David Bowie - Thin White Duke Rehearsals - 01 - Station To Station, Suffragette City

- here's a nice rarity of bowie rehearsing for the thin white duke tour in (i believe) philidelphia. featuring earl slick on guitar. let me know if y'all dig this and i'll upload further clips from this session.
I understand this period is the height of his issues and drug addiction, but damn, his vocals are spot on, and sound as good, or possibly better than the record. Unbelievable talent.
Tammy Rodriguez yes!
Cocaine won’t do anything to you, it’s not something that fucks you up like alcohol and weed. Like you can drive and be active while on coke but not drunk
@@AJ-hs2ld i imagine it was more than just cocaine that Bowie had trouble with, and it could more or less also have to do with his experiences in the LA slums honing his new (but brief) Reactionary stance in politics, along with an eruption of a spiritual/existential crisis that may have been building up for a while "I always felt I was on the edge of events, the fringe of things, and left out. "
and all that anger becomes correlated with his unhappy marriage with Angie etc
Bowie was heavy drinker and cocaine user. Live only on milk and red pepper
The look he gives at 3:09 to Carlos with those awful background vocals is hilarious. Also, at 3:43 where David is cracking up...
I wish there was more concert footage from this period.
this alone is worth watching the video, hahaha! Yes!
haha Brilliant moments! :D
Stacy Heydon on lead guitar, not Earl Slick. A criminally overlooked Bowie sideman. Fucking gigantic tone and a perfect winding intro solo. Opening a huge song for a huge icon would make most guitarists shit their pants. Stacy brought a Telecaster, an afro, and a shit load of talent. Nailed it like a boss.
I thought that?
Stacy Haydon ubonded music after this tour. Also this is first and last tour for him. Never played guitar ever. It’s shame i bet he become best guitarist on world. 20 years old in1976
@@nikeu7110 oh thats a real shame, really like his playing
3:43 - I love this moment when David starts singing to the vocal accompaniment and they get lost ... then he looks at it and starts laughing! 😉👍🏼
Seeing David Bowie smile and laugh because of the background vocals put such a big smile on my own face, and I couldn't help but laugh with him. This really shows how good of a sport he is! Can you imagine what other performers would have done? They'd probably get annoyed, stop the rehearsal, and scold the one doing bg vocals -- just make a big deal out of it overall. Instead we have this gentleman continue on singing. Love David Bowie so much!
Pretty sure it was a joke as he was purposely botching it
Carlos Alomar is a Genius.
YES
But this isn't Carlos Alomar!!
Part of me wished that i saw David Bowie live because he's amazing even in rehearsals and Dennis Davis on drums mannnnn he's killing it.Unfortunately we lost both amazing artists in 2016 in both David Bowie and Dennis Davis
Solid Gold! The best version of station to station i've ever heard! Especially when he gets the words wrong!
In my opinion every song of the show is a best version of its original. There's not only music in it, there's a full atmosphere. I think Bowie was the kind of artist whose you can't dissociate his music and his character. If you don't like one of these, you just can't like David Bowie at all. I really think he would not have the same success if he didn't have that talent in composition and incarnation. Plus he was original, which didn't hurt either. All these advantages made him a phenomenon, a rockstar, a name, a face, a singer anyone knows. An icon.
Sweet Jesus this is incredible.
I once saw Station To Station live in Munic 76 and 78. I remember that it was the most overwhelming sound I ever ever ever heard in my life: The Noise of the trains, Olympic Station, Coming eacht from left and right and CRASHING....than Music opens for the Intro to the song....ohhh
Lucky you! By any chance did you take any photos, recordings, etc at the shows?
RIP David Bowie a one off and a genuine legend. You may have passed away from us, but your music will live for ever 11/01/16
Perfect Comment
Bowie died on the 10th January 2016 not the 11th
I love how spontaneous and in a good mood he is in this performance ... the musicians of course, a very good band. The penalty is the quality of the sound but it is enjoyed with what you have at hand. Thanks!
He's not only a incredible human being is also THE GOD OF ROCK ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I've seen over 35 times and each and every time he's always just amazed me....what an incredible artist....
I only saw him once, actually twice (I repeated two days in a row on the same tour). It was very strange because they seemed like two different Bowies. The public did not know that the first day was bad and they almost failed (I knew that days after the performances). And a very serious Bowie came out (now I think that on that tour he didn't stop moving and he had to be terrible, that's how the bad mood was reflected on his face), he acted just and didn't do a single encore. The second day was as if he had touched a magic wand because the smile and connection with the public was total... he really was someone else! In addition, he said goodbye after leaving and adding another four classics in which we did not stop singing and jumping... I have the feeling engraved in my soul!
Always marvelous! RIP Ziggy, Duke, our adorable starman David Robert Jones! ! love you and miss you so much! But thank you for everything you done!
Saw Bowie about 8 times over the years. The only true rock God in my view. Really miss you David
Mind-blowing Bowie rehearsals.
+SeaBassVamp
wow... so glad I found this
Evan McNeeley Cool:)
+Evan McNeeley same here!
His rehearsals have more energy than most people's actual performances!
burpie
I hear that!
Love this version!
I saw it in Helsinki, Finland. Best concert ever!
Lucky you! By any chance did you take any photos, recordings, etc at the show?
Stacy Heydon on guitar, very good!
The sexiest talker, looker , singer , dresser and intellectual to have aroused our ears and other parts . 😁
Bowie correctly captured the Faustian spirit here
Attention earthlings! The Master has left this planet. You may now return to your policy of wanton destruction. You have 5 years left. END TRANSMISSION.
+Topal Glangus 5 years? What a surprise.
5 years? That's all we got?
5 years? my brain hurts a lot
2 years...
Shit he was right
"The European cannon is HERE" *windows shatter*
My god, he's a vocal powerhouse in spite of forgetting words and archaic recording technology. We've been blessed to live at this point in time to enjoy him, even after his passing. To everyone that watched all this unfold in real time, I AM SO JEALOUS 😭
Saw Bowie about 8 times over the years and once at the Hammersmith Odeon! Miss him but understand that such travellers need to continue their journey. RIP dear dear David
definately upload more please..bowie is on top form...I miss him more than words can say...huge huge part of my life...this makes me so happy..thankyou
I love you and miss you David. So glad this small piece of your work survives. And the internet/ royalty holders haven't taken it down, Personally I hope I can keep finding these gems for years to come. XXXX
This is Stacey Heydon on guitar - would love to see some 1974 footage of Earl Slick & backing musicians on the Diamond Dogs tour if anyone has anything to post, cos virtually all the footage thats on RUclips, Philadelphia, etc is just of Bowie
Thats because they were hidden on the stage! They didn't like it either. Then the second part of the tour they were seen more.+Philip H
Saw Bowie at the Wembley gig on his Station to Station tour & he was fantastic… I think I saw Bowie about four times in all & that show was undoubtedly the best… he did an amazing version of Diamond Dogs, holding onto these long leads… but I can’t recall what was on the other end of them lol!
Lucky you! By any chance did you take any photos, recordings, etc at the show?
@@dyermaker4731 Unfortunately I didn’t, I’m not sure I even had a working camera back then. I actually bunked into the Empire Pool as it was known back then with a mate, I was working as a ‘display artist’ for RCA Records at the time & had a couple of boxes of Station to Station sleeves I used to help bluff our way in. I told the security guard the records (he didn’t realise they were empty sleeves!) were for me to give out to David’s guests & that I’d leave a few for him after the show. The bluff worked a treat & we got to sit quite near the stage, but made sure we left in a hurry once the concert ended & before the Security guard realised he’d ‘been Tangoed’!
I love Carlos' Alembic 6 string, the only one I've ever seen. Some lucky bastard bought it for $11,000 in 2007!
No, this is Stacy Heydon, last minute replacement for Earl Slick at rehearsals in Toronto, Canada right before USA Isolar Tour 1976. Fantastic band with the now late George Davis on drums.
Dennis Davis on drums, may he RIP. George Murray's on bass.
amazing rarity!
please UPLOAD more....
thanks a mint!
Too bad Stacey Heydon didn't continue with Bowie. His style is a great cross between the intensity of an Earl Slick and the outrageous avant-garde play of Adrian Belew.
I don't know if you can say it was too bad, considering that the next lead player was Adrian Belew.
Davvero emozionante..grazie per il video..love Bowie
Maurice, Absolutely dig this. Thank you and please....................more. Classic. And merci for your contributions.
Loved watching them rehearsing, he’s so great and I have always loved him all through his career ! Seen him in concert only once ! ❤️❤️❤️
That is just brilliant.
yes ! we love it !!!!!!!!upload further clips from this session.like deal slick !!!!!! on guitar
this is why i love bowie songs
I love the heavier Bowie stuff so much! All the Tin Machine rock/roll, and later things like Telling Lies, I'm Afraid of Americans et al. The man made some of the heaviest jams, but I don't hear him described that way at all. People want Ziggy, but he put young Mr. Stardust in a shallow grave "somewhere between New York and Los Angeles".
Quality, great to see behind the scenes of a true great.
More please.
Thank you so much for posting this awesome film. History here. Just incredible footage
Amazing footage. thank You
Saw the 1976 tour in Detroit. Bowie played the Dali film with the eye slicing scene. That fuck me up big time. I thought about suing him. I mean I bought a ticket to a concert.
That's my Bowie story.
+Dee Donner Ramone Wuss. Fucking philistine.
Un Chien Andalou. Bowie loved Bunuel. Props to him for keeping silent film classics alive. Dude had good taste.
+vulgarfvckr Well said ! And Man... d'ya hear that knucklehead ? He said he considered SUING him ! Man, how laughable is that ! Effing conservative, square-thinking dude ! His Bowie story can get lost, as far as i'm concerned...
Peace up to all REAL Bowie fans outta there !
***** yeah wtf @ suing Bowie over one's very own lack of artistic understanding or creative comprehension. whadda dickbag! dude probably has never listened to a FULL Bowie record.
+vulgarfvckr Bowie 76 in Rochester NY was my first concert. I was 11 years old. Yeah that film through me for a loop. But suing Bowie never crossed my mind. Great show !! That was the night he got arrested for smoking weed.
Yes if course upload more. Love this album and the live versions that exist of it. This is some great feedback fiddling Earl is known well for. :-)
All praises to Bowie.
That's Stacey Heydon on lead guitar and Carlos Alomar on rhythm. Earl likely had already been fired by Bowie's management when this was shot.
You're correct
So good to see even geniuses make mistakes and have fun with it. Everybody who makes music knows how fucking hard it is to sound completely right every time.
Bloody brilliant .keep this stuff coming and the 78 shows .thanks x
3:39 Priceless. Fucking priceless, I'll tell ya!
Not Earl Slick on guitar. It's Stacy Heydon. His brother in law uploaded rehearsal footage from Vancouver with unbelievable guitar solo for last 6 minutes of Stay.
Thank you for these. I saw this tour at the Philadelphia Spectrum.. is this where this is filmed? I am blown away by this. Flash back
There is a recording of the Philadelphia show that can be found on RUclips. By any chance did you take any photos, recordings, etc at the show yourself?
brilliant..upload more please
lovvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvve this...thanks...one of my favs...lovesomeEarlSlick
No earthlings! Please disregard that last response as it is just a warning of what will happen should you all stay on this thoughtless journey! If David (Bowie) Jones meant anything to you as a leader genius and creative force then need this warning and change your selfish ways. Let us all remember that those songs were written in the early seventies and we are still here. Amazing isn't it? So get off your fat asses and take responsibility for yourself for a welcome change. We will be watching each and every one of you! And you better believe we ain't messing around this time!
definitely, not enough earl slick with bowie.
I wonder if Slick recieves royalties for the stuff he wrote for Bowie? Golden Years and such..
DAMN STRAIGHT WE DIG THIS!!
...so excellent....
thank you for this upload
We dig, more please ✌️
Not Earl Slick on guitar. He was on the original album track
Good eye - Slick played on the Diamond Dogs tour (saw it 3x at the Universal in L.A.), but not on this tour.
Yes, I am Thankful for this too - Well done, your upload, also the otheres from this sesseion.
Yes please upload more of the rehearsal. Any info on date?
Yes please, me too...
Vancouver Rehearsals feb 2nd 1976
The Thing White Duke. A shadow Bowie ran from the rest of his days.
Most Excellent .... I wish my Yotube Bowie Interpretations does him proud ... so cool.
this is even better than the record
Simplesmente incrível 😻
Jep..thats Stacey Hayden on Tele.Oh boy and these are only rehearsals.
Für immer genial
Stacey Heydon on guitar not Earl Slick. One of the best gigs I ever went to.
Buzzing tonitht
dig. så pls upload it all,, the version of waiting is perfect so let's see it
Thanks for posting this, love it!
More please....
Post all, so I can finally have put this on a DVD.
David Bowie - vocals, saxophone
Stacey Heydon - lead guitar
Carlos Alomar - rhythm guitar
George Murray - bass guitar
Dennis Davis - drums
Tony Kaye - keyboards, synthesizers From Yes.
Dearest Maurice Underwood, where are the other rehearsal uploads with which you tease us?
Evasive and shy, I know, but please coax them into uploading.
It's the best. Not Earl Slick though, but Stacy Haydon on lead guitar. The loudest ever on a Bowie tour:)
Una maza amigo como se rie ke coro buenisimo 10
Damn those backing vocals were awful lmao
Yep he sings as well as David... ...Guetta
Carlos Alomar
ZaggySturdust ...and too damn loud as well 😂😂
You can even see the Looks david gives carlos. :-D
90% sure Carlos was doing it as a piss take haha, you couldn't see him on the stage as he was doing it so that's why he was fucking around
Actually, it's Stacy Heydon on guitar, not Earl Slick. Slick is on the studio album but did not participate in the tour.
I think this is the bootleg form Canada 76, have had the dvd for about 11 years
Isn't that Stacey Haydon on guitar? It sure ain't Earl Slick!
Yes
Yes ! I Saw this tour - Cow Palace in SF - best show I've ever seen bar none !
I thought that Stacey Haydon was left handed though ?
keith dion I was there, too. Fantastic!
@@keithdion754 Lucky you! By any chance did you take any photos, recordings, etc at the show?
This is incredible. Are you related to George Underwood?
I like Earl Slick more, it has a more original touch to the song, stacey heydon I like it as its towards solos is like opening a door and closing it again, there is another 76 'concert in Rotterdam and the instruments are heard more clearly.
Stacy Heydon on lead guitar, not Earl.
Who's singing harmony vocals?
Carlos Alomar
Azrael Astrum
Thanks :-D
Stacey Heydon on lead, Carlos on rhythm and the worst backing vox from Carlos!
+themadmad The best part is Bowie looking over towards Carlos and laughing, like WTF??...Sounds like Carlos has his gonads in a vice or something...lol
Sorry, didn't even know this was posted! Yes, Carlos definitely in pain!!
now we've got a RUclips video... superb. Now if they can just delete all the cats falling into toilets it will be a great place again. THanks for uploading, what's the history of the video? cheers for uploading
Lmao, that's not Earl Slick ! with an afro?..sheesh!
No Stacey Heydon
The thin white duke...a very nasty character....indeed
Earl Slick owns these rehearsals
That's not Earl Slick that's Stacy Heydon on lead guitar
THIS ISN'T EARL..
Bowie should have walked over and bitch slapped Carlos Alomar for his hokie-ass out-of-tune vocal...but he was too busy laughing at him! ;>p
They should have fired the backing singer, is that really Carlos Alomar? LOL, stick to the guitar man! :-D
Not Earl Slick Here....Find the real musician....
