyboards!
I still love this Song. Soooooooooooo great also in 2024.
A great quality recording of an excellent set
Thanks🍻
@@酒井隆志-u6d Yes.. whatever you said! The Style Council!
Watch the tube then off to the student union with John Smiths at 70p a pint and find out who was having a party. Happy days.
Great band great days❤
What a beautiful man

J'adore cette version live !!!

61 here. Great memories. I hope for the past….as backwards a phrase as the upside world the powers that be have given us
Ormai ho 61 anni. Mi mancano da morire gli anni 80
A chi lo dici....
Absolutely great track. ❤ Style council. Soo cool!! But I'm biased ❤ Mr Weller 😊
Never see the likes of ' the Tube' again sadly
Class love it ❤
Dee looks amazing in this..

almost 40 years ago to the very day.
Dee Cee Lee 😍
Id forgotten her name of course she had a great voice.
❤🥰
Nossa como o Paul é lindo demais🇬🇧🇧🇷
Shout to the top my best track 80's
Weller was way ahead of his fans at the time. Jazz was not what we wanted at that time.
It's what I wanted
It's more Soul Music, no?
Speak for yourself.

Egg zackly!
That ain't 'Jazz'! 🤡
Yeah….it’s jot rally jazz is it? More white soul music.
Top!!!❤ great band
Cracking band -- totally missed this piece from The Tube till now!
Delicious❤❤❤
Shout
Lindo e talentoso !!!
Yes paul, there was nothing left, you had too shout to the top....the jam, is a distant memory....
The Mod Father !
Wonderful music. Music as Protest. Talk to me, What's going on? ❤
Style !!!
There's nothing certain in these days of mine?
reminds me of haircut 100
+1 for Steve White, but I still don't get it - even 40 years on.
why did they not post the best track (last one) on the TV?
Freschissimo
The first ever tube with The Jam was a much better set imo
cool
Maybe Weller’s middle name is “Derivative”
god bless paul weller
We are the Mods, we are the Mods!! 🫡
Ah the years when people were trying to like Weller....what people really wanted was the Jam
agreed
Nah, The Style Council were a big advancement o The Jam. Weller's best period was The Style Council years.
@@QuicknStraight Pleased you enjoyed it. I did actually watch them play Brixton Academy mid 80s . A professional show but looking back muzak
👍

I think Weller was just sick of the multitudes of mod revival sychophants following him around in the Jam amd tried to break free into this white boy soul. Thr Style Council weren't bad but the music doesn't compare with eithr The Jam or some later Weller solo stuff
It eclipses The Jam by a distance. Much more inventive and creative.

Muito bom
Strepitosi !!!
Clearly,Weller is inspired by black music as well he should have been but the only problem is that a white man can't pull that off.
From the 60s all good British pop music was inspired by black music from the Beatles, through Led Zeppelin and up to and including punk and its aftermath. Blues, rock and roll, soul, ska and reggae it was begun by black musicians!
It’s literally just a white man singing to 70s soul backing.
Outside England it’s quite average really.
Pish
no style and even less substance. they are a joke
This is cringe compared to The Jam, sorry
How this was a good band that were very original
Repetitive and leads to absolutely no reward after it stops.
What .. they're on fire!
