And... I saw Danko, Fjeld and Anderson a year or so after the Band gig, and when the band left the stage Danko had to pass me. When he passed I asked him to sign his first solo CD (the one you har snippets of in The Last Waltz). He first said "Meet me backstage a little later...", but then he saw what CD I had and said "Oh, you got that one? Wow! Here, hold my guitar"! Soooo.... I got to hold his acoustic guitar while he signed the CD, and I praised him for his work both with The Band and solo!
Rick was very kind to his fans. Met him a few times and he was always appreciative. I saw someone ask him for an autograph once and he laughed saying he was glad to because it beat being a butcher!
There will never be a band again that plays like such a single, breathing organism
Rick is my favorite and I love all of them they have been super bands together for years like Traveling Wilburys and Cream and so on but these guys were the genuine super band I've recorded the last waltz watch at least 2 times a week well just felt like saying something
I saw Danko solo, in ‘87 or so at Christene’s in Dennis, MA. Hate to say, the performance wasn’t great…I brought my Big Pink album with me, asked him if he’d sign it. His eyes grew wide…”Man I haven’t seen THAT in a long time!”. He took a long look at the inside cover, pointing people out to me…”There’s my mom, bless her soul…there’s my dad, bless his soul…”there’s Robbie Robertson’s mom”…he went on and on. He signed it…an unforgettable moment.
Rick was the nicest guy I ever met. We became friends but I think he was friends with everyone! Miss him.
I was 17 when I hitchhiked to Torontos' York Stadium. I'd never heard of the band before that Day but they stole the show and my heart as well.Rick Danko singing it makes no difference still brings tears to my eyes 60 years later

I'm a late convert to The Band but like most of the people commenting here, I'm just blown away at their greatness. I recently watched "The Last Waltz" for the first time and from that moment on I fell in love with the Band. These guys are what rock n roll is all about. I can honestly say there will never be anything close to them. They wear their heart and soul on their sleeves. RIP Levon, Rick and Richard you are all truly missed.

Took me several years to get on board - "Life is a Carnival" and the "Cahoots" LP changed all that - September 1971..

When I was a Senior in high school, I got home one day in 1984 and noticed a brown labeled CD on my dad’s player. It was simply titled The Band. Turned it over to look at the songs, and I noticed that The Night They Drove Ol Dixie Down was on it. Vaguely recalled hearing it as a little boy (and I realized later that it was the Joan Baez version that I remembered), so I put it on. Blown away, I started at the beginning. By the time that King Harvest faded out, I was hooked. I had never heard an entire album where ALL of the songs were at least very good.
Dad gets home from work. I mentioned that I had played that Greatest Hits album that was on his CD player (I assumed that it was due to the excellence of the music, combined with the simple title of the album). He laughed and pointed out that it WASN’T a greatest hits comp, but their second album.
I’ve been in love with their music since.

I bought their fist album in 1970.
Got Big Pink when it came out! Not as many fans back then, so I felt blessed to be part of their in crowd.
I have 2 favorite bands, THE BEATLES and THE BAND, in no particular order... I saw THE BAND a few months after Richard Manuel passed on... He was alive when I bought my concert tickets, and he was gone by the time of the amazing concert.
That show is in the top three concerts I've ever seen... and I've seen over 200 shows!!!
The Band was like nothing else on this earth! I was so close I could have reached out and touched Levon's leg... I stayed right there for the first half of the show, then moved down to where I was right in front of Rick Danko (my favorite... I wish I could have met him... I miss him so.) He came right to the edge of the stage I got to watch his hands play those amazing bass lines.
He played bass unlike anyone else on this earth!
And Garth Hudson is my favorite keyboardist of all time, and what a great horn player! I cannot say enough about how these men impacted and changed my life forever!!!
God bless you; RIP Richard, Rick, and Levon! There are less colors in the world without you!

Only two bands changed my life. The Band and The Velvet Underground. That is the only thing they have in common but that's a BIG one!

Saw them about a month or so after this gig, and they were amazing!!! I was even lucky enough to be invited to dinner with them after the show, but that's another story....;-) All I can say, they were a great bunch who knew how to treat their fans!!! RESPECT!!!!! RIP Manuel, Danko, Bell and Helm! Your legacy and music will live on forever, and people will remember you with love in their hearts!! You were such a great band no matter what incarnation!

Lived 1/4 mile from the danko family farm. My mom, Carmen, was dating Rick the months before he left for California to become famous and she hooked up with my dad before he could come back. Yup I have imagined lol. The entire danko family was talented and sat a many family jams at the old farmhouse, was blessed.
How about Levon playing the mandolin, high-hat, kick drum and singing a great version Rag Mamma Rag - all at the same fucking time - unreal!!!

When I first saw him in Helena, Arkansas, his band opened with Caledonia. He didn’t have another drummer though. He carried it all on his own. I’d seen him with The Band years earlier. But I got to sit and visit with him for a while this time. He was a great guy, very REAL. He was still a country boy from Turkey Scratch, Arkansas. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great musicians all had something unique to offer to the Band First saw them at Watkins Glen in NY in 1973 with the Dead and Allman Bros Those were the days 🎇
I am just amazed and stunned when I watch this....then at the same time broken hearted and sad that they are no more. I wonder if they now know how incredible and adored they are then and even now. Miss them all so much.

I did not know that Levon played the bass guitar so well. He can really groove. I've never seen one of these concerts from the 90's, even though I had all of the music from the reformed BAND. It's great to see how well Rick performed live. Too soon gone, man.
Actually, Levon taught Rick Danko to play the bass in 1961
BTW, Rick started out as a lead guitarist, then Levon taught him to play bass and he took over that job
I've always had the feeling Levon could play anything, and teach it, too. That man was a walking, talking, singing, brilliant musical genius.
Levon Helm could probably play almost any instrument you put in front of him
Garth taught them all also.

Had a band with Rick Bell in 1963...practiced in his parents basement on Yonge Blvd in Toronto...always good music. Rest in peace Rick.

It was at the UNO Lakefront Arena. The band really wasn’t great that night, but they killed it at the fairgrounds I think was the day before. I saw both performances. My first jazz fest!

Ricks voice ;to me,is so beautiful ,calming, and smooth. By far my favorite Levon's is awesome as well.Can't go 1 day w/o watching this show.What a blessing to have this.
I was there. Buckwheat Zydeco opened the show and did a cover of the Stones Beast of Burden. After that everything got hazy. Glad to see this, thanks Txphillyphan.
I’m soon to be 20 and wish I would’ve been able to see these guys perform in concert as I love their sound that they make. It always makes my day to hear any of their songs wether it’s from the original days, days with the cate bros, or the 90’s I still love hearing them. Thank u for uploading this

Jim Weider is killin here. Tone, taste and chops. Obviously has some influence from Robbie. A bit more refined than Robbie's slash and burn take no prisoners playing, but still has the feel for the material.
Way more class and alot less ego than RR too :)

\WOW! They had it all JUST RIGHT here. I never thought I'd view a better live performance and recording by The Band than The Last Waltz, but this tops it in my opinion. Levon, Rick, Garth and these others gave amazing performances here, and the sound production is THES BEST one can ask for. Hats off to all who were involved in the PHENOMENAL DELIVERY of music at its FINEST!!!!
RR had his last waltz with these friends but this kicks it up another level the last waltz was a biography this is Saturday night pink as Levon once said . a great band will always replace itself they done it solid here

Levon - wonderful drummer and singer, and he was one of those musicians that pick up other instruments (blues harp; electric bass, guitar, and mando and make it sound like it was his main axe!

Back in the day, I saw this lineup front row in the old Ontario Place revolving stage in Toronto. Terrific show! Also, I'm wondering who has seen the earlier VHS of them touring Western Canada after Robertson had left. They had added extra talent such as the Cates brothers, I believe. Man, they were red hot and tighter than a witches wtf. Track it down and enjoy. Would love to find a digitized and remastered version. The performances are worthy of such treatment.

Crazy Mama - Levon on bass!! That tickles me too. And not surprisingly he's right in the pocket, driving the tune! Good drummers know what goes into a bass line. Levon rocked no matter what he played. The memory of all you gave us rocks on too.
Wooo! Rick is tearin up that bass playin Remedy! Funky! Sure doesn't look like that's what he's playin or moving to either but he's always been like that. Very unique. Wish I could have met him or seen him play.
Good friend of Rick's here...spent a lot of time on their bus and going show to show with the best seats! Rick was a total gentleman, witty and so very kind. One night during a solo tour after my husband past away he dedicated Long Black Veil to me. I remember CSN opening for The Band several times! Some great times with a wonderful friend ❤️!!

The Band , the best Band in the World
I’m 26, so I wasn’t born until 8 months & 7 days after this concert, but The Band, and more specifically, Levon, has had such an impact on my life. My brother played their version of ‘Atlantic City’ for me when I was 10, and that was it. I went down the rabbit hole of The Band & music inspired by/similar to the Band. Top 5 are The Band, Grateful Dead, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison & Talking Heads.

I was at this show. Buckwheat Zydeco was also there. They were professionally recording this show. I've waited 22 years for this show to surface. I always wondered what happened to the tapes.

I bought Music From Big Pink my junior year in high school, 1968. The Band became part of my soul.
From his home in Woodstock, New York, the amiable Canadian also expressed his desire to make an album with Keith Richards, explained why he took a long hiatus from recording, and offered some less-than-flattering observations on old Bandmate Robbie Robertson.
MATTHEW LEWIS: Rick, on the new album, I really like your version of Twilight. Why did you pick that particular old Robbie Robertson song to record?
RICK DANKO: I hate to say this, but it's as much of a Rick Danko song as it is a Robbie Robertson song. I just forgot to seek (credit). Robbie was very tight with sharing those responsibilities. That's why he's where he is, and that's why we are where we are, to make a long story short... He'll say he did it all, if you give him the opportunity,
MATTHEW: Are there a lot of old Band songs that you feel you should have been credited on?
RICK: I feel that way about the whole band. Especially the music. A lot of them stories, Levon (Helm, Band singer and drummer) told a lot of great stories that we worked in the lyrics for songs. But that's behind us. I feel much the way Mike Love (of the Beach Boys) feels. (Love sued bandmate Brian Wilson for denying him songwriting credits.) Maybe I'll have to end up hiring his lawyer (laughs).
MATTHEW: What's your relationship with Robbie these days?
RICK: I don't really speak to him or see him that much. He's hanging out in that Armani crowd, I guess, wearing them Armani suits.

LW blows this out of the water. Its like champagne versus Miller High Life. Def don’t need two drummers when you literally have arguably the greatest rock drummer of all time.
wow don't know about you guys but i can really see how much richard was missed. he sort of centered the band on that big-ass grand of his. this blues stuff is alright. i guess ya gotta live on and pay the bills. life goes on
Richard was my favorite, also a tortured soul. My favorite white singer ever . Garth a master way above anyone's league. But still The Band, the whole much better than the sum of its parts. Gonna go play in a station now!
It's a different band without Richard for sure. They adjusted and kept on doing what they did best. "IMND" is the one tune that really sounds like the old Band.
There was a 500 capacity venue in Chattanooga around this time - Market Street Performance Hall. This version of The Band played there 3 times over 3 years. First night they opened with REMEDY and launched into what became the coolest most incredible night of music I have ever experienced. Their contract had them playing for only 75 minutes including encores-3 phenomenal hours later...! LOLOL They were so fucking cool! Great memories! God bless 'em
One more thing....Garth is BADASS in that hat!
