Levon Helm...the nicest guy in Rock and Roll. May he RIP. The Band...the most underrated band, all-time. Anyone Bob Dylan chooses, as his back-up band...must be something special. Two thumbs up...👍☀️👍
Imagine a band with both Hudson AND Billy Preston. Wait...we had one: The Band, 1991. For an all too brief time. The video of one of the Preston/Hudson Band shows is on RUclips. It’s pretty awesome!
Agreed. Having been a fan of theirs for some 40 years now, I honestly believe that Weider is every bit as good of a guitarist as Robbie. Not Robbie bashing here, since I’m a fan of his, but simply acknowledging Weider’s talent. Saw them in Chicago in April 96. Sat about 10 yards from Garth, my keyboard hero (I play keys and a bit of guitar). A great night. Even got a “salute” from Levon! If you enjoy Weider here, check out his solo from It Makes No Difference from their performance in Germany, 1996; the concert is posted on RUclips. Blistering. Also, there’s concert video from one of their performances with Billy Preston’s brief time in The Band on RUclips. It’s worth a watch. Preston joined after Stan Szelest passed away in 90. One reviewer called his time in The Band an embarrassment. I kindly disagree. Preston and Hudson in the same band. Wow! Two of the best ever.
Did I see the "drummer" just start out by taking a big swig from a good ole "Pabst Blue Ribbon" PBR...... Yes.... Had to be a great show.. Love this version of CC Rider...
I've heard so many versions of this song over the years, from Leadbelly to Mitch Ryder to Eric Burdon and many others in between..and I don't think I've heard a bad version yet. I suppose that just goes to show what quality musicians can do with a quality bit of music, no matter how old it is.
Well, I've listened again [& again], Hell's Bells it sounds better every time I hear it. I do feel sorry for all those poor little fuckers who grew up listening to all the crap that has passed itself off as music for the recent decades.
The original version was sang by Chuck Willis back in the '50's. he also had a string of big hits, What Am i Living For, Betty and Dupree, CC Rider..ETC...best of the best. I do love The Band but Rick's voice is almost gone.
The Band was so great. This is even better than Chuck Willis' hit version which was one of Willis' best songs. Was that beer or pop that the drummer takes a swig of before the song begins?
I think sometime during or after this tour the Japanese authorities nabbed poor ol' Rick on a BS charge & even made him do a couple of months in Japanese jail, if I'm not mistaken. Kinda messed up & at the very least a serious bummer if'n ya ask me..Oh well, that's the world we live in! Ya can read about it in Levon's book....great read btw, I may have read it 3 times in all.
Just read Levon's book Wheel's On Fire last month. I 've underlined, circled so many parts of this book, and written in margins, always stopping to listen to some of the songs on RUclips. Book's a keeper, for sure.
She sent him a packet of heroin, and it was intercepted. He got busted when he went to pick it up. Big mistake on his/her part. He could have gotten ten years
Wasn't a BS charge, his wife mailed him a packet of heroin, and he was arrested when he tried to pick it up. He did six weeks in jail--the US helped to get him out, or so I understand--that may not be true
A nice attempt to keep the band going. I wonder if they avoided songs Robbie Robertson claimed total authorship on. Levon Helm was bitter about this for the rest of his life.
No, Robbie’s songs were part of their set list until the end. I mean, I love the “reformed” Band...but imagine a Band concert without Robbie’s songs. “Remedy” and filler.
@@robertbruce6865 I haven't looked at this in a while. I'm no expert, but the issue was whether the rest of the band (The Band) shared in the songwriting. Levon Helm said the anger and heartbreak over the claim of sole authorship was what shortened Rick Danko's life. Who knows? One thing I can say for sure, though, is that every time I see Robbie Robertson on some retrospective interview he is arrogant and syrupy, someone I wouldn't cross the street to hear play or sing. We all get a chance at life, play the chance for better or worse, then we are gone. I like to think we get another chance.
@@johnhamilton5290 What shortened Danko’s life was his decades-long addictions to narcotics. Such sad time for the Band. Manuel's gone and although the guitarists try their best, their laid back playing is generic and uninspiring. Listen to Rock of Ages, Robertson kills with every solo he belts out from his Tele.

He found Richard Manuel; helped cut his body down. His son died only a few years later. Don't think he ever got over it. Was sort of the start of the end of him.
@@martykate6836 People deal w grief in different ways, but I’ve always thought that it was odd to say the least that the Coroner in Eli’s case said that he left 3 phone messages for Rick that were never returned.

Robbie passed away today 8/09/2023 age 80 yrs. Losing to many of our greats this year. Gordon Lightfoot, Randy Meisner & others. 😢
Garth Hudson passed away today, 01/21/2025 age 87 years. He was the only surviving member of THE BAND. Now they are all together again RIP ❤.

Thank you Garth for playing for The Band. I love every way you played your organ, piano, and sax. You're the purely genius instrumentalist.
I can't get enough of this!
Just a bunch of " Good ole Boys" having fun with music. RIP Levon
This is excellent love them for years
This version of the band (with Jim Weider and Fred Jr. wailing away on guitars) is a fine one
These guys are flat-out good!! Beautiful music all around.
This is amazing. Such a groove, thank you for posting
Great, only great.......thank you Boys - one of the best versions
I was there! They played in Osaka too. Jorma from Jefferson Airplane & Hot Tuna opened up for them. Good times!

That's Levon Helm.
The loss of their dear pal Richard Manuel is palpable inspite of this spirited performance.

Nice Roy Buchanan style harmonics at the end by Jim Weider.

Fred Carter Jr.! Fred was in the RCO All Stars and also on the Muddy Waters Woodstock Album..
DuneAquaViva Strawberry Wine Songstress Deana Carter is his daughter
