    I actually just sold my EOS R for the same price I bought it for. I ended up buying a 90D off my buddy for $800. I do a lot of real estate photography and felt the EOS R was a bit much for what I needed. I kept my EOS R and 5D MIV home every time we went on vacation just because I was so concerned about them. If I did bring them and left them at the hotel that's ALL I could think about. The 90D I'll be happy to bring around with me.

    Have you or do you recommend using 90D with canon EF 24-70 2.8 II to shoot music videos? I’m aware it works well with full frame cameras but just curious how this set up might perform. Thanks for wondering input.

    • @EwanLim
      @EwanLim  3 года назад +1

      it would depend on how you're shooting your music video. 24mm x 1.5crop = 36mm equivalent, which is totally fine for most places.
      If you're doing an artsy close-up kind of style for the music video then the 24-70mm is totally fine, especially at the 70mm range (105mm).
      I've used sigma/canon/tamron 24-70mm f2.8 lenses on the 90d and they've worked splendidly. The tamron version with the VC stabilisation is my personal favourite.

    • @EwanLim
      @EwanLim  3 года назад +1

      i was in the same predicament!!! The 6D mkii files (footage and pictures) quality wise are not as good as the more modern cameras like the 90D.
      If you want that full frame goodness, then do look at the Canon RP. It is basically the 6D mkii in a smaller body and it is using the updated RF mount. Depending on where you live, it could be WAY cheaper than a 6D mkii.
      I chose the 90D because of the better quality overall. I can push the 90D files in post further than the 6D mkii files.
      The only difference in that 90d is an APS-C and honestly... aps-c files are way cheaper.

    • @emilydenomme2902

      @@EwanLim Yeah the non full frame part is kind of the thing holding me back right now! • @EwanLim
      @EwanLim  3 года назад +1

      @@emilydenomme2902
      Oh from personal experience, the RP shoots fine.
      If you don't mind using the ef-rf mount adapter then I would advise on getting the RP instead.
      Despite RP using the same sensor as the 6d Mk2, it actually is clearer??? The 6d Mk2 looks slightly mushy to me sometimes.
      I purchased the RP alongside the EOS-R a long while back. (Ditched both cameras in favor of the 90D and M6 mk2) I would have to say that the RP is a camera that is great for photos but only so-so when it comes to video.
      In terms of difference between the RP and 6D mk2, there isn't much honestly. The RP produces better files than the 6D mk2. They use the same sensor but it could be the processing that made it better.
      Do try both, the 6d mk2 and RP, at your local camera shop though since it really boils down to personal preference.

I mostly film in 25p and want to do that externally, so I can synch in obs with direct audio and for unlimited runtime in my studio. Being forced to 30p doesn't sound so good to me, when considering that sony 6600 lets me do it all. Unlimited runtime even internally and clean hdmi out with changeable framerate. If you have the eos r why not use it. It’s superior to the 90D.

    • @EwanLim
      @EwanLim  3 года назад +1

      oh..er... actually the 90d is more useful for me. uncropped 4k, better resolution slow motion and generally on-par HD quality. EOS R is only good for its HD quality. The 4k on the EOS R isn't that great tbh.
      I can't go back to the EOS R after using the 90D. Just imagine, the IPB on the 90D beats out the ALL-I on the EOS R. I use both cameras on shoots sometimes and... I can't agree that the EOS R is superior. Real-life use beats specs any day of the week for me.
      (edit: that is just my personal opinion and I'm pretty sure other EOS R / 90D combo users might feel differently)
      The R5 and R6 on the other hand... MAN!!! The R6 is what the EOS R should've been.

    Thanks for the video Ewan. I'm about to get this camera and the Ninja v. I have heard that the camera screen turns off as soon as you plug in the HDMI cable. I know the Ninja v overcomes the 30 minute time limit, but does the camera screen turn off immediately you hook up the HDMI cable?

    Every time you bring down the contrast or saturation, you are literally taking out the colors, not compressing them. Almost every Canon owners do it believing that it will act like a log picture profile, but, NO, it doesn't work like that. Log picture profile is created using a software where you can adjust how much colors, and shadows/highlights to compress. Use Cinestyle, instead. And don't adjust anything - just get your exposure right.

    • @EwanLim
      @EwanLim  2 года назад

      A typical log profile is literally a reverse S curve which brings down the contrast. (Just fyi)
      Bringing down the contrast and saturation only helps a bit but doesn't fully compare to a reverse S curve of Cinestyle. It doesn't act like it obviously, it just brings you closer to it.
      The reason for this is because you can STILL adjust each black, mid, and highlights value individually in post. Which whacko is just gonna add in the contrast and saturation back in then call it a day?
      For other people reading:
      The benefit of Cinestyle is that it gives you a controlled reverse S-Curve compared to manually lowering your contrast which only brings up the blacks and mids, doesn't do much to the highlights. If you're afraid of exposing your shot correctly then please do use a log profile and as you said, use Cinestyle.
      Don't forget to make sure your highlight/white values are below 90 whilst blacks are above 0 when using any log profile.

    • @kennethearl9878
      @kennethearl9878 2 года назад +1

      @@EwanLim You forgot the colors. You're literally taking away the colors by lowering the sat, not compressing them. That's my point. A log PP is a p2f/p3f file created using a different program. It compresses colors, shadows and highlights. And you said, a typical log profile is just an S curve? nah, mate, there is more to it than an S curve. You can even set how much skin color to compress. S-log skin hue is set to green, and C-log skin hue is set to red.

    • @EwanLim
      @EwanLim  2 года назад

      @@kennethearl9878 i'm just trying to simplify the explaination. I get the point you're trying to make though.
      you're forgeting the codec it is being recorded into. If you're doing a log in 8-bit then it honestly doesn't matter if the colors are saturated or not. If you're recording a 10bit h265 file or hdmi out to record it raw/prores/dnx then of course log would be a better choice.
      The desaturation is more to control it. Because if you get the white balance totally off then there is nothing much you can do to a fully yellow skin (for example). If it is gone then it is gone dude (in respects to 420 8-bit color space compared to going for a 444 10-bit which you can still sorta fix) There is a reason people do it and isn't because of some hype. What I do consider hype is C-Log3. hahahahaha
      S-log and C-log's skin hue is really because of the color algo the camera is recording in compared to the log profile. There is some merit for colors in S-log and C-log compared to just desaturating your factory profiles in camera.
      Log profiles and other color profiles does hold hue information in their data set. If you're fine with the factory's hue and etc info then there is no reason to load another one.
      Although you can install cinestyle into a typical consumer canon camera, not everyone will do that. I had it and I honestly just gave up on it after a while because I'm constantly being handed a camera without installing what I need to install. After going through a whole circus of things, I settled on lowering the contrast and saturation on a natural profile (faithful profile does at pink to skin tones).
      The point of stating lowering the contrast and saturation is bringing the profile to something that can fix your possible mistakes as well as giving you the breadth of mids and shadows to work with.
      As a side note, how do you feel about BMPCC's film (their log profile) compared to C-log 1 & 2?

      The photos I've taken have not been washed out (similar with the 80d).
      I think you need to check the color profile u're using or maybe send it to canon to get it checked though.
      Some lenses like the vintage ones or the tokina (their primes) do give washed out images. The modern Canon lenses wouldn't be washed out as they seem to give a bit more contrast.
      Are the washed out photos due to the lighter blacks and mids? Like faded or matte?
