Some trivia: - The songs are ordered alphabetically because the band weren't sure how to order them. It worked out great. - If you reverse the ending of Daydreaming and pitch it up an octave, you'll hear Thom saying what sounds like "half of my life" or "half of my love". This refers to both his tenure with Radiohead as well as his relationship with Rachel Owen, who he met in 1993. The two separated amicably in 2015; Owen later passed away due to cancer in 2016. - True Love Waits was worked on for years going back to the OK Computer sessions; an electronic version served as the basis for Pulk / Pull Revolving Doors on Amnesiac. The studio version is very much by Thom and Rachel's separation. - The album cover (done by the same artist as all the band's work) got its distinctive look by being left outside for a couple days.
I mean technically it isnt ordered alphabetically because you got “The numbers” and then “Present Tense” but if you count The numbers as just Numbers then it is ordered alphabetically
Jonny greenwood (guitarist, genius, multi instrumentalist ) composes and conducts film scores and the London contemporary orchestra - he writes and arranges all the orchestration
This is my personal favorite Radiohead album and one of my favorite albums of all time. I haven’t found something that replicates this album. I still remember hearing ful stop for the first time. Never has a song like fully replicated the feeling of anxiety for me and it was almost euphoric. The orchestration on every song is phenomenal and the stripped back piano on glass eyes, day dreaming, and true love waits is so unique. Thanks for reacting. I hope others agree with my sentiment
Man I totally understand. A Moon Shaped Pool is my favorite album of all time not because I think every song is perfect but because in the state it puts me in. The orchestra and the background vocals in some songs like decks dark and present tense just make me go in another dimension. And thats where I value music the most
A Moon Shaped Pool is an orchestral masterpiece. This is the most Cinematic Radiohead album, followed by Kid A. The ending was heartbreaking, True Love Waits always had me in tears. Also, this might be Radiohead last album 😢 Radiohead went hiatus and the members had side projects. And recently, Colin Greenwood (the bassist) will release a book full of photos of Radiohead journey captured by him and its titled "How To Disappear" 😓
It doesn't develop sufficiently from past albums to gain that lofty title. It's beautiful, but there are few surprises/shifts in musical direction, unlike when one first listens to OK Computer or Kid A. Musically, I don't think it's as strong as In Rainbows either, but that's just personal opinion.
@@JamieMcDonald-n6d it’s the most emotionally impactful for me and found me at a very rough time in my life. I do understood where you are coming from though. It definitely is not as innovative as things like Kid A. To me it’s the most vulnerable and beautiful music Radiohead has produced
I remember when this album first came out. It was a cold rainy day after school, I put my headphones and laid down on my bed and fully immersed in the album. One of the greatest listening experiences I've ever had. 10/10 album!
Daydreaming is literally the flashbacks from gladiator. Fun fact about decks dark - it played over the ending of the 1st episode of ozark. Perfectly used if you know the scene
4:43 "If you float you burn" is a reference to a famous scene from the Monty Python and the Holy Grail, where they tested alleged witch by comparing her weight with the weight of a duck which floats. It's worth to see (and react to) that iconic movie. 8:02 the song and the music video has many references to the Radiohead discography and history. It's a nod to Radiohead fans. If you read the lyrics it's becomes clear that this is a song dedicated to Radiohead fans. 12:47 one of the themes that is used in this album is Thom's breakup with his gilrfriend. He uses the references to Douglas Adams book "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" in this song to describe the state when your whole world gets destroyed and you can do nothing about that. It's not the first time when he references this book, a lot of references can be found in OK Computer. 20:26 one of the themes used in this album is a climate change. "Truth will mess you up" is about people who can't comprehend how bad is our environmental footprint. 30:13 Probably the most straightforward and less cryptic Radiohead song, talking about how the numbers (money, big corporations, politicians) destroy our world and that we have to do something about it. 37:11 you're not far from the truth. Jonny Greenwood, Radiohead guitarist, who did the most job in arranging this album, also composed soundtracks to numerous movies, notably There Will Be Blood
"If you float you burn" isn't a reference to Monty Python and the Holy Grail. In ancient times, even before medieval eras, some people were determined to be witches based on whether they would float if they were thrown into a river after being accused of witchcraft. If they were to float or swim, they were considered witches and killed. If they were to sink, they just died. So it was a weird lose/lose situation. Dumb, I know.
@wazzygd -yeah, don't skip TKOL. There's still some damn fine songs on there. Really, the only weak point was "Feral", other than that I would still give that album at least a 7.5-8 rating.
This was my first Radiohead album, it came out about a year after I'd first started listening to a few of their singles. I'd bet that it was this album that got me where I am today, in terms of how I listen to music and just how much music I listen to. Glad you guys enjoyed it
You mentioned Thom Yorke's other band The Smile, and personally I think their second album "Wall of Eyes" is worth reacting to on the channel. It reminds me a lot of Moon Shaped Pool, but still manages to have its own identity. Definitely worth a listen imo :)
The 2 "The Smile" albums next! :-) Btw, theres a game called" KID A MNESIA EXHIBITION". [ Kid A Mnesia Exhibition is an exploration game based on the music and artwork of the Radiohead albums Kid A (2000) and Amnesiac (2001). Players move through an abstract virtual museum, examining artwork and listening to music and sounds from the albums. ]. And its free.
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet. But since both of you kept saying how this sounded like a soundtrack from a movie, they actually stopped production on this album to create a theme for one of the James Bond movies called spectre that unfortunately didn't get chosen. It is, in my opinion, one of the best Radiohead songs ever and my favourite song of all time.
I always think that daydreaming is like Thom Yorke telling a story to his wife whos had a cancer in a hospital room. "This goes beyond me Beyond you" "Then it's too late The damage is done" "A white room by a window Where the sun comes through" "We are just happy to serve You"
I've binged your Radiohead journey in about a day and here I am, really enjoyed it! I got into them based on their first 3 albums when Kid A was new and it took me ~6 months to wrap my head around Kid A back in 2000 but then I loved it. Every album of theirs took me at least a couple months to get into except from the first listen everything on AMSP felt like it had always belonged, I immediately could not imagine Radiohead without this album. They're so amazing live I hope you get to some of their live stuff even if not on YT, From The Basement is always top tier, they also had a live EP in 2001. They even have a few albums' worth of quality B-sides sprinkled across a quarter century of EPs and singles.
If you guys haven’t you should watch Thom and Jonny perform The Numbers and Present Tense acoustic directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. To me those are the ultimate versions of those two songs.
Highly recommend some of Thom Yorke’s solo albums like ANIMA and The Eraser. Excellent as well! This is one of my top 3 Radiohead albums next to In Rainbows and Kid A
You should react to Radiohead "In Rainbows From the Basement (April 2008)". As great as the "In Rainbow" album is, the "from the basement" session is amazing! And you get to watch the band play the songs, which shows how great they are as musicians because their live performance is better than the actual album.
Thanks for this, I enjoy your reactions. You haven't reacted to The Smile. Brilliant side band from Jonny and Thom. Saw them live back in March, amazing!
At the end of the first episode of the show “Ozark,” the first time the family gets out of their car and sees the Lake of the Ozarks, “Decks Dark: is playing, and it’s just perfect. And in fact, Johnny said (on the Smartless podcast) when he watched the show, it was the first time he really liked the mix, that he was satisfied with the song.f
I have adored this album since it came out. I love all their albums to some degree, but this one (and the 2nd half of TKOL at that time in my life) really struck a chord with me. They just never really disappoint. I'm glad you guys really enjoyed it as much as you did. Especially for a first listen. Definitely go back and do TKOL and maybe the "from the basement" stuff after that. I think you will still be impressed.
So glad you listened to this album, it is by far one of their best. I am curious to see what you would thing about The King of Limbs, it's very unique.
Guys thank you for this amazing Radiohead journey. Im a big fan of radiohead and recently got my first tattoo of them. Your reaction of Ok Computer made me a fan of your channel and I’ve seen almost everz video ever since. BUT before you end this chapter of RH reactions I would recomend ( if you dont go back to the two albums you didnt cover) to try Man of War and Lift. They released it in 2017 as part of a re released Ok Computer album. They are really good songs with the same vibes as songs from OKC. Man of war being one of my favorites from them. They also released music videos for the songs. So thats just my recommendation. Other than that, thank you once again for this journey and I’ll be waiting for the next video.
So awesome. I like Creep too and all their more genre bending songs. I think a lot of their songwriting was due to pressure from record labels to write hits. As they went on they got better, got more experience, went away from the labels, they showed more of their influences and experimental ideas.
i loved these videos on radiohead. i love people loving what I love and recognising the masterpieces they are. there shouldn't be a final reaction for readiohead they are too good to not be listened to
A recommendation that I'm going to make for the Radiohead fans here - if you're not familiar with Submotion Orchestra check out Kites from 2018. They're a jazz band from Leeds UK with some underlying dubstep structure and a really good lounge singer (her high notes sometimes almost sound like clarinet squelch which is wild). Listening to this album got me thinking about that one a bit since they're both very much 'music for adults'.
I always felt like the outro to Decks Dark had Pink Floyd vibes to it. I can’t think of a specific song, but it just sounds like a Pink Floyd jam sesh to me
I'm a firm believer we will get #10 album. It is cinematic - I highly recommend you watch "in Rainbows: From the Basement" - your Radiohead experience is far from over until you do, arguably it is the apex moments in band history. You will get a zillion watchers for that EVENT!!!! Been fun journey, thanks!
You guys should also listen to The Smile, it’s a side project with Thom Yorke, Johnny Greenwood, and Tom Skinner (not in Radiohead). Very much sounds like Radiohead, you guys would like the 2 albums they have out. New one coming in about a week, should be just as good!
Some albums to listen to: Ants From Up There - BCNR Lift Your Skinny Fists - Godspeed You! Black Emperor Deathconsciousness - Have a Nice Life Like Clockwork - QOTSA In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson How To Leave Town - Car seat Headrest Station to Station/ Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie I'd also love to see a reaction to the song Dance with the Devil by Immortal Technique. One of the craziest songs ever made.
Amazing reaction, guys. You have to do King of Limbs though, because it's their most underated. I think it is mostly understated and stylish, but several tracks are beautifully impactful. I enjoy the junction of experimental, and classic Radiohead. Do your ears, and your brains a huge favor-react to TKOL. It is brilliant in its own, unique way.
That’s why Thom ended making two movie albums now, both out of this world good, Suspiria and Confidenza. Johnny in the other hand had done it for a while, he is a masterful craftsman at this point. Guys there are two songs of Thom and Johnny playing on the countryside, I think the “the numbers” and can’t remember the other but amazing versions; awesome react 🙌🏻❤️
Great reaction! Please check out both the live of present tense and the numbers (Jonny Tom and a cr78) they are shot by Paul Thomas Anderson super simple videos but they are a vibe and thom sound amazing on them , you won’t regret it
Radiohead is actually still a band... They only tour when they realease new albums and believe me when i say, they are going to release LP10 some day in the future... Pleas do IN RAINBOWS FROM THE BASEMENT, that is Copyright free.
Boards of Canada is another group from around that time that we need another album from asap.. their synths and samples are crazy nostalgic but their beats/music sounds like something from a future we should've already arrived at
Guys, if you looking for band that trying to change and experiment with music so much as Radiohead does - you should start listening Mutemath💫 You can have another great experience with these guys🙏🏻
Something else worth a listen to is the paused recording this album to do their version of Spectre that was rejected for sam smiths. Orchestration on that one is fantastic.
You guys should do the live version of King of Limbs, From the Basement. The series also has a full live version of In Rainbows, both are arguably better than the studio versions of the albums.
to my guy deck right (my screen left - blue shorts), i think maybe the word you're looking for regarding some of the music is "warm." i get a comforting feeling from the music despite the underlying subject matter not being "happy." there is also a warmth in Thom's vocals even though there is sadness underneath. the cure does something similar in some songs, playing what sounds like happy, joyful music while the underlying message/lyrics are melancholic.
You guys should listen to OKNOTOK. It’s the 20th anniversary album of Ok Computer. It came out just a year after this. It has some amazing songs like lift, man of war, and polyethylene. Also check out the king of limbs if you ever get the chance
Hopefully they make another album. If not, this was a fantastic ending.
The Smile is also fantastic, you should react to those albums at some point.

You guys should also listen to The Smile, it’s a side project with Thom Yorke, Johnny Greenwood, and Tom Skinner (not in Radiohead). Very much sounds like Radiohead, you guys would like the 2 albums they have out. New one coming in about a week, should be just as good!
You guys are great, and Radiohead are the greatest band!!!
End of
You might as well go back and complete the discography at this point... Weve made it this far on this journey and i need full closure!
Some albums to listen to:
Ants From Up There - BCNR
Lift Your Skinny Fists - Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Deathconsciousness - Have a Nice Life
Like Clockwork - QOTSA
In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
How To Leave Town - Car seat Headrest
Station to Station/ Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie
I'd also love to see a reaction to the song Dance with the Devil by Immortal Technique.
You've got to do both the Smile albums. They're fantastic.
Ooh god , soooou amazing , love this 😂❤
You should react to The Smile. It's like an "extension" of Radiohead.
Cool reaction guys, you have to check out The Smile which is the main focus for Thom and Jonny now.
Boards of Canada is another group from around that time that we need another album from asap.. their synths and samples are crazy nostalgic but their beats/music sounds like something from a future we should've already arrived at
Guys, if you looking for band that trying to change and experiment with music so much as Radiohead does - you should start listening Mutemath💫
You can have another great experience with these guys🙏🏻
guys, you need to listen to Low Roar's album "0', this band has an incredible vibe, very similar to radiohead!
up
you can combine the main B sides into one video (OKNOTOK, In Rainbows Disk 2, etc)
During Present tense : Guy at the right is just digging to the music, guy at left is taking in the gravity of the sadness and the lyric.
Remember me as the guy who admitted he had committed musical sins
It’s like they a channeling Kate bush, Nick Drake and Glen Cambell on this album…it’s still Radiohead. We are blessed to have them.
Something else worth a listen to is the paused recording this album to do their version of Spectre that was rejected for sam smiths. Orchestration on that one is fantastic.
Check out the acoustic version of "True Love Waits" It'll rip your hear out.
You guys should do the live version of King of Limbs, From the Basement. The series also has a full live version of In Rainbows, both are arguably better than the studio versions of the albums.
They’re all different but I can tell it’s Radiohead
As a hardcore radiohead fan, I'd love to see you guys do the 2 the smile albums.
to my guy deck right (my screen left - blue shorts), i think maybe the word you're looking for regarding some of the music is "warm." i get a comforting feeling from the music despite the underlying subject matter not being "happy." there is also a warmth in Thom's vocals even though there is sadness underneath. the cure does something similar in some songs, playing what sounds like happy, joyful music while the underlying message/lyrics are melancholic.
You guys should listen to OKNOTOK. It’s the 20th anniversary album of Ok Computer. It came out just a year after this. It has some amazing songs like lift, man of war, and polyethylene. Also check out the king of limbs if you ever get the chance
You guys should really check out the rejected James Bond theme they did for Spectre if you like this orchestration.
Check out The Smile - Has Thom yorke and Jonny greenwood as members.
Few great albums
You guys should react to the TKOL Live From The Basement. It will blow your shit.
Absolutely, after in rainbows.
That live performance is the way to listen to that album for sure. Epic.
