Rest in peace Richard, Rick, beautiful Levon, and Robbie. Long live Garth🙏🏼🎶🎼🎵🎤🎸🥁🎹
The Band in all it's lineup's has always been the best example of professional musicianship and talent - can you tell I love The Band :) I miss 'em all... Richard, Rick and Levon
Had the pleasure of playing in a Toronto band with keyboard man Rick Bell back in 1965-66. Rick passed away too early in his life. I will always have good memories of Rick, his mom & sister. Rick's playing ability always made the music live. John Cairns
Are you anything to Malachy Cairns sax player...estate agent from Misisauga?
❤️🇸🇪
The greatest band of all times!!!
And the inspiration and influence of many others.
Saw them Wembley UK ...support to CSN!!
Hardly. They are amazing but not the best.
@@OutOnTheTiles Well, that's a matter of opinion!!! And in my humble opinion... They were the best of their time!!! I sure hope you are not comparing to the Stones!!!! Iconic, yes but the music and the lyrics belong to The Band Everytime!!! Just opinions, and that is mine!!!!
@@beckyfinch6628 Well I always say The Band was the greatest band and The Rolling Stones are for sure THE GREATEST ROCK & ROLL BAND ever!
@@def717 You need to figure yourself out dude!!! Who is it? The Band or the Stones?!!! It's The Band Everytime for me!!! No comparison!!! Never a big Stones fan!!! They just ok!!!..
Levon is one the best full stack musicians to ever live. Love his vocals so much. So sad I never saw them live. I will listen to The Band for the rest of my live, hopefully another 50 years or so.
If you haven't heard the Starry Night solo show with Rick and Levon search for it because it is pure gold.
Agreed 100%. The band regardless of the eras for them I can listen to forever too

I mostly did this to make it easier for me but hopefully I got the times right for everyone if anyone sees this. Edit: I just noticed this. It looks like levon’s playing his left drumstick upside down on a lot of songs. I’ve never seen him do that before has anyone else? Or is it a double sided one?
Re the instrument that makes the twang in Stand Up - I think it's Garth playing a clavinet setting on his keyboard through some other effect that adds a bit of a jaws harp sound to it. He used the same effect on the recording of Up On Cripple Creek I think.
@@asleepatthereel3114 thanks. I thought it was a different instrument. One u have in ur mouth or something like that but that could be something completely different. Thanks
Holding the stick with the butt end (thicker end) is fairly common. It adds more weight to the stick; he may have done it to achieve a louder sound, or wanted a heavier feel in his hand, or both
@@brendanhodge7713having more weight in the stick makes it bounce better! That's why you want heavier sticks (if you do) - as far as I know.
Yeah Levon has always played with butt end of his left stick when he uses traditional grip
Unlike many other bands, they kept the playing sharp as they got older. No slowing tempo down or doing anything easier way. Great!
Oskarileikos
v
Oskarileikos - Don't kid yourself. I'm certainly glad that these guys continued to play with each other...but they certainly had a huge supporting cast at this stage of their careers. Rather than slowing the tempo, they hired a bunch of other musicians to help fill the sound and carry the load.
@@bigjer881 well, Robbie quit so they needed Jim to play guitar, and Richard died, so they hired Rick Bell for piano and Randy Ciarlante to play drums to replace Richard. And doubling the drummers isn't really making it easier.
Yup completely agree
Only better with age like every thing
I love the Band and Levon was the heart and soul of The Band.
Amen to that❤️
Keep it going!...L.Helm god rest his soul
Levon is working real hard! R.I.P Brother!
Actually all 5 members played together one last time in 1978 when Levon, Richard, Robbie and Garth joined Rick during a Rick Danko Band performance at The Roxy on March 1st. They played three tunes together : Stage Fright, Shape I'm In & The Weight. This was truly the last time all 5 played on stage together
True
Why Robbie left? He wrote most of the songs. We see all three others left here. Richard already R.I.P. at that time.
@TXPHILLYPHAN Hello !! and thanks so much for uploading this show !! I'm sorry to bug and I know its been years but I'll go on a limb and ask anyway if you remember where you got this transfer from by slim chance? If it's a circulated dvd I would love to find it, but this looks like it could be the master or a re-broadcast...
nonetheless thank you again for this upload
RIP Rick, Richard, Levon, you are missed
Great quality, interesting set, love it, thanks!
Wish I could have seen them live. What a great show and a beautiful stage area. One of the greatest bands in music. Thanks for all the music guys.
Wow thank you so much what a great watch !
Qué buenos... y qué grabación tan buena! ¡Gracias por la joya! I ❤The Band!
the best piano solo i ever heard right at the start! what a wicked band even got two drummers doing harmonies...
What a show! Levon, Garth, Rick, Jim, Richard, and Randy. Wish I had been there.
I was the lucky guy...I was there! It was a fantastic show! You see they all at right side of the stage? They really wanna stay together...only great!
Me too
Wow showing you're age bro wish I was there
should have 2 billion hits just to see Annie, Levon and the most beautiful voice in rock and roll history-Ricko.RIP guys and and to an age where music moved people a bit further. Thanks for the upload!
Followed them in late 90’s after hearing Don Imus talk about them. Saw them live in PA -what a show !
Great camera work. Finally we get to see some of Garth playin' live.
Kills me how Garth and Richard never got the camera time they deserved. It's a shame the other guys didn't sort of make it mandatory that they had more equal time. They had to be aware of it. Both of them were integral parts of the band. Not to mention Garth was fun to watch, a it of a character
Thanks brou ! ✌🏽
One of the best bands ever!!

Levon. God bless your rockn soul
This is a nice 90s scoop
thanks wharf - pie
Despite being a fairly serious music fan I didn't recognize the greatness of The Band while most of the members were still alive... I thought about venturing to one of Levon's concerts but never made it...
Garth is 1 multitalented musician too. The Band were just ONE awesome group.
Awsome
I'm still loving Levon Helm. R.I.P...
Damn this is good
🌸❤️
YEAH THE BAND YOU ARE SIMPLY THE BEST BAND
UNAS de las mejores bandas que de los,60...""THE ÚLTIMO VALS"".....✨💫💥🎸..TODA UNA VIDA DE ROCK&ROLL...🎸
Wow, this 90s lineup was great! What a band! Rick, Levon, and Garth, plush Rick Bell and Jim Weider -- both great additions -- and the second drummer stops seeming pointless when Levon gets out front to play another instrument. I like this a lot better than the version they toured with in the 80s with the Cate Brothers.
Danko was always my favorite Band vocalist, but that voice weathered and softened by age is just beyond gorgeous.
🌸❤️🙏
The Beatles went into the studio and created great music.
The Band did it on stage.
stupendous ... PS: anybody may explain why Levon was wearing the glove ?
OUTSIDE IS THE FIRST SNOW SUNNY AND COLD I AND MY CAT ARE IN WARM ROOM I AM JUST SMOKING AND LISTENING TO YOU I LIKE IT
Levon “Slapp’n da Bass Mon” on Crazy Mamma , what a Band ! 💥THE BAND💥
Is that an En Vogue song? I love it :D Love this concert, love and miss Rick and Levon every day. Richard as well.
some of the best garth sounds on a band concert. wish they would have let him shine through on the last waltz. he was always the best
At 32:38 Levon spits the cigarette out of his mouth just a second before he starts singing haha maybe he forgot he had a smoke in his mouth, that or he forgot he was just about to start singing “I pulled into Nazareth” haha when he sang the first line did anyone else hear what sounded like he sang NaTHareth not NaZareth :)
Richard was beside him was playing and watching Levon play and saw the cigarette and was laughing. Levon never missed a beat like a true professional. I wonder who eventually got the burning smoke from under Levon :)
Maybe the camera man who was filming Levon grabbed the cigarette before it burned the outer coating on some wires or something else :)
Thank you for uploading this, I’ve watched it a couple of times or more.
Rest in Peace to all members of the band, The Band playing here and Robbie Robertson who recently passed away.
Te gek !!!
I was lucky enough to film for Levon 4 times in 2009 and 2010. I shook his hand once, felt like lightning.
YES!!! My hand throbbed for blocks, like in a cartoon.
❤️
I saw them as the Hawks backing Dylan on the infamous electric tour
Very Cool!!! Long live the Band!!!
Hats off!❤️
Technical difficulties, still really, really good! Love y’all, Bye!
Robbie left the band in 1976 after the last Waltz, he has a unique voice that is raspy and deep check out his solo stuff. he held the bottom down in the band. great writer penned alot of thier hits
Robbie's voice is and was awful. The only thing being held down was the volume on his mic.
Correction, Robbie took credit for writing all the tunes. He didn't write all those tunes
Crazy mama where you been so long
Love the way at 37:37 where Levon loses his right stick at the end of The Weight, and makes the last hit with the palm of his hand!
I watch this particular concert largely for that moment! Haha. At the beginning of The Weight, Lee also lets his cigarette slip out of his mouth before singing, but it gets stuck on his lip for a second and Randy (second drummer) can be seen laughing his ass off.
I love the band. I’m listening omg . I grew up listening to this, BUT not this YEAY
👍❤️
Actually the original 5 played a few songs together at one of Rick's shows in 78' at the Roxy...:D
Levon is my hero....always has been and I would not dare criticize but I really like the greasy tempo from new Orleans jazz festival version better.
who b dat on de gitar? second piano? garth is a friggin' musical mystic... levon, well, i need to just dance when he hits that box!
++++Crazy Mama
Why so many covers?
Compared to the other voices in The Band, Robbie couldn't sing and in many instances his mic was turned off for good reason.
hate on robertson all you want, but they lost their best guitarist and especially, songwriter...
Sadly Rick sounded like he was struggling also.
the band still sounds amazing without robbie, whats robbie without the band
@@michaeldonovan4793 He wasn't nearly their best guitarist (whoever's in this video is way more solid than Robbie, and the guy who was in Levon's band in the last few years of his life was spectacular), he's just the one who demanded endless overdubs to cover all his mistakes. He's an ok guitarist but let's not confuse his great songwriting with his good-enough guitar playing.
@@milesb72 I'm listening to 'Stage Fright' right now and.... what the hell are you talking about? He doesn't sound super inspired but his voice is solid, especially compared to Robbie who can't even hit the notes to save his life. Robbie's performance on Saturday Night Live in like 1990 was HORRIBLE because of his shitty voice, one of the worst I've ever heard attempting to sing lead on a mainstream release. Great songwriter, ok guitarist, awful singer.
37:40 Stand Up
Free your mind
🌸❤️🙏🇸🇪
This is a damn good performance, and it's sad to see all the comments here by people who apparently don't know The Band as well as they thought they did. Robbie is unnecessary. Rick's voice sounds really good here, but he's singing more delicately than he did when he was a cocaine-fueled beast in the '70s and a lot of people are talking like he sounded bad when he actually sounded a lot better than many, many other performances from their classic era.
Robbie was never unnecessary you fool!!!! He was the brains behind it all!!! You need to do your homework before you take your test!!!!!!! Just stop commenting on what you do not know!!! I KNOW THE BAND!!!
@@beckyfinch6628 Robbie was necessary for song writing not for the actual “sound”. The guitar player that is with them here is way more solid.
@@cb8375 I will stand with the original BAND!!! It's what I lived on and what I love now and always!!! If nothing else... I am dedicated!!! If you watch The Last Waltz and watch Robbie slay it on IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE, I love it,!!!! That's my favorite BAND song... That and Stagefright !!! Danko has both vocals,!!! Love Levon too though!!! His vocals are second to none!!! I just love it all... If you havn't seen the tribute.. " Love for Levon" find it and watch it!!! Not as good as The Last Waltz but it's damn good!!!!

23:54 Rag Mama Rag
27:29 Crazy Mama
Rick Danko seems to be singing so much more softly then he usually would here.
+michelliots I've been wondering the same, maybe problems in the vocal chords or lungs?
michelliots must've been the alcohol and drugs taking their toll
michelliots Been singing the same style of blues, r&ab for near as 45 years as makes no difference. My only response when asked why I don't shout out quite like I used to that I was as young and mean as kid could get - but the wastage I visited upon myself for everyone of those years took a toll - left me weaker in the lung and gut than when your memories date from. Age and the bottle kid - time and the bottle. Ricky was a hellion right until he couldn't be.
Rick's voice was starting to deteriorate the last few years before his death, but he still had his moments
Yeah, funny how not doing cocaine will make people seem like they're not on cocaine.
Strange interpretation of Stage Fright by Danko. We'll let it slide.
Garth still going strong in 1996.
They had all the tools!
is levonplaying a what looks like 8 strings on RAG
It's a mandolin. Looks like a Gibson L-5
Bad camera footage, when Danko is singing, Makes No Difference. Cameras should never venture off of him, especially at the beginning of the song!
I could swear I watched some show in the 80's.. dunno if it was an awards show or what..and they introduced the Band (I assume this was around 83/84) and everyone went nuts.. I didn't know who they were - too young.. but then they made a big deal about Robbie Robertson coming out and joining them for a few songs.. it stuck with me because I wondered why everyone was making such a big deal about these guys. But I could be wrong..like I said I was young.
❤️
Why did they have bad luck with mics before and after Robbie? With Robbie it seems like that mic he always had was wired wrong making it sound like he couldn't sing at all, and sometimes it was just off!....And then after they had some Screeching issues....
Did they invite Robbie to play? Would they? Would he? As much as I live them each individually, its not The Band without him.

Reportedly, Robbie's microphone was not even on during the making of The Last Waltz. Vocals not his strong suit. Levon confirmed this many times.
Where was Richard Manuel?
Who is the guitar player? Where is Robbie?
@@gerardhaubert8210 the guitar player is Jim weider and Richard Manuel has been dead for 10 years at this point
Is Robbie on the stage? If not, why not? And poor Rick looks unwell.
Well, I think guitarist, writer, and vocalist Robertson didn't want to be on stage. Jim Weider, Robertson's replacement, ended up touring with the band for almost fifteen years after they decided to regroup without Robertson, staying close and working with Levon until Levon's passing. You are right about Rick. His, to me at least, sudden weight gain and lack of color signaled something was definitely going on in his life that he lacked control of - and was spilling over into his health. I saw this version of the group and they really brought it for a 90-minute set when I saw them. Such consummate pros who loved playing. They left us all one of rock's richest audio legacies which many new ears discover every year.
59:39 Chest Fever
Anybody got the story on why Robbie wasn't there?
11:14 Remedy
Free Your Mind, from the High on the Hog CD. Damn good interpretation. Love this version even better. Not much in the way of effects, and straight rock and roll.
das spinne (previous poster) ........maybe you should just keep listening to Beiber to appreciate good music , or Miley - that's where the talent is : )
