I have been using this for years when I needed to build gaming tables. The key is to find one with a pattern that doesn't have an obvious repeat or is based on large 12x12" areas.
It's important to not judge speed by a single base especially for scale war gaming where you're easily basing 5-10+ models for an army at a time. For example you don't even have to make the base part flush to the shape of the base. You can easily go a semi scenic look and have it hang off I considered using dollhouse wall and floor paper but never got around to trying it. Would be useful for patterns like marble, tile, checkers, cobblestone, etc and they're already colored.
