I love this song . David Bowie and Carlos Alomar ( the black guy standing behind and off to the left of Bowie in this performance ) are the rare artists in rock and pop music who got better as they aged . In the 90s into the 2000s imho Bowie helped create better live musical arrangements for this song and Bowie's singing range became larger and with more variety of vocalizations . Alomar while being basically a rhythm guitarist at this time, but also brought funk and various rhythms to Bowie's repertoire ( Fame 1975 is one of the notable songs Alomar helped create the basic musical part of ) Today Alomar in his 60s has also become a superb virtuoso guitarist . However you will seldom see him perform because he has been a professor in the music department of a major university ( sorry forgot the name ) for at least the past 15 or so years .
Great seeing this version with Adrian Belew going Ape on electric guitar! I personally think Earl Slick's version fits the song's groove better, but Bowie was always about change as we know. And lets not forget that Carlos Alomar on rhythm guitar was a big part of Stay as well.
What’s really weird, is that even though the music is clearly rooted in the style of 1978 (disco/funk), the fashions here seem to foreshadow everything that was to come in the 80s. It’s like the 80s created it’s entire identity based on the fashions in this video, lol.
