Scam Shops in Pakistan & India - Don't Be Fooled!

- While travelling in India & Pakistan you'll find shops that have straight-up copied a famous shop's name, and then, opened their store next-door to the original!
In this video, you'll see the original Grato Jalebi sweet store in Rawalpindi and there's a big queue because locals know it's legit. But just a few metres down the road are 3 copies with the same name.
Karim's in Delhi also has the same problem. There are many counterfeit Karim's restaurants.
These fake shops make enough money to stay open by simply fooling travellers.
So don't be fooled, check online reviews to verify locations. Has this ever happened to you?

I'm indian. When I had gone out of town, I don't remember exactly where I had gone, I was told by a local that there was a very old halwa shop that had some of the best halwa money could buy. When my dad went to get it and brought it back to out hotel room, we had the halwa and it tasted like water. The local then told us that we had gone to a knock off Shop and got scammed :(
sorry to hear you experienced that. When I was a kid, my parents got scammed off their belongings at the airport, right infront of the airplane. A white man and several black men (this was africa) were standing there and the white man took the lead, talking. He convinced my parents to hand over their handbags but my mother insisted on not giving her jewelry, which was smart, because as she feared, they never got the things sent. We lost several things and a camera full of recordings/pictures. They refused to let us on the plane and this is likely why my parents caved in. It was all an abusive scam by airport officials.
@@croissantlover1 damn bro I'm so sorry to hear that :(
My mom, when she was much younger, had a really cool Swiss army knife. When she was boarding the plane, they said that she couldn't take it with her. She said that she would put it in with her check-in baggage but she didn't let her do that. The lady there who was checking all the bags said that she would take it and return it when my mom landed back. When my mom came back, she found that lady and asked her for her knife. You don’t need to go online to verify reviews. The same is anywhere- the best food places always has long queues of locals.
We have good cafes where there is no queue. You have to know the places. It works for street shop mostly.
Unless it's America 😉
This has happened in Sheffield, England, too! There was a shop called Kebabish who made some pretty decent doner kebabs, and eventually people decided to steal the name. Now, there are now 9 Kebabish stores all run by entirely different people and with entirely different menus and quality!
Luckily, the OG Kebabish has rebranded to Original Kebabish and owns the copyright to that name, so it’s pretty easy to distinguish them from the copycats.
There's a takeaway called AK Kebabish in Rotherham on Westgate aswell, and another one round the corner from it on Wellgate called Kebabish 😂
Same in London, there's a cheap fake copy of a worldwide famous Brazilian barbecue house, 'Fogo de Chão', which uses the same name to trick people inside.
Here's a little something folks should know as well. Some fake stores get more famous than the actual store and ending up claiming the official name due to the original shutting down.
This can happen alot and is usually known only by locals or people who been to the original before it closed down. One of them is actually this Malaysian store I found out, called "My Voice Cafe" also known as "Big Bowl Ramen". I'm not too sure about its history but there's copies in its local area a few times when it rose to fame like funniest thing is that RUclipsrs reviewed the FAKE one and made it famous.
Why are there no laws against such things? That's absolutely ridiculous.
There are features like patent but everyone doesn't use
Imagine following laws, hah.
Uneducated people doesn't know copyright exist.
How are you gonna enforce laws in India? Their own goverment doesnt even know the number of people in their country

Like here in KCMO i found the best mexican buffet place, Pardo's, by findin a place with bad reviews from the mostly white reviewers and that was chockfull of hispanic folks ravin about it, as well as chockfull of said hispanic folks eatin at it.
If i followed the white locals here id end up at a texmex place, which isnt what i want when i want mexican.
The thing that rly sealed it for me when i was checkin out the place was seein that one of the reviewers complained that "whole fish with head on is not mexican food! You don't know what you don't know, you won't know if there's fake one or not if you didn't look or warned, people wouldn't doubt every place they want to go and scour the area first. @@Carlos-Mora At that point you’re losing more than you’re making
@organized trash No it’s like saying buy something with five stars on amazon but don’t look at the reviews.
This tends to happen in third world countries. Since copyright restrictions aren’t as strict. Not only that but filing for a name brand isn’t really a thing, people just want to open a shop and get their business going. I’ve seen it happen in Cambodia, Thailand and most parts of Asia. So it’s not going to stop any time soon. Only real remedy is to stick with the crowd. If it ain’t crowded, it ain’t worth eating

Nah, I live in Latin America and we don't do that here

@@dolaaal That’s the sad part. The person that does have pride in their craft tried hard to build their brand, but then they don’t have any protection against people copying them. Everytime I make chicken marsala from a jar
Don't be fooled it's not PewDiePie it's wanna be PewDiePie
Just a clarification on this. All the shops that are located nearby with similar names, are owned by members of the same family.
For example a famous restaurant which was opened in the 60s, the heirs to the owner often open a new place with prefixes like 'New' or their own name before the original brand name.
Though this may be new to many people around the world, but it's quite common in India.
And yes, the most likely fraudulent ones might be using the prefix 'original' 😅
To all the guests who will be visiting India, just make sure that you opt for the ones with better reviews based on the taste rather than going for the oldest one, as the authenticity of taste might not be the best for everyone's palate afterall.
And almost everything is quite delicious 🤤 (except the unhygienic ones that have gone quite viral these days) 😢.

@@User0029-1k he was talking about how the more modernized a country is the less “culture” it looses. I’m just giving some examples. Maybe don’t get offended so easily my friend? You’re setting a bad example for the Indians
@@User0029-1k okay. But still.
This happened to me in Mexico, wondered why the food took an hour. We thought the Restaurant were connected but it wasn't. The guys next to us ate nicely while we sat there and starved then I got scratched by a stray cat. Had to disinfect the wound with tequila and hand sanitizer lol.
it happens almost everywhere, newyork has many papa jones clones too 😅
This is so true. I wish they could do something about it
Intellectual property rights aren't really respected in India & Pakistan. It'll change eventually.
@@KarlRock 😰
@@KarlRock that won't happen in India.
@@soumyadeepsarkar3808 it will .. sooner
I had a similar experience once. So, there was that one time my family and my uncle's decided they wanted to eat together, long story short the restaurant's name was abo goch'... but it wasn't the only one... in fact, there were so many locations sharing it's name, we couldn't even find the correct one! At some point we even arrived at a supermarket. After that we gave up and called our uncle, who said we were basically on the other side of the city!
That Pakistani Jalebi is actually a Nepalese confectionery called Sail-Roti .

Why not? Their food is fire and the people are nice. Before you say it's dangerous, danger exists in all poverty stricken areas on the planet.

I'm OK with going to a copycat to avoid the queue if it's similar to the real thing
When you order PewDiePie from Amazon

One can get confused very easily wid these shops, I often visit the genuine gratoo jalebi shop in winter n mostly recognize the face of the owner 😜
